The Fallout New Vegas Thread * will contain spoilers *

Anyone find any new special moves besides the NCR special forces takedown move?

PrincessFrosty, you sound like you missed the space suit (in the rocket factory). That puts the radiation suit to shame.

Finally made it to Vegas, visiting Mr. House and taking care of business with Benny. I'm trying to keep my options open as long as possible. Sounds like I can get a little mileage off my package before I start picking sides. I must say, this game rocks.

Spot the problem.

Did you open the console anytime between 19 and 20th level?

I have been using console save savefile1 instead of quicksave.

I have next to no achievements because of it.

I can confirm absolutely with my own profile: Use of console = no achievements.

I started using the console pretty much right when I started to play for FOV and some other things and I can see that I only have 1/50 achievements officially under my belt.

I don't care about achievements, but it is kind of lame that the console ruins it. If you wanted to cheat your achievements you could mod yourself godly items and and super teleporters. Not sure why they covered cheaters only halfway.

I decided to go with Melee weapons at the start. Until around level 8 I was getting owned when there were 4 or more enemies on the screen.

But now I got a knockdown perk of some sorts + some better weapons and wow. I just run around swinging and they all die. Good fun.

Wait until you find Knock Knock. It's like the melee equivalent of a Fat Man.

If you want to cheat and not botch the achievements, that's what a trainer is for I guess.

Yeah, that too. Though if I were trying to mess around and cheat the achievements I'd probably get the job done quicker with a carefully crafted cheat mod. One that teleports you to all the key locations. And spawns the necessary items, monsters, and such.

I'm not seeing a problem... esplainz plz

This isn't te acheivements I have, its the ones I don't have! So I have the one for reaching level 20, but not for level 10...
I didn't use any console commands until about level 23 (showracemenu to change hairstyle). But i'm also missing ones for having compainions, various weapon kills, etc etc. To be honest it doesn't bother me, but then it does because its buggy. :D
I do have a few mods (type 3/faster running/some extra clothing/realistic lights/dx9 fix etc. nothing cheaty) but not until I was way passed level 10.

Well, I think achievements have something to do with Steam's cloud feature right? Is that even fixed?

I assume so with the number of patches flying around, but then again I havn't loaded up on the other computers to test out the "cloud" part. The whole cloud saving does worry me because my oblivion saved file folder was 700mb but it is great for some games.

Heheh, sounds like my save folder. From the problems I've observed ... they might only be grabbing autosave and quicksave.

Then again it's also possible that they don't get the achievements from saves but still use the cloud feature for achievements in a more direct manner. Like when you you achieve something ingame, your computer phones home and reports to the overlords at steam. ;)

Oh dear, some of my saves got corrupted. :(

Was clearing out Vault 3 and saved after killing the boss, but on reload the game simply crashed. Not only just that, but it took out two or three of the saves most recent before that, including my autosave, so I lost about an hour's worth of gaming time.

No big deal, I'll just skip the Vault from now on since it's not crucial to finishing the game, but still disappointing.

If you've been playing a while, like 30 or 40 hours, I would STRONGLY recommend that you immediately make a copy of your entire FalloutNV game directory, like I did. Next data corruption I get I might lose all of my saves, not just the two or three.

Maybe I should reinstall the game, that might help if something got corrupted, somewhere.

Not using the cloud feature for achievements as I am collecting them and I have cloud turned off...

So after having a great deal of fun dicking around with Lucky and the Repeater I finally got hold of the Ranger Sequoia, Brush Gun and the Garand for AP shots. I am now certain that I am gay for this game.

If there was any decent gear that looks like the NCR ranger vest outfit that actually gave any stats/DT isntead of just being clothes, I would be cowboying the shit out of the wasteland.

I've been saving in a new slot every time, I'm up to over 100 saves lol. I do have a strange bug though, sometimes when I save for the night the auto and quicksave doesn't stick the next morning.

Just played this game around 4.5 hours and really didn't even explore much of the map, just a lot of running back and forth and shooting stuff. Seems like their is a lot of different options as far as quest are concerned, I'm also playing on hardcore and really digging it, seems like it makes the game make a lot more sense in many different ways, not really harder though as I am very good at killing crap even with low level equipment.

That's why I think I like this game so much over F3, the fact that you can take the gunfighting as a player skill-based thing rather than Action Points/VATS-dependent thing. HC just makes it more rewarding.

I agree. I'm someone that tends to use VATS a lot just because I like it but I, too, have found that I've been doing more real gunfighting in this by far than I ever did in FO3. :)

Plus the VATS is...less powerful than actual shots. Take a anti materiel rifle, aim it at a deathclaw and enter VATS, it will say it will cause 80% damage at most, even pointed at the head. Exit it and go into scope and shoot it. It gets one shotted.
Plus VATS is awful for close combat. You use it and youll get a few strikes. But when you leave youll be surrounded.

Oddly enough I'm doing a lot more real gunfighting but I'm also using vats a lot more in this then Fallout 3. In Fallout 3 I got super powerful early on so I didn't really need to do anything fancy. In this one I'm having to be a little more tactile in my fighting style.

Seems like I'm playing this game a lot more like I played Stalker: Oblivion Lost then Fallout 3 which is still a great thing as both games were awesome.

Umm, I think the percentages in VATS is the accuracy rating, not damage.

I don't mean that! I mean the Bar at the bottom of how much damage it will cause is only about 80% damage. But while we're on it the VATS misses much more often than with the plain iron sights.

Anyone have any tips on taking down Nightkins?

Currently doing the quest to get rid of the Nightkins in REPCONNs basement. They are almost always using Stealth Boys and I dont seem to have anything that is effective at taking them down. Any tips? I tried Stealth Boy' and Sneak t get around but I keep getting spotted. Driving me crazy, I ended up leaving to explore some more.

Spiked knuckles solves that problem :)

I found that Boone / ED-E / varmint rifle worked just fine against Nightkin

Same, I only took ED-E with me down there, but was using the varmit rifle, or possibly the ratslayer variant of that, you should be able to target them when invisible in VATS, they were easy enough for me to stop anyway as the cloak makes them look like a large walking puddle of water.

Take it slow and take 1 at a time, I was sneaking and usually getting a sneak critical shot in on their head to start with which helps a lot.

For some reason, I had to unleash 20 shots from my caravan shotgun. I did find that running around the tables allows you to keep your distance with ease.

Ed/Boone party is walking death. Do you get XP from their kills?

The Nightkin quest is bugged. Check the wiki for a workaround.

I have to say, this game is much more messed up than FO3. I am seeing CRAZY AI issues....people stuck in object. Enemies spawning right next to me (had a death claw spawn NEXT to me in the quarry village.....)

It seems much more difficult than FO3 also. Many of the enemies just seem almost impossible to kill with normal weapons.

Well, they don't do level scaling (or hardly any), which is nice. Also it seems like I'm finding myself fighting multiple opponents more often than with FO3.

I don't know if I'd say it's worse because I was playing FO3 when it first came out and it was a heck of a mess until a few patches came along.

Agreed and that's not a bad thing IMO.

I must say again: The writing and storytelling in this one are considerably better than Fallout 3 at least IMO although I think that the majority of folks that have played both games would probably agree with me.

I'm liking everything except the Caesar's Legion stuff. The whole concept just reeks of Bethesda.

Agreed. I found them to be detestable in fairly short order anyways and lacking and decided the Earth would be better with a whole lot less of them including Caesar himself. :)

Really enjoying the game so far. Only mod I'm using is the AMD D3D9.dll fix which has really helped. I'm about 24 hours in so far and have not been to the strip yet or entered any of the vaults (found a couple of vaults however). I've enjoyed exploring quite a bit, but will probably head to the strip sometime before I hit the 30 hour mark to start progressing the main storyline.

Not sure how many hours I logged playing Fallout 3, maybe 150 to 200 with all the DLCs. The games definitely look and feel the same, but they are different in many aspects. Fallout 3 just seemed bigger to me overall. I think the world maps are probably about the same, but in Fallout 3 the places you discovered usually meant you had basements and multiple floors to explore making the game feel alot bigger. There really isn't alot of that with New Vegas from what I have seen in the time I have played so far. However, I think once I start visiting the Vaults and head to the strip that this overall feeling will probably diminish some.

Combat has also changed quite a bit. Guns were the shit in Fallout 3 and really by level 10 you could take pretty much anything on (not counting DLCs). Unarmed and melee where good once fully powered, but there were really a lack of decent options. New Vegas has really reversed that. Guns are defintely hard to use due to the different ammo types for different enemies. Melee weapons now seem a little on the over powered side (have not messed with unarmed at all). I found the Chopper (unique Cleaver weapon) somewhere and I usually keep it in my inventory so I can whip it out in close combat situations.

The ED-E and Boone combo which I am curently using does feel like cheating at times. Plus I gave Boone some curved machete looking weapon I got off of some Caesar troops and now he is a beast at a distance and up close against any human. I'll more than likely drop him at some point soon. The one thing I don't like about ED-E is that he senses every emeny in a 100 mile radius. It's difficult sometimes to pick up which ones are close up and the ones that aren't even close by. What would be cool is if the red radar marks on the radar were either lighter or darker depending on the emeny's proxicimity or something along those lines the which would indicate if an emeny is close or far.

Overall I am really enjoying this game and look forward to many more hours playing it. Also don't now about anyone else, but I have been using the little RV trailer with two beds and a suitcase/briefcase just near the Goodsprings Source as my house since basically I started the game. All I need is a place to store stuff and a bed to sleep in and I'm good to go. There's alot more I could write, but this post is already too long so that's all I got for today.

I only have been in one vault, but that one seemed more deep than FO3 vaults. Vegas Strip isn't big, but the insides of the casinos have a lot more stuff and areas going on than I initially thought. I'm trying to ask questions first before I do any killing in casinos, and I'm finding that approach worthwhile. Especially since I don't have gimped speechcraft.

I haven't even met up with the Romans yet, other than that first massacred town, Boone sniping randoms, and a random small encampment. Will I even care to join up with them in a future playthrough?

it might just be that you're too low level. The best way to deal with Nightkin is to cripple their right arm or legs, they don't perform any unarmed attack so once they drop their bumper sword they're pretty much out of the contest.

Take that Machete Gladius Khukuri thing for yourself, they're far better than even the special machete.
