Skyrim Modding Megathread

Why the hell would you even consider High res textures when you are playing at such a low resolution like its going to make any difference ;s

I loaded Chris2012's whiterun texture pack and it does look significantly better. I didn't take a hit to fps, but load times extended considerably, and I noticed that after loading several different areas such as going in and out of different buildings, etc would sometimes cause the textures to fail to load. On objects that were covered by the retex, I could see the bump maps, but everything was a strasnge indigo/purple color. I'm not sure what exactly would cause this - perhaps they didn't load into memory quickly enough.

Also, I've been successfully running at 1280 x 720 at a decent FPS. Looks a lot better in the correct aspect ratio.

does anyone have problems downloading from the nexus? My download screen goes all white and nothing.

also, arrow smithing!
http://www.fileplanet.com/223506/22...Skyrim---Arrowsmith-Simple-Fletching-Mod-v3.0

it does this to me sometimes, i just have to click the dl again, or sometimes if you wait it out it will eventually start downloading.

He just updated and it now has sorting features. :) Still buggy but might be worth a try.

Even in it's previous buggy state, without sorting, i found it much better than the vanilla UI. It definitely decreased the time i spent looking at the UI, especially for things like changing gear.

I just checked it this morning and saw this, about to test it... i can't wait!

edit: it was sweet---sorting seemed to work perfectly, and it also grouped all your equipped items at the top... the enchanting is really bugged tho, unusable actually... so i'm going to have to roll back to the previous version

Anyone know of a mod/fix for random crashing outdoors?

I've done the 'sound fix' as well as running without AA (multi-sample) and with the 4gb LAE patch, but the game randomly crashes when I'm running around in the wilderness. Updated to latest ATI 11.11b drivers and still get random crashes.

anyone know how to make the camera movement go away which happens when you equip or unequip a bow?

i get that it's on my back and stuff, but it's just annoying.

Sadly I tried that new UI and had to remove it after awhile. Not that it wasn't okay, but it had some weird bugs where items would jump around and not sort properly while I was doing enchants.

Yes, the enchanting was WAY broken, i sadly too had to roll back to the previous (un-sorting) version of his mod. Still better than default, even without sorting. Just to be able to look down a list and see the weight/value of everything at once. I really can't wait for him to fix it though, as having the equipped items all grouped at top was sexy as hell.

I also found this Arrow Speed Mod which i love the idea of, but did not enjoy the implementation.

Arrows just never seemed to fly right, so i'm tweaking this guy's files to hit the sweet spot.

In the description, he suggests the previous tweak i mentioned (for arrow distance, which seems to work great), in addition to another which centers the aim on your crosshair.

Code:
I recommend adding these lines to Skyrim.ini in your documents/my games/skyrim/ directory:

[Actor]
fVisibleNavmeshMoveDist=12288.0000
[Combat]
f1PArrowTiltUpAngle=0.7
f3PArrowTiltUpAngle=0.7

Increased Spawns, Loot, and AI

Anyone tried this yet? I'm playing on Master and sometimes think it is too easy, but i'm not sure how sometimes having twice the number of mobs would go down...

the increased drop quality and better AI sound amazing though...

edit: looks like he uploaded the files separately, so i get to check out the AI when i get home. Sweet!

Weapon retexture mod, small right now but it will get bigger.

http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1754

This guy actually knows how to texture instead of upscale add a noise/sharpen - he did great work in New Vegas.

What's even more amazing is he makes them from scratch. I hope he gets a job in the game industry.

(edit)

These textures are fantastic but they're HUGE. The battleaxe texture will set you back 5.4mb. I scaled each down myself by 50% in photoshop, which brought it down to 855kb. That's an incredible difference in size with very little loss in IQ.

Iron Battleaxe at 2024x1024
Iron Battleaxe at 1024x512

Didn't know he'd moved over to texturing Skyrim. I think I saw some of his stuff for NV which was good, but otherwise I haven't seen him actively reskinning since his CS:S uploads on FPSBanana. Maybe he has got an industry job and that's why he's been so inactive?

He's in the Finnish military, I'm not sure why they have one, but he's in it. He also did a ton of skinning for Fallout: New Vegas.

Does the OP m3ta1head plan to edit his post to include all of the mods that were listed? I also recommend removing those large pictures so that finding and reading the mod list is easier. We all know what the post-process injector looks like, plus there are pics on the linked site.

Is scaling the textures down in size easy to learn?

Yep, it's probably the single easiest thing you can do.

If you have photoshop, search for the nvidia DDS plugin, install it, then crack open any texture. Then go to edit > image size, and either double or halve the image size. Finally ensure the texture is still in 32-bit color mode, and save it as a DDS. Color, occlusion, glow maps are usually DXT1 with no alpha, if you have an alpha channel (usually used for transparencies) save it as DXT1 with 1-bit alpha; Normal maps are usually DXT3 or DXT5 because they have complex alphas; I usually go with DXT5.

Back to image size scaling... I'm not sure how much freedom we have with the dimensions/increments. For instance, if a texture is 256x256, I'm not sure if we scale up that we MUST scale in doubles, e.g. 512x512, then 1024x1024, etc. or if you can work up in increments of the original file, i.e. 512x512, then 768x768, etc. I've never tested it, tbh, I always go in doubles or halves.

Here's some good info on textures and TES: http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/Choose_the_right_DXTC_compression_algorithm#DXT3
And there are probably a number of tutorials on YouTube for modding meshes and textures in Oblivion, which is generally the same in Skyrim.

Oh, right, I'm with you now. Yeah, or the entirety of the Soviet army, again ;)

In America, we think your "world events" and "real history" aren't worth mentioning. Finland = reindeer and Black Metal.

Speaking of which, are there any mods to change the main theme song? I may be alone here, but I think it fucking sucks.

I saw a mod that changes the title music to..

*brace yourself*

..a dub step remix of the Oblivion title theme.

Morrowind Theme > most

Also, the OP does need an update.

A megathread isn't a megathread unless the OP is full of info and easy to use as a resource IMO. In its current state, it is really neither.

yeah, the skyrim music doesnt seem that memorable to me thus far :(

Morrowind is definitely still the best by far, but oblivion wasnt half bad either

I'm a bit confused at the current popularity of dubstep. Hopefully I can come up with something more fitting to the game world.

I showed that elderscrolls dub step remix to a friend who insists that he's never heard dub step before (he's stationed in Korea, atm). For the first minute he thought it was pretty good, but when it "dropped" he started freaking out (i.e. throwing up) on ventrillo. :D

Sorry guys, I've been busy-havent had a chance to go through the thread and evaluate all the mods. Ill update the OP in the next couple of days

i just finally got to replace that AntiAliasing and Sharpening mod with the SKYRIM ENHANCED SHADERS which now has HDR. The light definitely feels more real, and it makes darker areas darker, and light sources more important.

:(

Skyrim Enhanced Shaders crashes my game profusely. I love that mod and I love the modder (Tapioks), but when I removed his mod in its entirety and made fresh ini files, I could play stably again. This is after 4 Skyrim re-downloads from Steam, a new windows install and disabling my overclock. None of that helped until I removed Enhanced Shaders. It was so gorgeous, though. Anyone know what might cause the crashing? I have an MSI GTX 580 Lightning card for video.

Hrm, just saw this news bit about managing mods directly through Steam.

Link

Hopefully that doesn't break the way we are used to installing mods. Meaning, If a mod isn't uploaded to Steam, I better still be able to use it via a mod manager.
