Warhammer Online Thread!

Cannot wait to hear some beta testers impressions once the NDA is lifted.

I'll answer any questions with as little bias as I can provide.

This game was never billed as a WoW-killer even if mass populous seems to think that. I have no idea why people always think each new MMO has to "kill" the one before it. Although most people wouldn't, it is possible to play multiple games at once.

If anyone wants, feel free to download a video I made near the beginning of beta 3. The combat was a lot different then but you'll have a better sense on what the graphics look like at least.

Video is here: http://www.filefactory.com/file/7894c8/n/xxywnn_rar ~ 280MB

Awesome!! I knew I downloaded 10gbs for a reason! I was selected to be in the WAR preview which happens from the 22nd to the 25th.

Can't wait.

You had to download/register for the fileplanet pre-load. Once you do that just check your account at mythic and it will show you all the things your account has. If it shows preview then you are in.

Because currently I ran the 3.1 beta in July at 2560x1600rez highest settings, which there really was no settings, but I think I just had the one option of High or something ? Anyways...the game looked no better than WoW a 5yr old game engine, it actually looked worse, and I know the beta had toned down graphics missing tons of options, but I want to see if they were using some alpha engine just for testing because game looked crap. I expect a game coming out 4 years after WoW to look night and day better than WoW.

Look at EverQuest1 released in 1999, and EverQuest2 released in 2004...in those 5 years the newer game looked a million times better, night and day difference, but I don't see that same difference between WoW and WAR which are 4 years apart.

Ok seriously, stop this drivel. First off WAR is not WoW 2.0. Secondly EQ and EQ2 are different games within the same genre as WAR.

WAR is a RvR game based on sieges and open realm massive warfare. How well does AoC run with 20 vs 20 or 48 vs 48? I'll tell you. It runs like horse shite.

If WAR has the exact same engine as WoW or even DAoC for that matter and able to pull off massive RvR sieges and warfare with a pretty smooth frame rate I'll give it two thumbs up.

So please for the love of all that is holy, stop posting the same damn thing over and over.

Fileplanet keeps on timing out for me :( I can't get to downloading

# Download the open beta client from Fileplanet.com. You will be required to create a free FilePlanet account and input your open beta code to access the file.

Wow, more fail, especially since you can't even get to the link right now. I am not trying to keep bitching, however I feel this whole process was misleading to people.

Yeah I hate fileplanet as well... what's the point of having to download it through FP? Can't they just host it on their own server? Or use bittorrent like they're using for the closed beta?

Is fileplanet paying them to have it hosted on their servers?

Whats your obsession with the graphics of this game? Yes it will look better in retail but its not "night and day"

if this video looks anything like WoW I must be blind
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GT77Awyb4DQ

and wotlk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w63c36MLYgU

The textures are more high res and the lighting is 100x better and the grass, foliage etc. Is it vastly superior to wow like aoc? no but will it run on any pc unlike aoc? yes, so why complain about that?

Pretty sure that second video is Zangarmarsh......which is Burning Crusades.

In fact it looks like all of it was shot in Zangar... Are they claiming the new graphics will affect pre-existing content? Don't that think BC did that.

woo! i got into preview as well... now if i can only get this dang thing downloaded... keep getting an error on the "file reserve" screen.. bah

What does RvR = Realm vs Realm really mean ? Is it like two Realms going against each other

So that would be like WoW having two totally different servers fighting each other ?? If so that is epic

Uh no.
RvR = Order vs Destruction

Realm 1 >> Order >> Consists of: Dwarf, Empire (Humans), and High Elves
Realm 2 >> Destruction >> Consists of: Greenskins (Orcs/Goblins), Chaos, Dark Elves

Each race also has a natural enemy so there is RvR within those too. For instance:

Empire vs Chaos
Dark Elves vs High Elves
Dwarves vs Greenskins

It's a lot more indepth than this so here's a video here explaining some more from Mythic.

Well I got a feeling Im gonna get screwed on this preview weekend. Entered the preorder, supposed to enter one of those wavey images codes, but it's all "Invalid code".....and it's not updating no matter what I do. So either they are out or just dont like me.

How many people does each server hold for WAR ?? Like in WoW each server can handle like 15,000 or even some up to 20,000 players on one server

Plus how many servers total, will there be dozens ?

There is a beta, and I am in it. (This is all we're technically allowed to say). Collector's Edition preorders are in the Closed Beta now.

It is awesome. Trust me guys, this is the one we've been waiting for. I can't say why, but I think you'll be very very happy.

Will it kill WoW? Probably not. However, it does have something that so many games have lacked recently- polish.

*coughcoughrunswellonlowerendpcstoocoughcough*

Oh excuse me. Must have had something in my throat.

That video makes the game look way too confusing with a million players on the screen.

When I played beta 3.1 I just did small group quests and it was pretty fun I have to admit. But if the main deal with the game will be to have a zillion players fighting each other like your video then I will pass for sure, that looks like a mess

I got the client to start downloading without issue. I also appear to be in the preview weekend, but that is most likely due to being one of the first 50,000 SE people to enter their code back on Friday.

That was a city siege and it was the first time we did it. No one had a clue on what to do so it ended up like a massive zerg. Just saying... :)

I entered my code today and I got in. 50,000 people is a lot for a simple stress test.

If that's how it will be then you will be the minority. There will be a mass exodus of Arena burnt out PvPers ready and waiting.

Then they can leave...I have been playing WoW since November 2004, and never once stepped inside a BG, or PvP arena, and don't plan to either. I like to quest with my Brothers and Guildies, and just got lost inside a huge open ended game world, just exploring new areas together, and questing away.

Well I'm hoping that by the time you respond to this the NDA will be down and you can answer the question.

Why are all the names on the screen like Captain, Sea Guard, etc? Is that a PVP rank or does it hide the names of players so people can't send you annoying tells on their alts?

I was lead to believe that stealthers didn't exist in the game, yet you looked like you were stealthed at the beginning and in the middle there at some point?

And there's one part....not gonna bother looking up a timecode since it's kinda small. But an orc(?) seemingly appears out of nowhere then dies....lag or was he stealthed?

And, your video has like a full minute of black at the end of that for me..music with no video.

Graphics remind me a bit of LOTRO, but I haven't seen that game in so long can't say that's completely true. Graphics don't bug me too much, if I can tell what someone is by looking at em..that's pretty much good enough. I do like armor to visibly change my appearance (different models, not just colors), and to increase in looks (intricacy or style) as I progress.

MMOs don't translate well into videos in terms of gameplay, it always looks really boring when you're just watching instead of button mashing.

I believe the NDA drops later today, then us beta testers can talk!

TALK NOW THEN. why wait a couple of hours. just tell us your down to earth honest opinions in which looks like a shit wow clone game with next to no PVE action at all

I had player names turned off (it was a leaked vid after all :D) but what IS shown is the PVP rank

Stealth works completely different in this game. It's in the game but only lasts until you run out of action points, which is about 30 seconds.

And there's one part....not gonna bother looking up a timecode since it's kinda small. But an orc(?) seemingly appears out of nowhere then dies....lag or was he stealthed?
Probably lag. I won't lie, it was very laggy during that test. Mythic had just bumped up the number of people to 100 vs 100 and was testing it out. I was surprised it ran as good as it did despite the lag.

And, your video has like a full minute of black at the end of that for me..music with no video.

Yeah I forgot to trim the audio down. Oops.

I won't lie here either. LOTRO looks a lot better than this game especially with the DX10 features and ultra high res textures. WAR doesn't have any of that currently and Mythic hasn't said anything other than "there will be some more graphical goodies". The graphics probably won't get that much better but with forced AA and AF, the game doesn't look that bad at the moment. We're running on medium quality apparently so we have to wait and see still.

MMOs don't translate well into videos in terms of gameplay, it always looks really boring when you're just watching instead of button mashing.

Agreed. No matter the game, MMO vids always look damn boring.

fuck the NDA tell us if this game is shit or not!

"Shit" varies from person to person. I personally find Age of Conan and WoW to both be shit. See also Crysis, Counter-Strike.. I can go on but who cares? Point is, people like different stuff. We all know this though right?

TALK NOW THEN. why wait a couple of hours. just tell us your down to earth honest opinions in which looks like a shit wow clone game with next to no PVE action at all

I've said multiple times in this thread that you can level to max rank in WAR without ever fighting another person. PVE is plenty. Of course, I'd probably pass on this game if I were you. RvR with a group of your buddies is just as fun as PvE is to me and the AI is much more challenging with real people.

I'm not going to tattle Frostex, I'm just asking. I checked Frosteh's old posts and didn't see a good reason for him to be banned.

Dont know who that is.

Thanks for the link, that looks great fun, I hope these are the sort of numbers we can expect to see in one area fighting each other and possibly more!

I agree with this strongly, I think the graphics are probably not much better than WoW's but to me that doesn't matter, what matters is that RvR works and we can have large scale fights, for that everyone needs to be able to play and I understand that not everyone has multiple GPU set ups.

AoC proved quite nicely that an MMO that looks as good as it does can't have large PvP battles, they first boasted as high as 300vs300 and then they capped at 48x48 on release and even that isn't playable. In order to have large scale battles you need simple graphics to allow it to be playable, see planetside, which in it's day was awesome fun, but looks pretty poor.

That video makes the game look way too confusing with a million players on the screen.

I think the idea is that you can do what you wish, the RvR zones are seperate and you don't need to enter them to reach any particular place in the world, so you're not forced into RvR at all, there's enough quests to do on your own (supposedly) to level 1-60 without the need of other people. On top of that theres the group quests and public quests to allow you a varying scale of battles.

I had several people playing AoC be a bit like that, they chuntered at the thought of "having" to do group quests because they wanted to do everything on their own, which sort of begs the question, why are they playing an MMO?

I entered my code today and I got in. 50,000 people is a lot for a simple stress test.

did you get an email about this? I pre-ordered the SE and registered pretty early and in my account it says "preview weekend" as one of the items, so I assume that means I am in it.

No, I also bought the CE version. The stress test was the end of closed beta. They invited about 60,000 more people. The invites went out last week.

I got into the closed beta. You should've gotten an email about it as they invited all CE preorders IIRC.

I am referring to the preview weekend not the closed beta. only CE people get closed beta invites. They said that the first 50,000 standard edition pre-orders that register will be invited to the preview weekend, which apparently is this weekend. So I did not receive an email yet but "preview weekend" is showing up in my account, so maybe they just haven't sent the email.

Well from what I understand from reading their site and various other forums, the open beta will not start until the 7th, and the bonus time starts the friday before the game launches or something like that. At any rate, if you got the pre-order, you can download the client now, but you cannot log in or play the game until the 7th...

Woops, they just posted this:

Over 100,000 people are preparing to descend into the Age of Reckoning, we have invited the vanguard host to join us this weekend (August 22-25) to an exclusive Preview Weekend event!

Attendance is by invitation only and is guaranteed to all Closed Beta participants, Collectors Edition Pre-Order customers, and the first lucky 50,000 Standard Edition Pre-Order customers to register their accounts in the new Mythic Account Center.

Invites have already started to go out, check your Account Center for either Closed Beta or Preview Weekend, all guests will also be notified via email.

This weekend will be an exciting chance for many to see Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning for the first time. We can't wait to welcome you!

See you on the battlefield,
- The Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning Team

I have come up with another question reading some of the comments. Group quests, public quests, RvR...group related stuff. It relies on other people to be constantly making new characters, or having low level chars....so have you run into the problem yet where there is no one to do these things with and what did you do? Play another guy, do something else?

See everyone talking about ghost towns in WoW with it's third expansion coming out, and remember EQ being very barren in older zones. If group play were required with them, you'd be stuck....and Im kinda an alt-aholic which most games nowadays counter with "HA HA you can only make 5 characters total unless you pay us more money!"

This is a problem with all MMOs, not just WoW or WAR. These games are designed to make players "stronger" the more they play. Expansions are released based on how they population is evolving, whether this is by levels or customer feedback. I can't think of any game that has people continuing to play the lower levels unless it's players that are trying out new classes.

That being said, there's still plenty to do solo in WAR but there's just no way to always have people in the low levels to do things like public quests and low level RvR. This will only start to become a problem when the game begins to increase in age and has been out a while.

Yeah I've played a lot of MMOs, and realize the problem. But just a lot of comments seem to be plan on playing in groups at all times.......but I know from experience that it's not going possible for everyone of every second of the day. And I know that these long term irritations won't be present in a 7 day period that's packed with people...or a stress test weekend.

Mythic hasn't been shy about admitting they want people to have more fun grouping in WAR. They've introduced a really easy mechanic that allows anyone to start a group with the Open Party feature.

Basically it allows anyone to join a group that's flagged as open. No need to ask around for groups really since you can just look down the open party list and join one that has what you want to do (Public Quest, RvR, PvE). This won't completely erase the problem of people leaving low level zones but it does make grouping much easier and less frustrating in my opinion.

Some things I love about War;

*Open Questing- Run into a specific area and automatically start the quest with other people. Depending on your damage or healing in the open quest it will determine your influence.

*RvR- Whats not to like about this... Now that you can basically level off the bat from just doing RvR either open field, sieiging, or scenerio it will all give a signifcant amount of xp.

*Siege and siege weapons- Keep siege has been very nice so far, and the city sieges I hear as suppose to be a blast. Siege weapons are very interactive and effective in a battle.

*Massive scale of RvR battles... Over 200 people in 1 area at 1 time all battling it out. So far I have encountered very min. lag in large scale open RvR battles.

*Specing a character- Between the diverse set of abilities and the effectiveness of renown points, moral abilities, and tactics it makes every character very unique on how they want to build. The stats in this game are very powerful as well and make a difference no matter what stat it is for your character. Lets say you are a meele career but have willpower which is a healing career stat. The +willpower will still have some sort of effect on your character because it does other things as well besides increasing healing.

Been a pleasant experience I can see this mmorpg being a big success. I have encountered no major bugs besides the combat bug and very little lag so far.

Also here is a nice database site for everything in WAR.
http://www.wardb.com/

Also, does anyone know if there is/will be a tutorial system like in WoW? That's what helped me get into MMO's in the first place, I always find them confusing as heck
