Warhammer Online Thread!

What about the game engine WAR uses ?

- Does it support DualCore or even QuadCore cpu's, would those make the game run smoother.better or doe not take advantage of those ?

- 4gb system memory, does more memory in this game help, or not really matter too much ?

- nVidia or ATI the better card for the game, which GPU was the game designed better for if at all, like the GTX-280 or 4870 series ?

- Audio ? X-Fi supported or some other format ?

If the game truly looks this good, color me impressed for sure, that does looks really nice.

The screenshots were altered. I explained it a little more on the previous page.

Mythic is using a modified Gamebryo engine for Warhammer Online which appears to be the same engine Bethesda used/is using for Oblivion/Fallout 3.

As far as the other tech questions, it's hard to say since there are a lot of features intentionally left out of the client. We can't really tweak many of the graphical settings and the audio tab only relates to volume control. From what I've seen, ATI/Nvidia cards perform on par based on the generation of the GPU. No word on X-Fi support.

Can a person who doesn't know anything about the Warhammer universe get into the game okay? I'm a total noob as far as War goes but the gameplay looks interesting. Will I be able to get into it and understand what's going on?

All you have to understand is that blizzard stole the ideas for starcraft and warcraft directly from warhammer. So if you can relate to blizzard you can relate to warhammer.

I knew absolutely nothing about Warhammer but I'm enjoying the game quite a bit at the moment. The Tome of Knowledge in game actually does a good job of explaining a lot of the lore the franchise has had over the years.

Do you still get the pre order benefits if you pre-order just a regular copy rather than a CE?

I want to preorder online and receive an actual box (so not D2D) but can't find anywhere in the UK that gurantees the early access benefits, any ideas?

I applied my pre-order codes 2-3 days ago and didn't get into the preview weekend. Just the ingame items, open beta and one other silly thing

i just saw a 3min trailer in mtv. wow it looks amazing. a shame the game wont look even half has good as that and i know todays hardware could handle somthing near identical

Wow, I was on the fence a few pages back, this fact is pure win. I'll be placing my order now. Here's hoping for a great launch!

Do you have a source for that? Unless Mythic is holding something back, the engine feels/looks VERY dated.

Source was Wikipedia and this link. For the record, Dark Age of Camelot also used the same engine, albeit an older version.

The guy who took those screenshots was posting in a thread on WHA. He uses an 8800GTS 512mb and plays on 1920x1200 with max AA/AF and has little to no slowdown in heavy battles. Must be a really stripped-down or modified Oblivion engine.

AA/AF is forced since it's not an in-game option yet. Nor is bloom.

Not so sure why people are hung up on the graphics. It's an MMO, it's not supposed to be that graphically intensive especially for the fact that there will be large-scale RvR battles. Have any of you tried playing AoC on high settings with 25+ people on the screen casting/fighting, etc? Good luck getting a good gameplay experience out of that. Daoc looked good when it came out but it wasnt the best looking game out there. Apparently the graphics in WAR are pretty good from what people have seen, but a lot of features have been left out, so we haven't seen the finished product yet. I would rather have good gameplay in an mmorpg than shitty gameplay and good graphics.

Gamebryo isn't like UE3 where all games built with it use the same pre-made shaders and look alike. It's more of a world building toolset than a renderer, you can swap that out for your own if you like. Bethesda licensed that tech ages ago and have been using it since Morrowind, it's probably been so modified by now that it barely resembles the vanilla engine. Besides, mmo's have to run on laptops which means low poly assets and simple shaders, just because Mythic used the same tools Bethesda licensed (and most likely heavily modified) years ago doesn't mean WAR will look anything like Oblivion or Fallout 3.

MMOs have to run on laptops? Mythic's required system specs have no mention of any laptop GPU including the two most popular ones, the Intel GMA950 (it's weak anyway) and the Intel X3100. Not saying that the game won't run on laptop GPUs but it doesn't look like Mythic is going out of their way to support those.

well they don't have to but it doesn't hurt if the game runs well on most laptops, a large number of which have discrete gpus even if they are weak. Many people I talked to in WoW play that game on a laptop, it definitely helps getting more subscribers. There was an interview with a WAR dev a while back where he says that they went low poly intentionally to maximize the number of PCs that can run the game, including laptops. More laptops than desktops are being sold now, if I were making an MMO I would damn well make sure it can run on a ~2ghz mobile cpu and entry level mobile gpu. Just because the announced specs don't mention mobile GPUs doesn't mean one can't extrapolate the mobile GPU equivalent of the desktop GPUs they listed, for example 8800M has 64 shader units so it's roughly equal to desktop 9600 minus the clock difference.

Who says MMORPG's are supposed to look like crap ? This is 2008 with GTX-280's and 4807x2's...they can handle some pretty demanding game engines now.

And of course most people don't run those high end cards I know, but damn, even a 9600GT budget card is pretty powerful card capable of good frames on brand new games. My point is even $150 or $99 VideoCards are pretty bad ass today, they are equal to what the 7800GTX's and 1800XT's were top of the line a few years ago. Todays budget computers still pack a good punch compared to cheap computers from 4 years ago at WoW release.

So I think the time has come for first, good quality gameplay PLUS a pretty good looking game too, we should be able to have both a great game, and awesome graphics. But those screen shots someone took with full AA/AF make the game look really nice and sharp, I am impressed. Will full retail have those options to really max this game out ??

Yes, it will have the options (or at least, they said they will) for launch. Bloom isn't an option that's been talked about, but AA/AF should be in-game without driver forcing.

For a comparison of what undoctored shots look like, go to the bottom of this article, I have 5 nice-looking shots of what WAR can put out graphically:

What does it take to run WAR?

My favorite one is the last one (the Temple of Sigmar) :).

Man I cant wait till the final game client is released... amazing graphics not to mention the gameplay blows away WoW.

Ravenous squigs kinda look like turkey dinners on legs with a slight tail, at least from that angle. I thought it was something the bolt was doing to em at first, heh.

Here is another favorite screenshot of mine. I am laughing at all those WoW tards that were saying WoW had much better graphics then WAR.

Very nice! Even better once it's released with all the graphics options and no more low textures being forced ;):D:cool:

WoW is almost a 5yr old game engine already  Look at EverQuest1 and 5 years later EverQuest2, that is light years ahead of each other in graphics. WoW and WAR are for sure not that far apart like EQ1 and EQ2 were. So yes WAR has nice graphics but not mind blowing ahead of WoW just a little better

Warhammer is coming out after Crysis, therefore it should look better than Crysis. But it doesn't, therefore I will never play it.

Sounds to me like you won't be playing any other games except Crysis Warhead to me for the next 1-2 years then

BTW what's the most popular WAR forum?

The graphics are not just marginally better try a lot better... WAR uses a enhanced oblivion engine. There is more potential for improvements in the graphics as well.

I think I'm down. I've been lurking around the Fists of Heaven forums (I think someone alluded to the forced AA/AF screenshots from there earlier in this thread) and I think their impulse to go with Order may be correct.

It seems like a LOT of people are going Chaos, so I'd like to flip the script a bit and be an "underdog". Although, to be honest... when I joined WoW the Horde ruled on my battlegroup. The Alliance was a joke. And then...well...time passed. Our guys got stupid, and lazy (or left the game!), and they got new some good players/guilds going. Horde has been eating pavement for quite some time now, last time I checked. Horde is pretty soft-core from roughly the launch of BC.

I blame the Blood Elves! (kidding!)

Anywho, while the Order does look a bit boring, I think the Witch Hunter, Engineer, fire mage and that paladin-type guy are enough to keep me quite busy for some time to come. I should see y'all in there after week one. ;)

Im going order as well... Im narrowing down my classes to the healers since they are a must for a group to survive. I am either going runepriest or archmage.

Preview weekend is almost here! :D

I was originally planning to go Destruction/healer(probably shaman) but I will probably go with Order/rune priest now unless if the population of players changes during retail.

So many people planning to play Order due to the current beta choices... wouldn't be surprised if Order ends up with the big numbers when it's all said and done. I'll base my decisions on what to do when I find out how they are handling character slots. WoW does it per server, can't be the opposite side on the same server on PVP. But newer MMOs are starting to where in the last few days they switch from per server to per account, kinda limits alt-aholics like myself.

Anyone seen any specific times on the server to come up yet? Herald says morning of 22nd, all I've seen.

Dude, shut up already. Take your WoW fanboyism elsewhere. You've said the same thing in every single one of your posts in this thread. WoW and WAR are different games. Please get that through your head.

P.S. The WoW engine is constantly being updated. It's not a "5yr old game engine." When WoW came out, they could have had graphics like EQ2, but they obviously didn't go for realism. It's called an art style. I'm sure the WoW game engine can support much better models too.
