I made two threads before, thinking my E6600 was broken. Well, I RMA'd my DS3, and recieved the new one today. We'll see if it starts up. WIll I need an anti-static mat to put my DS3 on if I just want to insert the processor and its HSF, or could I just put it on some surface like its box? This is the only test I'll be doing with it.
 
DO NOT use anti stat bag to put motherboard on. only the inside is anti stat. it directs the static electricity to the outside of the bag dammit. if you are not sure, dont give advice. especially advice that could conceivably bork his shit.
use a piece of wood, or thick cardboard.
 
You don't need a mat, and yes the bag is a bad idea. Just set it down on a table, making sure there is nothing under it. Not really that big of a deal.
 
The box would work just fine. Antistatic bags conduct electricity - if you use that don't be surprised if you fry something.
 
I must say of the 50+-60+ PCs I've built for myself, friends, family and customers, I think I've always set the mobos, RAM, HDDs, etc. on the antistatic bags. Never had a problem with a single one. I don't really do it much anymore - I have a nice cardboard setup for all of my builds now, but I think you guys are freaking out about nothing. That's a lot of chances to "fry" something and it never happened. Have any of you personally witnessed something getting "fried?"

Well...the whole point of the anti static bag is to draw staic OUT of the bag, so putting the board on the side of the bag that it transfers the static too would be a bad idea. You are better off on Cardboard, or a table. Sure... there is a slim chance that it could happen, but there really isn't any reason to use this method... so why do it?
 
i to have put many a board on the static bag in which it ships and have had no problems. But the posters are correct, it is conductive. I'd shy away from wood aswell though, unless you are sure of the moisture content. I've used the foam pad included with boards aswell to set them on, it works well as the board will not slide off of it. I am not sure of its conductiveness so check before doing so. I'd say your best bet is plain old cardboard as stated above, you know its dry, or it wouldn't be rigid.

Bad News: Temps are THROUGH THE ROOF. That's about to be solved though, as I'm getting a Zalman 9500 and some AS5 on Thursday. :)
 
what are you using to read temps? for asus boards, the consensus seems to be pc probe2. people are getting strange readings from coretemp.
 
hey, do you guys in the US get all components in an anti-stat bag?

i'm in Hong Kong, and everything i've bought apart from hard drives only come in bubble wrap. Even Asus boards and other big brands, motherboards and video alike. Only a long time ago did my GF2 come in a plasticy bag, and not like the proper anti-stat stuff either!

Is it because it's so humid here that they can't be bothered to spend that little extra on anti-stat bags?

Be sure to check you IHS on the E6600. I couldnt believe how bad it was my E6400. Intel deserves a kick in the nutz for that QC. I had to void my warranty and lap it. Really helped temps and my OC.
 
What I think I might do is RMA it anyways. Although it may be functional still, it was operating over specified heat range for a long time. (Not my fault. The Intel HSF didn't mount properly, and also killed my old DS3.) If I decide to get a new one, it's getting lapped, AS5'd, and cooled by my Zalman 9500.
