Warhammer Online Thread!

Also, does anyone know if there is/will be a tutorial system like in WoW? That's what helped me get into MMO's in the first place, I always find them confusing as heck

There isn't one at the moment and I haven't seen anything indicating that there would be.

Anybody seen this yet? Not sure how it works, but its interesting. Make sure to let the flash load all the way.

http://www.road-to-war.com/

I was doing it for a little while until I found out people were making fake email accounts to boost their stats or whatever. That pretty much killed that site for me. It's basically a marketing thing but if they wanted to make it a real game they have a lot of changes to make IMO.

I've been in beta very early on and watched the game change and grow a great deal, as you'd expect in beta.

I love the public quest system. The tome of knowledge is also great. These two systems are my favorite and give it a huge edge over other MMO's.

My only complaint at this point is the world doesn't feel "alive" to me. At times it can feel alittle empty. Maybe alittle bland. Like the art department needs to place more items in the buildings to make them feel lived in, more stuff to bring the world to life. And in the past month I have seen changes along these lines.

I have absolutely no doubt warhammer will be a great MMO. People are going to compare it to WoW but keep in mind, at launch WoW didn't have much in it. So much was patched in, so much changed that it's hard to remember what WoW was missing at first. Very little endgame.
War is not going to launch as a WoW killer though it will take more subs away than AOC and keep them. But after a year of content patches it wouldn't surprise me if there was a 50/50 split of subscribers between warhammer and WoW. (5 mil a piece).
Of course I pulled that number out of my ass but to summerize, War is and will be good enough to pull in big numbers and keep them.

I agree with this and it may be due to the fact that Mythic themselves said they wanted to make a game and NOT a world (trying to find the quote where they said this). This is definitely not the sandbox that SWG was and it's clear that the focus is more on "things to do" than "make your own content". Marketing speak? Perhaps but at least these guys aren't hyping up stuff like some other developer we know. Well, that English guy at Mythic does hype a lot, I'll have to admit.

Mythic has announced they are planning to have Roleplay (RP) ruleset servers. With this in mind, I really hope they flesh out the world. We need emotes, clothes, and lots of "flavor" items. WoW actually does a pretty good job of this, and I think any game that intends to compete with WoW has to try to create a world, as well as just a "game". Sure, there should be important conflicts and whatnot and certain areas should feel like they are in eminent danger.

Others however, say - in capital cities, should have moments of respite. Parks, flavor NPCs, places to buy smoking and drinking gear, taverns, tailors etc... Including these gives the game world even more immersion when the enemy faction is sieging your city, and suddenly the tavern you have your guild meetings at is on fire! "To Arms my brothers! The wine is lost, but the day is not!" :D

I'll comb through the thread for unanswered questions tomorrow, but for now check out my site at http://www.trizzeo.com for a nice Witch Hunter video (rank 40 gameplay) as well as a HUGE number of in-depth articles + full ability lists to peruse :).

Hey GoldenTiger. I've had that site bookmarked for a few days, since I saw it on warhammeralliance. I just wanted to extend a note of thanks for the work you've put in. I'm enjoying reading some of the articles.

I've only played some of the starting zone as I had more pressing matters last night, but ....I'm really not impressed. The game not only looks like it's 10 years old, it FEELS like it's 10 years old. Movements still aren't fluid, animations are a let-down, and enemies rarely attack you unless you are face to face with them. Here's to hoping RvR makes the game...

Here's a question about PVP:

How does it work on the core servers? I know some areas you will only be PVP when flagged and then there are instanced scenarios, but are there non-instanced full PVP zones as well?

There are non-instanced PVP areas as well (by crossing into them, you will be flagged after a 10 second warning or any hostile action taking).

In addition to whats been said, in non-pvp areas, if you heal someone flagged, you become flagged as well.

There is also the all-important chicken mechanic. That will make full pvp servers a lot safer than full pvp in WoW. Basically, if you become pvp flagged in a zone below your zone level, you turn into a chicken. That means a level 12 character in tier 1, 22 in tier 2, etc. No level 40s ganking newbie zones in War. This is for full pvp and core rule sets. If you stay unflagged, you can stay in the zone to complete quests or whatever.

I dont think you are going to see this (clothes) in War anytime soon. The RP ruleset is there for chat and name enforcement, and hopefully a more mature player base. That said I think War lends itself to RP since all the classes are easy to get into and the quests and ToK give great background and flavor.

So...if a lvl 12 comes up and hits my lvl 50, my lvl 50 is flagged and turns into a chicken? Wtf? It sounds like they just opened the door to reverse-griefing, imo. *shrug*

They designed it such to keep higher level players in higher level zones. Why would a level 40 (40 is max rank) need to be in lower level zones anyway other than to gank or show off?

To help guildies with quests?

My guild in WoW pretty frequently has 1 high level guy run 4 low level guys through a few random instances. Especially late-night, when there's not much going on, I've found my warlock doing all kinds of low level crap just to help people at and pass the time while we chat on Vent. Of course, I have a policy of "don't start none, won't be none" towards world PvP, but I understand the desire for such a system.

My point is that it's needlessly one-way. If the level disparity is the real problem, why not have level 12s who hit a lvl 40 turn into a jackass or something? :-D

~S

its only in the RvR zones, you can still take your high level and help them out in the PvE zones but you cannot take your high level into a low level RvR zone

That scenario is impossible to happen due to the following example:

Level 40 comes down to Tier 1 (nub zone) to help a guildmate with a quest. An enemy level 11 (12 is too high to be in tier 1 RvR without being chickenfied) comes to your PvE area where neither are flagged for RvR. The enemy level 11 cannot attack anyone in the enemy PvE area unless they are flagged as well. Only way the level 11 can attack an enemy player is either they are both within the RvR section of the zone or the enemy comes into the level 11's PvE area.

Anyone know if the mounts are race specific like in WoW? If so, can you buy other races mounts somehow? Do mounts cost money, or are they free once you get the required level?

If they are race specific, what is the Chaos mount?

Mounts are race-specific, and in the case of the Magus, class-specific. They cost 30 gold currently at Rank 20. You cannot buy the other racial mounts, and I believe there are no plans in the future to implement that.

The Chaos mount is a glowing disc for the Magus to ride on, and a sinister horse for the other classes.

The Greenskin mount is a riding wolf.

The Dark Elf mount is a hunched-over lizard-dinosaur-thing that's pretty wicked looking.

The High Elf mount is a noble white steed.

The Order mount is a normal brown horse.

The Dwarf mount is a mini-gyrocopter jet-pack that hovers them just above the ground, legs dangling as they move.

Awesome, thanks!

Can you help me choose my class, too? I'm a little confused about some classes, the hybrids sound very similar.

I want a hybrid that his main goal in a group is to heal, while doing SOME damage as well to others, and most importantly, can hold his own in 1v1s. Right now I'm leaning towards diciple of khaine, is this right? Hopefully destruction.

You should add class descriptons to your website, I didn't find any, and the class tabs only list abilities, which are somewhat hard to understand for someone that hasn't played WAR before.

And... nevermind :) DoK is indeed my class. A real paladin! http://warhammeronline.wikia.com/wiki/Khaine's_Withdrawal http://warhammeronline.wikia.com/wiki/Focused_Mind also won me over

I'd say a Shaman (for Destruction) is more up your alley, in that case, but they are casters rather than melee'rs. A Disciple does secondary healing, and is far from having a main goal of healing :).

I'll be writing up class descriptions soon, as well as gameplay-style guides. It'll take a few days for it to all be finished, however.

How are the Black Orcs? I'm mainly interested in pvp, so I'm curious how they hold up. I was originally intending to be an Orc Choppa, I usually prefer high damage melee guys. I need to be destruction, as close friend is going Goblin Shaman.

From initial reports, the Black Orc is the highest single-target dps tank while the Chosen does less dps but has a lot more crowd control. I always envisioned the Black Orc as a dirty brawler type with stuns/knockdowns but they gave that to the Chosen. I'm gonna have to rethink my class now, I wanted to be a greenskin :(.

Check out this nice in game trailer made by warhammer alliance. http://media.curse.com/dl2/WHATrailer-1280x800.wmv

That does look really cool...I may change my opinion and actually pick this game a week after release, once the servers or stable or any quick patches done.

As long as there is decent PvE for my Brothers and I to play together with, in like a small 3 man group I will buy it for sure.

Dunno as much as I read about the game. Everything sounds interesting, but that's kinda what MMOs have to do...make new mechanics to setup them apart to draw interest. But I've always found a good month of play and I recognize the MMO baseline everyone kinda builds all MMOs on (EQ-esque). But I haven't found one that makes the grind non-tedious yet....WoW levelling from 1-70 wasn't bad the first time...but I found myself just trying to get through it as quick as possible the next time around with any class I tried.

So I guess the question I have for those of you who've played awhile.... Would you say the grind is invisible for the most (IE, you want to do the stuff in this game vs. doing it to level)? And would you say you could pick another class...even with the same starter zone and the experience would be different enough to be fun?

I noticed they have a lot of different starter zones from the Gamespy journal kept on their experiences, so I like that there's a different place to re-roll and not end up in "The Barrens" doing the same quests you did all over again from then on out. At least this is what I gathered from comments on the game.

Had something else I wanted to ask, but slipped my mind at the moment.....Ill add it back here if there aren't posts following this when it comes to me.

Got it, as a player what about the game stands out the most to you? Especially pertaining to the classes you've tried? Do they feel fleshed out, and do they feel unique?

Veterator, I have to say that WAR has impressed me in that regard. While yes, the same MMO baselines exist and cannot be "designed out" or anything, they've done a good job on making it more fun.

I don't want to come off as repeatedly "plugging" my site, but I wrote an article EXACTLY on what you're asking here: http://trizzeo.com/index.php/trizze...rios_and_pve_how_they_make_leveling_more_fun/ that you should find clarifying :).

I'll also post the FAQ answer I wrote about your last question:

Quick Answers FAQ on trizzeo.com said:
What is something you like about WAR that isn’t well-known yet?

The one thing I like most about WAR that’s not yet known by many is that there are many hidden quests that are just out in the middle of nothing as you’re fighting along/exploring to find, some of which lead into chains of quests. You’re rewarded for exploring and there are of course the Plungers of the World hidden in hard-to-reach areas, as well as monster Lairs with powerful monsters for their area. The lore of the game is rich and it shows that with the quest texts and gameplay.

I'll add that I really like how the classes don't have a ton of overlap, i.e. they're more like DAOC in that they are all fairly unique and accomplish things different ways even in the same archetype.

heh, yeah I was wondering if you're making money off the site somehow with all the links. But your site is one person's view, and you don't have comment capability on your articles. I got a friend who every time he's in an MMO he swears up and down at how good it is, then he just fizzles out and it's like the "I like this" switch gets flipped to Off and I hear nothing but bad from then on. So I like being able to see other people's comments on subjects as it gives a lot better baseline to go from.

From the Gamespy journal, they had 4-5 people playing and they all commented on things. I really liked the format of how they went about doing it, building on each others comments for the day. It just didn't have a lot of info overall, but it did give a good feeling about each person in a way you could figure out who had similar interests about the MMO genre.

I will however someday manage to get through all your articles, but I always feel like Im skipping something when I go to your site.

As far as money goes, I have no ads on there, and don't get any benefit from people visiting it. It's there solely as a resource :). On the ability lists, you'll notice there is a link to Warheap: that is there as a thank-you for them providing the lists to me for use on the site, and for one of the admins of that site noting some things for me pre-NDA drop that I could improve with my site that helped me to get it in a better state.

On commenting, I actually do have a commenting setup I am going to implement, I wasn't planning on it immediately, however, with your post you've convinced me it's something that should be on sooner rather than later. I want to fiddle with the format of it, the CAPTCHA (in place of registration), and how to make the fact that it's there more apparrent as most of my articles are relatively long, so they don't get buried beneath my own info.

Thanks for the feedback!

Dang, those are some excellent shots. Fires of Heaven's been around awhile, good to see they're still there :)!

Yeah I haven't really decided how to approach your site yet GoldenTiger. I read a little and then feel like I need to find out more about something in particular for it to make sense. I usually like to go oldest to newest updated stuff, so I don't have to re-read things to see what was modified. Since everything on your site kind of went up at once it's kinda hard to tell what's still "cooking" on there.

The link below has some AMAZING screenshots. They start on page 4 and go on for a few pages. Just scroll down and you'll see them.

http://www.fohguild.org/forums/mmor...r-nda-officially-lifted-post-pics-info-4.html

Just to note, those screens have been altered. The guy that took them added bloom and did a few other minor tweaks to the screenshots. He said so himself on the beta forums a while back. Currently the game doesn't have bloom and he was able to get AA/AF by forcing it through the nvidia control panel (it doesn't work for ATI cards at the moment) since it's not a selectable option yet in game.

The screens do look nice, but just wanted to let people know that they have been altered and doctored up slightly.

The next Great MMO will be LINEAGE 3.... but thats not till 2010 ....sigh

Great to Korea maybe but the Lineage series has never been all that popular in the West due to it's ridiculous grind mechanics. Personally I can die happy without ever playing a Lineage game ever again. Definite pass for me.

Do you still get the pre order benefits if you pre-order just a regular copy rather than a CE?

I want to preorder online and receive an actual box (so not D2D) but can't find anywhere in the UK that gurantees the early access benefits, any ideas?
