sharp 32" 4k monitor - who else is planning on getting it?

Same with my Sharp. The new drivers didn't do the trick. By the way, BIOS messages don't show up when the monitor is in MST mode. Pretty annoying because fixing this would require new video card firmware... I don't really have any issues with 30Hz in SST mode, though... Does 60Hz really...

A new NEC professional IPS? PA series

If you calibrate the sRGB mode via the internal calibration functionality, can you go back to the factory calibration, or are you stuck with the new calibration? With the LCD3090WQXi, you can't go back to the original calibration once you calibrate using the internal calibration. I found this...

NEC PA301W Release Date and Price Announced

The problem is typically with sub-pixels. Entire dead pixels are encountered much less frequently. Even one dead sub-pixel can be quite annoying. For example, you can get a pretty obvious red dot in the middle of white backgrounds. A bigger problem, actually, is uniformity across the screen -...

NEC PA301W Release Date and Price Announced

Should be the same - it's the same 30" LG panel. Unfortunately, the state of the technology is such that it's not perfect. The thing that bothers me is the pretty large variation between units. This is a general problem - not specific to NEC. I would be willing to pay more for a unit with no...

NEC PA301W Release Date and Price Announced

That's a different problem, then. I haven't seen that (and hopefully never will...) Do these lines flicker, or do they stay static? You should probably contact NEC customer support... Their US team is reputed to be good, and I personally had good experience with them in the past.

NEC PA301W Release Date and Price Announced

Are you referring to faint vertical gray stripes visible on white backgrounds? Mine have had those since the beginning, and they stayed pretty much the same since then (not getting any better or worse). Many people reported the problem back in 2008. I believe it's a flaw in the LG panel itself...

NEC PA301W Release Date and Price Announced

The problem that bothers me the most with the NEC LCD3090WQXi is a flaw in the design of the stand. The panel is very heavy, and as time progresses, the part of the stand that holds the panel at a particular tilt position weakens. This means that the panel starts having a tendency to tilt...

A new NEC professional IPS? PA series

It's not yet mentioned even on the Japanese site of NEC, so it will probably still take a while. Too bad there's no new 30" IPS panel, so it will still have the same old LG panel from 3 years ago (also used by the LCD3090WQXi)...

    Dell U3011 coming soon.

I believe the lamps come as part of the LCD module from LG. Tint and color uniformity issues are typically LCD problems, not lamp problems. The buzz is most likely a problem with some power-related component such as the CCFL inverter or the power supply.

    Dell U3011 coming soon.

You're likely to get better whites and a better color calibration overall with the NEC.

    Dell U3011 coming soon.

The NEC LCD3090WQXi at $2200 or the (hopefully) soon-to-be-released PA301W are better choices if you care about calibration and accuracy. It's still a crapshoot to some extent, but with better chances of landing a good unit.

    Dell U3011 coming soon.

Higher-end 30" monitors from NEC and Eizo have settings for enhanced color and brightness uniformity across the panel. They have some electronics which perform compensation. This is one of the biggest advantages of those models. Non-uniformity can be very annoying, and it's a big problem with...

A new NEC professional IPS? PA series

You may be able to exchange it. The replacement unit may be better or worse - it's a crapshoot - but it's worth a try if your current one is unacceptable. My experience with large LCD monitors is that around one in six units is really good, and the others have issues which are annoying to...

    Dell U3011 coming soon.

Makes sense - I guess that would explain why they didn't change the model number of the panel, and it's still called LM300WQ5. Not much point then in this whole refresh of the 30" monitors...

    Dell U3011 coming soon.

No, LG doesn't make an LED version of this panel, only CCFL. The only new thing about the new flavor of the LM300WQ5 panel is that it supports 10-bit color. I guess the technology has pretty much matured at this point, so no new exciting changes. The good thing about this is that for most...

A new NEC professional IPS? PA series

Huh? What they're saying in the slides is that the PVA panels used by Eizo were categorized as "class B" in terms of viewing angles, while the IPS panels used by NEC were categorized as "class A". This is just a PVA vs. IPS issue. It seems like you misunderstood this...

A new NEC professional IPS? PA series

Sounds impressive. A good sRGB mode is very important. I wonder how the NEC PA301W will compare to the recently-announced Eizo CG303W which is expected to ship in Japan in mid-March. It looks like the predictions of the death of 30" monitors were very much exaggerated...

A new NEC professional IPS? PA series

Thanks for the info! Too bad we have to wait until the fall... Will the PA301W support calibration of the sRGB mode with SpectraView? This would be a nice enhancement - the LCD3090WQXi doesn't support this. Also, will the PA301W use the same LG panel as the LCD3090WQXi (LM300WQ5)?

No more new 30inch computer screen?

DisplayPort 1.2 supports 3840x2400. That would be a great next step in resolution. The panel size can still be increased a little beyond 30" for a computer monitor. The main problem is that pixels will be smaller than on current 2560x1600 30" monitors, but scaling can be used to address that for...

No more new 30inch computer screen?

I use two 30" monitors. Al Gore uses three 30" monitors... I find that more screen real estate makes work easier, more efficient, and more pleasant. I use IPS panels (NEC which run hot) in the winter, and PVA panels (Eizo) with internal fans in the summer. 30" 2560x1600 is also awesome for...

No more new 30inch computer screen?

Not much new on the 30" front in recent times, but I would agree with metalsmart that there hasn't been any new technology or market requirement that would justify new models beyond the multiple good offerings which are already available. 2560x1600 at 120Hz for 3D would be a nice new feature...

A new NEC professional IPS? PA series

It looks like these monitors are an improvement over the 90 series, but I wish there was something new going on in terms of the LCD panel itself. For example, it seems that the PA301W uses the same LG LM300WQ5 panel which is used in the LCD3090WQXi. The LM300WQ5 has been around for two and a...

    LCD3090WQXi

I got the colorimeter and software from NEC. Bear in mind, though, that you can only calibrate the native wide-gamut mode with their software on this monitor. I have the Eizo CG301W as well, and it performs better in some ways and worse in others. It has a better sRGB mode which can be...

    LCD3090WQXi

It's a very good monitor - I certainly recommend it. The main things that I don't like about it are the large amount of heat it generates, and the incorrect reds in sRGB mode. Some people are bothered by the low contrast (blacks aren't great), some backlight bleeding at the top, and the glow at...

    NEC 3090wqxi dead pixels

Where is this information about a new 30" panel from LG coming from? I haven't seen anything about that. It's true that their current panel has been around for two years already, but Samsung's current 30" panel has been around for three years... I think that the IPS and PVA technologies...

Samsung 243T - Time to Replace?

The 243T has a panel with very nice image quality. Text is not quite as sharp on the newer Samsung PVA panels. Also, the 243T panel had...

30" panel speculation (possible new revisions) coming soon?

LG is still showing LM300WQ5 as their latest 30" panel. I'd expect to see something from them about a new panel before you see it in monitors from Dell, HP, etc., so I wouldn't hold my breath. The vast majority of their effort goes into LCDs for TVs rather than computer monitors, unfortunately...

    Samsung new PVA screens

CCFLs have a limited brightness range. There's a problem with attenuating high-brightness CCFLs to achieve low brightness. The heat/power problem is indeed not as bad with smaller and lower-resolution panels. At 30", it's very obvious. I noticed the difference on 20" and 24" panels as well...

    Samsung new PVA screens

I don't have a device for measuring power draw, so I can't run the tests even though I have the monitors. In terms of heat (which should correlate with power), there's no doubt - my 30" IPS monitors run much hotter than my 30" PVA monitors (LCD3090WQXi and 3008WFP vs. CG301W and 305T)...

    Samsung new PVA screens

I didn't say anything about "minimal difference". I said that monitor power consumption is not the same as backlight power consumption. You are listing the power consumption for the entire monitor. I was talking about the power consumption and heat related to the backlight itself, which is higher for IPS than PVA due to the need to run the CCFL much brighter in IPS panels. The monitor power consumption is misleading. For...
