Skyrim Modding Megathread

I'm using onboard intel HD graphics, with an impressve amount of video memory available considering it's onboard - around 1600mb. I run the game in 800 x 600 with all settings at max other than AA. Are texture poacks going to impact my frame rate?

Please dont tell me to just get a video card - I'm on a slimline case with 220w power supply with no better PSU available on the market and I have 3 kids to feed. The wife would not be happy with me purchasing a case, PSU, and video card.

Feed the kids to the computer and get a better video card.

In all seriousness, there will be mods to improve performance and graphics at the same time, if Oblivion and Morrowind's mod history are any indication.

If that's your situation you're better off getting a console.
Your kids can play it, too. Cheaper than PC parts.

I'm starting to shift into the 'F this game and F Bethesda' camp... I haven't even been able to load a saved game in over 24 hours. I've done 2 re-installs on steam and rolled back/tweaked every file I could locate that contained settings. I'm sure it's my fault but I'm irritated enough to not care. I really don't know what got fubared, but I do know that when I either have to restart a game or I take too much time away from it I gradually lose interest in playing. I only had texture mods and three minor plugin files, none of which are giving me evidence to believe that they're responsible.

Probably not but which ones?

Maybe as simple as a corrupted save? I've been avoiding loading from auto and quick saves to be safe and because I remember back in Oblivion for whatever reason those tended to be more unstable.

Try that yet?

I have tried the 4gb mod in various forms. It was actually after I tried it that I started having this problem. The only system-wide change I have made is that I updated my Intel RST drivers earlier today, but I was already having problems. At one point in my experimentation I got a message saying my saves were corrupt. All of them.

I'm actually more than happy with the performance and impressed with how good it looks at 800 x 600. I just don't know if any of these texture packs are going to impact my performance. Like I said, the intel hd graphics has 1600 mb of memory available to it, well above the 1gb many modern cards have. It seems its major failing point is a lack of extra processing power.

It is also terribly slow (by discrete card standards) memory.

Mod list thread:

I didn't know that spartan made a high res tree stump mod...

LOL, I love how that OP put "because even trees deserve some love." :D :D :D

The few mods I've done so far are at my nexus page.

They're only simple retextures right now, but I plan on doing a guard overhaul like I did for Oblivion, but not as nutty. My tentative to-mod list:

  • Guard overhaul - diverse guards. Do they all shop at the guard's discount store? Attack of the clones?
  • Mage crafting- craft robes, circlets, hoods, staffs, etc.
  • Arrow velocity/physics - better quality arrows fly straighter than cheapo arrows.
  • Weapon balance - not a fan of the straight-forward iron < steel < silver < elven < etc. "tree."

I'm not sure if i was the one with this issue, but my archer couldn't hit targets that were a certain distance away.

Adding this to my skyrim.ini in my games folder seems to have fixed it...

Code:
[Actor]

fVisibleNavmeshMoveDist=12288.0000

I'm considering that tweak myself. I saw a lot of back and forth on the Bethesda forums about it. Some saying it's a cheat making the game way too easy and so on... There have been instances where I've really thought I should have hit something and it's almost like the arrow hits some invisible war and falls short.

What say you?

^^ I like that.

I'm using that arrow .ini tweak, too. It's good!

Why the hell would you even consider High res textures when you are playing at such a low resolution like its going to make any difference ;s

I've had the same issue..they weren't even that far away, and the arrow just vanishes. Stupid. I will definitely give this tweak a try.

Somehow my game died today. For the past few days, I've been using FXAA Injector and a handful of texture mods without problems. Today I followed the [H] tweak guide, still no problems. Downloaded a handful of new texture mods, and all hell broke loose. I was able to play for about 2 minutes, and then coming into Windhelm crashed my game. Reloading a quicksave just before made it CTD before it could load. I renamed my textures folder so it would not load any of them, and it worked. So I went back and put it back to normal, and just renamed landscapes, as I figured the problem file was in there. It still worked, so I went into Windhelm, sold some shit, and left the city. Tried to travel to Whiterun and crashed again. This time I renamed all the folders that contained downloads, so that the game would go back to all stock textures. Now it crashes when I try to load any save. I seriously hope my games aren't corrupt, I've got 65 hours into this character. I'm redownloading the game completely and we shall see what that does.

EDIT: So, after hours of fucking around to no avail, I tried the 4GB patch thingy. Worked like a champ with all mods in tact. Not a single crash since.

I'm guessing this is the game's memory leak but I can play fine for a while and then at some point, usually outside, my performance and fps will suddenly take a big dip. Anyone figured out any ways to help that out?

this is a great idea and pretty damn sad that bethsoft couldn't figure it out on their own. no icons, color coding, nothing, just a bigass stupid list of gear for you to weed through every damn time you want to do something.

What's even more sad is that gear in my house chest won't even be fully organized alphabetically sometimes, and I've noticed things "shifting" around in my inventory before. Very annoying.

Memory leak?

You just quoted yourself, homie. Time for sleep perhaps? :)

Anyone know of a decent steel plate retexture? The nexus is fubared right now, as usual. Just curious. When it comes back up, I'll search. The game runs pretty good for now. The only trouble I still have is when I run skyrim fresh after quitting, loading or continuing my save nearly always results in a CTD with no message. Better than it used to be.

I'm going to say it works. :)

I may even experiment and inch that figure up a little higher and see what it really does. Maybe at 15 I'll hit dragons way, way up in the air. :D:p:p

Why is it aiming the bow takes stamina, but holding it at ready-to-shoot doesn't?

Beth. devs really need to step outside to see how the world works. :)

What do you mean? You can probably equate it to "holding your breath" like in shooters where you can do that with a sniper rifle to get a better aim. In ArmA 2 there is an almost identical mechanic where you hold down a button and your view zooms in a bit. The longer you hold it, the more you get "fatigued" and your weapon aim after you release is off a bit for awhile. Same kind of deal here.

Your idea makes sense (TBH I was surprised it didn't require stamina to hold it, either) but gameplay wise it would just be annoying. Ideally you should only start to lose stamina if you hold it ready for more than 5 seconds or something.

The holding the breath concept makes sense but holding that puppy back at full strength for a bit definitely takes some serious stamina and energy in real life. ;)

Isn't that the point of guards? They are generally issued a uniform.

From what we saw in Morrowind, guards seemed to be levied from the local population. For instance, Balmorran guards were Dark Elves wearing bonemold, Vivec guards were Dark Elves wearing Ordinator armor, and Seya Neen guards were Imperials with Imperial Legion armor. Yet for some reason Bethesda went the easy route with guards in Cyrodiil. I made this mod in Oblivion originally because I didn't feel each city's guards reflected that city's locale.

Same with Skyrim. Why should the Jarls' bodyguard look like the general riff-raff guards? Why should every guard in every town look the same regardless of climate?
