Sound Not fully functional - ubuntu

My roommate has a sound blaster card in a pci slot on his computer running a new Ubuntu install. Sound works in flash videos and stuff through the internet browser, but it DOES NOT work through the standard media player or Amarok.

Any ideas on how we can troubleshoot this? Checking out ubuntu documentation and didn't have any real luck.

He has a "creative sound blaster X-Fi Xtream Audio" card. I have a pci sound card as well but did not have to mess with anything, sound works for everything.

if that fixed it, great.. otherwise it sounds like a sound daemon (artsd or the like) problem.
