What was your first accelerated graphics card?

Let's see, 1st card was:
2x Orchid Richeous 3d Voodoo 2 12mb Scan-Line Interleave (SLI) Awww Yeah Battlezone ftw

The rest (iirc):
Creative TNT2 Ultra
Voodoo 5 5500 (RIP, died in a year...)
Radeon 8500
Ti4200
Radeon 9700 Pro
Radeon 9800 Pro
8800GTX 512MB
4850 512MB
560 Ti

Geforce 2 MX - useless

Geforce 4 MX 440 - useless

Geforce FX 5600 - not as useless, but hot and loud, oh god, so loud

Geforce 8800GT - first GOOD graphics card I ever owned, in the sense that I could actually run modern games with decent settings and FPS, not "barely playable" as before. Even at $260 it was great value, since it represented 8800GTX performance for half the price.

Geforce 460 1gb - first card that was quiet and cool, but actually had good performance as well; sadly I'm cpu-bottlenecked atm and can't get it to full potential. Didn't plan to buy this but the 8800GT finally flaked out after three years of being overclocked on that single slot first-gen cooler.

Would have bought a 6950 and flashed to 6970 if I had the option to pick and choose this past year. About the same price as my last three cards: $260.

When are the new architectures coming out and what sort of improvements can we expect?

Speculative at this stage but i'm thinking
HD7800 series: similar to HD6900 series but much reduced TDP - february-april
HD7900 series: 40-50% on top of HD6970 - march-june
GTX600 series: similar to GTX500 series, possibly with a 10-20% faster card than the 580 - february-june
GTX700(?) series: maybe 50-60% on top of GTX580 - june-september

1. S3 Savage,
2. Voodoo 3 (I remember wanting this so bad, and it had a cool looking box),
3. Geforce MX440 (this first video card i bought with my own money, it was the summer I left school so had very little money),
4. Geforce 5200FX Almost 10 years later and i have even less money now (cool recession bro) I got this card march of this year after coming back to counter strike and realising I need DX9 to run it, which the MX440 doesn't have. This is my current card in my main and only rig

Think running a pimped out rig is [H], try gaming on a P4 - 5200FX where a single smoke nade drops your FPS to 6 and then come at me son ;)

Diamond Monster Voodoo 2 12MB's. I worked all summer at the age of 15 to get a second one for SLI. It makes me sad thinking about it actually.

I had a Matrox Mystique that had VERY weak 3D acceleration, but was mainly a pretty decent 2D card with some 3D tacked on.
My first "real" 3D card was an Orchid Righteous 3D, a Voodoo 1.

I had one of those Mystique's also - and it sucked. Dropped it and went with the Voodoo 1, I think. Anyone remember Vesa Local Bus?

Voodoo 1 here. Diamond Monster 3D
monster3d.gif

On a 233 MMX overclocked to 292 (yes that's MHz). I was quite pleased with the 83 Mhz bus...smokin fast!

Damn I'm gettin' old!

Yep, exact same card. Bought it so I could play GLQuake @ a whopping 640x480 :D

My first one was a Monster Voodoo 2 12mb. I couldn't believe how sweet that card made quake look, even though it was like 3 weeks pay for me at the time.

Lets see if I can remember it all...

Voodoo1 4mb
Riva 128 4mb
Voodoo2 8mb
Voodoo2 12mb sli
GeForce 256
GeForce 2
GeForce 3
ATI X800
ATI 9800pro
GeForce4
ATI 2600XT
geforce 6800GT 256mb sli
geforce 6800 ultra sli
geforce 7800GTX 512mb sli
geforce 8800GTX 768mb sli
geforce GTX260 864mb sli
geforce gtx 480 1.5gb
geforce gtx 580 1.5gb
geforce gtx 580 1.5gb sli

And none of those cards can match the FUN I had playing Strike Commander and privateer on my 486 DX40 with DOS 6.0 with a joystick made by thrustmaster - and this was before they had different models. The joystick WAS a "thrustmaster" lol. And lets not forget that super badass 14" CRT capable of a FULL 60hz!

Man those were the days...

ATI All-in-Wonder 4mb PCI (Rage II). Nice video quality, but 3D acceleration sucked. The only game I had that played well was the version of MechWarrior2 that came packaged with it. I really didn't get to enjoy 3D gaming to the fullest until my Guillemot Voodoo 1.

4mb ATi video onboard an HP 8290 desktop, not even sure WHAT it was. Played Mechwarrior 2 like a champ.

IIRC...

The amazing VOODOO RUSH!!

..... yea a horrible card..... lol

Then the Voodoo Banshee
Then... I've had soo many after that it starts getting a little hazy...
Pretty sure I had a TNT2 Ultra at some point....
Geforce
Geforce 2
Radeon 9700...I remember this being a crazy good card at the time..
many many more

The funny part is that when you talk to kids born in the 90s about "3D Graphics Cards" today, they think you're talking about the shutter glasses and 3DTV gaming, cause even the weakest cards all have 3D acceleration today.

I don't think there are any plain 2D cards anymore...

Matrox make those "buisness application" cards that are made to run a load of monitors. Though they can probably do minimal 3d they are 2d focused.

My first that I bought myself was a Voodoo Banshee.

It played Baldur's Gate well.

Integrated Rage Pro.

First actual expansion card was a Voodoo 3 2000 PCI.

hopefully my memory serves me right.

Ati 7000 in a POS hp computer
9800 AIW PRO
x800GTO
6800 GT

PCI-E \/
8800 GTS
Ati 4870
Ati 6950

3DFX Voodoo 3 3000 (16MB video ram?)

To play the online PC game: Delta Force (the very first one) using my Bellsouth & AOL dialup, 56k.

Diamond Stealth 3D was my first unaccelerated 3D card.
An OEM Voodoo1 was my first accelerated one.
I'm still using a Voodoo 2 in my Pentium 233.

I remember having an ATI Rage 3D Pro. I also remember ordering my geforce 256 sdr card.

kt133 chipset and the 1st gen geforce = disaster

S3 virge
Rendition Vertite 2100
S3 Savage
S3 Savage 3d
S3 Savage 4

ATi Radeon 8500
ATi Radeon 9500 Pro
ATi Radeon 1800XL
ATi Radeon 1950Pro
ATi Radeon 3870
Nvidia 8600GS-M (what a pos that thing turned out to be)

Current cards
ATi Radeon 4870
ATi Radeon 4570m

first card i can remember is the voodoo banshee 16mb, also known as the 3D blaster banshee made by Creative when it originally came out. i still have the card to this day and it still works.

Yep, exact same card. Bought it so I could play GLQuake @ a whopping 640x480 :D

Man, I didn't have much money back then.

I kept my Pentium 150@200Mhz (not MMX) and 6mb Voodoo 1 (Miro Highscore 3d, essentially Canopus Pure 3d for the European market where I lived at the time) for WAY too long.

The computer was a zombie mish-mash of upgrades, some of which had been with the computer from my 286 days (notably, the 5.25" drive).

I didn't wind up replacing it until Fall 2000 (my sophomore year in college) after my first college summer job when I jumped directly to a Duron 650Mhz@950 and a Geforce 2 GTS :p

I'm a bit young when it comes to the tech world, but I remember the first graphics card my brother purchased was the Voodoo 2 I think. And I believe my first card was an ATI Rage card. I actually think I had a few variants of the Rage series before the next upgrade I had.

Voodoo 1 - Diamond Monster 3D

Anyone remember how big that retail box was? That thing was massive!

Man, hmmm.... I want to say an ATI x300 but I think I had a random nVidia Card before.
I might actually of had a shitty pci card as well in my VERY First Build.

First 2D accelerator card was an onboard Valkyrie chip on an old Mac Quadro, ran accelerated graphics for Marathon at a massive 20fps

First 3D accelerator was a Rage Pro that came with the 333MHz Rev. D iMacs

This thread seems to come up once every six months or so. There is a search function on the forum you know.

Anyway my first 3D accelerator was the Diamond Multimedia Stealth 3D 2000. This was one of the earliest accelerators on the market.

Anyway this is my graphics card history in it's entirety. It predates 3D accelerators. :D

Diamond Monster 3D specifically for playing Quake 2. Those were the days. Then the Monster 3DII came out. I remember getting 2 "brown box" 12mb versions of Creative's 3Dfx cards and running SLI!
