The next NFS installment: Shift

Oh, I see you are using the "gamepad" profile, it seems that they remove/add mapping options depending on the profile you choose.... which is a weird way of doing it.

If you choose a wheel profile, (5 or 6) there is the gears and the clutch in the list.

(I had not noticed that they added and removed buttons to map depending on the profile)

EDIT: What wheel BTW?

hmm. I have no idea why it set it as a gamepad profile. I also have no idea how to change it back.

I am using a Logitech G25 wheel. I think ill just stop trying to fix it and just reinstall the game.
I need clutch and H-shifter support!

top right of the sreen,

Profile : 1,

you should be able to go through alot of profiles by using left and right arrows on keyboard.

You want profile 6 for your G25.

Can anyone confirm the graphic quality? Are they just "ok"? The screen shots look awesome. I guess my confusion is while the screen shots look fantastic this reviewer thought the game should have looked better.

A snipet from the conclusion

"The graphics were a let down overall. They're very detailed for the most part and clean, but the lack of HDR means the whole thing looks too clean and sterile with a need for heavy AA so it doesn't look awful. We've found HDR, while often a little too heavy, can give cars and the track in general a much more pleasing look with some definite wow factor thrown in too. Shift is detailed but there's more to a great looking game than just detail and motion blur."

but I guess the important part is:

"For all its confusion and negative points though, Shift did keep us coming back for more. Upgrading in particular is quite addictive, especially as you see your showroom car go from a tame poodle to a raging, body kit-clad twin turbo pit bull. Once you get into the stride of the game, things get better and become less of a grind. More importantly they get more rewarding and enjoyable and with the addition of an enjoyable multiplayer mode, Shift is almost certainly a sound, if not a classic purchase for racing fans."

Hmmm, I think that last sentence has me sold. :D

"

I don't like it, NFS has always an Arcade Racer, this is to much a Racing Sim for my likeing.

No it hasn't. The first wasn't. Porsche unleashed wasn't. Thank goodness it's gone from the ridiculous fast and furious, racing on ice crap back to it's roots. The ricer influenced and retard physics of the middle nfs were a plague to any self respecting race fan. I hope they continue in this direction and focus on multiplayer, perhaps even adding cops or missions ala Hot pursuit/ Porsche unleashed.

Look at my sig.

Now consider I really liked Crysis.

Now consider that I think NFS Shift looks really good graphically.

:)

This game is fun that I might buy it for the PS3 as well :)

Oh and I LOVE the GT-R in this game :D

someone just told me this game only has WINDOWED widescreen support...

someone tell me this isnt true?
Yes, True. I was messing around with settings and all of a sudden I was in windowed mode.

this is not true, playing 16:9 full screen...
Wrong, it worked in windowed mode for me.

Try the demo, but yes graphics are very very nice. Though the bit about the engine not having a lot of hdr is sorta true.

About the lack of testing cars once you upgraded them and made adjustments...

You can set a quick race to whatever track you want during any of the three times of day with how ever many laps you want (from 1-20) while racing against 0-15 opponents. So you basically can test your setups by making a race with only you. Oh and once you "win" you get $4000.00 to your pot. ;)

I have the retail version of since tuesday and have been playing every night. I was running 186.19 drivers and just installed the latest 190.62's tonight and went to reinstall nvidia sli profile patch ( i had the patch installed with my old driver install and had a profile and use of SLI in shift) but it won't install this time and as a result I have no SLI profile for NFS shift. I have rebooted etc still no dice. Also the game running on 1 gtx 260 has more noticeable stutttering(hitching) that it did on the old drivers with or without SLI. WTF? I'm a lil annoyed atm i was looking foward to playing again tonight.

Only reason i installed the newest drivers is because I had the dreaded NVLdkkm BSOD just after finishing a race earlier tonight and figured I might as well install the latest. Heh. I usually don't have any problems with running any games on this rig but right now I'm feeling a lil pissed...grrr.

Where did you hear it only has windowed widescreen support? That's not correct, it runs in full screen 1920x1200 for me on Win 7.

Tried the demo and so far I like it. However, its another NFS that has that overdone 'bloom' (or hdr, or whatever it's called) effect, which has been lingering around since NFS:MW. It looks like someone came along and smeared Vaseline all over my screen. Annoying!

Have you seen Grid? I think Grid has more overdone HDR effects in it than NFS:Shift. I've played it with it all off but it looks better with it on, especially the night Tokyo street track.

OH thank you so much.
Holy crap this game is amazing. Clutch, H shifter. and FFB is like a match made in heaven for this game. Nordschleife is just absolutely brilliant.

You can really feel the bumps and dips in the road in turns. Makes lots of under steer during high speed cornering. intense

Is it just me or do the cars handle like they're on ice? I mean, I can't even adjust the steering without the car spinning out of control. Even slight braking does it.

Was fullscreen for me, 1920x1200.

yeah grid is horrrrrrible compared to shift. I actually thougth Shift wsa a breath of fresh air with finally some normal colors on the screen and not the bloomed out dirt/grid brown over everything.

Played through the demo last night. It is one of the best NFS games in a long time. Although I would have liked to see the same semi-sim approach on some open road environments with traffic (similar to NFS:pU or NFS3). For a non-sim game the physics are pretty-good. It runs fairly smoothly with everything cranked up as well. It is a nice looking game. I must admit I am spoiled by the physics and force feedback quality in iRacing (yeah it is a simulator not a semi-sim, I know), but NFS does ok in this regard and will be worth buying for the nights where I just don't feel like driving a full on sim. The full versions car selection certaintly has something going for it!

The cars definate seem to be designed to have a bit of excessive but controllable "drifting" to them which can be fun if not entirely accurate. There is a big exagerated bias towards understeer on throttle when you have traction, and a very strong oversteer bias underbraking. Each car is different but all (at least the ones in the demo) seem to exhibit this to some degree. The sense of speed is heavily exaggerated for the sake of entertainment, but since this is a NFS it is something that can be forgiven. The AI even on hard is better than your typical NFS AI, but still does some pretty boneheading things.

Based off of the demo I give it a 9/10 as a semi-sim game. The driving dynamics however are not sim quality (not nearly to the level of LFS, GTR2, iRacing, etc).

I agree with you on the color pallet, but as far as car damage and the way it affects your driving and total realism for a simi-sim , in my opinion GRID beats Shift. I like both equally though, Shift is refreshing and its one of the best need for speed games I have played in a long time.

Now we wait for GRID 2. :)

Playing this game really makes me wish I owned a decent force feedback wheel ...

Is anyone using the Xbox360 wheel on pc? What % of steering/ acceleration/ braking deadzone is the best?

Most of the time for a wheel you want:

Deadzones@0
Sensitivities@50% (to have the input act linearly with the output)
Steering Speed sensitivity@0 (again to keep the 1:1 relationship so it doesn't feel like the wheel is disconected from the car)

Steering Lock@100%

I just checked and the wheel is supposed to have 270 degrees which is good for this game, it's the number of degrees which seem to give the most responsive wheel input for me.

AMEN BROTHER! This is the most accurate description of the past few NFS releases I have read.
Hot pursuit mode should have been in EVERY NFS release!

Memo for EA:

Drift is fucking retarded and whoever thought it was a good idea to make it mandatory in the career is a fucking moron.

anyone having trouble with the game crashing? i have updated my ati drivers (although in dxdiag it says my version is 8.14 and ati website says the file i am downloading is 9.9) i dunno if this may have something to do with it or not. but i was able to run through the test lap and race before it started crashing on me

I tried out the demo for this...and despite tweaking of any and all settings it just felt wrong wrong wrong with my wheel (logitech momo). The cars felt too floaty, they overcorrected despite any sensitivity setting, and just generally handled unbelievably fake. Now this was with all aids disabled and on the hard opponent difficulty. I turned all aids back on and decided to give it a try, and then it was at least driveable, but way way way too arcadeish in nature, and it didnt even feel like a good arcade type of racing to me.

this definitely cant be put on the level of realism in my opinion...i dont know if its the game physics as a whole, or just another case of shitty support for pc despite having the wheel settings preprogrammed.

Its a shame gran turismo style handling and upgrade systems will probably never ever see PC. it seems thats the missing game in my racing library.

I also thought that maybe i just sucked at road racing, so i fired up the race07 demo i downloaded forever ago. I had far more fun playing that than I did shift, and I think i may buy the race 07 / gtr evolution combo pack off steam...$20 less and much more fun for my type of racing preference...

once again, disappointed in a NFS game :(

so much for driving the cobalt SS lol

you sound like you need to try www.iracing.com :)

lol, i have tried iracing - but i havent made the plunge to pay monthly just yet. i'm constantly thinking more and more I need to do just that though lol. i have a friend who has iracing and loves it - but calculating what it costs over the course of a couple months is kind of daunting as a student...i know id get hooked and get my moneys "worth" out of it...its just a bit much to spend despite...

for now, nr2003 season is STILL keeping me content for short track and left turn racing - and i think gtr might patch up that road course urge for a while. I was just hoping shift would be a fun enough game with lots of silly (but practical / realistic!) upgrading to be done. If youre a huge sim fan though...it just wont cut it :(

i am wondering if the ps3 verison is good
i tried the pc demo it looked nice but i would really like to play this on my couch
