This happened to me and after alot of googling found it has happened to quite alot of people.
I used Recuva to get them back, had to do a clean install of Vista after I recovered my files though.
Turned out to be an updated driver for my onboard LAN that Windows Update gave me. I rolled back to the driver that Vista installed when I installed Vista and it works fine.

Bit of a strange one this. First time I put Vista (Ultimate) on I used the upgrade option from XP, everything worked fine including my downloads.
My HDD failed so I replaced it and clean installed Vista. Now my downloads are very slow and hang all the time. I get around 40k for about 10...
Just built an FX57 7800GTX Gamer Edition SLI rig with an Asus A8N-SLi Premium nForce4 SLi mb for my mate and it is one of the easiest and stable overclockers I have used :D
Pity I have to give it my mate tomorrow :(
Not all cards display what it is at boot, depends if it is in the cards BIOS. Not sure why it is hanging booting up though. What power supply do you have?
I am running in 1600x1200 Ultra settings and get an average of 35fps.

GeForce FX5950Ultra Stock Speeds and Forceware 61.77s
Next week my 6800Ultra will arrive, cannot wait to see what FPS I get then :D
