Skyrim Modding Megathread

After finally getting Eagle Eye I'm going to download that mod that makes it use less stamina and zoom farther. The zoom level is okay IMO, but the stamina drain for how long it takes to actually zoom in all the way is much steeper than it should be.

A few other screens of realistic water:

Looks nice.

This is unrelated, but in the swampy/hot spring region I was getting weird water glitches where it would flash between normal look and an almost black look rapidly. Anyone else see this? I assume it's just a bug...have seen a fair share of those so far, but thankfully nothing game-breaking.

Are those before and after pics? I can't tell a difference.
That made me curious, actually.
The difference though is that rocks don't move.

Looks better on close-range terrain but the mountains in the distance actually look nicer with default textures (the texture has more depth).

Yikes, I'll have to go with the defaults here. The "high res" landscape make the mountains in the back look awfully artificial.

So I installed that Realistic Water mod and my water now flickers and distorts like crazy. Are there any .ini tweaks that need to be done (or undone) to use the mod?

None that I did. Did you have any water mods installed before?

this is related to vsync, if you have turned it off through iPresentInterval, just reenable this and use triple buffering through your graphics drivers. you'll still have a bit of mouse lag but it's much better than the default vsync, and gets rid of all these related bugs.

Must have mods: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1013

^^ This saved my game. I use the New Vegas version all the time from the same author.

useless now if you're on the steam updated version, since they started hash checking the original exe. you can still get around this by running the old version, but who knows for how long.

ah nevermind I thought it was the same patcher, apparently this new launcher is working with the new version cool.

I actually seem to have fixed it by inserting these water ini tweaks:

Code:
bUseWaterReflectionBlur=1
bReflectExplosions=1
iWaterBlurAmount=4
bAutoWaterSilhouetteReflections=0
bForceHighDetailReflections=1

Vsync forced off the whole time, so I'm not sure it is always Vsync related.

I was loving Skyrim and all the mods. I'm not a mod noob, but starting last night I began having Skyrim CTD 100% of the time when I tried to load or continue my game. The log file ony has the line 'Redirecting CreateDevice'. It has something to do with Post Process Injector or the 4gb mod (I'm using the new non-deprecated one) and even though I deleted those and rolled my settings back to default it still happens EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Did anyone else encounter this?

New UI mod yet?! Wake me up when that happens....such a shame something as important as the UI design was overlooked for what is an otherwise epic game.

Never seen it but if you've done everything else maybe delete the .exe and run Steam's verify file integrity and see if that cleans it up.

I forgot to mention that I already did a verify and restored the old exe. I also deleted the ini files and created them anew. It's reinstall time. Trying not to be irritated.

I noticed sometimes the water is almost completely transparent. In some locations I can see this but not in rivers and such, which it is. It goes back and forth for me though, sometimes transparent and sometimes not.

Same here. In that video I took, the water wasn't. But other bodies of water are.

I see almost zero difference between those faces... :confused:

The default normal maps are FILLED with compression artifacts, and this will affect the way the faces are shaded in-game. It's the kind of thing you'll probably notice in motion more than at a stand-still, but if you look at the actual normal map comparison you should be able to see the difference more clearly. The texture on the faces hasn't changed, only the way they're shaded, and it provides for much softer shading rather than hard-edged squares everywhere.

I agree the UI is pretty shit but honestly it doesn't prevent you from playing the game.

Hopefully you're not just sitting on the game waiting for a UI mod. It might be awhile since all of the modders have to learn Flash or whatever it uses.

Honestly, the original with the "sharp edges" looks more detailed/realistic to me. The modded one looks like he just blurred the normal maps so it looks less defined.

haha no no, I'm not someone that won't play an otherwise great game because it has a flaw or two, it's just that I'm a bit disappointed in Bethesda for this. It was a big complaint in Oblivion, and if I remember correctly they were even talking up making sure the PC had a great interface pre-release.

This is definitely an epic game that should be enjoyed regardless of your thoughts on the UI, but it would be nice to have a mod to fix it :)

Well the thing is you don't actually *see* the normal maps when playing the game, only their effect. Yes, he probably did just blur them, but I can clearly pick out the stair-step edges in the shading on the original faces. If you can't, great, I guess you don't need these blurred-out normal maps, but blocky shading looks horrible to me and I'd rather have blurry imprecise shading than blocky shading :)

I'm not sitting on the game, but I do notice that I get pissed at this game from time to time, and it's always the UI's fault. It always just comes down to how fucking long it takes to do anything with it. Like trying to use a poison. I'm not sure why there isn't a subheading for potions, but looking through a list of 20+, where the names of the poison could range from Weak aversion to Poision, and Damage Health... just ugh.

So i finally find the pots i want, chug them, apply a poison, then leave the menu--after what seems like forever--to get one-shot by whatever it was i was fighting. Well cool. I'll load and spend those 5 minutes in the fucking UI again.

That sorta shit pisses me off and gets me annoyed with the game... but it's only the UI's fault.

I've spent about 60 hours playing so far. I'd bet half of that is spent looking at the UI trying to navigate endless lists which don't give you enough information or icons or ANYTHING outside the basic filters of WEAPONS, etc. Their answer to this was a little hollow triangle, to tell you what the best item in your bags is, of that type. But what if i'm a light armor-wearing type? Tough shit. The game constantly tells me that all the plate i pick up is better.

I tried it out a couple days ago. It is better but I'm waiting for something more finished and bug-free.

even with bugs, the ability to sort by weight is going to be incredible.

edit: Yea i guess i jumped the gun quite a bit. Looks like being unable to sort by weight is among the known bugs :( argh!!!

I thought my salvation was finally here.....alas it is not

"You can't sort by weight, armor etc. i tried to implement that and I might continue to try it, but the way I see it right now I would have to rewrite large parts of the interface from scratch to get it to work."

If it allowed sorting then I'd be all over it. :)

I downloaded the water mod and I feel like I am getting some graphical issues with it. But I can't remember if it happened before I had the mod or not. For instance, coming down from Dragonreach where there are the little waterfalls and "moat" thingies, when I look around, I see like a straight line that stays there when I rotate my camera, kind of like clipping, and it looks weird. Anyone else get this? I can't think of a good way to describe it.

That's a nice looking mod for sorting up there. Looks already a hell of a lot better than the default.

I'm licking my chops for DarN.
