Forza 3... Who's Getting It?

Looks like random impressions... apparently from someone who hasn't actually tried the demo because there's no way in hell you'd mistake the Ferrari handling / feel for that of the Mini.

Talking of the Mini. Put sim damage on and smash it into a wall. Then try to drive it... best sick car in a game ever! I couldn't get the poor little thing up the hill afterwards, though it tried and tried. :D

When you update to Gold?

I don't know, honestly. It seems idiotic that the demo would only be available to gold users, though.

Played this morning, couldn't get into it (because of the 2 lap long races). Finally discovered how to do hotlaps and it's a blast. Yes, the game feels MUCH smoother than Forza 2. As stoked as I was about using the in-car view, I don't like how it limits your vision (nor the overall "cheapness" of it) so I reverted back to my Forza 2 front bumber cam.

Ya know, I too was upset about the inclusion of the Rewind feature, but honestly it's not a bad thing. First, lap times that use rewind or go off road do not get posted to the leaderboard (took me a min to figure out the offroad part, no more corner cutters at RA's kink!). Next, I used it a few times to figure out two of the turns and it helped a good bit. Use it or not, it's up to you. Warning though, if you post a fast lap time and then rewind back past the end of said lap it erases your lap time, I found that out the hard way...thankfully I posted several faster times afterwards.

Currently sitting at #286 or so with the Porsche (almost down to 1:00 lap), the only car I've really put any time into. Not sure where the top guys are taking 2 seconds out of me.

That shouldn't matter, hotlapping I'm carrying speed from the previous lap.

downloading demo now. I have been looking forward to this game for months. I just cant keep myself into NFS shift.. although it was a move in the right direction for NFS games

i played the demo and went back into forza 2 and i was struggling to find the difference between the two games. yes the graphics look better on this one but the handling and physics seems identical to forza 2.

is it a bad thing? no not really but after i have played shift, gtr evo and rfactor, i find it very easy to control on forza now. before when i first played this game (forza 2) i was rubbish and needed some of the aids on but now im playing with all aids off and finding it "very" easy in terms of handling.

Good article on FM3 and GT5 at TGS and his view after playing both games. Here is a quote from it:

I'm a big Gran Turismo fan, so it was a bit of a surprise to me that the Forza Motorsport 3 demo did more for me. Things like damage modeling and background art aside, it was the superb control and high level of accessibility that won me over. Forza 3 was just more fun. More impressive. Of course, this is not to say that Gran Turismo 5 isn't a good game. It will be great, I'm sure, but Forza 3 show floor demo has me wanting to race again. I need to get me one of these three-screen setups too.

I have never been a racing fan but I might have to give this game a try and download the demo tonight.

downloaded the demo.. took 5 minutes to realize how incredible this game really is

I HATE HATE HATE that my g25 doesn't work on the 360. there just isn't a good driving wheel for the 360 that I know of. Other than that, this game is going to be awesome.

After a few laps with each car (fewest laps with the Mini, Ferrari, and Audi) my times are:

Mini: 1:16.574
Evo: 1:12.645
Ferrari: 1:10.152
Audi: 1:07.553
Porsche: 1:01.068

ABS and TCS on, no-clutch manual.

The Evo is geared almost perfectly for the track. 4th gear the entire time except for 3rd for the two hairpins and 5th for a few seconds heading towards hairpin 1.

Leaderboards are now in... which means you can race without opponents. :)

Pull up the leaderboard and start the race from the leaderboard. BAM no ai opponents and you can do as many laps as you want.

My thoughts:
+

Great menu system/Super Clean
Good Damage/Physics
Looks much better than Forza 2
Cars feel like they have a very good weight to them.
Will still buy it

Game has god awful in car view, the cockpit is not fully rendered. Anyone who says this looks better than GTp in the cockpit is completely blind. I have dirt 2 and it destroys Forza 3 when it comes to in car view, for that matter, Dirt 2 also has a better sense of speed, better lighting and I would say it just generally looks better.

I think Turn 10 talked a little out their ass honestly, and I think this game is a victim of the hype train. Don't get me wrong it's good, and I will buy it, but it is not as impressive looking as I was expecting. Just do a lap on Dirt2 and a lap of Forza 3 and the evidence is pretty obvious.

My 2 pennies

What makes you say the cockpit isn't fully rendered? (I don't know the tech so I couldn't really comment either way)

I do like how the cockpits look though (As do I in prologue), so I find what you're saying a little surprising. Unlike you though, I didn't rate Dirt 2. Not that it really has any place here anyway given it's a completely different type of game and only runs at 30fps.

The cockpit view was my biggest complaint with the game as well. They just look... odd. Likewise, anyone else notice the lack of proper hand animations? The driver does not shift, that bothers me.

One thing I really don't like is that they've made it so you don't turn the wheel (in the cockpit view) anywhere near as much as you would in the real car (lock to lock). This isn't the first game to do it, but I still don't like it.

I hate shifting animations, so I can't say I'm sad to see them go. They never match your actual actions (driver always changes gear later than you do, unavoidable really) and it catches my eye.

the only thing negative i came away with was the lack of variable clutch control, that is to say on the default control scheme anyways, you cannot slip or feather the clutch, it's all or nothing, which pretty much makes the clutch useless to me when it comes to spirited driving.....

on the positive side, even my wife commented on how great the scenery and all looks even in the far distance, great job with that turn 10 !!

and i FINALLY get to control the music being played or not during racing, again much welcomed

i only had about 20 minutes to play on my lunch break, will get more time in tonight and see about other controller configs but my guess is you cant have a variable clutch and have variable gas and brake controls with only two progressive trigger buttons :(

T10 said a week or two ago that there would be no shift animations maily because in 90% of racing games if you have a shift animation it's either super jumpy or late.

Honestly though I don't think much of the cockpit either.

My biggest gripe with the demo is that you can't change the controls. I've been using the same control scheme with pretty much every racing game (X to downshift, Y to upshift, A to look back) and there's no controls options in the game...I mean come on!

What I find strange about the cockpit comments is that the second I loaded the game I said to myself "holy shit, a cockpit view where I can actually see enough of the road to use". Perhaps I didn't pay enough attention, but one thing I certainly noticed is that it's not one of the "I think I'll sit in the back and drive today" views we normally get.

The hands definitely need some work though. They're dead. :D

Do people like to look at really well textured fuzzy dice in their cockpit while driving around?

now i gotta go watch two hours of greys anatomy in order to play again....bleh...

im still tore up about the clutch being a complete ON/OFF thing.....it's totally wrong, a clutch must be as variable as gas, brake or steering or its worthless !!

Well Like Dirt2 and GT for instance you can take the analog stick and look around the cockpit, with forza 3 its not like that. You have straight ahead and left+right views.

really? because you can articulate the head view in bumper cam mode just fine with the right analog stick, you just have to press up on it a little in order to pan left and right, if you just push left or right it goes 90 degrees left or right

This also.

In Forza you see the very tips of the fingers and the driver doesn't shift, it's just odd when they are going for the realistic feel with the physics and damage and your driver has his hands super glued to the steering wheel.

Well I wouldn't necessarily say it doesn't have a place, there are many tracks in D2 that are street courses and it's a racing game so. But T10 said this would be the graphics monster this year and I think D2 looks much better, if any one has played D2 I'm sure they will back my comment.

Push forward on the right stick and then move it left and right. You can look around the cockpit just fine.

Holy crap this is one hell of a demo. I actually like F3 using the controller over GT5P using the controller. I might just have to bust out the old MS wheel to see how it is.

Very, very impressed by this demo. Graphics are top notch while still feeling like forza (been playing since the first one) I really like the track they gave us-it feels like the point to points in the first forza; I was really sad to see them remove ptp with forza 2 because I hate circuit racing. 10 laps in the same circuit? No thanks give me 1 lap of a 10 mile track.

Finally got a chance to try this game out, and overall it is excellent and pretty much has sealed my pre-order, but i have a few minor nitpicks.

The left bumper no longer brings up the damage/tire temp status in your HUD. I like knowing when my tires are heated up. Anybody know what button does this, if it is still in the game? Also, why do I need to load the track menu, then load the level again? This is silly, especially when you want to restart a race you have to load the track menu and then re-load the level again so you can start. Just load the track straight up!

Is it me or I like NFS Shift better. It's weird. I hope final version of FM3 would have more improvements. The graphics is nice in the game. I would have to wait and get full game once its out.

I would sure hope the physics are better in Forza 3 then Shift. With better I mean more realistic.

this is a more accurate simulation compared to NFS shift in my opinion, I know once this releases I won't play NFS shift again

I agree with you, but I dont see a point with the available driving wheels... if it used the g25, a real clutch would make sense

Well I just got done playing the demo, although it was only briefly. Either way I really liked it and this game is definitely bought.

Not for me... the handling in SHIFT is terrible (Mostly on RWD cars) and it's closer to being an arcade racer than a sim. I can understand why people prefer that type of game though.
