I feel for ya. I'm glad I have Comcast. The cap sucks, don't get me wrong, but it's fast and I don't really have much downtime. Maybe an hour or so a month.

As much as people rip on Comcast I have never had problems with them. If you really hate the cap get the 100$ business class, that gets rid of the cap and you get a static IP. Hell for 10$ extra a month you can get 6 total public IP addresses.

But the fiber I was referring to was at work. We are at 5Mbps right now and will be at 10Mbps very soon. That is both up and down, which is very nice for up, but iffy for down, that is why we load balance the traffic with a cheap Comcast business to get the extra down speed.

Fine...but i'm not going to tell you a secret unless you get to at least 4.5gh/z. Youll really want to know this.

Is it me or do NPC villages seem to almost always appear in deserts?

Deserts seem to be one of the few places that are flat enough to spawn villages consistently. Everywhere else is usually full of mountains, rivers, and huge trenches.

:EDIT: Also, I'm sure you guys are probably looking for someone that you trust to host the server, but I'm curious as to what hardware would be required to run it? I've got a 30/3 connection and a PC sitting around with a Q6600 and 4GB RAM. Is 4GB too little?

anyone found one of those fortress things? I haven't yet.
I am digging the canyons though, specially the under ground ones. The bigger cave systems defintely make it more fun as you can more easily find the basic resources without having to hunt all over the place.

This is supposed to find the location of strongholds for you, if you're that desperate to find one, lol.

Not sure how good this is but it will give you an idea on how many would be good with your connection

Says I could host 9 players plus myself.. Only limiting factor is the upload speed. I'm not sure how accurate that is, though. G1 only has 1Mbit upload (I believe), and his server wouldn't start lagging until we got 10 people on, so you would think that 3Mbit would be able to handle more than that. Perhaps the site is suggesting that many for an optimal experience..

Result: Yes, a million times!

You can host a maximum of:

30
Players at the same time, plus yourself

You've got a fast enough internet connection and enough RAM to cope with a decent number of players.

I actually kinda like it too :p
I like it too, the biomes are pretty diverse and it even has rivers. We could have the main spawn area in the swamp, and have buildings either in the ocean to one side or the mountains in the other. Oceans aren't as big but I can deal with it :p so I think this is a good choice.

for seeds, i tried Talent and Talent25....

Talent25 was an island but had a ton of trees

Talent was a bigger island and was basically flat from what i saw from the spawn.

if i had to pick one i would say try Talent25

Hey, how are you guys setting the map size and doing the maps?

I'm using cartograph G and servercraft....but I don't know much about the settings.

I have a Bukkit server that I was loading up with WorldBorder plugin. I set the border to whatever, 1k x 1k, etc. Then did an option to pre-fill all the chunks within that border.

Got it...thanks. It is slow....of course, I don't have my 920 overclocked anymore. 2.66GHz sometimes can be quite slow compared to 4.4Ghz.

Its slow here too, at least the fill part of Worldborder. If I turn up the number of chunks it tries to generate, it leaks memory and just starts stalling out. So it's artificially caped pretty low :/

yup it is not,,

the world generation part is prolly linked to HDD speed as well I would think... but no real way of knowing lol...

I have 4x128GB SSD in RAID-0 on a LSI 9260-8i.

When doing the bukkit WorldBorder "fill" command in a 1000x1000 world, it was about 1.2% every 6 seconds.

This is on my i920 at 2.66Ghz, and 24GB of RAM.

I just found a really weird MC bug. I started up a local SMP server to do some testing and such. I granted myself creative mode and started laying blocks. Every few blocks turn to thick grass after placing them... Anyone else encounter this before?

The warnings will go away when you run the server on an SSD because of the access+write latency, not because of throughput related capabilities.

The CPU plays the greatest role in the speed of generating new chunks.

Gen'd my 1.8 ocean spawn that I mentioned 18 or so pages back now (man you lot blather on!) out to 5000x5000 using the Minecraft Land Generator tool (I went and found after seeing the other pretty square maps in here). Start out in the middle of the ocean.... after wandering around a while on my own, I wanted to see how far out land was. You spawn basically dead center on this map (better know how to swim!!). Looks like due south is my best bet. Several cool looking towns spawned down there as well.

What are you using to make the maps like that?

this is how my first re-gen for my server went. Big ocean, spawns me in the middle of it. I swam for a while to find a good land mass. I ended up just deleting the world and letting it make a new one.

Second map started me on a small chain of islands but at least there was land near by (well closer) I spent like 30 minutes trying to find coal.

Finally found enough slimes for sticky pistons so I tried my hand at making a Chicken Farm/Automated BBQ on the test server... As Talent and I found out in 1.8 they actually kill each other now if confined in spaces with solid blocks. Looks like fences are the way to go but I haven't tested it yet. I may also try iron bars or glass panes as well. If I can get this thing going with enough eggs dropping it could be a sustainable 1.8 passive-mob farm.

I've also learned that I hate chickens in MC... lol

Oh yeah, it is. But still!!! I want SMALLER!

That's definitely not what she said. heyyooooooo
