The next NFS installment: Shift

Ya the 191.00's are pretty good drivers overall. I do have a small issue with cod4 that was never present before th 190 series drivers (namely 190.64 and now 191.00). At the start of a new round I get some hitching and stuttering with what seems like lag but isn't. After about 1-2 mins it stops and then only comes back here and there randomly. I've read over at guru some other folks having the same issue. Overall tho they are good drivers. I suspect the issue I'm seeing is related to nvidias new adapative power cycling mode which is still a new feature. You can try 191.03 also if you want I hear those are about the same as 191.03.

Can't get Shift to play on my AMD system.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Shift PC demo will always crash to desktop after the the intro movies play, and right before the race should begin. Note, my system runs all my apps and latest games stable.

Tried everything suggested in the EA NFS forums except changing my PhysX verson. Right now I have the PhysX version included with the latest Nvidia 190.62 drivers (9.09.0814) But the version offered in the demo setup folder is ver 9.09.0720, which is older, i would think. Should I try rolling back my Physx driver to match what came with the demo? Is it wise to do so?

If PhysX is not the issue, does anyone know if my system configuation is simply not friendly to this game? I tried all this advice at the EA nfs tech support forum such as deleting the graphicsconfig file in mydocuments, and also tried using someone's suggested graphicsconfig file. Did all the usual stuff like shutting down running programs, disbaling anti virus, bla bla. I've installed the latest sli patches from nvidia and evga. I tried running in win98/me compatability mode, which EA tech support says might work, but nothing has got this game to play one bit.

winxp sp3
amd opteron 185 dual core
asus a8n-e sli
2x8800 gts 320
2 gigs corsair xms ddr

BestBuy has this on sale for $40 for the Xbox. I was thinking of picking this up until I read that the difficulty is similar to that of GT Legends, on the PC, all those years ago. Is it really that painful in the later cars / tracks?

Not even close to GT Legends as far as difficulty goes. I mean, lightyears away.

Have you changed your graphics settings at all?
If so, go to your my documents/shift/
and delete the graphicwhatever.xml.

I had this problem and as long as i dont change resolution or detail settings its fine.

well I was loving this game until you get to the nfs live tour thingy.. its completely unraceable, the ai CONSTANTLY just smash into you, going around a corner and wham in the rear end etc.. completely took all the joy I had out of the game.

I changed the AI from Hard to Easy after one race of the live tour before they made me completely mad lol...

Hello everyone! I have been playing shift for a few days and I'm having issues with just a few problems. The biggest is my inability to drive any rear wheeled high powered car with my wheel, it just seems to spinout at the slightest touch. Anyone got an suggestions? or hints?

Don't pirate? J/K!!! It just sounds like something they would do to annoy the "pirates". If you use a pad, do you have the same problem? Unless your throttle settings are messed up, you shouldn't have any issues. Are you running the game with all assists off? I haven't tried it with them off but I know that in other racing games, proper acceleration with the beefier rear wheel drive cars was a little more difficult when traction/stability control wasn't enabled.

After about 6 hours straight of NFS: Shift on my PC with my G25 @ a resolution of 1920x1080 on my 47" HDTV and a beer in the cupholder... wow.

For time trialing, I can rock 8xAA with maximum detail settings and the frame rate, measured with FRAPS, ranges from 75-125. Awesome. Nordschleife has never looked so good in a videogame. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for when other cars are on the track. I'm forced to turn down the AA and set the track detail settings to 'medium' in order to maintain a solid frame rate while racing against a full field of opponents. I kind of expected to have to do that though, since I'm only running a single 4890 1GB graphics card. All four cores of my quad are being utilized.

The handling seems pretty good to me, pro settings with no assists. It took me a few races to get the hang of it, but once you figure out your car's braking threshold, everything seems to click. I find the cars to be a little bit twitchy, personally, but a FWD car certainly feels like a FWD car and the same can be said for AWD and RWD rides. The e46 M3, for example, gives a really satisfying little tail snap as you jump on the throttle while rounding the apex.

I have yet to jump online. I've progressed into tier 2 events in Career mode and just can't seem to get tired of time-trialing Nordschleife via the Quick Race option; which incidentally happens to be an awesome spot to rack up profile points to level up your driver and rake in some cash for upgrades.

The sound... out of this world. The whine of the supercharger in the Cobalt SS is just phenominal and the hiss of the turbo in the e46 is spot on. You can definitely sense the VTEC kick in, yo, when ramping up the RPM's on the Civic Si. If you're not rocking some 5.1/7.1/9.1 speakers, you're truly missing out. I'm sure my neighbors are a little upset with me at the moment.

I'm having a hard time finding anything negative to say about this game. It's fantastic and an absolute treat for any wheel owner.

BUY IT!

What AA Technique are you using in CCC?
Im using 8xAA (Edge Detect) and 16x Anisotropic and I'm getting around 22-35FPS at 1080p w/ my 4890 (960/1100) + Q9550@3.4Ghz
Everything else in CCC and NFS:Shift is on max quality.

Why am I getting such low FPS?.. because of Edge detect?

Edit: Selecting Box as AA Method w/ 4xAA does bring up the minimum fps to 30.
@snaggletooth - how are you getting such high FPS? HAve you enabled Catalyst A.I. or something?

Has anyone had a problem with not seeing the LAN option after patching the game? I have two copies of Shift and one copy works perfectly, and the other will not show LAN so my daughter and I can race.

Is this game still locked at a max 1920x1200 for the PC like all its predecessors? The graphics still look, no offense to console owners, ported.

No its not locked, I have a 30 inch monitor and am playing at its native res.

Awesome, thanks for the quick reply. How are you liking it so far? I never finished NFS: Pro Street (hated the drifting), but I'd like a good reason to dust of my G25.

I really enjoy it, its like PS but without the funless factor of it. I was able to drift in PS ok.

Has anyone noticed very irritating lag spikes when crashing, or when other cars are crashing into each other nearby? It pretty much makes the game unplayable for me. When there is no crashing going on it runs smooth as butter. I suppose if there was SLI support for the game then it wouldnt be an issue.

Try clocking your CPU.
I'm using an E8400@4.1GHz with a GTX260 (no overclock) and its smooth as butter with very tiny judder occasionally when there is lots of action, nothing game stopping.
All graphics options set to max at 1080p except blur is medium, 4xAA, Vsync on 191.03 driver.
I just did a Rivatuner FPS capture and for a split moment it hit 23fps and for a short while was around 40fps but it is mostly hugging the 60fps line.

I fixed my patching issue I installed both patches and had to copy the .exe over from my working PC.

Hey, I'm using all application settings, the highest available @ 1920x1080. 4890 @ 950/1100, Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz.

Like I mentioned in my original post, those high FPS readings were only from racing time trial and were actually from the 'Ring. I suppose I should revise my claims since other tracks can bog down to 25FPS even while just time trialing, same while racing with other drivers.

I back down my settings to NO AA, medium on car and track detail, keeps everything above 30FPS all the time.

I actually haven't played it in a little while, hoping for some patches from EA to fix some of the brutal bugs and some driver optimization from ATI.

This game really wowed me at first, but I think it had more to do with the fact that I have never seen a version of the Nurburgring look so damn good. I can't wait to try some of the mods that are coming out, once they mature a little bit that is.

95% of online gamers cannot race clean at all! i like doing the driver duels but EVERYONE tries to wreck you to get ahead. its so blatant its ridiculous! ive actually had to plan my braking just so i can swerve out of the way from the guy flying up behind...

i wish EA put some sort of ghost mode on here so you couldnt wreck the other people. its basically a time trial but u can still see the competitor and everyone races at the same time.

im very glad i renewed my iracing subscription. at least assholes dont wreck you purposefully on there.

Haha yea that or leave before they get their asses handed to them.

I really need to get a gamepad or wheel, i hate playing on the keyboard. I am loving the game lan is pretty fun with friends over.

Yeah and I hate how the EA Messenger friends system does not work AT ALL.

I've moved on to Race On and I like it much better. 25 players racing online and the Formula cars are mad fun!

Turn off the "AUTO STABILITY CONTROL" assist in your steering settings. This improved the game a million times over for me as I had the same issue with my 360 pad where I could only move the stick a scrap before it would just slide/spinout. I don't know why that option was ever put into the game , let alone enabled.

Just loaded this game up. Seem to be getting low fps. On the initial test lap i get around 50 fps (using fraps). But when the real racing starts, I get like 25 fps average with spikes to like 45. I am using windows 7 32bit, core duo 6850 @3.6 ghz, 2gig ddr 800 @800 on a 680i mobo. Video card is an Asus 5850 clocked to 980 cor/1200 mem. Playing at 1920 by 1080 res 4x AA 16AF with everything maxed. This is the first game that has ran slow for me. Tried countless others and they all run around or above 60fps. Vantage scores 16200 GPU score. Is this game severely CPU bottlenecked? Or am i doing something wrong? Just seems to be real slow on the new vid card. Any input is appreciated. THanks forum.

Really? I thought the tour was pretty easy compared to the rest of the game

from previous replies in this thread i have gathered that this game doesnt run that well on ATI video cards...

im running at 2304x1440 with 4xAA/16xAF on a 285gtx being pushed by an e8400 at 3.83ghz and dont have any hiccups. fps ranges from 40-60...

i have everything maxed and motion blur turned off.

The default settings in this game are BS.

1. Turn off stability control
2. change the tuning mode to basic, then set your car to maximum oversteer (that is not a typo)
3. set downforce to maximum

in the game options there are also several options for customizing sensitivity and deadzones for steering and throttle. I recommend playing with these a lot as well. I don't have a wheel so I cannot be sure of what to recommend here, but I'm pretty sure turning the throttle sensitivity down to like 3% is a universal must.

2560x1600 here on a 5870, about the same FPS range (45-65) at 1ghz core/1220 memory, but with 8x AA including multisampling transparency, as well as medium motion blur. I'm on the 9.11 beta4 drivers, works well for me :). So, given the higher res and drivers that ATI has said they're working to improve for this game, I'd say it performs plenty fine.

Do those 9.11 betas work for 4890's as well? The 9.10 officials don't help Shift at all.

Maybe I'll check into that tonight when I get home from work.

Not sure, but the 9.10's gave me a definite improvement, while the 9.11's gave me a bit more even still. I'm on a 5870 though as I said, so it could be an architectural optimization from the drivers.

I can't see this game being more graphically intensive than Dirt or Grid. Seems like a lot of power is lost in the programming with ATI cards..
