The Official Guild Wars 2 thread

The best videos to watch of people that aren't complete idiots, and really the only worthwhile videos so far, are:

TotalBiscuit's Guardian Staff/Hammer Gameplay
Mike B's Mesmer PVP
Mike B's Overview of GW2
*Yogscast Norn [1] [2] [3] [4] // Charr [1] [2] [3]

And then if you're curious about exploration:

Mike B's tour of Divinity Reach (Human city)
Mike B's tour of Black Citadel (Charr city)
Mike B's tour of Hoelbrak (Norn city)
Jumping Puzzle

*The Yogscast ones are probably my favorite. Just two guys experiencing the game together from the start. Entertaining, informative, and funny.

Damnit, I can't wait for this game. Why couldn't WoWTOR have this kind of fidelity in its graphics not to mention interesting pvp and non-instanced stuff? Sorry for bringing in that game, but I am just bitter and canceled my sub to TOR because it's flat out boring when you reach endgame. But GW2 is looking better and better every time I see videos of it. I could never says the same thing about TOR.

Signed up. Really hoping I get in since I couldn't stand SWTOR and WoW is really stale.

I can't speak for this game, but Guild Wars was as instanced as you can get. That's part of how they had such good graphics for the time. The actual areas were small and you were constantly looking at loading screens.

He never mentioned Guild Wars 1, and obviously Guild Wars 2 is much different than the first.

The only instancing that I can think of in GW2 is the personal story, pvp, and dungeons.

I have well over 3000 hours in Guild Wars and I played it since the open beta.

I think the instancing was less about the graphics and more about network bandwidth and server performance.

When you instance everything, you don't have to build monstrous, highly optimized servers to hold hundreds or thousands of players - you can have lots and lots of little servers to run the little instances.

The towns would often have hundreds of people in them for special events and the performance did no seem that bad.

I installed Guild Wars 1 on an SSD which made all zone / instance travel *instant* - meaning the only thing you saw was the screen wipe for maybe a second or less and poof - there you were in the new place. It was surprising how much better that made the game.

I really hope they implement some open world pvp. IMO, it's what made WoW so fun. Especially during release, holy shit was STV amazing.

I didn't play much Guild Wars but this looks incredible. I am a big fan of PvP and the three sides with a huge map and multiple objectives seems great. Doesn't have to be the clumping mess with chokepoints that Alterac Valley in WoW was. STV and Hillsbrad had great open PVP though in the beginning.

Signed up for beta and will most likely buy day 1.

It's rare that I preorder, but it's also rare for me to get excited about a game. Last time in recent memory was for BF3. I'll definitely preorder, and probably whatever collectors edition is available.

Hopefully this isn't a Christmas release....

I sold my collectors edition of the game 2 years ago for over 100 dollars if I remember right. If it comes packed with some exclusives only available for the collectors edition you can expect it to maintain or grow in value.

Yeah, that would be kinda neat, but I'm not sure how they would do it. They've also focused on the social atmosphere and grouping up, so I honestly doubt we'd see anything, as there's only one faction. I love world PVP, and I'm honestly not at all disappointed this doesn't have it. Maybe the PVE looking so good or the WvWvW helps me see past the lack of it.

Yeah, I do love some open world PvP but it just has no place in Guild Wars imo.

THIS.... I've been soaking up the articles and videos about the WvWvW (RVR-style) 3-server PVP and LOVE it... this is looking like it's going to be my vice.

Nothing shows, just blank boxes?

It takes a while to load, and it's getting hammered. Was near 1,000,000 beta signups when I checked last. Probably suprassed that number by now. :(

And they extended the sign up. So their quest for 1 million is eroding our chances of getting in...

Ahhh... is that an official counter from somewhere?

I wonder how many of those are just people with 10 email addresses on the same computer who will get dinged.

Great sign for Arena Net though.

Fuck hate how I just got my computer up and running against about 30 minutes ago and I can't be part of the beta because of it... fuck... off... fucking GPU retard fucking fan...

Question #4:
We all saw that enemy players are currently listed as generic invaders, and some are turned off by that. Will there be a toggle option for showing our name if we want to?
Answer:
There's been a lot of discussion about seeing enemy names in WvW. While I certainly understand the reasoning behind the request to see enemy names, we are fairly firm about not showing names of the opposing teams. I think of it this way, in a war people dont introduce themselves before trying to kill each other. When you are fighting in the mists for your world, you are in the middle of a giant war against two opposing forces who want nothing more than to take everything you own and kill you as many times as they possibly can. That guy who just shot you is not Bob the Engineer, he's the enemy.

Not showing enemy names in WvW also helps players that are less pvp-oriented feel less threatened about venturing into the battle because seeing enemies as anonymous 'invaders' creates a sense that opponents won't be able to recognize them and pick on them because of their lack of skill in a fight, so they in turn feel more embolded to go out and fight in the first place. Not showing names also makes it so people can feel as if they can 'hide' in a fight if need be, but still be around to help out. That's a pretty critical part of making WvW feel more inviting for people that would normally never think about playing PvP in any other game.

We've heard "I usually dont PvP, but I love WvW" again and again from people in our beta, so even though showing names might make for a more competitive pvp environment, we'd much rather create a game that is more welcoming for people that don't normally play the more hardcore PvP games. If you want to see enemy names and get to know the community of people you are fighting against, competitive PvP is the place to get that sort of thing in Guild Wars 2. WvW is the place where you fight with your friends and show your might against a faceless never-ending horde of enemies. It's not about taking names, it's about taking back that tower and claiming it for your guild so it can wave your flag right in the enemies face!

I think this is nicely put.

They really need to turn down the particle effects as they are way overdone. You can't even see what you are attacking most of the time.

Anyone know of some good Guild Wars 2 forums? (i.e. active/decent)

EDIT: Found: Guild Wars 2 Guru.

GW2 still doesn't have a release date right? last I read was a summer release. been watching the beta videos, game looks visually good for a mmo. really looking forward to playing.

That's the one thing I don't get, why do they not have an official forums, etc? For an mmo that seems rather strange, pretty much every mmo has it's own official forums.

Considering the recent sign up had an NDA, I don't think they want people talking about it till they are allowed to.

That bothers me too. Fan sites are always cliquish with poorly chosen moderation staff who put personal agendas above all else.

There is no excuse for a third party dictating whose voices the developers hear.

Well, hopefully they don't browse unofficial forums (at least not seriously) ;) By the time they feel the need to have the kind of communication and feedback that a forum brings, they'll likely set up their own.

They probably will close to launch, but honestly, they're of questionable benefit feedback-wise compared to ingame feedback forms & surveys. Most players never visit, and the ones who do mostly just spread fud and false bad press. Unofficial ones serve the purpose for discussion.

Release is supposedly early summer, for those wondering, though officially it's just 2012.
