How many of you guys out there are able to play in Ultra Mode?

I went into my motherboard BIOS and set AGP Aperture size to 512MB, clocked my 9800Pro 128MB to 400/355 and also did a few tweaks on the game and am able to play in Ultra mode at 800x600 with very few noticeable lags. I'm a little confused cause I thought this was only possible on the highest end hardware.

you are still running it at 800x600 though. Thats not very impressive, heh.
You're right but hey I still am running at Ultra mode.

I was doing ultra mode on 1280x1024 it was very playable

same

i also did all the image quality tweaks i found also to make it more detailed

i've been playing on 1280x1024 on Ultra mode since i got my BFG 6800 GT OC without problems. Still running between 40-60 fps most times. woot
Only wish my monitor would do 1600x1200.

i noticed no difference in visual quality or performance in ultra quailty and high quality

only tried one level tho.

I can play it easily in 1600x1200, do not know what id was on about when they said 512meg GFX cards only.

the only difference between high and ultra mode is that nothing is compressed in ultra mode...thats why ive seen reviewers suggest a 256mb card for ultra mode..high and ultra mode are performance differences and not IQ differences

yeah theres such a small diff between ultra and high, its hard to even see it, but hey, if you can run ultra why not?

17" monitors make baby jesus cry. ;)

No, no.
Cheap 17" monitors make baby Jesus cry :D

(I've got a heavy, big, old, ugly, definitely non-flat 17" Eizo F520. 1600x1200@75Hz is very doable. I like this piece of oldschool glass and electronics. :) )

If you feel like nitpicking visuals for ultra quality vs. high quality, look at the hands and fingers of stuff. The transition of the texture from one polygon to another on sharp angles (polygons wrapping around the fingers) looks a lot smoother in ultra quality. Ie. it gives the illusion of smoothness that you'd see with much higher polygon counts.

It's kind of hard to do when they're all trying to kill you, however.

The reason why it's only default for non-existent 512MB is because a 256MB card can't hold all the textures in one scene (there would be more than 256MB of textures), so there'll be some texture swapping across the AGP or PCI-E. If you have a good system it may not be a big problem, but much of the time there'll be a slight pause every once in a while as the textures that aren't needed at that moment are offloaded from the VRAM to the system RAM and the textures that are needed are loaded from the system RAM to the VRAM.

My monitor's native res is 1600x1200 :-D

Of course, my video appreciates 320x200 much more.

I've been playing D3 on High with everything on, 800x600, 50-60 constant fps.

This is my system I ordered a month ago from monarch... and yes I do run at 1600x1200 with aa/af enabled and get constant 60fps which is game limit.
