Star Wars Outlaws

I’ve only had time to get around 5-ish hours in so far so these are super early impressions:

Game is good looking, for the most part. Some low res textures get in the way of the visuals. The over-all design of the areas and planets I’ve seen so far are well done.

As people have said many times, facial animations are very bad. Alien races tend to fare a little better, but the more human a face is, the worse the animation gets.

Gameplay is fun, but the stealth is just kind of there. The blaster being the only permanent weapon sucks. I don’t expect Kay to carry around a Doom arsenal, but not needing to have an enemy randomly drop a better weapon you can use for a handful of shots would be nice. Still, there’s a good flow to everything.

The story is there, so far. Kay is fine as a character, she isn’t unlikeable. The writing hasn’t really hooked me yet, it’s fairly typical Ubisoft dialog and mission structure. That could change though, I’m still side-questing around the first open world planet.

Over-all I’m enjoying the game and am looking forward to getting in some more time over the long weekend. I’m glad I didn’t pay full price for it though.

Here is a good vid on gaming AI. One of the comments in the video summed it up for me while watching it. With that said, there are still pretty dumb moments in AI.

people do not necessarily want smart AI, they want AI that makes themselves feel smart! The illusion of smart AI is far more important than them actually being smart, and if the Player has ample tools to predict and outsmart their enemies, that will make for a very good experience.I also always like to say that making smart AI is super easy, but making a good AI that is fun to play against is super hard.

Anyone have a 14th gen Intel CPU? Traded my way into an Intel bundle that comes with Outlaws, but need to run a hardware verification tool and don't have an Intel 14th gen system. If someone with an Intel CPU can run the verification tool for me I'd appreciate it.

That is a good video. Often times smart AI is smoke and mirrors and I have read that many times players get frustrated with truly smart AI. Part of the issue is making it easy to react. Example, a smart AI soldier that flanks will need something like obnoxious foot steps otherwise many people won't notice when they sneak up from behind and kill them instantly.

The other issue on smart AI is that people often don't like it when AI cheats, or at least feels like it cheats, which is often necessary to make it smart. You can make it better by giving it information that a human wouldn't have, and letting it act on that. Like in a fighting game you can make it so that the AI is aware of the button presses when they happen, rather than having a lag time to watch what the player's character does, then responding. Or in a strategy game you can let the AI know what the player is building, so it can build a counter for that. Those kinds of things make an AI hard and "smart," but they feel cheap and shitty. You can tell that it is reacting in ways that a human player couldn't. It's much harder to make an AI that only has the information a human player would have, and still reacts well.

The video talking about the Alien Isolation AI is actually a good example of that, and how they came up with a pretty clever solution to it. For those that don't want to watch, the answer in that case is basically it has two AIs, or maybe more accurately a director and a controller. The actual AI that controls the Alien only knows things it would see in the environment, it has to search for the player and use things like is vision and hearing to find them. However, the director always knows where the player is and what they are doing, it has perfect info. But it can't directly control the Alien, it only can give clues to the controller as to where in general to go. That way you can't shake the Alien and get it stuck somewhere it can't find you, but it also doesn't just lock on to you and find you no matter where you are hiding.

Neat system, and pretty effective, but a fair bit of work to implement well.

I read the Intel Star Wars Outlaws redemption doesn't require hardware verification. However requires an Intel account, survey, and Ubisoft linking.

As a detail, Deepmind both learned a lot by playing the game (against previous version of itself) not just watching players, it became a league of differents bots that get better and better and adds better bots to the league. deepmind training tend to be a lot of synthetic data and ai traning from ai output, for simpler game it was 100% synthetic and self learn without any human training data incerted.

‘Star Wars Outlaws’ Is Better When You Slow Down

The game tries to do a lot of things and isn’t particularly great at any of them...there’s mediocre third-person shooting, serviceable platforming, weak speeder racing, space travel that’s just fine and a ton of mini-games of varying quality...just tearing through the main missions feels like you’re playing Watch Dogs by way of Uncharted with a Star Wars costume on

But if you slow down, you might find a few delights as you romp around planets like lush Toshara and snowy Kijimi...

Yeah, also about the 10 hour mark where you leave that first big planet is where I decided it's an amazing game.

LOL - I doubt this game would run on my old Asus Z-170k mobo with a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, Intel i5-6600k @ 3.5 GHz (4 cores), and 16 GB of ram.

2 hours in and after playing FO4 for 55 hours everything feels like an upgrade. It scratches that itch hard and I am having a ton of fun with it. Thus far, haven’t gotten to the copy paste so a bit early to say. But it’s a solid start.

Hardware unboxed has a better guide.
To be fair at 26:10 DF said a future video will have performance and optimized settings.
I love HUB's graphic guides, good job summarizing settings and provides an easy to follow guide. (I'm using their quality settings with my 4070.)
But that DF tech review is insanely good.
Besides the performance penalty I've read multiple users say RTXDI has minimal to decent visual gains.
DF's section on RTXDI is the most in-depth overview and it shows substantial visual benefits.
However, they also mentioned RTXDI causes odd 2.5X+ FPS drops and frame time instability.
