Skyrim Modding Megathread

There is/was a stickied thread in the Bethesda forums asking "what do you want in the patch", however knowing how Bethesda historically works, they will release a patch in about 3 months that may fix a few internal bugs and then maybe one more after that in about a year. Otherwise I agree they are likely waiting on the community to correct the issues.

But who knows, maybe they will surprise us and give us a huge patch when they release the Creation Kit.

I recommend the Better Performance Mod, it really does work. Seems to be under review in skyrimnexus.com now but you can get it from fileplanet.

Does it make the game look noticeably worse though?

Does this cause a loss of quality? I don't get how replacing 1 file can increase performance.

edit: ^^ beaten

I'm really hoping that this mod optimizes code, rather than turning down settings... hard to tell though, because it's under review...

It's a d3d9.dll file you overwrite in the Skyrim base folder. Only thing I notice going to worse is that it disabled my FXAA post processing mod, which I think was also a d3d9.dll file. I really liked the high contrast with that one.

seems like there are a lot of mods coming out which use that file.. and as a result, we have to pick the one we like best hah!

I enjoy the sharpening mod, which uses that file as well... so i'll try it after work, and if it does increase my FPS by a decent amount, i guess i'll have to ditch the AA/Sharpening mod.

edit: here's the link to it, will update after i try it. http://www.fileplanet.com/223433/22...-Skyrim---Skyrim-Better-Performance-Mod-v1.1a

Im curious because I have like three mods that use a dx9.dll. Does that mean these mods wont stack on each other? Specifically the fxaa injector and sharpening mod are very similar, but also both have their own dx9.dll file. I also use a framarate capper because when im in doors the y axis goes crazy on my mouse with the high framerate.

Waiting for a near DOF and a distant LOD mod, anybody knows of anything that might be in the works please post! Loved the DOF mod from Oblivion, can't remember the mod's name.

Yes, this was my experience with it. I also wanted to use the FPS limiter so that my y-axis doesn't go nuts when i'm indoors, but i ended up wanting the AA/Sharpening mod instead.

Wanting to remove the blur took precedence to dealing with a slightly wonky mouse indoors.

I'm waiting for something that will make the outside shadows not look like poop.

Also, has anyone else noticed that sometimes when you hold your bow/weapon/whatever against a light source, you get a weird grey/dark haze around it? I assume it's due to some sort of post-processing filter but it's really annoying and REALLY noticeable depending on the situation (especially against a white background like in the snowy regions)

Nah, my question is, if that tweak truly makes the game utilize more memory, why is it listed under the "low end system" tweaks? Shouldn't that help with any system?

By the way, I tried this memory tweak and haven't noticed a performance difference at all. However, I do notice that sometimes when I exit an "indoor" place to the outside, I will get really low FPS (5-10) and massive stutter for about 5-10 seconds now, before returning to normal FPS. Not certain if it's that tweak that caused it or not, but I never saw it do this before. I will disable it and report back.

Anyway to fix the microstutter that I am experiencing with the FXAA post process injector? It's noticeably gone when disabled but there when it's on. FPS does not change.

Any way to slow leveling way down? I've been playing 10 hours according to steam and I'm level 11 already.

10 hours and you're upset about level 11?
The game has 80 levels, right (100 max all skills)? I'm somewhere around 30-40 hours and I'm level 26. At this rate it will take me hundreds of hours to reach 80... It'll never happen.

I'll end up quitting Skyrim before I get to use all my perks.
I actually want a FASTER leveling mod. Say, 3 times faster minimum.

Enemies level up with your character (to a certain extent) so if you use a slower XP mod, you will be acquiring gear faster than your XP is moving, so you'll have to crank up the difficulty.
Otherwise you will find insane gear but you'll be low level.

i didn't find this nor the one on skyrimnexus now helped. My fps DID increase by about 5, but the game felt less smooth.

Also, i never used the compass anyway, so i changed this in the My Games SkryimPrefs.ini:

[Interface]
bShowCompass=0

I installed some code to modify the map scrolling and such, and it ended up removing all the fog of where i'd never been.

Does anyone know what effects this? Removing the code didn't do anything, i even started a new game--and the map was completely visible then too.

Beware of that lol

What fog? Clouds? And do you have a link to the page that has this code?

Anyone seen anything that can give you more hotkeys?

8 just isn't enough, and I'd also love to be able to set a hotkey to a combo of spells (fireball mainhand, ward offhand).

anyone seen anything like that?

Not the clouds that are everywhere, as they had an option to leave them... and it worked, but it now is as if the entire map is explored. There are now no more clouds covering areas i've never been, which is lame.

I am eagerly awaiting something which does this... i probably have 15 spells i want to use on a regular basis, so i have to pause all the time.

I wonder how much room there is for texture improvements before I start to slow down. With only the land and tree shadows tweak, I've peaked at 1464MB of VRAM usage in Skyrim. That's at 1080p maxed out with 8xAA.

Follow-up; since removing that tweak, I haven't gotten that slowdown again. Must have been causing it.

Just got posted, new rock textures look superb, although I didn't hate the originals. New textures are 4096 res.

Of all the things this modder chose to improve, it was the already impressive looking rocks in the game, and all he really did was upscale and sharpen the original add a bit of noise to the diffuse...

The rocks in Skyrim already looked inconsistent with the rest of the world in terms of detail, now this mod makes them just ridiculous.

I think he installed the Killable Kids mod, which somehow allows Children to be displayed on the race selection screen:

Looks like that mod got taken down.... I wonder why????

Yeah, they look good already but the mod makes them better. Personally I'd like to see the generic ground/terrain textures made better first. That seems to be what you see the most of in general.

Yes, the mod makes them better, but truly good artistic design is making sure the detail is consistent, you can have one object that is 16 texels per square-inch that is next to a surface that is <1 texel per square-inch. The human eye picks out the ugly surface and reacts to it more negatively than if all surfaces were the same pixel density.

You're right, I think people should focus on the (relatively) low res terrain textures first.

Problem is I've upgraded almost all of the other textures, so this mod really doesn't stand out in comparison. I second the motion to change ground textures, higher res texture mods reveal just how ugly some of the Skyrim textures are.
