Skyrim Modding Megathread

Sounds pretty cool to me as long as they don't remove manual modding, which it sounds like they're not. Downloading mods via Steam (and presumably auto-installing them) sounds like a great idea, much easier to manage than dumping textures into the directory.

i never install a mod without a backup, of say, my textures file in case i want an easy rollback.

As long as they include a very easy backup/restore function, it'll be great. But if you have to go into the folder and back up stuff like you currently have to do before you mod, i don't see any benefit as i'll already have to be in the file.

Hmm, should I be reading too far into that wording? It feels like there should be a BUT in there. Like, are they going to throw modders another hurdle to get around?

Yeah, the but is that they didn't say "install" or "use". "Upload/share/access" leaves a little room for wiggle.

^^ oh yea... tricky motherfuckers! You can still share them, but you can't install them! hahahahaha

So that's why the creation kit is being delayed so long. Gotta have that integration stuff (that we don't necessarily need)

.... read this from the nexus site:

At the moment Steam Workshop is only available for TF2 and it has a relatively limited scope. As someone who hasn't used Steam Workshop and stopped playing TF2 a long time ago I can't speak from experience, but the "How it works" page on Valve's site states:

Starting with Team Fortress 2, you can create and submit new items (such as hats, weapons, badges, boots, and more) for consideration to be incorporated into the actual game. If your creation is accepted for distribution in-game, you can even earn a percentage of sales.

The acceptable items, entry rules, and rewards may be different for each product, so please read the instructions carefully to see where your skills and interests can have the most impact.

By submitting an item to the Steam Workshop or accepting a revenue allocation for an item, you agree to the Legal Agreement.

that's the big question that we don't know .... some of it will be free.... but all?

Is there a tweak or anything yet that slows the passage of time without potentially wrecking quests? I feel like day and night move rather quickly in this game and I wouldn't mind slowing it down.

That is iffy. The time passage mods are usually best used on a fresh game, at least they were with Oblivion. Although the mod that is available on the Nexus has comments that they do not see any issues; you could always make a back up of your save games and try it.

Rumor is that anything below 5 is possibly problematic. 5 and above seems fine.

Yeah, I haven't had any problems... with setting timescale really low. Can't remember, but I think I had it lower than 5, maybe just 5 though. Beat the main quest and all with that. Even had turned off v-sync and didn't use any frame-rate capper.

I will. :)

That's fine. I'll stay safe and conservative but even that 5 setting will be a nice improvement. :)

Which of these should I use?:

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2201

or

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=183

^^ Probably that second one?

Or is it just some .ini tweaks I do myself? Don't want to screw this up!

Unless you want a dynamic timescale, wouldn't typing in "set timescale to #" in the console work, much like it did in Oblivion?

Heh, I wouldn't know. I never did it. I'll have to experiment later.

Dumb question: If you put that timescale value into the console and it works right and does what you want...will that setting "hold" or do I have to do it every time I fire the game up?

Should hold it.

The game remembers the console commands you entered from previous play sessions??

Depends on the command. FOV somewhat does but then reverts itself at a later time (or after certain events), hence the need for the lines in the ini. In Oblivion, using the console to change the timescale was a permanent effect so I would think the same would be true for Skyrim. I haven't seen anyone state otherwise, except the author of the second mod QBZ listed.

To test it out, you can simply type "show timescale" into the console to see if the timescale is still at what you set it to.

^^ Thanks for the info. Considering people have been testing with "5" without many issues, and that I've been playing the game with vsync off and without a framerate limiter, any wonkiness that may result i may already be used to.

i'll check this out tonight, stoked to have some longer days and nights.

I just confirmed this works. :)

And it looks like the setting holds. I did the above, checked it, saved it, shut the game down, came back, loaded that save, and it all held.

5 is going to be a nice difference from the super fast default of 20. :)

So, the exact console command is ~"set timescale to #"?

I'd like to try it out this weekend.

What does timescale 5 do?

Also:

I joined the Mages College in Winterhold as a warrior, haha. I am on the first quest where the old teacher takes us to the Saarthal ruin. According to the prima guide, that is the end of the line for the Legend of Gauldur. Am I going to bork all the previous steps in that quest line? It says there was Gauldur and his three sons total and there are other people to talk to around Skyrim in that quest line. Any ideas?

Timescale of 5 means for every real minute, 5 minutes pass in the game.

I did the quest legend of Gauldur (the one with the three sons + amulet pieces) after I beat the mage guild questline and had no problems.

Hmm, well..

I was following the old wizard down here with the other apprentices, and unless I miss my guess, the 'evil' of Saarthal is Papa Gauldur. I'm going to keep a save handy in case I need to roll back, but I don't know if I can leave the dungeon right now.

Not to be "that guy", but quest discussion is not really mod-related. A lot of this stuff has been going in the general thread.

You're right, my mistake. I have the Skyrim threads bookmarked and I have been using the wrong one. I'll take it elsewhere.

NUDE MOD NOT WORKING!!!!

Anyway, yeah, using the DL manager, the nude female mod is not working. Can't figure it out. Is there a console command or something that I need to do in game? I install and enable it in the manager. Other mods work fine. Just not this one.

Help me see the naughty bits please! So lonely.

Oh yeah, there is a nude MALE mod too btw. It comes in hairy too! yay...

i just finally got to replace that AntiAliasing and Sharpening mod with the SKYRIM ENHANCED SHADERS which now has HDR. The light definitely feels more real, and it makes darker areas darker, and light sources more important.

comparison grabbed form skyrimnexus images... he has like 100 uploaded: http://static.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/images/822-2-1322579352.jpg
...

Anyone using this? I downloaded it, but I'm reluctant to install it because my install is working great and I saw that it messes with .ini files. Looks good though.

I am going to try it out and I'll let you know. So far I've had bad luck with any files that mess with the dx.dll like the FXAA mod. It crashed Skyrim upon launch, and this goes for both systems. I've had one random success, but then it randomly started crashing again.

Okay, let's see..

Edit: Just tried it out, seems to work as shown in the pictures. Not sure why you mentioned needing to modify any INI files, as that seems to be reserved for if you're also running that FXAA mod. I'll be keeping this mod. :)

Yeah, I tried it also. The readme mentioned that if you ran the launcher (I don't, I use the 4GB launcher instead) it will overwrite some .ini settings (making your graphics card be ENB, for instance). Since I don't run the launcher it didn't seem to change anything on mine. My impression is that it looks okay outside, but it really makes the interiors look a lot better. I did disable the sharpening though, I didn't like the look of that.

I'm still using the modified sharpening settings that (I believe) m3talhe4d (?) posted awhile back. I don't think I'd even be able to play the game without them now. Sometimes I toggle it off just to see how bland and grey the world looks without it.

yeah, the skyrim music doesnt seem that memorable to me thus far :(

Morrowind is definitely still the best by far, but oblivion wasnt half bad either
I think they need a better algorithm for it, especially to change it up more (see dragon, queue epic music, waters it down). I love the title theme, I think it's the best so far. Morrowind (my first TES game) was great, but honestly, it sounds just like LOTR to me. Skyrim's theme has a lot of emotion too, but it's more "fight." Also, the fact that it's all in the dragon's tongue is epic. :D

I'm loving that weapon texture mod pack, oh man does it look great. I'm definitely going to play through the game again in a year's time when all the good texture and other graphical enhancement mods are "completed."

The music has been outstanding to me. This game is better than Oblivion by far IMO and feels like more the proper sequel to Morrowind. I don't think I can go as far as saying it's as good as Morrowind was pound for pound but it's a sight closer than Oblivion ever was.

On topic: Setting that timescale from default 20 down to 5 has been huge for me. 5 should have been the default all along IMO. Can't recommend it enough.

Yeah, they do have a good algorithm for music. Morrowind had a few top notch awesome songs, but this is solidly great through and through. It has more variety. I don't really care about the nord voice choir but I never hear it except for word walls (minimal) and final quest of the main quest.

And they even borrow a song or two from Morrowind exactly as it sounded. (not talking about the main theme song). So I'd say that Skyrim is an improvement over Morrowind's great music.
