Last night it was giving high temperatures. Around 60-70. The HSF wasn't even warm, and it wasn't slowing down, so me and my friend passed it off as an erroneous reading. The HSF must not have seated properly, becuase Now I can't even seem to POST with it. Is it more likely that I got a bad reading, or that the chip fried itself? I was thinking about getting a $40 Celeron to check the board and update the BIOS, see if the chip is still good. It seems like Intel would replace it, so there's little to worry about. I'm just not sure.

Was it stock or how much voltage did you give it?
 
As you already guessed, I think the heatsink wasnt making good contact and the chip could be damaged.

Would the $40 Celeron even work in a high-end board like the DS3? If the chip is damaged, Intel will replace it, I just followed the instructions.
 
Okay. That's good. We can update the BIOS, to improve the board and make sure the E6600 is dead, and/or see if there's something wrong with the board as well. Also, when I removed the HSF, I saw the likely culprit: An ugly looking flake made of thermal gel. It probably messed up the conduction, even when contact was made.
 
Yeah everything does point towards the naughty gel.
I'd drop the paste manufacturer an email and offer to send them the Gel piece.
If lucky you'll get something for your trouble.
 
There was no "manufacturer." The HSF just had a few strips of gell on it. They smooshed themselves on the processor when contact was made. Also, it could be that there was too much, and no thermal conduction occured. The strips were awfully thick.
 
What brand was the gel, so just in case other people are using they can stop using. I mostly use Arctic Silver 5, I hope E6600 is not dead , but if it is I hope you get a quick replacement from intel or gel manufaturer. GOOD LUCK
 
There's still a chance it's the BIOS. The guy on tech support said he'd seen systems go six months, then quit, and be fixed by switching the processor and updating the BIOS, then switching back.
 
Dont intel chips have some kinda overheating protection? Even if you take the hsf off the chip should throttle it self down.

Gotcha.
The heatsink pressure squeezes most of the thermal layer out, the pressure is quite high.
Its thickness shouldnt matter enough to cause the problem although... the reason it was that thick might have been due to the lump in it raising the height the compound is levelled off at. I dont know their manufacturing process so thats a guess :)

Stick the lump to a piece of paper with a big red arrow pointing at it.
Just kidding, although thinking about it, that may help them decide in your favour if you send it.
Take a photo in case things get lost.

Yes I wondered if there was a way the chip might overheat with that protection working and came up with this.

The thermal sensor is located at a specific point. If that was around the point where a good enough heatsink contact was made, the sensor wouldnt be as hot as the rest of the chip.
Before the cutout triggered the rest of the chip could have received damage.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Intel's thermal sensor located within the die as opposed to being external? It wouldn't make much sense at all for the thermal sensor to be external, as the temps can fluctuate too wildly outside the core; after all, the core is what is being protected, not the IHS. ;)

Sorry to hear about it. Be sure to check for bent pins on the socket. Not have the heat sink straight can cause bent pins.

It's inside the die. This not normal for any Intel processor since at least the Slot 1 P2. They noramally protect themselves pretty well.

I used a Celeron D to test mine, they work fine on these boards.

I imagine the sensor will be touching the core.
If that part of the core is cooler than the rest of it and temps are rising high....

Have you tried holding your finger on a CPU core and switched it on, it gets hot REAL fast.
The parts of the core that werent making good contact with the heatsink could have been at extreme temperatures if the cutoff didnt happen in time.

It's probably partly my fault, but the thermal paste was screwed up, methinks.

Yep Maximum PC did the same thing. They unplugged the fan and the temps only rose to 75C and would not raise any higher under full load even with trancoding an entire DVD to Divx without a CPU fan.

I don't think the CPU was fried.

I'd love to see the pins on the socket. I've heard of folks bending pins from putting the heatsink on crookid or too much pressure on one side.
 
How do you know? It gets stuck in a reboot loop. GPU fan starts up, then the CPU fan starts, then it stops and the whole process starts over. Did it work for you?

If BIOS resets don't work, please STOP trying to start your system, you could damage it! Something is shorted out and the computer is rebooting to save or protect itself. Try to find a Celeron D to test your rig with? Remember to clear the BIOS after you install the Celeron.
 
News! I think I might have bent one of my mobo's pins when I was trying to re-seat the HSF. I examined the mobo closely, and two pins seem slightly off. Is there any chance of repairing the mobo?
 
What type of motherboard were you using?

Consider the fact that I've personally installed and uninstalled over a thousand different LGA 775 processors in 2 or 3 different Asus motherboards at my job. In most cases, even though I bent more than a few pins, the motherboards would still boot right up and load Windows.

The only time we've actually killed a motherboard was due the the crappy default Intel HSF seating, which I believe shorted out some of the traces close to the pinholes where the HSF fastens. Perhaps something is being shorted somewhere, as Donnie pointed out earlier.

If you're lucky, they'll let you RMA the board. All it takes is one pin to be bent and no worky!

It's not impossible but very hard to line up the spring loaded pins on the socket. I'm not real sure about repairs on Sc-775 itself. Sometimes you can see scratches on the contact side of the processor. This helps pin point which pins and where they are missing the contact points or pads.

I wish like hell now I would have save pics of the last one I tried to fix. The bad news is trying to bend the pins to correct their alignment, could kill the Processor if you miss! The best, not because it is easy but because it is safe, is to RMA or get a new board. With luck the Processor wasn't damaged.
