New 360 Revealed

does anyone know who builds the hardware for microsoft?
is it the same company for the old and the new 360? ibm? tmc? tsm?

so I guess the guy in the video along with every other person this has happened to must have an IQ below 80?

although the odds are small, in the REAL world shit can happen especially if you have kids. heck people see something new and they want to look at it. I am sure the last thing going through their mind is that its going to eat the disc from moving it or picking it up. especially since they likely wont even know its running until they touch it.

That is exactly what I'm saying. If you leave your 360 in a place where it can be knocked over, you're not to bright.

It doesn't take much thought to situate things so kids can't reach/can't knock over the 360, unless they are running around and destroying the house.

Put it up high, in a cabinet. Open the doors when playing. OR, put it in a cabinet, right off the floor, and close the doors.

Once again, if the last thing going through someone's mind is scratching a disc while you jostle the unit around, I don't think they are very bright.

I've seen a friend scratch a DVD while moving his DVD player. It can happen to almost anything that is running a disc.

I mean, I guess I could be wrong.

I can't believe Microsoft would seriously be stupid enough to not use a disc drive that wouldnt' scratch games. Sony and Nintendo haven't had issues like this.

Once again, plenty of other devices do this.

THis is just mind blowing to me. Who moves around machines with spinning discs in them? yikes

so lemme get this straight....if you move your 360 while a disk is in it, it gets destroyed? you mean just like the sticker on the front tells you?

you know there is a reason why most laptop drives force you to lock the disk onto the spindle..........

lol common sense would indicate that one should not move a tray loading device when it is spinning a disk inside.

This! x infinity

Who the hell would move any console while the disc is spinning?. Oh and on the subject the PS3 does the same. You don't hear about it much because the ps3 is supposed to be kept horizontal not vertical. But there are people out there who keep it vertical ala PS2 (which incidentally had the same issue).

really? funny that they made feet for it to stand verticle and showcase it on the front of the box standing verticle then don't you think? lol.. i agree, it takes a dumbass to move a console while its got a disc spinning or even inside it for that matter... but to say the ps3 wasn't intended to stand up is another story

Half the power consumption of the original, lower at load than the Jasper revision was at idle.

Just ordered mine at BB for in-store pickup today..

I have an original Elite that has survived but it's loud and eats power so I feel like it's a worthwhile upgrade.

that is why the 360 tray has tabs on it to hold the disk until it is loaded and the magnet clamps it down on the spindle. this is not a strong magnet and does not offer nearly the security of drive that is designed to be moved while in use (laptop drive for example.

MS had a choice

use a slim drive that pops out the whole assemblyexposes the laser to people

or

use a tray loading drive that does not expose the laser to the people.......there is a reason why most drives are tray loading

just picked mine up from best buy. Showed none in stk online. I went anyway and they had 5 in stk. Definitely quieter than my old unit.

the new 360 is blah... if anyone has one is their a major difference between the fat one?

it is slightly quieter. comparing the dimensions on the packaging you wouldnt think there is much of a difference, but when i put them side by side it is definitelysmaller. Now to get a data transfer cable and transfer all 70Gb i have on my 120gb drive over to this.

Do that, or just use a USB stick to copy 16GB at a time for free.. then do a license transfer on xbox.com.

I'm upgrading if nothing else for the 250GB hard, Wireless N, and the warranty refresh.

My buddy is doing the same. I'm sticking with my current Jasper Elite since its working just fine and I'm hardwired to my router. I will likely buy another 360 soon since the wife wants one in the bedroom so she can play her games etc..

the new 360 is blah... if anyone has one is their a major difference between the fat one?

It's been stated a few times now:

More USB ports.
Dedicated power port for Kinetic.
Optical audio port on the console itself.
Apparently runs a lot quieter, cooler and uses less power.
Built in 802.11n Wi-Fi.
250 GB hard drive.
Removal of memory card slots.
Touch sensitive buttons, on the console.
A new design.

Feel free to decide which changes are "major."

Picked mine up today. I really like it. It is so much quieter now. It will actually be practical to use it to watch movies now since it isn't any louder than my PS3.

It is still kind of loud when it spins up a game disk, but with the game installed, the unit goes extremely quiet again after it verifies the game.

With the trade in deals at Gamestop, I was able to get mine for about $135. Not a bad upgrade.

The top fan exhaust on mine gets really really hot. Anyone else have this happen?

Mine does too. But not nearly as hot as the back of my Elite did.

At least you know it's doing it's job just think about the air you high end pc vid cards throw out and then your CPU fan, this is both in one now coming outa your new 360 im sure it will be less than the older 360's now that it's all 45nm

My Gamestop got 4 units in today and 2 of them went to the people working there......I am number 8 on the waiting list and they said it probably be 2 weeks. Oh well, I have a 360 already and will be trading it in to get this one so not that big of a deal.

Only thing that kind of gets me going, if you only got 4 units in, you should put ALL four units on the shelve and not dedicate 2 of them to the staff.

yea i got mine today for 150 after trade ins. i cant even tell its on. the loudest thing is the dvd drive when you play but, once your in the game, you cant tell. the top gets hot too, but id expect that. i mean have you ever felt the back of a ps3 when its been on for 15 minutes? its like touching fire lol. mines about the same as what my ati card puts out when im gaming. having the vent on top though is nice. i was thinking about modding up some really quiet 80mm fans to blow air in the side for extra air flow, but dont even know if i want too

also i love the large hardrive. i can actually install the games without worrying about space. i got lucky. there is a gamestop in a mall near me that had 4 units left. guess no one goes to them cause everywhere was sold out lol

quick question. if i install a game could my room mates also access the game through their gamer tag? or does it have to be mine?

also why does the xbox only recognize two usb drives at a time? me and my 2 roommates were each hoping to have our own flash drive for our gamer tag.

bought one on newegg today along with an hdmi cable... I hope the visual quality on my 1080p computer monitor is a big improvement.

Yeah the best buy i bought mine had was trying to put all of the geek squad crap on it and i said whoa, i dont want that shit. just give me the xbox

Don't expect the 1080p monitor to improve the visual quality of the Xbox. Most games run at 720p or less.

lol wut?

having the xbox do the scaling is better than having the monitor do it.

I wouldn't be concerned with the scaling as much as I would the quality of the monitor. 1080p or not.

Budget 720p plasma over a 1080p monitor any day.

I have seen too many people think a higher resolution monitor will get rid off the jaggies and suddenly make the games look better. It is better to let the Xbox do the scaling, but don't be too disappointed when you are still seeing jagged lines and texture shimmering, that will not change.

It's not the jaggies that I wish to have the cable fix, it's the color that I want improved. I've been using VGA instead of HDMI and to me the color looks a little dull even with tweaked monitor settings.

Cool, my bad- you will notice a difference. When I switched from vga to hdmi the image was sharper and the colors were better with hdmi. You may also notice better response times after going from vga to hdmi. Good luck. I really enjoy my 360, almost to the point I prefer it to the PC now.

so how exactly do you let the xbox do the scaling and not the monitor?

This might have been asked but i was curious, for everyone that owns one of the new 360's...have you had any issues? Whether it be noise or the DVD drive or anything. I read one Engadget that theirs (though they said it might have been just theirs) was noisy.
I ask not to start issues but im truely curious because i plan on getting one.

BTW will the overall cost be the same if you buy a Slim 360 now and "Kinect" when it comes out...compared to waiting until they release a "Slim 360 Kinect bundle"? Or do they typically make the bundle cheaper? OR do they add a game to the bundle for free to entice people to get it (and typically the game sucks)?

yea i saw the engadget thing and i completely disagree. just listening to it there is a 100% difference. my room mate kept saying "but Engadget says its the same volume". he wasn't using his ears but believing the review because they had a decibel meter (one explination to why the decible meter might have shown the same level but it doesnt sound the same is cause the new drive emits a sound at a lower hertz than the old one. lower sounds sound quieter even if they are equal in decible level to something that is of a higher hertz). im not over exaggerating when i say it is dead quiet. when your on the dashboard, there is no sound at all. if i had my eyes closed i would guess that it was off. the xbox is situated about 12 feet away from me on an open entertainment stand. the dvd drive is louder than the fan but not by much. you can only hear it spinning up before the game starts, because once the game volume comes in, the xbox is unheard. the fan has not sped up yet, or if it has i have not heard it. also if the drive sound really bugs you, do what me and my roommates did: install the current games you are playing (the drive is so large compared to the old ones the used space doesn't matter), so the drive only spins to confirm the game disk and then shuts off right after. if i get a chance ill try to take a vid of the xbox, or record it from my computer.

my only issue is that the xbox can only read two flash drives at one time (three roomates and we each have our gamertag on our own drives.) mine is now on the hdd because we can only have 2 plugged in at once.

if they do bundle kinect with the new xbox (which they most certanly will) it will probably be like 20-50 dollars cheaper. to me (especial since my old xbox was on its death bed) that didnt matter. i can pre-order kinect and then pay it off over time instead of all at once. if gamestop is right about it costing 150 the bundle would probably be 399 because i don't think Microsoft would want to break that 400 mark on price.

First off thanks for the good reply and information. I do give engadget credit cause they said the noise from their Xbox might be abnormal, BUT if its not, i can totally see where what your saying is true. Haha the drive doesnt bug me when its normal noise from spinning, like my Xbox Elite USED to be, iv owned it for...idk 6 months (so its a Jasper) and it was SILENT..but all of a sudden in the past 3 months, the drive is LOUD, and super annoying, even loud when behind my entertainment center glass sliding door that i slide shut (don't worry it still gets good ventilation). I do what you said already, installing games to the HDD, and so my current Elite im quite happy with (though could be happier if they could replace the DVD drive with a quieter one). But im still excited to get the new one. I will be selling my elite to a friend so the new 360 Elite wont be costly.

I don't think I'll wait for the Kinect 360 Elite bundle, that's to far away. But i do want to wait a bit longer so i can gather as much info possible about the new 360's. Considering Microsoft's past and the Xbox 360's past...the more time you wait, the better off you'll be IMO. They were fine with a 52% failure rate for 5 years so...i worry what could be the big issue with this new Xbox (though granted, i give Microsoft some slack cause they rushed the old 360 out for release knowing it had RROD potential, but this one they have had [im assuming] year(s) to do R&D on)

well i think this xbox is the result of everyones complaints about the old one. i would assume that, like the ps3 slim, this is the final edition of the xbox 360 they will release. now they will probably start working on the next gen console, because this is what they have been working on. my guess is that microsoft will start to try and make a console that can support 3d games with out sacrificing graphics for the 3d (like sony did). also just from looking at the new one up close it is easy to see that it will get better ventilation. the old one had crap ventilation and that was easy to see once you opened it up.

All i have to say to that is i hope they are worrying less about the 3D gimmick (granted 3D's only potential is in gaming but just barely) and worry more about making sure their product is reliable and of high build quality, and that it has potential in its hardware to last another 5-10 years as a console.

And oh yeah.....MTF'ing Bluray! lol. Not that it matters considering by the time they finally jump on the band wagon , everyone will have a PS3 (if not just for blu ray). And if they cant get blu ray cause it has some deal with Sony, they could at least make their DVD drive be up-converting.

Sony doesn't own blu-ray... and it's 99% guaranteed that the next xbox will use it, assuming it uses discs at all (it probably will).

Didnt mean to imply sony owned blu ray, i meant for all i know Sony has a deal with blu-ray for blu-ray to be exclusive only to PS3. Like the Iphone and AT&T.

naw, sony wants everything possible to use blu ray since they get money back from licensing.

Not sure that sentence makes sense, but I get the idea. Sad, Xbox could have stolen away some stragler customers from PS3 if they would have put blu ray in the new 360.

EDIT: Why when i post from my Android phone, i dont get the "Posted via [H] Mobile Device"?

yeah but if they used a bluray drive then it'd probably make the xbox 360 more expensive and then they'd lose potential customers due to the higher price. Anyways, I don't think a lot of ps3 users would switch to the xbox 360 if it had a bluray drive. For one thing, games would still have to be in a dvd format, and ps3 users aren't gaining anything by having two bluray players.
