The Fallout New Vegas Thread * will contain spoilers *

Did anyone else get some sort of download (update?) for New Vegas today? I just opened Steam and it downloaded 251MB of something for New Vegas. No updates listed under game news for today, though.

Can you craft hollowpoints, +P, AP rounds?

Feel as though the .357 and That Gun are too weak.

I was surprised as hell when I warned Eddie about the NCR, too bad the game lags like all hell with more than 5 people on screen.

wow, the writing in this thing...

The anticipation of some "sacrifice" had me shaking in my seat just waiting to see what Obsidian would think up. Pretty hilarious, and such a nasty surprise. How did you guys beat that final area? I had crappy gear, so here's what I did. Before the floodgates of hell opened, I hid in a corner with a stealthboy and 20 or so sneak. I just popped all the bots with the silenced ratslayer without moving an inch. By the time I was discovered, there was one turrent left and the heavily armored sentry bot guy with way too much DT. So, I just shot the turrent while getting shot at, then I went unarmed against the sentry and did the ranger takedown move or whatever it's called. Over and over again I chipped at his armor in melee. It seriously was probably 100 takedown hits before I finally killed that thing. Had to leave my companions behind in the other room.

Btw, the spacesuit from the rocket factory came in real handy for the irradiated water.

You can't craft HP or AP rounds, but once you have the "improved repair" (not sure what the name is) perk, you can craft enhanced ammunition that does more damage overall. JSP/JHP handload and such.

Yeah, the map does feel cramped.

It's not really, if you think about the spacing in the actual world, if it was much bigger you'd just spend most of your time travelling. remember that the map I posted is at max zoom to try and fit as much in as possible, and a whole bunch of them areas are either just landmarks or small camps, especially the ones around the edge. I think they've found a good balance between epic sized world and number of encounters but on a playable scale.

regarding vault 11

Take some emp weapons, there's some grenades like this, they let off an EMP blast and trash robots quickly, definitely take a corner so you're only initially exposed to one side.

Anyone use Arcade Gannon - He was the first follower I picked up and his little plasma pistol is killer. I also eventually picked up Rex and had his brain quest...I tell yeah to get to that stupid Legion fort before it is time in the main plot seems impossible. I tried going up and down the river and all I found were deathclaws - and a LOT of them. Heck just getting down to the beach requires you to go about as far south as you can. Eventually I used the legion brain to make rex have more HP.

I also have found I am using the Bounty Hunter Duster with the Beret from Boone after finishing his quest. My weapon of choice so far is a cowboy repeater with the lever action upgrade and custom stock. I have about 800 rounds of .357 so I don't worry about missing. I have massive amounts of ammo of all kinds except the 45-70Gov. I killed that one guy that was running "protection" through freeside and his hunting revolver uses it.

I also am curious as to what happens to your companions when you dismiss them - do they go back where you originally found them?

Also - what is with all the cards in the game just for Caravan? I haven't even played that since goodsprings. I'm rocking near 40K caps though after hitting up a couple casinos.

Oh i forgot, don't give Boone experimental laser/plasma weapons, that is if you want to actually fight enemies yourself. The only thing I find tricky right now is the swarms of Cazers or whatever they're called, can be found a lot in the west side of the map.

They're pretty easy to take down with a flamer. But yes, I have died at least a dozen times to those damn things... until I tried to kill them with fire :D

I've been sniping their antenna off from long distance, I pack mostly rifles, my lovely silenced sniper is my primary at the moment.

I do have the flamer now and about 1500 ammo, so I really need to get at them with that thing :)

Me, too. My other favorite always tends to be some kind of scoped .44 Magnum. That's just my thing but a silenced, fully modded (in game legit only of course) sniper is pretty damned incredible.

Where are all the side quests?

I just started teh game and i am in Good Springs and Made it to Prim but i haven't really run into any side quests yet,

the only side quest thingy was right after the tutorial some guy wanted me to go up passed the radio tower and later find out he meant to ambush me.

For some reason i felt like in FO3 i was immediately doing side quests.

Be patient. Like you just said: You just started the game. Believe me, they're all over the place.

Anyone know if wiping out the Khans in red canyon can cause the NCR to attack on sight? I was OK faction wise with them but after a little 'payback' visit to red canyon NCR now attacks me on sight.
I made I wasn't wearing anything they could take offense at either, just reinforced leather armor.

edit: I also just noticed NCR, Great Khans & Powder Gangers have gone completely missing from my faction overview and Ceasars is up to neutral from villified for some reason

Dunno. The faction interactions aren't as black and white as that, though. The Khans definitely aren't a "bad guys" faction. I think only the Legion and the Powder Gangers are categorically "bad guys". A lot of people in the NCR rely on the Khans for stuff and seem to have ties to Khan characters.

anyone know where I can find me some dead BOS folks? I want their damned holotapes to get access to their bunker...

The Khans despite their appearance are actually neutral in the game at the start, visit their hut in the red canyon and speak to their leader, he's looking to join up with Caesers Legion, but the quest there lets you sway him either way between them and the NCR. They have a history with the NCR since the NCR slaughtered a load of Khan innocents, Boone one of the main companions was an ex NCR sniper and was at the battle, he has a whole sidequest devoted to exploring what happened.

I personally intend to side with the NCR and sway the Khans in their favour, I don't have a good idea of what that means to the overall story right now but I generally like the NCR.

Yeah in typical fallout nature, it's never black and white, the Khans are basically considering an alliance with the Legion but the Legion representative in their camp is manipulating them somewhat, so you have the chance to uncover that if you please.

Where'd you get that? I haven't found a silenced sniper rifle yet.

At the route 188 trading camp there is a female ex-NCR fighter who sells weapons, for me she had a sniper rifle and a sniper silencer mod for sale for about 1600 caps total, I upgraded that with weapon kits to max strength and gave me a good leg up in battle, that thing is very strong.

Sadly im also at like level 12 and chilling out in my modded vault 13 armor lol.
I wish repairing shit didnt cost so much, as id probably trade it for my plated leather armor stuff

Thanks! I'm an idiot. I was there and definitely looked at her stuff but must have missed it.

There is a unique scoped, silenced & extended mag varmint rifle in a cave east of the legion raid post (the couple of tents where you could free a few captured slaves)
Can't remember the exact name but it was 'flower something' cave.

I arrived at Vegas last night.

I was happy to discover that most of Vegas is outside and apart from 'the strip', because 'the strip' is way too colorful, and destroys the atmosphere. It's also the ugliest part of the game, and makes me feel like I'm playing a fifteen year old version of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six.

I'm loving the atmosphere so far, I'm over 40 hours into the game and I haven't even been to Vegas yet.

I find the atmosphere lends itself to play a neutral character more so than FO3. For instance in FO3 I never had the urge to steal anything or kill off any good characters. But because of the wide open deserts in FO3 if I see something that I really want I'll take it. You'll take a small karma hit but that is easily made up for by selecting the good karma options for quests. So it balances out to a more realistic neutral character instead of being Mr. goody 2 shoes.

Is there something I need to do to listen to Black Mountain Radio? It's grayed out in my radio selection list and I have never been able to listen to it. I have the quest crazy crazy crazy but haven't been past the super mutant guard that warns you not to go up the mountain.

I just did something I almost never do in games, which was to start shooting, without asking questions.

Upon my arrival on the strip, I was I invited to see a guy named Mr. House, at a casino. The game clearly wanted me to go there, but I just wanted to confront that Benny character, who stole my parcel. So I just forewent my visit with Mr. House and went straight to where Benny was staying.

When I arrived at Benny's casino/apartment, the security guys wouldn't let me in. I figured I was going to have to go on some tedious side quest in order for them to let me in, so I just shot them all, about two dozen of them. Now I'm vilified in that area, whatever that means.

I'll continue playing, and see what happens, but I almost never do stiff like that. It's been side quest after side quest in this game and I just wanted to get to the main business.

Hope that hasn't screwed me over.

It means your reputation is bottomed out with the NPC's belonging to that faction, practically this means they'll shoot you on sight.
Then again, if you go in guns blazing I doubt you'll want to make friends with them later on ;)

Welcome to what happens to me all the time.

Vilified is one of the "bad" relations with a faction, it changes with certain factions (some will try and kill you on sight, some will just act pissy at you) but there isn't much you seem to be able to do to break the game plot. I massacred caeser/NCR groups/tops/etc etc. and the game doesn't change so much. A load of NCR troops (i'm back in good stead with them again, until I can join the brotherhood) say new things about "I wish I could have been there when caeser got killed" etc etc. The developers do seem to have planned for most eventualities. Killing certain NPC will block certain quests, but most quests will just get you items/XP you can pick up anywhere.

So kill who you like. Just dont steal things. Stealing is bad for karma...

Oh but benny is supposed to die (well I couldn't see how he could have lived with a loaded magnum and him wearing no armor + being annoying. Plus he gives you the "maria" gun. Which is awesome.

Spot the problem.

Not sure, they're very rare, I had about 6 saved up by the time I got the sniper rifle, and spent about 5 upgrading it to full health.

As someone else said weapon mods maybe random, I love silenced weapons since I'm a sneaky kinda guy, you'll have to visit as many vendors as possible to see what they have.

Yeah there's a mission east of Nipton quite early in the game which takes you to a legion camp where there's powder gangers being held tied up, actually I'm not sure how I ended up with that quest...I'm vilified with the powder gangers...ANYWAY, directly east of that camp a few hundred yards there's a large hill and there's an entrance to the cave up top (on the west side)

More info on this gun - http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Ratslayer

It's very good, comes pre-modded with a scope, silencer and extended clip, there's also a radiation suit inside that cave which comes in handy later in the game for heavily irradiated areas.

Handy tip, the ratslayer can be repaired with parts from the normal Varmit rifle which are fairly common. This gun was my staple gun before the sniper came along :)

I decided to go with Melee weapons at the start. Until around level 8 I was getting owned when there were 4 or more enemies on the screen.

But now I got a knockdown perk of some sorts + some better weapons and wow. I just run around swinging and they all die. Good fun.

I'm going to make the russian character again from painkiller, go around shout "Uhhhrrr I'm de russian, boolets don't hurt de russian" and punching people to death.

That's gotta be hilarious with the bloody mess perk, exploding peoples heads off.

Also later in the game to keep melee effective you get power fists and stuff like that, you also get special moves, in fallout 2 you had snap kicks and all sorts of crazy stuff that would disarm opponents and stuff like that.
