The next NFS installment: Shift

Im not sure how you guys are playing this but ive gotten to the point of frustration using mouse/keyboard for racing, the cars are becoming very difficult to control, for instance viper vs ford gt challange took me about 15 retries to win, veyron challange i just cant do using the keyboard

mess with the deadzones and crap.. i had to set my steering deadzone to 25% because the cars lose traction like they are on ice.. but after playing this game for about 2 hours.. it completely feels like forza 2 with a little bit better graphics on the cars..

You really should get a gamepad at the very least.

I have mixed feelings myself on this game. It kind of feels like they were going to build a GT5 killer and then fell short of implementing the car dynamics/physics. It also felt like they were going to implement a livery/career scheme ala GRID, but also fell short. Graphics-wise I was kind of disappointed on the console. I don't know.. I was expecting them to be on par with GRID at the very least.

It is way to easy to make cash and buy the best tier car and max it out. It's a good racing sim, but felt weak in certain areas.

I do like to momentum effects of the cockpit and the point/leveling system. Very unique. While there aren't a lot of cars, all the main ones are in there with a few surprises without the game feeling like Gran Skyline.

As for any storyboarding, there is none. At least with prostreet, you felt like you were moving up on the circut and not just mindlessly checking races off your list.

At least they implemented a race replay feature. You can tell it's (again) not a full featured module, however it does do enough to let me see my powersliding through a corner or kicking out the rear on a hairpin curve.

The game hasn't pushed boundries in any category, but it is fun to play. I'd personally give it a 7/10 from a racing sim perspective, which is what it looks like this title was being targeted at.

I haven't tested the online content, but I should have a chance once I test out my G25 steering wheel.

All Good points. This is afterall an EA. I expect all those things to be in the third sequel.

I don't blame EA at all on this one. They could not afford to "screw this one up." Overall you get the sense that they played it safe going with a good developer that will get the job done right, instead of a high-priced developement team that wants to put in all the fancy at the cost of stability.

Oh, and for the first time, no apparent glitches so far after 10 hours of playing. (PS3) I am shocked and amazed.

Dam, so no story at all?, just go run races and win cash? that's it?

I liked Most Wanted, with the cutscenes, then going into the driving, that was cool.

Sounds like it will get boring quick.

Call me crazy but, I play racing games for the racing.
Exactly. I like what they did with this game, it's about the racing and that's it. I'm going to really get into this game over the weekend. I risk going to bed late every time I load the game up.

The cut scenes and so-called stories were a joke in these games. At their best it was always about the gameplay and the scenarios out on the road.

Actually the NFS games have always worked well on PC. (Assuming you like the games of course.) I have Need For Speed: Most Wanted on the PC and it was just as solid and well done as the console versions. It ran great and looked great at 2560x1600. I hooked up the XBOX 360 wirelss controller to my system and the game was virtually indistinguishable from the console version excluding the fact that the PC version looked much better at the settings I was using.

Haha, the plot in a racing game. :)

So it really doesn't suck then? Is there a demo?

I heard that a demo was coming either later this month or in a month, I'm not too sure, but there will be one.

Yeah I remember checking to see if there was a demo a few days ago and found this.

The demo is currently due for release sometime before the end of September or the beginning of October, according to what an EA rep told Big Download today. The rep also told us the demo will have two tracks (London River and Spa Francrorchamps) and four cars (Viper, Lotus, BMW M3 and Nissan R35). If you happen to collect all ten of the game's driver badges you will gain access to a fifth car, the Zonda, to drive in the demo.

I'll wait and try the demo before I decide to buy it as I'm really low on funds to spend on games.

Got around to playing it some, I'm definitely going to pick up a wheel/pedal set before I play it anymore.

Trying to use a keyboard = epic fail.

Another thing. Please tell me that this is not another PC title that's going to fall victim to the current trend of no AA.

It really had better not. Whether these idiot lazy game devs know it or not, at least let us have the ability to have 2x AA. I literally can't play stand to play a game without AA; I get headaches.

Most of the time the lack of AA is a technical issue with dx9 and their game engine, not the developers being lazy about it. I guess you could argue that no dx10 would be a "lazy" decision, but taking the time for devs to optimize the game for PC takes more resources than they are willing to take.

Read the thread.

2560x1600 is a definate YES! It auto configures for it too. I'm running at max settings and 4xAA and it plays pretty smooth. There is some minor frame skipping during replays but I haven't noticed any during racing.

After about 6 hours straight of NFS: Shift on my PC with my G25 @ a resolution of 1920x1080 on my 47" HDTV and a beer in the cupholder... wow.

For time trialing, I can rock 8xAA with maximum detail settings and the frame rate, measured with FRAPS, ranges from 75-125. Awesome. Nordschleife has never looked so good in a videogame. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for when other cars are on the track. I'm forced to turn down the AA and set the track detail settings to 'medium' in order to maintain a solid frame rate while racing against a full field of opponents. I kind of expected to have to do that though, since I'm only running a single 4890 1GB graphics card. All four cores of my quad are being utilized.
<snip>

What settings are people using with the wheel? How many degrees of rotation?
I originally started out using 900 degree's but that became a paint really quick.
This game is more on the arcade style with wheels turning.

Right now I think I am using 300 degree rotation on my g25

Another this I really dont get is that they have an option to turn on/off automatic clutch...
But there is no freaking option to set an axis, button, or key as the clutch. Pretty weird

Why include and option to disable it if you are not going to offer a button for us to assign it to...

Clutch pedal does nothing btw.

Right now I have 270º steering lock with

Deadzones ALL @ 0%
Steering Sens. @ 100%
Speed Sens. @ 100%
Break/Accel @ 0%
Steering lock @ 100%

Maybe I should increase break sensitivity?

Lies, and more lies :p

The Previous NFS games were a shambles on the PC, need for speed most wanted wouldn't even use 2560x1600 so I don't know how you're doing that without a hack, I've played that through several times on my 2560x1600 screen and the max res supported was something like 1280x800, oh and widescreen is vert-

Actually it breaks the trend of pretty useless PC implementations which EA had produced before, it supports all the way up to 2560x1600 with a whole host of options including AA options.

I'll test the game tonight and add a profile to my site www.pcgamingstandards.com which will list AA/AF compatability, Vysnc/Alt Tab, widescreen and all the resolutions :)

Clutch Pedal works for me. It's the last line in the controls menu.

Winning races on Pro setting with Hard AI is a bit difficult with just two laps....

You know what I love? Those AI f**s who make it their life's mission to crash into me like some fucking kamikaze yet break to a halt to avoid collision with other AI drivers

I had to go down to medium AI after tier 2, restarting the races 3-4 times got long lol. I was also working up a sweat trying to be first.

It's becoming incredibly frustrating playing at Hard with Pro settings and no assistances. Mostly because of the AI's increasing low blows. There's no point in being nice, they ruin the race for you.

I think rewarding players for being bad drivers is a mistake. And is it just me or does the AI recover almost too quickly vs the player?

Gotta appeal to the noobs right?

And is it just me or does the AI recover almost too quickly vs the player?
Nope, it's not you. I was thinking the same thing. I also noticed the AI's tendancy for breaking within AI traffic but almost always crashing into my car. Those dirty bastards.

Sounds like it'd be nice to have an "AI Aggression" option. Being able to change whether or not they choose to crash into or race clean would go miles for fans on both sides.

I dont see a thing for clutch. Is there something wrong with my game?
Help me out.

Oh, I see you are using the "gamepad" profile, it seems that they remove/add mapping options depending on the profile you choose.... which is a weird way of doing it.

If you choose a wheel profile, (5 or 6) there is the gears and the clutch in the list.

(I had not noticed that they added and removed buttons to map depending on the profile)

EDIT: What wheel BTW?

I bought it for $23 through the EA Download Manager and played through the first race after the trial track... seems good so far but the center of the steering with my 360 pad is a touch too small before it makes a big jump to REALLY sensitive on the edges. I'm guessing I need to adjust the deadzone some? Good game but not very arcadey at all like I was expecting... this is a far cry from arcade-like madness such as Need For Speed Most Wanted/etc. :). I'm not usually too into more realistic racing but it is fun and I like that it's all track-based.

someone just told me this game only has WINDOWED widescreen support...

someone tell me this isnt true?

lots of issues with online play so far:

  1. Stupid timer on the game lobbies meaning you got less than 2mins to pick a car and to invite friends into the lobby
  2. 8 players online? WTF its suppose to be 16!!
  3. No settings to force everyone to use certain settings ie force everyone to not use any Asissts
  4. EA nation messanger doesnt say if your friends is online or offline

Those are stuff that needs to be improved im afraid.
