New 360 Revealed

It's still an xbox...why would anyone buy a new $300 device to replace an old device that works just as well?

From seeing the news on it today, I went and immediatly traded in my old elite 360 system at my local Gamestop within 2 hours. And got an extra $25 credit towards reserving the new system and it comes out before my birthday! Weee!!!

On top of that, I gain

1. A larger HDD for a good price vs buying seperatetly. The 250gig is $130 alone
2. A brand bew HDD *new = longer till failure*
3. Redesigned console *I'm a nerd, so I'm easy*
4. Cooler and quieter running 360 *A big bonus when playing games like Mass Effect*
5. Dedicated port to run Kinetic add on vs power and usb cables

In short, its well worth it to me. Lifes short and I work hard, so im gonna fucking enjoy my toys.

I thought the same. Give me something along the lines of the PS2 or the Wii — something that doesn't look terribly out of place next to my TV — not this pre-pubescent's wet dream of a case.

I thought it was just amusingly bad until I saw the "Chinese fan/claw slash" intake/exhaust vents on the side. Then it become abhorrent. Its mega-glossy finish and inconsistent rounded edges aren't helping it either.

It really is horrible, Alienware looking POS. One of my friends was at the presentation so I'll probably get a look at it today or tomorrow.

Here's new info from E3 at Gamespot

LOS ANGELES--Microsoft's show-stopping closer for its Electronic Entertainment Expo press conference this morning was the unveiling of the most dramatic Xbox 360 hardware revision since the console launched in November 2005. Equipped with built-in N-wireless connectivity, a 45nm CPU and GPU, the new slimline 250GB Xbox 360 will include a built-in port for the Kinect motion-sensing system and a $300 price tag.

The new Xbox 360 is edging out its elder siblings.

$300 is also the price tag of current Xbox 360 Elite model, which includes a 120GB hard drive and a comparatively bulky exterior. That model, which includes no wireless functionality, is getting a $50 price cut effective immediately. The $200 Arcade model, which doesn't even include a hard drive, is being similarly discounted, and will now only cost $150.

The $300 Xbox 360 slim will be the sole model for a while.

Ryan Moore, product marketing manager for Xbox, told GameSpot that both models are also being discontinued. Once they leave the retail channel, the new slimline Xbox 360 will be the sole Xbox mode on the market--for a time. Moore said that Microsoft is currently working on a second new Xbox 360 which will be offered at the arcade's price point of $200. He declined to say what functionalities the cheaper model would or would not have.

One likely scenario is the cheaper model will essentially be a slim arcade with no wi-fi capabilties or a hard drive. Contrary to early reports, the new 250GB 360 has a fully detachable hard drive, much like its elder brothers. However, like the console itself, it is much smaller than its forbearer.

Moore also said that going forward, all future models of the Xbox 360 would not have names, and would only be designated by their memory capacity. He decline to elaborate on whether that meant that all future 360s would have a hard drive of some sort.

Hm. how much did you get for your trade?

I'd also like to know how much you got for your trade in. I want to capitalize on this before no one wants an old xbox :p

Depends on model. I got $138 for my elite 120gig 360 at my gamestop which includes a bonus $25 for trading in to reserve the new system. They didn't even have the SKU yet for the new system but Gamestop HQ was working furiously to get it out ASAP. They said that the extra credit offer will go on for a few weeks and then end.

Hm. That means I'd be lucky to get $100 for my 20gb arcade.

This is good, im in for one for sure in january, good bye pc gaming

meh, I don't like the look and the heatsink looks really meh. Much rather get a new jasper arcade and find a used 60GB or 120GB HD. I am still rocking the original Launch unit which has been repaired by MS once. Holding strong for now. Price is decent, considering the bundle.

the new 360 looks about 75% of the old 360
oh wells might wait for the bundle with kninect or buying it tomorrow
haha

Isn't it great how console owners never have to upgrade unlike those silly PC enthusiaaaaa.....whoops. :D

I'm just wondering if this incarnation will be more reliable...it might be enough to get me to get another 360 (I sold mine last year.)

It's still an xbox...why would anyone buy a new $300 device to replace an old device that works just as well?

I did this with the 400 dollar CODMW2 edition. Pretty much I had an older original model with a 20 gig hard drive that was full. Drive was going to be 150 bucks by itself. Add 60 bucks for a game I was interested in and 2 new controllers at 40 a shot. The cost were adding up quick to the point I said screw it and just bought the new console.

Anyway glad to see the hard drive is removable on this one as the MS site said internal. Not a big fan of the looks but if it works then who cares.

Ask the untold millions who bought a PS3 slim to replace their PS3... and that went so far as to actually remove features.

I hardly consider the cost of "upgrading" a console every 4-5 years even comparable to how often you need to upgrade a high end gaming PC to "stay on top". This coming from someone who's been there, done that. And its gotten old.....Even Starcraft 2 isn't doing it for me, never thought i'd actually here myself say that.

So you're paying $162 plus tax to get a larger HDD and built in wifi? Something that the console should have had years ago standard?

I also find it completely insane how Microsoft is selling the quieter/less power as a "feature". The heat/noise/rrod was a design flaw from day one that should have been fixed by MS ages ago, not sold as a new feature... its insane.

The new 360 is a complete dissapointment. At $200 it would have been interesting but at $300 it's a bad joke.

I didn't get that.

I still love my ps3. Got the original launch 60gb then bought a 250gig laptop HDD for $70 a couple years later. Best feature set you can find in a console.

Not for those of us who don't have one. It's not for people who already own an xbox. There would be no point in buying this. No, this along with kinect is for a new market of people who don't own xbox's.

I still find a $300 360 a tough sell vs a ps3 at the same price.

All depends on what you want. The 360 for better online play. New ESPN channel.
The ps3 for a bluray player. I already have a bluray drive and I rip all my movies so the ps3 doesn't have that advantage for me.

I don't get this! I was hoping for a smaller unit with a built in power supply. It took them years to get this new design out. I have to admit, it's quite a letdown.

I must be in the minority cos I really dig the design, think it will look smart next to the ps3.

Go cry somewhere else then, im happy with what MS is providing us console users. My gaming rig below hasn't run any games besides Starcraft 2 the past few months and I no longer care about that anymore. I'm becoming less a PC gamer with each passing year.....

Oh, and I don't pay tax in my state FYI.

Ouch, did I hit a nerve?

I was simply commenting on how the price bought you very little in improvements over whats out there. The new 360 brings nothing new to the table that others haven't already put out. For current owners of a 360, it brings abolutely nothing. But I guess you really don't want to have a discussion on here, you'd just rather live in fanboyville. Especially since your reply didnt really address my point that all the new 360 has are technologies and fixes that are a few years late.

If your not interested or buying it, then why bother bitching about it? Its not relevant to you

Last I checked this was a discussion forum to talk about consoles....

And that this thread was titled "New 360 Revealed" where you know, we could discuss our thoughts on the new 360. I missed the disclaimer that said you can only discuss the new 360 if you plan on buying one.

Actually, I think the entire console industry isn't really bringing anything new to the table. I wish all of the companies well with the whole motion capture tech, but I honestly don't see it as being an awesome new feature.

I still picked up the new Xbox though, as my elite is a bit on the loud side for my home theater system and I'm guessing it's probably going to die eventually.

What you mean 4 - 5 years Willis? How many different SKU's have there been of the xbox, and how many people have effectively upgraded to a better SKU for improved features or more stable hardware?

I know 360 users who seem to upgrade their console more often than I do my PC :p

What a retard for moving it while the disc is spinning. That is the fault of the stupid console owner, not MS.

I've seen a couple posts on different forums complaining that the 360 scratches discs if you move it while it's running. Isn't it common sense that if a drive is spinning a disc, there's a good possibility that the lens will hit it if you shift the drive? People act like it's a defect when it's a characteristic of any non-clamping drive mechanism.

I don't mind the design. From what I've read it sounds like it's VERY quiet, and of course having a 250GB hard drive is really nice, now that we have game installs. Still, I'm quite happy with my current unit and 120GB hard drive, so I'll be hanging onto it for now.
