WikiLeaks Founder Arrested

I know you guys love to hate and hate to love and love to love and hate to hate and whatever, but think about who benefits from all of this crap. 2 sides only.

++++++++ Surfers reference? :D

The first side being Assange and his minion. They are extortionists, but alas as NOT being a US citizen it is hard to convict of treason.

Ironically, if Assange was a U.S. citizen he might be protected from criminal charges (espionage, not treason.) He may be anyways if the U.S. charges him.

At this point, I'd welcome secession. I'm tired of rednecks trotting the world and doing fucked up things in the name of MY country or the promise of a supposed democracy, arming the Afgani warlords in the '80's (funny, aren't we fighting some Afgani warlords?) , arming BOTH sides of the Iran-Iraq war (wait, where have I heard about Iraq and Iran in the news lately.. not important, I'll think about that when it's more convenient), the School of the Americas at Ft. Benning (hmm.. a flood of illegal immigrants from central america.. wonder why they'd want to leave their tropical paradise) , just to name a few.
Let them have their own country, we can build a fence and then bitch that they're completely ruining the new "Amurrica" when they cross illegally, I hear that works like a charm..

I am kind of in the same point. I wish no harm to anyone but at the same time I can understand why people are pissed off with America.

Things are not as secure as they'd like people to believe.
Remember Sandy Berger trying ti make away with government documents hidden in his socks?

Yup. I sure do.

Finally, there's one obvious question that's basically Intelligence 101 and it goes like this: Cui bono?

WOW and I thought I was a liberal. I must be a moderate, because you people who support what this guy is doing are fools. There are some things that sound great in principle, but do not work in the real world. Just like in a family/friendship/job some thing should remain secret and honesty is not always the best policy. Some of you need to grow up and live in the real world.

+1.

If he didn't do anything wrong....
A) Why has he been running? For the leaked data? Then why did he just turn himself in for a petty rape charge that he claims never happened?

That leads to B)
B) Why did he turn himself in all of a sudden?

If you are wanted by MULTIPLE countries for leaking data.... and run and never turn yourself in for that. Then why would you turn yourself in for one country on a $800 fine/"rape" charge????

Nobody set this up, so its not obvious like you say.... the guy is either an idiot, or is doing this all for attention. THAT is the 2 obvious options here.

According to that article:

For its part, WikiLeaks has distributed a statement from Mark Stephens, an attorney at the London-based FSI law firm, saying "this behavior is not a prosecution, but a persecution," and: "Our client has always maintained his innocence. The allegations against him are false and without basis."

Stephens added: "Despite his right to silence, my client has repeatedly offered to be interviewed, first in Sweden before he left, and then subsequently in the UK (including at the Swedish Embassy), either in person or by telephone, videoconferencing or e-mail, and he has also offered to make a sworn statement on affidavit. All of these offers have been flatly refused..."
The rape allegations have attracted some skepticism because of the timing: WikiLeaks launched in early 2007, but the rape allegations became public a few weeks after Assange drew the wrath of the U.S. government and military for releasing more than 75,000 confidential files related to the war in Afghanistan.

This whole charge thing is just a smear campaign. So when/if he does release some truly epic documents, everyone can point back to this as a way to discredit him as a rapist/terrorist/extorter.

I'm not saying I support the guy, however I think folks really need to widen their perspective on all this.

Just like in a family/friendship/job some thing should remain secret and honesty is not always the best policy.
Can you give an example? Just curious, trying to understand where you're coming from.

And aren't the liberals the ones who have, throughout history, evolved our society for the better? Almost all our world's heroes were liberal, no? Didn't they also argue against those who claimed "it doesn't work in the real world!?"

That's because the "rape" charge is bogus.
I don't know why Sweden even agreed to it.

It's funny to see governments grasp at straws for "lawful" reasons to bring him in for questioning.
Its what happens when a lion gets backed into a corner and rears its ugly head?

Ding ding ding! We have a winner! You have won the award for most arrogant liberal in this thread. Congratulations, that is quite the accomplishment!

I'm sure everyone is enjoying the lack of rights, anal cavity searches, all at the price of a false sense of security. The fact that this man was arrested for something completely unrelated to the subject that they are destined to charge him for? Liberalism at it's finest. But go ahead and keep thinking liberals are gods. What happened this election year again?

No worries, if the massive might and sophistication of the entire US clandestine, intelligence, and military hasn't found "Osama" yet after 9 fuckin' years of wasted effort, I'm quite certain that even though Mr. Assange is somewhere in Britain right now probably chained to a desk that he's completely safe from being "captured."

Also, this is a decent rundown of the trumped rape bullshit:

http://www.crikey.com.au/2010/12/02...the-swedes-are-making-it-up-as-they-go-along/

"Sweden’s Public Prosecutor’s Office was embarrassed in August this year when it leaked to the media that it was seeking to arrest Assange for rape, then on the same day withdrew the arrest warrant because in its own words there was “no evidence”. The damage to Assange’s reputation is incalculable. More than three quarters of internet references to his name refer to rape."

Character Assassination 101, indeed.

Its what happens when a lion gets backed into a corner and rears its ugly head?

Much worse things can happen when they're actually "backed into a corner".

This is a cranky government trying to look diplomatic... comedy gold because it's one of the very things Assonge leaks explain.

They were going to find him eventually anyway, and soon. He's not hiding in caves sending his leaks by messenger pigeon.

Liberalism at it's finest. But go ahead and keep thinking liberals are gods. What happened this election year again?

OK, we're talking about two different things, sorry for the confusion

Dissapointing thread and dissapointing reaction from the general population and [H] staff.

I say this even though I think Assange should be held accountable.

OK, we're talking about two different things, sorry for the confusion

Uh huh.... you were using "liberal" from its dictionary definition of "open to new ideas" ?
That doesn't fly in politics. It's just like saying "We're all homos.............(PAUSE)...... homo-sapiens!"

You mean like communism?

Guess what: it doesn't work in the real world. I thought the Soviet Union, Eastern bloc, Latin and South American states, Cuba, North Korea, and China might have clued you in on that. The only communist states that still exist are those who have incorporated capitalism into their economy.

Except they never found that guy who was hiding in caves. :p

I just find it interesting that Mastercard, Visa, Paypal, and Amazon all of a sudden terminated their relationship with Wikileaks right when the US started bitching.

Unless you run a TV station or put out a newspaper of some sort, hysteria is bad for business.

yeah, again, I didn't mean "liberal" in the political sense. Of course, if that's the way you initially interpret the word, that's understandable too.

I guess I'm just not into labels, people assuming if you are "lib" or "republican" that it's necessarily a bad thing.

That's prejudice IMO. Just like What Beck was saying, about the sex charges being from a "leftist", the labels aren't really useful in any argument, and distract more then solidify the real issues. In other words, not much of anything is really stark black/white. Sure, you can look at things that way, but in reality it's often much more complex and there are no clear winners and losers.

Right.... cause if he didn't do anything wrong, why would he turn himself in then?

Just like leaking all these documents, if he didn't do anything wrong which he claims.... why didn't he innocently turn himself in for that?

He's admitting one crime, and avoiding others.... and then turns himself in. Grade A moron if you ask me. They are going to convict him of something, watch. I just don't see the purpose of him turning himself in, especially when he is soooooo innocent.

Explain that.... it's makes perfect sense.

I am far from liberal and you must have not been around for the last 10 yrs. What do you read, other than [H], for your information? Again more harm was done to personal rights signed with a "conservative" pen than liberal right now. Liberals tax and distribute wealth. They do not usually wire tap, arrest and hold with out charges, detain with out trials, etc.. Either you are 12 yrs old or you have not really looked att eh world outside of your Amish farm for the last decade and a half.

Now you are going to give me a liberal award. Thanks but that would be like the Hoff telling someone they sing great. Good for TV not for real life. Start contributing to the story or troll somewhere else.

"The greatest threat we face right now from Wikileaks is not the information it has spilled and may spill in the future, but the reactionary response to it that’s building in the United States that promises to repudiate the rule of law and our free speech traditions, if left unchecked."

QFT. And that's the biggest worry at this point: not that some info got out, but the reaction to it, blown so far out of proportion it's not even funny, and it's getting worse - and it's not going to end anytime soon.

By the way, they just showed him in a recent hotel room and he's frantically running to his new iMac. He snags all the cables and runs out the door with the huge iMac in his hands past the cameraman LOL!

What a tool.

Would you want to be a wanted person having to look over your shoulder every second of the day? Guilty or not I can't imagine that's a good way to live.

Huh? He's being held in a UK jail without bail...

What crime is he admitting to?

There was a fucking bullshit international arrest warrant out for him. I would imagine he turned himself in to try and clear his name of these trumped up rape charges that just a couple months earlier Sweden said they had no evidence of. The more he dodged them, the worse it looked.

Liberalism at it's finest as well - logical falacy that I am a supporter of redneck hardcore republican. You are associating things that you can not do. The fact that Bush was labeled a republican going into an election year does not equate to supporting such acts. Anyone can tell that items such as that was completely asinine and a quick reaction to 9/11. The generality of tossing away rights for false security is a liberal mindset.

Now then, excuse me while I go to this gun free zone because my life is no longer in danger.

What the fuck does any of this have to do with liberals and republicans? Not many of you have any idea of what the political landscape even looks like. The majority of our politicians are progressive populists, yes even the ones who say they're conservative. (D) and (R) don't mean anything and they never really have. They were the same party until the mid 1800's.

Anyway, Assange will probably face trial for some of the things he has done. Either way, he needs to work with authorities in their investigations. It looks like he is doing so.

I think a better title for this new is "WikiLeaks founder turns himself in to British authorities". The current title makes it sound like they hunted him down.

Capitalism was at one time considered a "liberal" idea.

That's true, but that's why it's now either referred to as "classical liberalism" or "libertarianism". Modern liberalism is barely watered down socialism combined with the same kind of morality enforcement that evangelical Christian conservatives get a hard-on for. Have to watch your terminology, sadly.

And he's probably about to be named Time Magazine's Person of the Year, go figure:

http://wireupdate.com/wires/13032/r...ssange-will-be-named-time-person-of-the-year/

Guess we'll see it if it happens. Honestly, I don't find it surprising in any way at all.

Didnt osama bin laden and bush get that honor? It's not really the same as "best person of the year" more, "most notorious of the year".

I don't really think he means anything to most people. Then again, I can't think of another replacement...maybe Lady Gaga.
