Skyrim Modding Megathread

I really can't wait until those texture packs are done... it's already such a huge improvement!! Thanks for posting.

Now someone just needs to get on that minecraft snowblock texture...

Low end systems:

To make TES Skyrim gameplay smoother and to use more memory for it, modify Skyrim.ini with these:
[Papyrus]
iMinMemoryPageSize=100000
iMaxMemoryPageSize=5000000
iMaxAllocatedMemoryBytes=1800000000

Just a quick Q...why is this for "low end systems"? Is there any improvement for a high end system?

that was the only portion for low end systems. Everything else is essentially high end--check the top few, any shadow ini tweaks etc.

Nah, my question is, if that tweak truly makes the game utilize more memory, why is it listed under the "low end system" tweaks? Shouldn't that help with any system?

Added a bunch of screenshots to the FXAA injector section. I toned down the sharpness for these.
The one thing I don't care for about the injector is that it darkens the image. I'm using the pre-configured low-saturation settings, and lowered it even more to be closer to the true color. However, it still darkens the game when enabled.

Any tips?

I just now tried it, and I'm not sure objectively what kind of FPS hit I got, but nothing major...still playable and smooth most of the time.

However, how do you know if it's working? Because walking around the shadows still look like ass to me, blocky and crap. Shouldn't this have fixed that?

EDIT: Disregard that...inside buildings I am getting like 1-2 FPS, unplayable slideshow...something is messed up.

yea still a wip for sure but even worse is the way he replaces d3d9, it breaks all the hooking methods used by rtuner/precision so that you can't even see wtf is going on with fps/memory. completely unusable for me if there's no way to tell how much performance you're gaining/losing with this custom rendering.

Seeing the first HD texture pack is up here:

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=419

I won't be able to try it until after work, but I'd be curious to hear how it is. The wood textures look a little too noisy to me.

That's not the first HD TP. I listed a few yesterday and there have been some from ~day 1. I think the textures in that TP are worse than the original, which is common for these early TP mods.

Still waiting on a mod/fix that tones down the ragdoll physics. Everytime I duel weild lightning/sword, people go flying around when I deliver the killing blow with my sword. It's annoying as fuck

linkage to that other HD pack?

Uploaded my first mod yesterday. HiRes Road Signs: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/download...mments/comments_ajax.php?tid=463797|:|fid=436

It's a simple retexture of the road signs. Many, including me, felt the vanilla road signs were illegible because of a combination of artistic flare and low resolution. I plan on making the wood look more worn, as it is some planks look freshly cut. This is, in part, due to the fact that I don't have a clear idea of where the corners are in the UV map, which I can do once Nifskope works with Skyrim meshes.

^^ nice work, added to my textures file.

My game is starting to look sexy as hell

linkage to that other HD pack?

This was only a page ago, and it may even have been added to the OP =P
edit: nope m3ta1head hasn't added them yet, but i'm sure he'll get around to it.. If you happen to read this, as the OP gets larger i'd recommend thumb-nailing those pics as to make it easier to see what's in there.

Nicer Snowflakes:
In the pictures, I find the shapes to be too defined and a bit too fantasy-like, but in game, it looks good.

Better Interior - Wood:
Some great new textures for a few wooden things commonly found in interiors. He is working on more textures and is going to dirty up the existing ones (along with some other minor modifications).

AaGeOn's HQ TP:
ETA of 1-1.5 weeks for the first version. It is shaping up pretty nicely.
http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1271620-aageons-hq-texture-pack-wip/

Wasteland TP:
I like many of the textures in the TP but some I dislike, like the darker roads, as they don't blend well. Still a WIP obviously.

Skyrimnexus member gorefest2011 has created an improved version of the road texture for the Wasteland TP:

Sunglare:
This might've already been listed. If not, it adds sunglare to the sun. Until godrays are implemented, this will do.

Edit:
Better Gold:
Much better looking gold pieces.
http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=362

High Quality Food and Ingredients:
Only currently covers 4 items but it is something to keep an eye on. The stuff done so far looks really nice.

I think my favorite one so far though, is the updated gold =P

There a fix to stop the shadows from bouncing all over the places?

Agreed, downloading now. Thanks for the effort.

Why do the shadows on my character from hair and other objects look like absolute puke no matter what ini settings I try? I'm trying to mirror all setting changes in each ini file. Any thoughts? I'm not sure which specific setting modifies the character body shadows.

Agreed! They look like turd in Oblivion too, which is why I preferred to have self-shadows disabled (and would do the same here if I can find the INI setting).

Skyrimnexus sure is not handling the load too well. I need to download mods, now!

I'll probably start regularly uploading my mods to the nexus and PES (Planet Elder Scrolls) from now on. I don't know why Nexus draws so much traffic when there are probably more capable sites that host modifications. Don't mistaken this is criticism, I actually adore the Nexus, and (most) of its community (e.g. LHammonds, DarkOne).

I think I'm going to wait until there's a "full" HDTP. I recall in Oblivion that the more mods you install, the more likely it was to fuck something up.

Also, Skyrim Nexus really needs more servers/bandwidth. More than half the time I try to go there it's down or incredibly slow.

Retextures/texture replacers are relatively clean "mods." The mods that mess with mechanics and meshes are more likely to fuck up your game.

yea so far none of the mods have interfered with each other... they're all just textures thrown into a folder which didn't even exist in vanilla skyrim. By mixing all these together, i've got quite a nice-lookin game now!

I installed a mod today that gives you a fully zoomable map. After installing it my save wouldn't load, just hung on the load screen. Good thing the readme noted the issue and tells you how to fix it.

I want a mod that adds non chubby horses... They look kind of rediculous...When I take the train 3-4 times a week it goes past a field of horses, and non of them look anything like the round bodied skyrim horses :D

This thread will probably stay on the front page but I say it deserves a sticky anyway just cause the game is newly released and is in dire need of some of these mods.

Good thread!!

does the Simple Borderless Window mod have any downsides? Simple alt tabbing is very appealing. I guess it's just windowed mode without looking like it?

Uses auto-hotkey (compiled into an exe) to simple set an attribute of the window to not show a border. (If I recall correctly). So it's the same windowed mode, just without the window. If you make it the same res as your desktop, it will fully simulate fullscreen.

Some users are complaining that upon moving the window and dropping the border (going into borderless mode) the position of the games renderer is sometimes off (the window is moved with the top end slightly off screen). So you clip the top of the game and see a black bar (empty space) at the bottom. This doesn't happen all the time, and you are recommended to just quit out and try the launcher again, until it fits nicely. A setting of 10ms for time is said to help reduce the frequency. See the mod for details.

I recommend the Better Performance Mod, it really does work. Seems to be under review in skyrimnexus.com now but you can get it from fileplanet.

When full texture packs are finally released, do they tend to create them based on vram limits of modern video cards? IE, 1G, 1.5G, 2G etc packs? If I had time, I'd try and throw together some texture mods as well.

It's funny how modders have to come along and improve the performance of the game, when there are loads of people posting on bethesdas forums asking for help, and being ignored.

They really need to patch some shit... (but maybe they don't, as modders are clearly doing allllll their dirty work for them)
