The Official Guild Wars 2 thread

Mark Kerstein: So it seems Izzy and Tyler did not sleep at all but defended a keep in WvW for 10h. Madness!"
Don't know who Izzy or Tyler are, but I am definitely jealous of them.

@MMORPGcom: [Bill] Going to bed now. Can't give details of my day. But I can say that you should really believe the hype. @GuildWars2"

@BobbyStein: I will beat that jumping puzzle today. #GW2
Puzzles... Maybe Datacrons in TOR or treasures/puzzles in Rift? Would be neat. Loved doing the treasures and puzzles in Rift.

@Gazimoff (ZAM writer): Been playing #guildwars2 all night and loving it! Now need to go on a quest for sleep...

Mark Kerstein explains how armor repairing/durability works.

Morning.

Let me explain what is actually happening.

Every time you get defeated (so after you have been downed and failed to rally) one piece of your armor gets damaged. Once all your armor pieces are damaged, they will break - and you will have to repair or replace it.

It is very different from a durability system other games use, as you cannot avoid being hit by opponents - but you can avoid getting defeated by skilled play.

So if you never get defeated, you will never have to repair a single piece of armor.

Hope that helps, we have a blogpost about it coming soon that will get into more details.

Downloaded a Youtube downloader extension for Chrome.. Going to download a bunch and go lounge on the couch, heh.

Anyone having these videos take forever to buffer on YouTube? It would almost seem as if YouTube was being slowed down by the influx of GW2 videos, but I doubt it.

Was he playing it on a potato? so much FPS slowdown and jaggies it was unreal, seemed like he was playing at 5-10 fps when he was in the dungeon...

Heh, possibly. I've seen other videos now where the graphics were beautiful.

I'm still looking forward to TB's review of the game. As in, not his wife's, but his.

Looks amazing in every aspect, and could have the best RvRvR since Camelot...and just for the box purchase. I feel like cancelling my other MMO pre-orders now. Cannot wait.

ahh, just read this, which explains it, Beta is beta afterall :)

As much as I would love to be able to plunge right back into the world of Tyria, ArenaNet still has plenty of work ahead of them before Guild Wars 2 is ready for launch.

Specifically they need to iron out the game's performance issues. I played on both my powerful desktop PC and a capable gaming laptop, both of which struggled with the game on anything other higher than the lowest graphics settings. Cranking up the quality resulted in horrid frame rates, and massive world versus world battles between dozens of characters caused both systems to slow to a crawl. ArenaNet just needs to fine tune game's engine, finding the right balance between beauty and playability.

Yeah, Billy Murphy, who did the MMORPG.com review, said in the comments of his review:
It's funny, because at first I had it set on "best performance" by default. It looked fine to me. I played most of the weekend this way at a smooth 80FPS. But then I realized I could tweak it a lot (every option available, including high res textures, AA, etc.). I bumped it up to the best possible looks-wise. Ended up still hovering between 40/60 FPS. Mind you, I have an i5 Sandybridge, 16GB of RAM on Win7 64x, and an nVidia 460gt. Nothing to scoff at. My guess is that most people experiencing performance issues were in largely crowded areas of WvW. Myself? I didn't really ever dip below 40FPS. I loved it.

So yeah, probably just some weird beta-like driver conflicts right now.

Just another comment as I was browsing through them, someone asked him, "This game honestly looks too good to be true. It can't really be that good, can it?" Which then he replied,
I would said the same thing before this weekend. While we only had the first 20 levels and one level 30 dungeon to explore, we also had WvW, competitive PVP, and more. In all, the more I played it, the more my jaw dropped. There's a LOT to love here, and the Dynamic Events system pretty much revolutionizes tradtional hub-based questing by well... doing away with it. That could have been the game's only innovation and I'd have been happy. But there's something new around every corner that makes you go: "Duh! Why didn't other games do this!?"
EDIT: Our access is also over for now, and it makes me very very sad.
Bah, I want this game in my hands. Based on the thread from reddit, the only negative thing about the game we've seen from the press is the FPS-issues. A dude made a throwaway account in that same reddit thread and listed some negatives that he supposedly found in the game. Anybody in the world could have created that post and claimed they were in beta, but it's good to keep in mind. The negatives he did mention seem so minor compared to what this game is bringing to the table anyway, at least in my opinion.

Edit again: I know this is getting lengthy, but Bill Murphy from MMORPG.com has a lot of good information in the comments section of his review.

The exploration is what really caught me off guard. It's amazing. Been a long time since an MMO really 1.) made me want to explore 2.) let me and 3.) rewarded me for it. Explorers will get the most out of this game, as it doesn't hold your hand much other than to occasionally shoot you in the direction of a new event.
I loved exploring in WoW, the first couple years of release. Trying to get into areas I don't belong, I would spend hours doing so. Wall-walking, trying to jump up certain ledges, etc. Just about any MMO where it's possible to explore pointless areas, I would do it. SWTOR really disappointed me in that aspect.

Been watching beta videos from this weekend all morning. So excited about this game. Hoping it can fill the void thattttttt....every MMO since EQ has failed to do. :D

Mark Kerstein on server queues.
Let me explain what an overflow server is and what it does. It is a technology we also use as our version of a queuing system. When a map or a world you want to log into is at capacity limit, the game will ask you if you want to play on an overflow server - so you can actually play while you are in a queue. Once space opens on your world, the game will ask you if you want to join your friends on your world. And you keep all the progress you made while you were playing on the overflow server.
Definitely something swtor could have used, what with their hour long server queues on some servers on release.

Is the level cap 20 like GW 1 ? Or is this much larger like WoW-vanilla or ToR up to like Level 50 - 60 ? Does the game have fun solo PvE, or is it only about PvP and WvW ?

I liked the concept of WarHammer Online, I think at launch was up to level 40, you had a choice of PvE to level up, or the cool RvR stuff running castle sieges and stuff. WAR was great idea on paper, just the game itself was very buggy and unfinished, but if GW 2 is sort of like WAR just better I will be happy.

level cap is 80

i see keys for zoom in and zoom out but no slider as to how far you can 'set' zoom out to be...anyone know or have a video of the farthest zoom out you can go?

Holy cow, had no idea it was up to Level 80, that is quite a departure from GW 1 and happy to see this. Thing I never liked about GW 1 was low level cap and it does don't feel or play like a good PvE MMO that has a high level cap. Hopefully the leveling process is fresh and exciting and truly open world like WoW and no invisible fences like GW 1?

Guild Wars was always heavily PvP focused, it looks like 2 will be a nice balance of both. In any case, the level curve in GW2 tapers off at level 20 (or so I heard) so it'll be the same amount of experience for each level after 20.

Jeez, this game is going to be killer. I cannot wait. Fuck Diablo 3, this is where it's at this year.

Another MMO to look forward to. I might try this game and forget about TERA or D3.

Yep. I was super excited about Tera until I saw some of the recent player-posted videos on Youtube. It doesn't look ANYTHING like the Korean version as far as texturing goes. Graphics are important these days!

They wanted to test something regarding textures with the first closed beta, but it didn't work out, which is why the textures were lower quality.

If you mean the censoring, you'll probably be able to mod that yourself post release like the other Korean games that get censored over here.

Nope, I wasn't talking about censorship. Just texture/graphics quality. I don't understand why they would have needed to decrease visual quality for a change of market...

I liked the 1st one a lot, played quite a bit of it (too much). This one looks to be better in every single possible way. I dont think I will pick it up though. I already went through a few MMO addictions in my mid 20s and I dont think I can suffer another one at 30 :(.

The first weekend beta didn't have high end textures.

It wasn't because of the different market. They apparently wanted to test a different form of texture compression (or something else, can't remember) to get the client size down, but it didn't work out and they did not have enough time to revert before the first CB.

For instance if you update the client, which you can do even if you aren't in CB2, it will download a 5gb+ texture patch now making the total install size 20gb+.

Nothing's ever as good as the first. Being in a 3D world with thousands of other people was pretty much fresh and new when EQ came out. That novelty allowed us to overlook a lot of flaws, and left us with some amazing memories.

I gave up a long time ago on the idea that I'll ever be as excited about an MMO as I was my first day with EQ.

Even though I never got too far in EQ, I still remember it fondly. I was the first Iskar on Fenin Ro with the expansion, was in a fun guild and had lots of memorable corpse runs/trains and other things you don't really have anymore in current mmo's.

Still, I didn't think it compared to the fun in UO, I played both around the same time frame and had more fun with UO, mainly because UO felt like what an mmo ought to feel like , it was a lot more social of a game to me then EQ was, people took the role of their characters, good, bad, in between, it just felt more like what you would picture if you allowe dpeople to rp in an open world.

It's a shame, but you get neither experiences these days, UO died off with the tram/felcuia split, EQ's formula was taken by many mmo's but it's been diluated/changed in so many casual ways now.

The late 90's was a great memorable window for gaming and my personal favorite era in game, 95-2000, so many great games/innovations (mmo's, HL, mods/etc).

Excellent.

I think I am going to lift my MMO moratorium for GW2. I have so little time to invest but it's F2P so why the heck not ... it looks like an excellent game.

Same. Pick it up when I want to play, put it down when I don't.

I'll buy the game when it comes out, and I'll buy the expansions if they're available by the time I'm done with the main game. Even paying full price for a game and two expansions, 3x $50 is about what a year of WoW costs.

And if GW1 was any indicator, we'll get a lot of content for our money.

Yep, it's truly open like WoW was/is. You can jump in GW2 and climb the highest of mountains (it's been reported you can climb this). Leveling is a lot different than any mainstream MMO out there currently. Leveling in GW2 consists of Dynamic Events like Warhammer or Rift had. You just run around exploring and suddenly you'll run into a town being taken over and you can help to save it. To make sure you're not without any direction though, there are NPCs called Hearts and Scouts that will put some events on your map. Your level will scale down to zones as well, so if you don't like a particular zone for any reason, you could for example go back to any zone (even if its lower) and it'll scale you down, but you'll still gain experience. Of course with the dynamic events, the same quests you did last time will probably be different.

This guy says it best regarding kill quests.
Well, what's worse than simple kill quests, is kill quests that don't seem to matter. A villager with an exclamation mark above their head tells you "Our village is under attack by Goblins! Would you please kill 10 Goblins! I beg of you!"

Why 10 Goblins? Why not all of them. And should I only kill the Goblins? They're attacking the village, why not help the wounded villagers? Is that not okay? Nope, quest says 10 Goblins. You can't help those people in any other way.

Actually, there probably won't even be any wounded villagers in a standard MMO, and the Goblins will be standing around, just chilling...

That's the main thing the dynamic quests system sets out to fix, the fact that there's no consequences, not the fact that the tasks are mundane.

Apparently in the WvWvW, enemies show up as [Color] Invader. Not sure that I like that, but I also didn't play DAOC, where apparently it was like that. I guess it wouldn't matter too much since the enemies will be on different servers and you probably won't ever talk to them again. I'd still like to feel they're an actual person rather than an NPC though.

I'm usually a pretty big cynic and skeptic when it comes to MMO's these days but this REALLY has my interest.
