I've always been a fan of persistent world FPSes (or persistent worlds of any kind). I can play your average Battlefield, QuakeWars, TF2 for a round or two but unlike many I get bored doing the same maps over and over again. Even ET:QW's system of player advancement and rank made play more fun for me. WHile a true MMO like planetside was my favorite FPS, iit looks like Borderlands will be a welcome diversion, especially for $33.00, the more I read and watch about it. I just hope they include lots of future content (free DLC is always a plus!) and have melee weapons as well as just guns.
