Skyrim Modding Megathread

Tweakguides.com's guide for this game has been up and down a million times since Geforce can't get their act together on it for whatever reason.

^^ That's where it's supposed to be. Right now I can see it. In an hour it could be gone again.

Someone on the Bethesda forums backed it up as a PDF file in case it goes down again.

Here's a gem that everyone can add to their .ini file right now that basically creates a game map that actually looks good and is actually useful vs the default. When you see what this does you'll wonder why in the hell it wasn't set like this in the first place and how you got along without it.

This the .ini file in your My Games folder. Add this segment at the bottom and prepare to be astonished at the much better in game map this creates for you:

[MapMenu]
uLockedObjectMapLOD=8
uLockedTerrainLOD=8
fMapWorldMaxHeight=150000.0000
fMapWorldMinHeight=1500.0000
fMapWorldZoomSpeed=0.0800
sMapCloudNIF=0

The [MapMenu] section and the variables above must be added to the bottom of Skyrim.ini. The first two variables control the level of detail of the game world as seen in Map view, and the values shown make the map more detailed. The second two variables allow you to zoom in much closer and out much further than normally possible. The final variable slows down the zoom speed so you have finer control when zooming in or out of the more detailed map. If you want to remove the clouds from the map, you can also add the sMapCloudNIF=0 variable to the section above to disable them.

Amazing difference. I think those are the max settings that he already put in.

It's a nice guide overall.

HD retex mod - before & after pics are sick

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2146

I hope to god my card supports this.

Last night i downloaded and installed every single texture pack i could find (save for overlaps, of course).

So far i don't see any reduction in FPS on my gtx460 1gb... and it does look incredible.

...though there are times where the edges of one great texture looks awful against the edge of a shit texture... but this will get better with time as more textures are fixed.

The one weird thing i've noticed, is that the ground reflects way too much light... i didn't notice it before i installed the quoted mod.

edit: a quick google lead me to a thread on the new HDR implemented with the "SKYRIM ENHANCED SHADERS" mod... i'll bet that's the culprit.

Ooh more good news: in the new version of the ENB mod, they'll be completely removing that weird contrast changing effect, when you change your view from dark to light.

I downloaded it to try it out and can't seem to get the textures to load. Are the install instructions not complete?

Make sure you put the "textures" folder into your "data" folder; the instructions are correct.

Personally, I package my mods so that users need only extract it to your skyrim root folder, it's easier than messing around in the "data" folder.

As for the actual HD mod, they look fantastic up close. However they're so detailed that at a distance or at an angle, they just look like a mess of color.. it actually looks lower res than the vanilla.

Yeah, I did that, still get the normal textures in game. Odd.

Hmm. I tried putting those settings in Skyrim.ini, and my game wouldn't load - hangs at the loading screen after selecting continue game.

HD retex mod - before & after pics are sick

Here's what I was talking about. Here are my screenshots:

Before: http://static.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/images/2146-1-1323228335.jpg

After: http://static.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/images/2146-2-1323228336.jpg

In both, look at the distant ground texture and compare. In "HD" textures are very high resolution and there's very little negative space, so the distant textures look soupy relative to their vanilla counterparts. I think the vanilla texture does a better job of complementing the height map, rather than drawing attention to an obviously artificial environment.

I have to say using the right combo of mods, this could easily be the best looking game ever imo.

If you had flipped the Before and After, I would actually think "Before" was the high-res textures.

Yeah... the only thing that appears to change is the grass, and it looks worse in the after pic. :confused:

Can you find a better host for this? The image looks odd, and I can't tell if its because its had too much sharpness applied, or if its just bad compression from imgur.

Hmmm, I have to agree. I like the look of the original better in this comparison. The distant textures just look too fine to me.

:eek:

Must give mod list

Pretty typical I think. These are what I'm using that can really be seen here. Also using some other armor and weapon textures that really aren't shown in the picture. The Injector really does great things.

FXAA Post Process Injector
Serious HD Retexture Landscape Skyrim
Vurts Skyrim Flora Overhaul

Yea i was thinking the same thing, but i have a feeling it has more to do with the pictures than anything else. Or maybe they are actually swapped.

Even the close grass looks better in the "before" pic, which is definitely not my experience with these texture mods.

Doubtful, considering that having a 4gb aware exe is as simple as using the process we're used to already. The only difference now is that it will come FROM beth with that tweak.

Pretty much what I was thinking. There's no wrong way to do this. Since Bethesda fixing the exe will mean I can launch through Steam again, it should be an improvement.

Yep, that was the problem I was having earlier in the thread. I took some screenshots to compare and while I admit staring at them up-close, they look amazing, from afar they actually look a lot worse. There most be more to texturing than just getting everything high-res.

Yeah, it's just setting one flag in the .exe to have LAA on. Not really any way you could fuck it up unless you simply forgot to set it. :p

I don't think you can summon a flying familiar or anything flying right?
Or buy a animal companion hawk?

That could make a cool mod, being able to summon a hawk or some flying creature. Or at least tell your summon who to attack even if they are peaceful towards you.

I just installed the 2048x2048 HD Texture Pack, and now my game tries to load for a ridiculous amount of time and then the game just crashes. Just an FYI. I'm going to try using the 1024x1024 version instead.

weird... you machine stomps mine, and i have the big one installed... i have a feeling that's not the problem...

Try it yourself.

I've done my share of retextures, so I can say it definitely has to do with the amount of negative space these texture artists use. If you clutter up the details you'll end up losing detail to anistropy at most perspectives. At a close-up glance, the HD textures blow the vanilla textures away. But in actual gameplay, you're mostly seeing the textures at eye-level at a steep angle/perspective (i.e. not straight down). If they spaced out the details a bit more, it wouldn't turn into the soup we see in the "after" picture I posted.

This is the worst one: http://static.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/images/2146-3-1323001278.jpg

At a distance, all those leaves would make the floor look yellow/orange. Nothing realistic or HD about that.

weird... you machine stomps mine, and i have the big one installed... i have a feeling that's not the problem...

Perhaps not. I got rid of it and also the Icons mod (which I did at the same time) and now the game just hangs at the loading screen forever, and says "Not Responding" when I Ctrl-Alt-Del. Ugggghh. :mad: Same shit happened with Oblivion...all of a sudden nothing works for no apparent reason.

I tried the 1024 version too, same issue. I think something about either one of those mods fucked something up somewhere. No idea what, though.

Have you tried others saves? Sometimes one or two of my saves just stay at the loading screen so I have to reload another save.
