Skyrim Modding Megathread

So did you notice that it removed the clouds over where you haven't been? or... am i retarded and there actually were no such clouds?

As far as I know the vanilla map has clouds randomly everywhere regardless of where you have been. Unless I wasn't paying attention, which is possible. I removed the clouds after a couple of days on my own. I may have to check out this mod though, I would like to be able to zoom in a touch closer, I skipped it when it was first posted in Syrimnexus because I really didn't want or need a Google street view of Skyrim.

The map is essentially a zoomed-out version of the actual game world, including clouds.
Removing the clouds and the weird DoF on the map definitely makes it easier to look at, and the zooming controls just come in handy when you need them.

Haven't thought about it too much, but I suppose you can see which city has cloudy weather before you go there just by looking at the map.

Does anyone know how to fix the mouse-lag that happens with some ATI cards? iirc the [H] testing team also experienced it during their testing.

I'm playing on a OCed 4ghz i7, 24 gigs of ram and a watercooled 6990 and the game is laggy even on 'high' graphics settings. Any ideas?

Well for one, they said that Crossfire support is non-existent for this game. So disable that for this title. You may also want to disable VSYNC using the INI preference tweak, and then in game increase your mouse acceleration. It's very floaty with the default settings.

just force triple buffering through your drivers, that way you can keep vsync and it's way less laggy. this game forces vsync by default and yet does not have such a feature built in, what a joke. apparently there's also alot of code timing in this game that revolves around frame rate, like physics, clocks, rendering, etc. the devs at bethsoft are working with decades old programming methods that nobody even uses anymore, it's really shocking to see them continue bringing this old crap to market.

those on 120hz monitors and high powered cards that can maintain >100 fps, if you disable vsync and spend much of the game in any multiple of the original intended rate, you can run into problems. this can mess up all sorts of things like day/night cycle and npc quest timelines, not to mention those annoying glitches like flashing textures and random objects flying around when you bump into them or enter a room. staying around 60 fps most of the time with vsync off should be no problem though, I did this for a long time and had no quest bugs. I just turned it back on when I got tired of all those other random bugs happening from spiking frame rates.

Half of the people say Triple Buffering works on DX9 games (Skyrim) and the other half say it's OpenGL only. In the Nvidia CP it does not specify that TB is for OpenGL only, yet for other features that are exclusive to OpenGL, it does say OpenGL only. What gives?

The reason the developer does limit a lot of "unethical" behavior is due to ratings boards. For instance in a place like Australia and Germany I believe the game would be outright banned, not just limited to mature audiences.

and half the people have no idea wtf they're talking about, triple buffering applies to vsync only, nothing to do with ogl or dx9. I think this was just a rumor started with some dumbass's blog (still linked to the wiki apparently, hence the rampant spreading), because older games that used opengl were just more often compatible, this is standard in dx9+ now as well. back in the day on older hardware, drivers weren't always able to do this on their own, it had to be implemented in game or hooking apps like rivatuner, now it should also be standard in any version of nv or ati drivers.

Riften during the day with the high resolution version:

It's definitely noticeable. I don't necessarily stare at water in game, but increased effects just adds to the game I think. It's the little things :)

Atmosphere and graphics are very important to me for TES games so I appreciate any improvements that are, and will be, available.

If someone installed those mods on my Skyrim without telling me, I wouldn't notice them the next time I played. That's the definition of a "useless" mod.

The water in those comparison shots could be the EXACT same water just taken at different times (so it looks different). They're so identical there may not even be a mod applied...

Useless to you. Not useless to me and seemingly many others. I just tried out the water mod in game and it is actually a very noticeable difference.

You may want to get your eyes checked Utopia, I don't even have my glasses on and the difference is crystal clear on those shots.

It really isn't.
The water has more ripples, but like I said, wait 1 or 2 frames and the water 'changes' constantly. He could have snapped two separate screenshots of identical water, and it would still look different. It LOOKS better in that picture because the sun glare is on the right-side of the lake (where the mod is).

These two pictures have zero differences... http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/images/711-1-1321913097.jpg

The difference in resolution of that is plainly obvious. However, the screenshots don't really do it justice, moving water looks a lot better with the mod, IMO.

That's believable, but you can't use screenshots to prove the quality of moving water since it's constantly changing. Even the part you circled could have been just the water moving.

The change in water is indeed obvious. The fact that a mod did it, is not obvious.

I'm kind of agreeing with you Utopia, but your last statement has seriously confused me lol.

For the FXAA Injector are you guys using the presets?, if so which one?. I have an i7 920 with a GTX580 and im not sure which one to go with..looking for colorful but not overly sharp.

No unfortunately it doesn't change the draw distance of water. Waterfalls at a distance still look like concrete :(

See this mod here which has a list of recommended preset/injector settings (each their own mod). It also lists a whole bunch of other tweaks, but I just used it as a reference to find some injector settings.

One you might like: Subtle Realistic Colour, it comes in two flavours, mild sharpening and medium, but both of those are dramatically lower then the default configs, and would probably be more to your likening.

Personally I found one that does some neat stuff with the sharpening to give some good photo-realistic effects, and combined it with a very mild colour mod, to shift the tint from default grey to more of a blue.

At this point, just like Oblivion, I have spent more time outside of the game tweaking, then inside playing ;)

I'm using a lot of those same mods. I was also using LAA on the original .exe but the game worked pretty well even before then.

Now it's a disaster of CTDs unless I use the old .exe with LAA on it and have Steam turned off. Really screwed up.

How'd that little Steam update today affect any of you?

Didn't, as I stated in the other Skyrim thread in General Gaming, I have had Steam turned off the last few days and have been running the game through the .exe. I wasn't playing anything else anyways. So on a completely different stroke of luck, I had also turned my PC off last night, so today after work (and after reading your initial WTF post) unplugged my network connection and removed Steam from start up, for the short term at least. I also made a back up of the .exe just in case.

On a side note given that the game (pre patch) did not need Steam to run, I am almost tempted to copy the entire folder over to another drive and see if it will still launch. If that works I may just uninstall the game from Steam until the 1.2 patch comes out or see if the LAA exe fix can be reapplied to the Steam patch.

The LAA fix is what cured any CTD I had the first few hours I played the game, since applying the LAA exe I have had zero CTD,s and I plan on keeping it that way.

Not a bad plan.

I have one idea why things might be FUBARd for me and some other people but maybe not others:

^^ Use this? It comes with a .dll and some other files and I wonder if I have to either reinstall this mod with the new .exe or forget it outright.

I didn't use that mod, the only thing keeping .exe "pure" at the moment is the fact the Steam update was never applied to my install. Once they fix it, or the 1.2 patch comes out I will but for now I'm going to just wait it out.

I'm usually a supporter of Steam, but this is FUBAR.

Judging the fact that all it did was force the use of Steam to run the game I'm leaning towards it being a Steam sided issue.

Well, that's all it was supposed to do, but who knows what might have been slipped in there (intentionally or unintentionally).

Tried the water mod being discussed here and it made a HUGE difference, instantly recognizable. Logic in here is a little amusing, while angles and sunlight can make a difference, it can't magically and significantly alter what's rendered to higher resolution with a noticeable improvement in image quality. Even from the pics it's evident (at least to my eyes), moreover I don't understand calling the significance of the mod into question when we are applauding a paper mod that changes the texture of the books nobody reads (dare we start a poll LoL). I tried it out just to see what the fuss was about and almost immediately decided to keep it.
