Skyrim Modding Megathread

I don't know why you people aren't seeing an improvement. It's like the focus knob was adjusted and everything is a little sharper, which is all I expected, and all I needed.

I will, however, put the Realistic Overhaul graphics back in because I don't like the "vanilla" leaves-all-over-the-place look.

This. While beth gave us better looking game, the mod communiity will still be on top. 4k textures for NPC's and armor is still better than what they have given us by alot.

So is the best bet to remove the texture packs first, then download the update? Or can they co-exist peacefully enough for me to remove the add-in texture packs later?

Hopefully you were using the mod manager? If not, I would recommend just purging the data directory and have steam run integrity on it and then add in your mods again.

If using the mod manager...uninstall them, patch, and then re-add the mods.

The thing is, texture packs are texture packs. I haven't seen any rumblings of "new textures" and "different meshes" in the game. Thus, they shouldn't conflict.

From what I can tell, I'll probably not be downloading the texture pack. I'm quite happy with where my Skyrim looks thanks to the awesome modders.

Is there any way to do this without losing custom items? For example, I'm using the difficult dragons mod, which adds a few items as well; if I remove the mod and reinstall, I lose the items I looted from dragons killed in the past.

That's what I did. In theory there shouldn't be any problem since the Bethesda textures should be in .bsa files (right? I didn't check after I downloaded it) and the mod packs just override those when the game loads them - but I didn't really want to screw anything up. I'd clear my textures folder to be sure, but I think SkyUI and some other non-texture pack mods also drop stuff in there (like relaistic water and better night sky).

LOL, Holy shit

Glad I made a backup copy of my Skyrim folder before I installed any Mods on my system. Uninstalling all my mods and applying this HD pack jacked my game up big time.

Restoring a backup directory and applying fresh patches and hi res textures and will report back.

So is it even worth screwing up all my existing mods, or just leave the main 2K texture pack I use?

You can install the high res texture pack without having to do anything. The textures are in their own zip files and do not overwrite your existing textures. To turn them off just uncheck them under the data section of the launcher.

That being said I wouldn't bother, if your happy with the way Skyrim looks these new textures won't do anything for you. They just marginally makes things look a little crisper.

Personally i prefer the 4k textures I'm using from several user made texture packs.

I think the general consensus is that you can use both, I think. You can run Skyrim HD as well as the DLC that was released today. I'm going to try it just so the texures of random clutter like food and other items will be updated.

what file(s) is the texture pack? a bsa file? A zipped folder of dds files with a directory "textures"?

Is the workshop only accessible through the browser or is it hidden somewhere in Steam as well?

It's an esp file that contains the compressed textures.

When you click on the game in your library, it shows up in details window on the right side where it shows your time played, news and achievements.

Haha, yeah I JUST figured that out and I've been using workshop almost all day lol. Thanks for the heads up though :)

Consensus quickly gathering that the Bethesda "high res" textures aren't worth bothering with at all and certainly not better than any number of texture mods already out. You can even go on youtube and see comparison videos.

I've noticed a considerable difference with textures that have a glistened look to them (like wet stone). I have to test this out more. The rest I just use modder texture packs to fill in the gaps of what Bethesda didn't fix.

Essentially what my plan is.

I found that I'm not very fond of downloading the mods through Steam. It requires that I start the launcher in order to download the esp files, which always clears out my prior mod loading selection. NMM can fix this but I hate how it works. I personally feel that NMM > Steam for mods. Its a little irksome that some of the mod devs have jumped ship immediately.

And this makes it difficult for mod users to keep track of mods as, right now, the modding community has been divided since some mods are exclusive to nexus/alliance and others to SW (Steam Workshop). It wouldn't be so bad if SW actually had a decent interface with some functionality to it, along with the option for no automated installation.

It sure wasn't worth the 3 month delay of the CK for SW...

My hope is that many devs update/mirror to Nexus as well, since that's my mainstay for mods.

What's wrong with it? So far I've only had one mod that I haven't been able to download (millenia weapon textures) and I didn't realize that I had to go to the library to access SW within Steam, but aside from that it has been painless. Simple interface, access from the browser, things seem to be streamlined better. I duno, so far I've seen a lot of complaints about it, but I haven't really been able to find one myself.

No search box
No sort by last update
Lack of fancy descriptions for mods
Automated updates and installations
No user uploaded screenshots for the mods
No version number displayed on mod's page (if one is given by author)
No brief description of mod on browse screen

I imagine some of this stuff will be added in the future. Maybe some of it already is and I just don't see it.

I imagine that since the Workshop was originally designed around community voting on TF2 gear, a lot of those features wouldn't have really been necessary or relevant.

I have been lurking this thread a little since the game came out...

But now that the creation kit has been released, I want to post just so I can be subscribed to the thread :p

Yup, from what I've seen of the Workshop so far, I'm not going to be giving up on Skyrim Nexus any time soon.

Why do you care? There are better texture mods out there. Is it because it isn't "official"? The only thing the official pack is good for is for people who just can't be bothered with clicking something outside of steam. ;)

Well reading from the article it doesn't up the resolution of all the textures in the game and all clutter. I still use plenty of other texture mods, I was just hoping this would be a global "one-over" before applying any others:

Skyrim 2k HD
Stupid level of detail
Vurt's Flora
Realistic Water Textures
etc...

Hope that makes better sense.

Can I delete these 'official' High Res Texture files? Didn't know the thing would automatically start downloading and would prefer having my custom mod setup going.

You can have these plus your mods. Up to you.
