Skyrim Modding Megathread

You probably need to re-do your settings in the launcher. I've noticed that updates tend to reset my AA and AF settings. Your AF is probably turned off, so the obvious thing is to check and see if it's off, then turn it back on to something acceptable.

I figured that too and checked to see if my AF was on and it was, but I didn't think about turning it on and off. And wow did my previous post come off as a bit snide. :eek:

Yeah, you have to fire up that launcher the first time after the patch, let it intialize, and go on your merry way.

I have backups of my .ini files tweaked just the way I like with everything so after doing that tap dancing it's as simple as copy and paste, have my settings back the way I want them, and that's it. :)

Anyone else having trouble with Midas Magic with the new patch? I got SkyUI and SKSE working, but Midas Magic doesn't seem to be working. I have the latest Nexus Mod Manager and uninstalled/reinstalled the latest version of Midas and it just won't show up in the game :confused:

Works for me. Maybe install it manually?

How do u earn more coins in this game? i only get around 20-100 coins on drops/chests from hideouts/caves and always takes me a while to even save up 1k of coins. i have also sold a lot of stuff but most stuff i can only sell for like 100-200 coins only.

Crafting.

If you're an enchanter, collect up all of the jewelry and iron daggers you find. Then enchant them with the most valuable enchantment you have available (though with Petty and Lesser soul gems) and sell them. Huge money to be made that way...super mega huge money once you get the Banish enchantment for weapons.

If you're an alchemist, just craft the most valuable potions you can. Same goes for smithing.

Otherwise, running Radiant quests can net you some good coin.

Also, always make sure you're only bringing the most valuable stuff back to town. If you have SkyUI (hint: you should), you can sort by value/weight. Get rid of all the lowest v/w stuff.

Oh, and killing dragons. Dragon Scales and Bones are worth a good chunk of change.

Manage your loot better. I'm about 100 hours into the game, and my gold found is at ~367,000. I did this without fast travel mind you. I'd pick up what I could and sell it when the quest was over. Don't waste your time hauling things like clothes and unenchanted weapons/armor. Look for potions, stones, jewely, rare books, scrolls, ect. Make sure to hit up all the merchants when you return to a hold. Riften is a good place to cash out. Provided you are in the thieves guild, there are 12 merchants there in the 500-1000 gold range. If you've managed your loot properly, you can easily make 5,000 gold in a single trip there.

If you find your merchants are running out of money there is the Rich Merchants mod.

I haven't used it as of yet but would likely go with "Less" so that it doesn't become way to easy to make a lot of money.

Perk up in your speech skill as well. Some find it pointless. But being able to invest in shops down the road is nice

I find about 1-2k of gold coins in caves when I'm running around exploring mines or ruins. That doesn't count the armor and stuff I come across. I try not to fast travel so I can scrape up the various ore veins and alchemy ingredients.

Anyone know of a mod to get more than just ONE ingredient from a whole patch of flowers cotton wheat etc.?

Little off topic, but think its normal to have 35 hours of game time on my first character, and not even make it to High Hrothgar yet? :confused: lol

I only have 8 hours into the game, and I think 4 of those are testing mods. I am too much of a perfectionist.

Regarding arcane crafting, are you likely to create items stronger than typical drops without spending tons of enchanting perks? I'm finding Skyrim to be pretty much a 'Monty Haul' world.

General rule of thumb: Only pick up items with a Value/Weight ratio of at least 10. (Ie. if the item is worth 70 gold, then only pick it up if it weighs 7 or less). Or if you find something that has a weight of say 13, only pick it up if it's value exceeds 130. (10 is a fair number for gaining money, and very easy to do the quick math). So when you see the awesome war hammer with a value of 150, don't pick it up because it has a weight of 20, and thus the value ratio is too low to be worth it.

Assuming that you have a carry weight limit of 300 (with 100 being used by weapons/armor), that gives you 200 per trip in loot, at at your value ratio thats a potential $2,000. Now if your merch skill is low, you only get half that, so about $1,000.

If you follow that general rule you can make money rather quickly. By the time I made it to white run, I already had a few thousand. In general, I find it rather easy to make money in this game (even without abusing crafting/enchanting) and find very little to spend it on (unless you are trying to power level skills). Currently running a mod that drops that value even lower (less gold found, and merchants only pay 1/3rd the price), and still have enough money to easily buy houses etc.

Other things you can do are: kill any animals you come across, and just keep their pelts (archery is good for this), but not there meat, as it generally doesn't give enough value. Then whenever at town, turn it into leather and craft either leather bracers or a leather helmet. (Bracers give more xp per piece of leather, Helmet gives more gold per leather). Your smithing goes up, and you are net gaining money in the process.

There is also a "transmute" spell you can look up (uesp or wikia), that is very useful if you want to create jewelry as mentioned above, as a very fast/easy way of making money.

Then if you are really desperate, you can just enchant iron daggers that net you around $250 a piece.

I prefer the first method as it seems less "exploity" and generally gives me enough money to not have to worry about that stuff. But Elder Scrolls is all about choices, and so the options are available if you want.

I am the same way, I have like 50 hours played, and I'm willing to bet 15 of those hours are just from launching the game and testing mods.

Honestly....this and only this. The great way to make cash is to sell the potions other than health/mag/stam.

Simply put...if you don't havea house by level 7..you are doing it wrong. ;)

Height Adjusted Races with True Giants:
I've only used the True Giants esp and the sizes are quite good.

JaySuS Swords -light reflection tweak-:

Soul Gems Differ - Full and Empty:
I highly suggest using NMM for the installation of this one. Plenty of different colors and options to choose from. The base textures are very nice looking too.
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=6335

Skyrim -Elys- Uncapper:
I keep forgetting to list this mod. Allows full customization of skill leveling speed, perk point distribution, and leveling past the current limits (100 for skills, etc.).

And, CK is to be released on Tuesday.

Get a companion and store Dragon Scales and Bones (a $250, $500 value but won't get that from merchants) recovered from defeated dragons in the companion's inventory. Fast Travel to Whiterun,Riften,etc and sale the goods. Might have to go to different cities as many mercants only have about 1,000 in gold everyday.

Equip certain apparel that gives you better prices, use a potion(haggling one), store a bunch of crap in a dead corpse awaken it with a POWER or conjuration spell, fast travel(your companion and the zombie/corpse will follow), kill it in front of the store and sale all the stuff.

I have like 30K in cash,no cheats.

Yea keep an eye out for haggling gear/pots. Also, make sure you give a coin to a begger before doing your bartering.

For anyone following STEP (I've started incorporating a lot of the mods in it, may have to start fresh and follow exactly), I just seen a Facebook update from yesterday:
v2.0 release is expected for next Sunday (5) evening. I will release a small preview #3 of the mods during the week. I'm going to split the mod section regarding gameplay in balance-friendly/unfriendly mods, making the first one my default recommandation.
Will be interested to see what changes come about.

Um, where do you get that huge lion to ride? I hit your link and I see an author with 0 files at present.

Realistic Lighting without post processing has received a major update (it has a new url so the OP will need to be updated):
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=7654#

It allows a fair amount of customization. As such, I can finally obtain strong sunlight and dark shadows, which is something I've been hoping to do for a long time. After about five minutes of tweaking and testing, here is a comparison picture of my settings:
Vanilla Skyrim:
TESV2012-02-0420-52-12-8s6.jpg

Uber awesome dj_2004 settings:
TESV2012-02-0420-53-04-82s.jpg

And this does not cause the sky/clouds to be washed out. In fact, as can be seen in the pictures, the sky is unaffected by those settings. On top of that, it has no negative effect on FPS compared to vanilla Skyrim. Ah, I love mods. :)

Some other mods worth mentioning:
Skyrim Creatures Alive:
Developed by the talented Corepc, it aims to be like MMM. Martigen and Corepc worked closely in the later days of Oblivion's MMM so things should turn out well.
http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1336872-wipzbetarelz-skyrim-creature-alive/ (the current newest version, .2, is not available at the nexus yet)

PISE (I am pretty sure this was posted before):
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=1269

And for those who get infinite/crashing loading screens when loading a saved game from the main menu, remove these lines from skyrim.ini:
uLockedObjectMapLOD=8
uLockedTerrainLOD=8
fMapWorldMaxHeight=150000.0000
fMapWorldMinHeight=1500.0000
fMapWorldZoomSpeed=0.0800

If that doesn't work, delete all of these:
uLockedObjectMapLOD=8
uLockedTerrainLOD=8
bWorldMapNoSkyDepthBlur=1
fWorldMapNearDepthBlurScale=0
fWorldMapDepthBlurScale=0
fWorldMapMaximumDepthBlur=0
fMapWorldMaxPitch=360.0000
fMapWorldMinPitch=0.0000
fMapWorldYawRange=3600.0000
fMapWorldTransitionHeight=10000.0000
fMapWorldMaxHeight=130000.0000
fMapWorldMinHeight=5000.0000
fMapWorldCursorMoveArea=0.9000
fMapWorldHeightAdjustmentForce=100.0000
fMapWorldZoomSpeed=0.0500
fMapLookMouseSpeed=3.0000
fMapMoveKeyboardSpeed=0.0025
fMapZoomMouseSpeed=15.0000
sMapCloudNIF=0

Basically, the settings that are added for those map skyrim.ini mods.

It's amazing how much horsepower those map tweaks use. I just stuck with the default map. It wasn't worth the hit.

The only thing I like better in that second tweaked picture is the way the sky looks.

Those shadows are way too dark. I see what the aim is, but I'm again just seeing another completely overstated image. And I've come to realize this depends on your monitor and calibration, but I know my Dell isn't lying to me.

Hit on what? The map tweaks had no effect on my performance. The problem is that they cause certain saved games (mainly saves in exterior cells) to not load.

Yes, I figured people would dislike the dark shadows and bright sunlight, which is why I stated this is the look I am after and that the mod has plenty of customization (as well as a stock preset) for everyone to play around with. Looks mighty fine on my IPS and TN panels so I'm happy with my settings. :)

Looked like it was some settings like these that you mentioned:

.ini tweak

[MapMenu]
uLockedObjectMapLOD=8
uLockedTerrainLOD=8
fMapWorldMaxHeight=150000.0000
fMapWorldMinHeight=1500.0000
fMapWorldZoomSpeed=0.0800
sMapCloudNIF=0

This .ini tweak gave me something that looked super awesome but after a bit of use it was affecting my game performance. YMMV

That's all that matters. :)

Is there a texture mod that affects windmills?

Maybe the official one supposedly coming next week?

If Skyrim 2K Textures doesn't yet, it probably will at some point down the road otherwise you'll see someone make a specific texture mod like I've seen done for an amazing number of other specific items in the game. Nothing yet, though.

Ya know I can get something that looks pretty much identical to that bottom image just by screwing around with my desktop colour settings through nvidia control panel :p Boost contrast a lot, drop brightness slightly, add a little bit of gamma and adjust the hue to add a slight blue tinge. I'd take a screenshot, but since its just playing around with my settings you wouldn't actually see anything... tried to take a picture with my phone but the phone automatically adjusts to capture the colour range so the images look much the same :p
