good, small, powerful mini-itx case (non-black)

Wow, very impressed with the recommendations. Appreciated. Yes, small volume is desired rather than footprint. Let me summarize the suggestions as I see them: The Fractal Design Node 304 mentioned was my fallback idea if nothing better was found. The SENTRY and A4 are great but not out yet as...

good, small, powerful mini-itx case (non-black)

I have looked through newegg's cases for mini-itx and they are huge! It's disappointing they are even bigger than my SG01 micro-atx i have used for 10 years now. I was hoping for something smaller. Are there any good cases that fit these minimum parameters: (1) compact size (2) accommodates...

    Silverstone SG08 @ Computex

Agreed. A lot of us find black boxes that have been in vogue for the last 15 years ugly. It's like we are in a time warp like back in 1918 again when Henry Ford said about the model T "Any customer can have a car painted any colour that he wants so long as it is black".

P67/Z68 ITX: what the manufacturers say

I think most people nowadays want USB3 & SATA 6g and it's been mentioned several times in this thread, yet none of these mobo's are true to this form. Instead the manufacturers for now are just gluing a few of those on for show to fool the masses and are otherwise older standard USB2 & SATA 3g...

    Wait for ivy bridge

Intel has hinted for some time about revolutionary technology coming with Ivy Bridge. Today they released details of what they are doing: 3-D Tri-Gate Technology for 22nm Ivy Bridge So that's where the dramatic performance increases and power consumption decreases are coming from. In itself, a...

    Wait for ivy bridge

Let me tell two tales: I currently have a SG01 with E6600 that I have been running for years. It's been a good system and does well even with most of todays latest software titles and devices. I feel like I got in at a good time with the right CPU, case, and fittings. And this was no...

    Wait for ivy bridge

Yawn. This has nothing to do with waiting for the next thing or the next thing or the next thing blah blah blah. I thought I spelled that out clearly in the initial post which was intended to ward off the usual stupid regurgitation of that old response, but it didn't work. So let's recap this...

    Wait for ivy bridge

I am mainly looking at mini-ITX socket 1155.Sandy bridge is a nice processor line, but todays motherboard offerings have too many weaknesses. By the time all of todays mobo issues are worked out it will time for the ivy bridge 22nm dye shrink that will give a 20% performance boost. USB3 will be...

mini-ITX + Sandy Bridge builds thread. What's your build looking like?

My build is on hold. The motherboards just aren't good enough yet. By the time they address the weaknesses also meaning eliminating the stupid usb 2 ports off the back panel, it will probably be time to go for the ivy bridge 22nm die shrink instead of SB.

Any Sandy Bridge m-ITX coming? Any news?

Zotac spec says "Support up to 16GB memory". That's interesting. Does it mean 2x8GB dimm's are on the way?

Any Sandy Bridge m-ITX coming? Any news?

I don't understand why manufacturers seem to think ITX needs inferior chipsets, inferior bios, inferior overclocking, inferior power supplies, and so on. Yeah that may fit the HTPC niche, but it seems to me the mainstream ITX builder wants the exact same powerful system found in a normal tower...

    Lian Li PC-Q09FB.. so close

Not perfect at all! Insufficient power, insufficient graphics space, insufficient cooling. So what's wrong with the Lian Li Q11? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112297&cm_re=q11-_-11-112-297-_-Product

Any Sandy Bridge m-ITX coming? Any news?

Just keep in mind only 2 of those ports are SATA 6g. Similarly only 2 of the USB ports on the back panel are USB 3. The thing I like about zotac though is the expansion card slot currently occupied by wifi. That could be very useful for itx which is otherwise very limited on expansion possibilities.

Any Sandy Bridge m-ITX coming? Any news?

It appears every single mini-itx sandy bridge motherboard of this coming generation will be a hodge podge of USB2 with only a few USB3 ports. I don't want USB2 ports on the back panel or to be forced to use USB2 internally or on the front panel. That's a pretty glaring deficiency for a...

Any Sandy Bridge m-ITX coming? Any news?

Careful as even though upcoming gigabyte boards are labelled as usb 3 and sata 6g even though they are mostly full of stupid usb 2 & sata 3g ports. After owning a system with a mixture of usb 1 & 2 I never again wish to deal with a bastardized system like that because years down the road it...

    WiNDy Cases

That is sadly true. The Windy ITX cases provided a glimmer of hope, but alas their achilles heel is they have just an 80mm cooling fan. That is an embarrassment when others already have 120-180mm fans in their ITX boxes. Providing links to Windy mid tower cases with bigger fans is a ridiculous...

    WiNDy Cases

They look like very high quality and I was excited for a second, but the specs are a show stopper. I could be wrong but it looks like a single 80mm fan, room for just a 7" video, 2" cpu cooler and the PSU??? That is no gaming box. Sorry, next.

    SilverStone SG07 Suggestions

The SG07 looks like it is addressing key shortcomings of the SG05/SG06 and that is a great. I think it brings perfect expansion for todays needs: a slim dvd writer (can get these for $40), one 3.5" hard drive (a 2TB 7200RPM HD is nice), full length video card, built in 180mm cooling fan, wow. On...

    ITX the new SFF standard?

In my opinion MicroATX has no concessions at all. But miniITX is too embryonic at this stage: 1. Cases are needed that fit 12" video cards. 9" is just not enough for today's offerings. Tin snips and appendages hanging out is not acceptable to me. 2. A good case is needed. Nobody makes one...

    Silverstone SG06

As far as I can tell the SG06 is a SG05 with an aluminum front plate and silver is offered instead of just black.

    SG02, P5E-VM, TRUE: will it fit ?

The fact some people do it seems a rather weak argument. If reliability is important, secure the drive to the manufacturer specifications which will always tell you to do so using 4 side or bottom mounting screws.

    SG02, P5E-VM, TRUE: will it fit ?

I don't think you don't want a hard drive dangling loose. It is not designed for those kind of vibrations and torquing. Hard drives should be kept cool and anchored securely.

    [YourNewCase] SUGO ... 5! GO!

Wow, the SG05 shows tremendous promise, but it isn't ready for prime time. What I love about it: perfect size. They have shrunk the SG01/SG03 in HALF yet can still drop in a 2TB 3.5" hard drive, slim blue ray drive, and a gaming graphics card. Some people who want to fit more stuff in their...

    Silverstone SG04 - Handle Removed

A dozen drill holls in the top makes it look a bit shabby I am afraid. Also baffled as to why they changed the front panel to rounded. DVD trays I have seen are not rounded so it will not be flush and not look right. It also takes up more space this way. The SG04 seems such a big step backwards...

Silverstone SG04 to debut at CES?

I was a real believer in Silverstone in the SG01 era and am a happy owner of one. I liked a lot of what they did with the SG03, except for that ugly side vent. Not only did the SG04 keep that part that people complained about the most, I can't hlep but agree they have added more "rice" with the...

    Mini-ITX 2.0

Here are the specs. Looks decent. Does anyone see any promise that one day we can shrink down to Mini-ITX instead from Micro ATX? I see a glimmer of promise here, as well as some promise in the 2.5" hard disk form factor currently offering 300GB @ 10K RPM raptor, 500GB @ 5400RPM from others.

Silverstone NT06 cooler fails TomsHardware test

They did not like it. I have one and don't mind tht fact it cannot be installed with the motherboard in place and of course what sets this one apart is it is low profile so that it fits SFF cases. The review is here.

    Updated Shopping List...Do you approve?

That Seagate drive is VERY noisy. Read the reviews at newegg and there are endless complaints about it. I have one and while the spindle motor is silent, the raspy seeks are louder than any drive I have heard in my life. And if you run Vista, it is always chugging away at the drive doing...

    Silverstone SG01 Evolution Build

Interesting strategy posting *after* buying rather than before. As far as I have seen, buying expensive ram gives you your worst bang for the buck. The performance difference between the best overclocked versus the very, very slowest is a few percent--if that on Core 2 Duo systems. These days if...

Ordered my new parts tonight. :D

You have my sympathy. I have seen nothing compelling about the 2900XT, it's junk. When the unstable drivers are blowing up and your system is suffering a meltdown due to the outrageous heat it produces then maybe you will wish you got a 8800 which costs less, is in the same performance category...

How is the SG01 for cooling?

Go SG03 to get the 2x120mm fans and grab a NT06 cooler. SG03 also allows SLI and has other small improvements comparatively. The only reason one might contemplate the SG01 is: 1. the shape; they are the same size though 2. the side windows 3. hard drive cooling (placed by 80mm fan) 4...

    Silverstone SG03 new build **PICS**

Keep in mind the SG03 is no bigger than an SG01--same size in volume. But because it is shaped like a mid tower, it looks deceptively big without a reference object next to it to put it into scale. I think silverstones are worth every penny. They are true quality in and out. Quality...

    Sugo SG01 owners heat question.

The Silverstone FX-121 fan should do nicely. It's designed for that case, but be warned it won't fit with the NT06; it's an either or situation.

    NT06 and PSU

My main nit with the Silverstone PSU's is they are not modular. I will only buy modular supplies. Bundles of unused wires seems old fashioned to me. Also cosmetically speaking black power supplies (like Silverstone) look good in black computers, but are ugly in others like the unpainted aluminum...

    Sugo SG01 owners heat question.

First of all, an 8800GTX does not fit in an SG01, so what modifications did you make to allow that? What power supply are you using? A high flow 120mm fan type is key. Is there a lot of cable clutter blocking airflow, particularly fat ribbon cables like IDE & floppy? I have a SG01 + NT06 +...
