I wouldn't bother with dd-wrt micro.. just keep using it for a few days, go buy a real router that can run dd-wrt (wrt54gl, for instance, from newegg -- super easy and safe to flash!), and then go return the POS router to walmart.

vnc. what's not to like? ssh for CLI stuff or X forwarding I dont even know of a better way under windows than vnc. MS Desktop Sharing is a joke. Linux has several really good vnc clients too.

if that fixed it, great.. otherwise it sounds like a sound daemon (artsd or the like) problem.

with my (onboard) digital audio, via coax spidf, I have to unmute the IEC958 chip and turn up the volume on master, pcm and the '958 slider. run 'amixer scontrols' and paste whatcha get.

It does actually.. but I've found it doesnt work always. Especially with nvidia cards. *grumble* At least on my ubuntu system it tried reading it and failed, had to setup all the stuff manually. Oh well.

well, you can use vmware or another emulator to run windows from inside linux, but it does not have the graphics capabilities or the speed needed to run games. great for other applications that need a full blown windows build, however.

Go install vsftpd. Super easy to config and run. But.. yeah, it is one more thing to config, but ftp is very nice when dealing with clients in windows who won't or can't understand scp/sftp.

Well, my load average is 6.0 right now. 2 bzip2 processes, tar, couple of ftp and samba sessions going, along with amarok playing music, surfing [H]. It's not too lagged down, but its getting a bit slow. So, quad would be the best option I think if I can pull it off for cheap. So.. yeah...
