The Nintendo Switch 2 Thread

$500 for the new Mario Kart? Hmmmm, the drive everywhere seems like a stupid thing to tout as a feature for the game, who cares? $80 for the game by itself? Does this mean other first party games are going to be a major gouge too? The Mario Kart formula hasn't changed really ever, as tempting as the idea of a new Mario Kart is having been a decade since a new entry, I'm not really sure if it's actually worth anything more than being a graphically updated entry with a few new courses.

IMHO most boring launch with the insane hunt after emulation makes them appear super insecure about other platforms. I think Valve & other PC handhelds are beyond reach as far as versatility goes.

This may be the most lame console launch in Nintendo’s history, frankly. I don’t have a scintilla of excitement and I’ve had every console since like 1986. I do not believe this will he the same kind of success that Switch was.

I mean, I never even heard about this one, but seems like it was probably lame? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pokémon_Mini it looks like Nintendo wanted to compete with playing games on a Dreamcast VMU and there's the Virtual Boy.

I’ll likely wait to buy since Prime 4 will play on the switch and I refuse to pay even more money to play it on switch 2. Besides, Prime remastered looks amazing on the switch, and Prime 4 basically has the same fidelity. The Zelda games the upgrade packs are free if you subscribe to the expansion pack stuff, so that’s not bad.

With GameCube games being added I think the expansion pack is an even better deal now

Most games were going to move to this new cost given what’s going on with the tariff situation. Nintendo was playing it safe by announcing these prices now given we now have a base flat 10% tariff on everything plus whatever additional for the country of origin. Shit is going to get very expensive.

The first party stuff was meh. I could barely see the upgrade in graphics in Mario Kart and Donkey Kong looks like last gen fare.

I think this is sort of a situation like the Dead Or Alive fighting games. Where each new version has a very similar art style. But, there are tons of refinements.

The karts and character models are more detailed and with smoother edges. Tires look properly round, etc. Animations are smoother and more detailed. Texture detail is a lot higher.

its also now open-world. Which may make it play at times, sort of like Diddy Kong Racing, on N64. Which could be really fun.

Additionally, they are under pressure to support much higher resolutions than before. Which is going to put a lot more straing on balancing obvious visual improvements with raw output resolution.
Its assumed that some for of DLSS may be used. But even that will still add extra demand on bandwidth, etc.

PS5 experienced the same situation. The new hardware should be able to produce obviously better visuals-----if we were still targeting 1080p. But, not that 4K is the living room standard, it puts a lot of strain on hardware which was never meant for it.

I am also not convinced Metroid Prime 4 needs the upgrade. Mouse control is nice, but that type of precision is hardly necessary when you can lock on. Also, based on the way Metroid Prime Remastered performs on the current console, I would be fine playing Prime 4 on the OLED Switch.
Metroid is going to be great with mouse-like controls.

Metroid Prime: Hunters on DS with its touchscreen + thumb-nub controls, was awesome. And that game was pretty much Quake meets Metroid. The multiplayer was awesome.

Quite a weak launch title list. The new FromSoft IP, The Duskbloods, might draw some people though whenever it launches.
The actual launch is solid, with a new Mario Kart, and strong 3rd party support via ports of good games.
And Nintendo's online subscription is expanded with Gamecube games. To include the Gamecube version of Soulcalibur II, which has never been playable outside of the Gamecube. Pretty big deal for the Fight Game Community.

However, the best stuff is a little later, for Summer/Fall 2025.
And announcing an exclusive Fromsoftware game directed by Miyazaki, which wasn't leaked: is a HUGE reveal.

The new Donkey Kong was game of the show, IMO. Too bad its not a literal launch title.

Tony Hawk remasters on Switch 2 will be an awesome way to play those games. I loved Tony Hawk on GBA.

-------------------------

However, the whole thing is blunted by the price. Way too high, IMO.

Nintendo needs to get a Switch 2 Lite out ASAP and subsidize the price down to $300 and eat profits, if needed.

Still has physical copies Switch 2 so this guy has something to live for.

This system is good marketing if anything we'll give you something you don't want then make you upgrade in four years to an OLED screen and better joycon colors and better game selection. I wonder if was a Heat issue with the OLED version and higher refresh. I can tell you Tomb Raider looks perfect on my OLED switch that game is 30 years old.

Steam Deck is 90hz OLED version while the LCD is 60hz but both run at lower odd rezes.

its pretty crappy the switch 2 game carts don't even contain the game data. They are just a key that allows you to download it. I'll pass.

470 euros for the version without the game, 510 with the game, and possibly more depending on the country, this is for real players, the games are supposedly 80-90 euros each
I'm only interested in the lego gameboy, if it would be good, good games and if it's not too expensive, and if it doesn't have any additional unnecessary options like screen recording and the like, but they're still silent about it

$90 for a physical game is crazy work but I suspect Nintendo fan boys will buy em anyway.
Another one is $70 for the game (Donkey Kong) so who knows if it's a normal thing or not. I'll get stuff on sale like always.

for physical, do you mean because it will be a small game that fit on a micro sd card ?

Considering the hard drive capacity, I would not imagine the digital only game to be vastly bigger.

Well yeah cause then they'd have to mark down the first Switch and its games right? I'm guessing Switch and Switch 2 will run in parallel for a little while. Nintendo prices things like Apple does. No sale for you! I don't expect they'll mark the Switch/Switch OLED down at all. Which would explain the price bump.

They just had a big holiday sale a couple of months ago with them at $225 for the LCD version including a copy of Mario Kart 8 deluxe. The oled one was $275 including mk8. That was probably their last big clearance sale for the switch 1.

There were also a lot of game discounts at that time, but I didn't stock up because backwards compatibility wasn't 100% confirmed yet at that point.

I get a bit the deception about the game and hardware price...

But there is something neat (and the alternative are not always what we like) to what seem a really close to old school, pay and buy your actual stuff, the company make an actual profit selling it to you clear relationship.

Does not need (maybe will a little bit, but it is not existential) to push DLC, monthly fee to make this work, kids as a limited amount of game they cherish and dreamt for months of getting racking up different "income" and make deal to combine different gift together instead of a Netflix frozen of too many choice of mountains of cheap game (free game with Epic) we build and never play. The fact they keep price up, instead of going of that bit of strange situation where just wait 2 months and it will be less than half price making the launch experience a guilty purchase.

Parents could love the added amount of easy avatar-voice connection here.

With games costing upwards of $80-90, the bundle that includes Mario Kart World is a solid deal if you plan to get that game anyway. Hopefully I can get a pre-order in next week and lock one down.
If I do, I'm probably going to take 6/6 off of work and plan to Kart all day.

Easily my favorite aspect of the switch experience is being able to say "launch game anyway" and put off updates.

Nothing like have 15 minutes to play something every once in a while to just loose all of it to a required system and/or game updates.

Hopefully that's something they keep on this one.

I'm not sure how I feel about the "key" carts as being able to just play or pass games between kids were the only reasons to buy physical games on the switch. I suppose it'll only be an issue if it's something they opt to do a lot.
