Warhammer Online Thread!

I haven't been following WAR much but I got really excited after reading this thread. A lot of the features seem really cool, and the pvp sounds like it's done much better than other mmos have been able to accomplish. That said, I was severely dissapointed by what I saw in screenshots and video once I started looking into it... it just doesn't look right. It's 2008 and I feel like I'm watching gameplay footage of EQ1. Now I know all of you are going to come back and say, "graphics != gameplay!!!" and I can agree somewhat, hell I've played my fair share of MUDs and gotten all kinds of immersed in them, but we aren't talking about a MUD.

The animations are clunky, the graphics look very dated (from what I'm seeing they don't even look as nice as WoW), and this is something that would definitely hinder my enjoyment. Perhaps even if they were to make the animations not so... stiff... I don't know. It doesn't look right when characters attack, when they are hit, when they are even just standing around. I haven't played it yet but for it to be coming out in under a month the way it is just seems like they are selling an idea and not a product. I guess I'll wait and see how it plays out.

Just FYI to all the UK based people out there, so far there's been no reliable pre-order places, but www.play.com are now offering for 29.99 with early access etc.

*EDIT* I should note that it appears that this does not offer open beta access, only the live game headstart and the in game items, I've checked the details and the only people offering beta access so far for the STANDARD EU edition is D2D and EA store :(

I can't wait for this game now, the more I read the better it sounds, it's almost as if they've taken a look at WoW and written a big list of things that are fundamentally broken, badly implimented or just frustrating as hell, and then specifically fixed all those things.

Things like tracking the number of bears you've killed outside quests which ask you to kill bears, meaning you don't have to re-do killing the same animal another 20 times. Public quests stop the problems of waiting and queuing for dungeons and instances.

RvR is just such a good idea, MMO's are large scale right? You want to see 100's of players in battle, and why the hell not? If i get to siege a castle with say 50 players on my team and 50 players on the enemy team I'm going to be a happy bunny, if they can manage more than that, say 100vs100 then fan-fucking-tastic, I doubt it will even meet the head on clashes of 300vs300vs300 that planetside managed at peak, but a good few hundred would be epic.

Next to planetside I have to say this is one of the few MMO's which has a truly decent end game, pitting the players against each other is the only way to get an interesting end game and keep people playing, WoW doesn't have this and will never have this as long as they keep the current layout, I'm sick of WoWs elitest grind bullshit of needing blues to get into endgame dungeon XYZ, I just want to play and smash some skulls and not grind over and over for kit that will only let me grind over and over for more kit, which quickly becomes a loop with less and less return meaning expansion dungeons will just be even more epic grinds for even rarer loot. WoW is fragmented and crap, WAR is the future of MMO's, anyone that played planetside will know how cool RvR fighting is when its the main focus.

I've made my pre order and am looking at getting some time off work to get into the beta during the day.

Well i was on the fence for a long time due to the NDA being lifted so late etc, but aftre reading all the beta impressions, they seem to really be doings ome stuff differently and right. So i have preordered it!

Not sure what screenshots/videos you're looking at, but WAR looks VERY good for an MMO. The animations are mostly fine, and the newest patch that's coming out to beta testers today should be addressing a lot of the "clunky" animations :).

AOC didn't lift their NDA until after launch :). I've been playing the beta of WAR for several months now and it is definitely an excellent game... there were a few major things they wanted to put in before lifting the NDA such as a new combat responsiveness patch, which is part of why it lifted later than they wanted to.

I've just updated my last post about the play.com purchase, they dont actually offer the early beta access, only live game headstart and bonus items :(

Also some questions.

Is Crossfire supported, I know SLI is broken atm.
Widescreen resolutions? Specifically 2560x1600
AA and AF supported in game yet?
How big is the client so far + how much in patches?
Do you need seperate gear for RvR and PvE? How hard is that to manage?
Is there an engineering/turret deploying class for destruction?
How do I shot web?

thx

yup 1 big reason i never bought into AOC. But i love the warhammer fantasy universe dearly, so i was a bit more concerned with this one. Glad to have been hearing how excellent a game it is.

For those complaining about graphics. They aren't all in the game yet. The download is already 10gb so having more textures would make for an even larger download. So essentially those of you on the preview weekend played the game on medium settings. But it does equal a lag free experience and that's what really matters in a PvP or rather RvR game.

1) as far as I know, talking beta boards here, yes. there is improved frame rate
2) not 100% sure on this. I'll poke around the internals
3) not through the client yet, with the graphics card specific control panels, yes you can force it
4) 9.4 gigs, total download. patches are about 100-400 megs. will update tomorrow
5) no, not really. RvR gear works fine for pve. the largest "instance" is the end game, pve is either "open" dungeons, like mmos used to have, or 6 man instances. no "must have XXX gear with these stats/resists" to do this specific instance kinda thing
6) magus, the chaos caster is the closest to the engineer
7) err?

While graphics are a personal preference, I just disagree with your comparisons overall. The graphics are very nice, more still if you take the time to force the options through your control panel for those that aren't in the game yet.

The animations, if you read the thread, were addressed by Mark Jacobs as being one of their priorities to fix and should be addressed in an upcoming beta patch before the next preview weekend.

Aren't you guys tired of WoW's classes yet? I've played them all and I'm burned out... I don't want to play a class closest to WoW's anything =[

no because i only ben playing wow for a month:)

Then play Warhammer so you dont have to decide between the two. I'm personally sticking with WoW because the new expansion is looking great and I've been playing for since release.

Wait what, closed beta is open again? Shit, I thought they closed it for good...

Anyone know a good guild that will be playing destruction? Prefer casual, friendly, yet competitive pvp'rs.

What would be closest to a Mage from WoW....

Or more specifically a pvp frost mage. I like the micro-managment of CDs + water elemental pet. They also have high survivabilty/snares/kites.

I have been 2200 rated in all threee brackets for the last 2 seasons....I am truely bored to death by now. I might roll a death knight in expansion but I would much prefer to get into a whole new game. So what class sounds like it would be best for me?? :D

Fortunately WAR has done away with the cc/kite/snare-fest that was WoW. I also played a frost mage for 3 years in WoW and there is nothing like that in WAR. The closest you're going to get in WAR is a fire specced mage w/o frost nova and polymorph or a better comparison would be a Destro-lock. Kill them before they get to you otherwise have fun slinging spells with a tank beating on your face. Bright Wizards for Order and Sorcerers for Destruction are the only two pure dps/mage classes in the game.

Interesting...well what about something that has the mobility and survivabilty of said frost mage that can still dish out some dmg. I always new I was getting myself into a 'glass-canon' when I rolled the mage but that never ended up being the case as frost is amazing at survivabilty + burst. Also, I understand the game is not balanced for 1v1 but which class in this game would be the SL/SL Lock from WoW LAWLZ! (I hate them) I think i would enjoy playing a drain/outlast type of class. Shadow warrior and or Archmage is kind of grasping my attention right now.

I'm being a sourceress...or an engineer depending if I go destruction or not...I like the look of them turrets for defence, but I love casters to bits, only lvl70 WoW toon was a frost spec'd mage, could have some AoE fun with that.

I would say the magus is a lot closer to frost mage, its a lot more survivable than the sorc/bright wizard. Magus gets some long-range nukes, some pbae's, a turret pet, a beefy armor spell, etc.

There really isn't a class in WAR that can afford you the cc/kite/snare play-style you've grown used to. Mythic has taken a pretty hard stance against incapacitating your opponent for the entirety of the fight even though DaoC was the exact opposite regarding their AoE/disable spells. Arms Warriors and Frost Mages in WoW were abnormalities in that they had all the strengths of their traditional archetypes and little-to-none of their weaknesses.

Shadow Warriors specced into Skirmish/Scout seem to have a good amount of CC/Snare at their disposal, the only problem is once they catch up you don't have blink to get you out of it and you're going to be forced to switch to assault stance and exchange blows. The other class with some good cc would be the Chosen but he's a tank archetype. As for a drain/outlast type any of the hybrid caster/healers would sort of work i.e. Shaman and Archmage. They both have to balance their offensive abilities and healing abilities but you can read more into the mechanics of the class cause it'll take too long to type out. If you're going to have a healer buddy following you around you can always play the Bright Wizard/Sorceress and spec into their DoT trees which does put out some pretty sick damage and helps you engage multiple opponents because DoT spells usually have little to no cast time so you can kite.

Ya I edited my last post to say that I have been reading and a shadow warrior or archmage sounds the most interesting to me. I cant depend on having a friend that will be solely a healer so I'm not sure. The mix of healing and doing dmg sounds awsome as a archmage but the mobility and lethality of the shadow warrior really appeals to me as well.

I think a Shadow Warrior would be more up your alley. Scout stance gives them 10% more range on their attacks so they have a slight range advantage against other RDPS classes. The best defense is to keep alert and begin kiting early or run if you're unsure. The tactic of baiting your opponents stun or charge/intercept so you can blink out and kite them doesn't work in this game. The tank classes have a lot of anti-cc/snare abilities such as Juggernaut which is sort of like a 'The Beast Within' spell from WoW.

Archmage will definately be more self-sufficient but keep in mind WAR is about large-scale RvR not Arena play so you will easily be able to sit back and launch arrows all day as a SW without really ever exposing yourself.

Looking forward to the September 7 open Beta. I really want to try this out. Sick of WoW and I will not be getting the expansion.

i think they will rebalance magus, they have nice aoe root, but otherwise they are not too, at least from what i see

us still under NDA have a patch, all I can say right now. I would expect everyone going into OB this weekend will see the notes, I think
(what I get for using the same online name for 13 years)

What class would match the closest to WoW's Rogue ??
What class would match the closest to WoW's Hunter?

1) Witch elf or Witch hunter (with WARs limited style of stealth, they have specific openners from stealth, but no "chain stun locks" kinda things)
2) I would say the Squig herder or shadowwarrior (if you are talking ranged DPS + some melee with pets/other options)

just for informational purposes, there are a LOT more graphic options in game now under settings

We need a new thread on what classes everyone is going to roll. I am debating between 3;
Disciple of Khaine - I like healing, I like doing damage... whats not to like with a hybrid?
Marauder - Great DPS.. seems fun
Chosen - Not dying is pretty awesome... being a freakin' truck is always nice.

I love the Rogue class...but I am the only player that really doesn't care for the stealth part of the Rogue...my main reason is for the lightning fast dual wielding attacks. What class in WAR is the best match for a warp speed killing machine with dual weapons ?

I've downloaded the client but when I try to login to run the patches I'm denied. Is that supposed to happen right now? I have the open beta key activated. I just want to be ready to go for the 7th.

Have you guys had any luck with the patches?

Yes, unless you're a closed beta Elder at this time you cannot patch.
