I'm building a computer for a friend and I now have to decide between getting him an 8800GS and a 9600GT. They're both fairly fast GPUs, but I'm questioning whether or not he'll need the small amount of extra muscle the 9600GT provides, seeing as he'll be playing at 1440x900. Some benchmarks I...
I'm a bit clueless when it comes to power supplies, and some recent readings from SpeedFan have me a little concerned. I've had some artifacting problems with my 8800GT, and I didn't put too much thought into a dying PSU. This is all on an Antec TruePower Trio 550W that I got in August 2006...
Hello, videophiles. I'll soon be purchasing an Xbox 360, and I'm looking forward to playing HD games on my computer monitor. I recently learned that the Xbox 360 cannot automatically letterbox content, and that some games will scale up no matter what, so I now have some interest in locating a...
Thanks to a good sale, I'm now able to acquire a new gaming mouse to replace my Razer Copperhead. (It works fine, but it's just not my type of mouse and I'm selling it to a friend.)
Now, I have put some thought into the Razer Lachesis, but I'm just not that interested in having 4000 DPI, so my...
I was very happy when I got my 8800GT. The performance was great, and I could play newer games with great framerates. A few games had random low FPS, but I chalked that up to young drivers. I did have a few instances of games artifacting and locking up, but that stopped after I got the 169.02...
*Sigh* Just when I get my new card, something comes up. With my 7900GT, I could mana 75+ FPS in WoW, constantly, but now, with my 8800GT, I seem to have LOST power, and I'm getting around 50FPS in most situations. Is it likely that this is some weird conflict with AA/AF settings, or is it just...
I only got my 8800GT on Friday, but today, there have been three occasions on which I had my screen suddenly artifact, then my system locks up. I updated to the 196.something driver, so it's possible that it has something to do with it. My power supply is only 550W, so I was thinking this might...
Thanks to the wonderful benchmarks, the bargain price, the cooler operation, and the lower power consumption, I've determined that this is definitely the card to replace my aging 7900GT. I know it's supposed to come out soon, but do we have any exact date? A friend told me that a handful of...
I want to OC my E6600 further on my DS3, but running it 1:1 is bottlenecking me, because my DDR2-667 refuses to overclock more than 30MHz or so. Where in the BIOS could I set a divider that would make my RAM run slower than my FSB? Is this even possible, or do I need new RAM?
I'm looking for a new monitor for my PC at some point, and I've decided on a 22" widescreen one. However, I can't decide which brand. What can you guys recommend? I'd be gaming, mostly, but I'd watch movie sometimes too. Also, component video support via adaptor would be great.
I've got my heart set on the ATH-A900 for a new set of headphones, but I'm really on the fence about a new source for them. I don't really need a headphone amp, so the choice is mainly between a USB DAC and a regular PCI sound card. My budget is anywhere up to $100 or so. Anyone want to...
I've made up my mind that I don't like the G5 or MX518. Currently, I'm considering either the Habu or the Copperhead. Does anyone else have an idea for me?
I want something free with plenty of options for me to mess with for converting my DVDs into iPod compatible movies. Heck, just a good DVD Ripper would be nice, as I can just use Videora to convert them.
My inner audiophile is finally awakening, and I'd love to make a serious move towards quality at some point. I plan to get some nicer headphones and start ripping my favorite CDs in higher bitrate to enjoy on my iPod, but first, I need a suggestion for a pair of headphones. I'd be wearing these...
I'm thinking of getting some Shure E3Cs, but I have a few questions first.
1. How's the isolation on these? My Sony noise-cancelling headphones are nice, but outside noise is still pretty clear.
2. How's the sound quality? Will it "blow me away?" How's the bass? Even my friend's cheap...
My dad listens to a lot of classical music on his MP3 player, and he's been using low quality earbuds to do so for years. I feel bad for him, in terms of both comfort and quality, so I want to get him a nice new pair of earbuds this year for Christmas. We're looking for something under $50, but...
I'm thinking of passively cooling the 3500+ and 6600GT in my family's HP computer. Any suggestions for heatsinks that'd get the job done? The case isn't terribly large, so no huge CPU heatsinks. Also, if the price could be kept down, I'd appreciate it.
My 7900GT seems to buzz slightly when it's doing 3D rendering. It started somewhat recently. The performance is fine, but I'm worried. Could something be shorting out? Should I RMA it?
The Olevia 427V showed up in my local Office Depot ad for only $500. It's a 24" widescreen with a variety of inputs and 720p. My family really should be getting an HDTV, and I'm wondering if this would be a good choice. Here's its Newegg page.
Don't you think that every process shrink leads to a new name? I mean, Yonah and its cousins were 90nm, and they were "Intel Core." When Conroe and the other 65nms came out, they were "Core 2." So, would it be reasonable to suspect that Ridgefield, Penryn and Harpertown* will be the "Core 3"...
I live in Minnesota. It's a really freaking cold place. I plan to harness that power to drop my temps. Thus, I'll run an insulated duct from outside, through my wall, and into my case. I wonder what'll happen to 40C temps when 0 to -15C air is being pumped into the case?
My friend brought his A64 3000+ up to 2.4 on stock volts yesterday. We tried going higher on stock, but we couldn't POST with it on stock volts. How much is safe? We're attempting to go higher.
I'm looking for a digital camera, something in the $100-$200 range. I'd like the "chunky" form factor, if at all possible, but anything will do. I want good image quality (Not obsessed with megapixels.) and a fast-ish write speed so I can snap a series of photos without having to wait too long...
I finally found out what the hottest part of my computer is: My DS3's passive HSF. Any suggestions for something to replace it? I'd perfer something with an actual fan, and not terribly expensive.
Is there an expansion slot fan that could take out the heat that the TOP of my 7900GT produces? It's honestly the warmest part of the card. The HSF is doing its job well, but there's a fair amount of heat coming out of my exhaust fan, even at idle.
Should I be able to pull off this overclock without adding voltage beyond stock? I have a CNPS9500LED, and I'll soon be getting some Patriot RAM that can easily handle it, but will the board hold me back, or maybe the chip itself?
I helped my friend build a computer earlier today. As he was using it, he unplugged his keyboard, and the system quit on him. He tried starting up, but the motherboard wouldn't take power for more than a few seconds, then not at all. So, did he short the motherboard out through the USB port, or...
I was planning to get the Razer Copperhead and a Saitek Eclipse II, but before I make any of my plans solid, I'd like to know if there's any problem with either of these. I heard that the Logitech G5 is the Copperhead's closest competition, but I generally dislike the feel of Logitech mice...
After repeatedly trying to get it to work in my DS3, I'm planning to send back my two 1GB sticks of OCZ Gold. Unless someone has a suggestion to get it working, I'll be boxing it up, sending it in, and buying some new stuff. I'd like to operate at DDR2 800, but 667 is okay too. Also, I don't...
What BIOS options do I have to change, or what bios do I need to upgrade to in order to ue my 2.1v DDR2 800 RAM from OCZ? I've tried fiddling with it in the past, but to no avail. Also, what exactly is a memory deivder, and what does it have to do with my FSB?
After replacing my DS3, and the crappy Intel HSF, I've attained a new level of powah. My Zalman CNPS9500 is making it idle at 20C. OCage, here I come. Just so you know, my "dead" E6600 is this one. (The DS3 was dead.)
I made two threads before, thinking my E6600 was broken. Well, I RMA'd my DS3, and recieved the new one today. We'll see if it starts up. WIll I need an anti-static mat to put my DS3 on if I just want to insert the processor and its HSF, or could I just put it on some surface like its box? This...
I'm looking for a headset for my new rig. I'd perfer USB over standard audio connectoins. My issue is that I don't want to spend much more than $50, but I don't want to have them feel like a compromise. Like, a set good enough to listen to music and stuff with, but one that'll also work well for...
As I've said earlier, my E6600 was giving super high temperature readings. So, I re-seat the HSF in case it wasn't making contact. Bad idea. It refuses to post after that, then I notice two bent pins on my mobo that weren't there before. The E6600 was on for about an hour at temps WAY over...
Contrary to my old thead, my E6600 probably isn't dead, rather, the motherboard was damaged by the crappy heastink/fan it came with, and I'm looking to replace it. Any suggestions for a new HSF? I will be getting AS5, and I just want the processor to be cool, above all else. Room for...
Who else will be seriously tempted to get one? I already have a Core 2 machine, but for encoding, using the wonderful, wonderful OS that is OS X, and general Maccish fun, I want a Core 2 Mac Mini. Once they're out, that is. Should only be a few months, though.
Last night it was giving high temperatures. Around 60-70. The HSF wasn't even warm, and it wasn't slowing down, so me and my friend passed it off as an erroneous reading. The HSF must not have seated properly, becuase Now I can't even seem to POST with it. Is it more likely that I got a bad...
Okay, so I reset some failsafe BIOS settings. To make sure everything will work. After that, I can't POST or anything. The GPU fan spins up, then the CPU fan starts to spin, then it all shuts off. I've cleared the CMOS, but to no avail. I don't think it's my memory. The DS3 was working just...
