Elite: Dangerous

I'm having such a hard time making money in this game. I have had fun bounty hunting, I need start trading I guess.

Question: How many different weapons are in the game? In most of these videos it seems like they only use either Pulse Lasers or the machine gun thing.

The three basic weapon types are Thermal, Projectile and Missile.Thermal works against shields, projectile's better on bare hull, so it's lasers first, then the guns. Missiles are effective but very expensive.

Three types of lasers, six types of guns, three types of missiles (counting mines) and varying degrees of DPS and mounting variations.

I'll give it another shot with projectile weapons to damage hulls.

I've been able to take down shields pretty quickly with my lasers, but the time it's taken to destroy hulls with them had gotten frustrating.

To FARM money bounty hunting, you really need to accept the elite anaconda pirate killing missions.

Those are easy once you have a proper ship and figure out how to fly with flight assist off.

But to make money to do that, you really need to mine (going for the lucrative prime places), or simply run those 13K-20K missions that are pretty easy. You can also do rare trading, not regular trading as your ship is too small.

If you are trading, do not be afraid to sell your weapons, shields, and scanners in favor of max jump range and cargo space. Upgrade to a Hauler as soon as you can afford it, and equip it like in my previous post.

From there money making is exponential... and it has to be, some of the ships cost millions upon millions to buy and upgrade.

When managing pips to your various systems, you're best served by all or nothing.

You can google the stats, but all pips in shields, engines, or weapons makes a HUGE difference compared to say 1 or 2 pips. So its best to focus on one thing at a time, engine when you need to boost and flee, then all weapons when firing, then all shields. Balanced doesn't work well.

Damn that looks cool.

Lots, both in size, grade, and variety and they come in fixed, gimbled, and turret forms:

This is a useful guide: http://barkandbyte.blogspot.com/2014/08/byte-elite-dangerous-weapons-guide.html

Although I don't agree about beam lasers. If you have a big powerplant and distributor and not that many mounts you want to dedicate to killing shields, a beam laser or two can do the job very quickly. I believe you can buy and sell weapons at zero loss to you, so you can experiment though. Can anyone verify if that's still the case? 99% sure if you buy a turret for 10K, then selling it you get every penny back unlike ships.

It does have a solo mode, but it's still online, kinda like Diablo 3. The galaxy you see in solo is the "live" version that all online players see as well, so it is kind of cool having the "evolving galaxy" system in place even if you're playing solo. Granted an optional fully offline mode would have been great, too...

It's a great game and there's 400 billion systems in the galaxy, so yeah, there's a lot to do. However the VARIETY of stuff to do is not great right now. Mostly it's running trade routes (or FedEx missions from the bulletin boards), combat missions, and exploration. If doing those types of things inside a massive galaxy you can explore, it's great. If you're expecting something like Freelancer with story missions as well as randomly generated quests, and hand-crafted systems... this is not that.
[emphasis mine]
Ah, thank you for that. I was wondering if this was the replacement to Freelancer I was looking for.

Anyone care to get a "post your ship" going using this tool: http://eliteshipyard.nfshost.com/

Cobra - Pretty happy with the config, kind of a jack-of-all-trades right now. Good jump range, OK cargo, packs a punch, and reasonably maneuverable. The wing lasers really need to be gimbled since they are so far apart, but I can keep just one pip in weapons, and just switch between full pips in shields or engines depending on the need. Once the shields are down for free, the BIGASS fixed cannons can really tear em to shreds... if you can hit your target! I figure I should be able to take on anything even a bit larger than myself, except probably a CMDR Viper that knows what he's doing, in which case I'll GTFO. ;)

Bummer, no data on the Imperial Clipper. ;)
I watched this Youtube video on it, and yeah to outfit one is absolutely insane!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fURFH04vzxA

On the plus side, once they implement walking around your ship and having NPCs and what not, they could have some missions where you're transporting passengers like an airline. And if you wanted some extra money, cancel the delivery mission and drop them off at a pirate outpost instead as slaves.

*Kshhh This is your pilot speaking, we will be late arriving at Alpha Centuri by approximately forever. No drinks will be served on this flight, and we ask you to remain seated and obey the instructions of the armed man with the plasma cannon up front. Enjoy your slavery and thank you for flying Imperial Air. *Ksshhh

If you were curious as to the absolute value of different class and grade components on various ships, and how they compare to one another, here's a great chart below that has been finalized.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y84sxh1hNzA

It can really help you choose for example whether the lightweight D-class on the Viper which is also way less expensive is a better buy than C or B class since they are so close in performance. And for a Type6, the Class 4A is pretty much the same as a Class 5A on that ship, and for a Hauler they are both the same regardless.

Also as a reminder, here's how pips affect performance:
1 pip to shields allows the shields to absorb around 1% more damage.
2 pips to 8% more damage.
3 pips to 37% more damage.
4 pips to 150% more damage.

The recharge rate of shields is also unaffected by how many pips you have, as long as you have at least 1. So if recharging, just keep 1 pip, and if you're an Anaconda or Python with massively powerful A shields, the 150% boost is certainly worth it as you get a 577 total value on the below chart, making it much more worthwhile than engines.

Is there a way to find out how far a station is from its systems star? I don't see anything in the galaxy map, looking to see how many ly places are in systems I want to go to.

Ducman69 thank you for all of your posts!!! I study them, you have single handedly made this game more fun for me. :)

After playing about 10-12 hours. I'm liking it, but this really feels half baked feature wise. There's been a lot of annoying little things that could make this better with minimal effort.

Number one on my complaint list so far is extremely simple, why is there no recently visited systems list, or even a list to add systems/bookmarks of places you go to frequently to lock onto instead of scrolling through the terrible system menu every single time.

The galaxy map is alright for now I guess, gives a lot of info, mostly useless. The thing I figured it would be most useful for is knowing distances between stuff in the system after having the data on it, but nope! I mean come on, that's the first thing people figure out about stuff is distance generally. There should be at least an ~average distance value on the maps for planets/stations that you have been to/ can see on the map. The same should be for a friends list. There should be a separate page under the contacts menu for you to be able to add friends and easily communicate with.

And now I've lost my thought process with stuff around the house :D Those were the main gripes so far playing. I've been mostly just doing regular commodity trading and a few jumps into combat when I'm about to tear my eyes out going back and forth.

No prob, glad to share info I find!

Now if anyone had any doubt as to the combat abilities of a well upgraded Viper and the value of chaff... yeah:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUE-s5U21lE

Single-highhandedly takes on a capital ship forcing it to jump, as well as its escorts, and never breaks shields. Usually a capital ship would insta-shred any single vessel, but he had dual-bank chaff and just kept chaff spamming the whole time so the auto-turrets had nothing to lock on to. Same vulnerability with the Anaconda, couldn't lock on to nuffin!

ChaffLauncher_Ingame.png

Bastard is a little cocky though, since a CMDR or two using fixed weapons like I do with my bigass cannons would have ripped him a new butthole if he didn't stay evasive! ;)

BTW, got shots of the new Zorgon Peterson Fer De Lance: http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Fer_de_Lance

http://hosting.zaonce.net/elite/newsletters/newsletter_201501_09/fer_de_lance_amend_Comp.jpg

Same manufacturer as the frumpy Hauler, hence the style. Its supposed to be uber luxurious though. Bling bling! Basically, its the space version of The Dog bounty hunter's SUV.
A Zorgon Petterson Group (Zee Pee Gee) designed vessel favored by well- heeled bounty hunter and freewheeling business corporations. A sophisticated craft, capable of both limited trading, combat, and leisure function. The spacious hull is mainly given over to sophisticated weaponry, defences and navigation equipment at the expense of cargo capacity.

They're going to have to nerf that, you know. That's just ridiculous.

No need for a nerf on chaff, they just need to give the capital ships shields. Appropriately sized so that it takes multiple ships with heavy weaponry to lower them, before any smaller ship could attempt to take out those "weak" spots. Makes more sense that way for capital ships to go up against each other with broadsides to knock their shields down.

But huge ships like Anaconda's should have an Achilles heal in that if they rely on a massive amount of turret weapons that they would be vulnerable to a very agile ship with chaff like the Viper.

A CMDR in a Anaconda still wouldn't really be at risk of losing his ship to a single Viper though, as he could just full pip in shields and jump away without ever even needing to deploy a shield cell.

The Viper with dual-chaff is also vulnerable as it has a weak hull, seems to always have power issues, and is slower in top speed to a Cobra with a A-distributor (perma-boost yo), and chaff only confuses turrets it doesn't confuse missiles from what I understand... nor fixed weapons of other fighters.

But in WW2, even the largest battleships and aircraft carriers were vulnerable to aircraft without their own aircraft defenders... ;)

also chaff does nothing for fixed weapons
and you can unlock your target with gimbled weapons and they will lock forward
there are ways around chaff its fine

Or buff the Battleships.

Seems more the later. The shields went down awfully quick for a capital class ship, and it didn't seem like the internal components were particularly well protected either.

Wow that video was unreal!! Did he have gimbaled Pulse lasers? Or turreted?

Looked like gimbals according to the icons on his HUD.

Capital ships don't have shields, just obvious weak points that when targeted and attacked can cause one to retreat and jump away.

Or alternatively, just have capital ships be mobile stations/aircraft carriers used to restock and refuel a fleet of ships. That way if he had attacked the capital ship, sure some turrets would fire, but primarily you'd see a swarm of twenty fighter ships (agile with no need for big fuel tanks, jump drives of their own, etc) fly out and I think he would have had a hard time with all of them focusing on him at once. ;)

I think additional support ships responding to a distress call would be cool too. Not just the few fighters you see in the video, but smaller destroyers and other point defense ships that specialize in anti-fighter weaponry. I remember in X3 the bigger ships often had flak guns that were AoE bursts that would mess you up quickly if you got in too close.

So what do you guys think this means?

'Wings' multi-player enhancements coming soon! (date tba) #EliteDangerous Beta players get 'Wings' Beta free http://ow.ly/i/8dBYR

From their twitter post. So are they thinking about charging for their updates now, using what should be free fixes and going the DLC route? I really hope not :( It's already overpriced at 60$ in my opinion.

Its already been confirmed that 'Wing' feature will be free for all, just that beta players will have earlier access to it, to test it and then it will be released. They will not charge for it, per David Braben's twitter account:

https://twitter.com/DavidBraben/status/554342962298376192

@PrototypeCube @Gunrun @EliteDangerous No. Wings will go to everyone who has the game without paying extra, just Beta backers get it sooner.

EDIT: Still surprised that Galnet hasn't mention the player taking out that warship in Earth space, during beta that would have some kind of mention, even if it was a satire.

SO happy to hear about the Wingman update coming! That was the number one complaint between my friend and I.

No easy grouping.
No shared bounties??
No easy way to find friends....
No squading up???

It's about damn time Frontier...get with the program!

Holy crap, I didn't realize how huge the cockpit is on the Imperial Clipper.

We really need a NPC crew to make the bridge of such large ships so much more interesting, with perhaps cost to pay for a crew with certain benefits. Instead of a landing computer for example, just have a copilot that you hire that can automate some things (takeoff, docking, autopilot from point A to B). Have a gunner who can man turrets manually so they are immune to chaff (but perhaps slightly less accurate as a person would be). Maybe instead of just a really expensive scanner, have the option of recruiting a NPC scientist to analyze data when exploring. But obviously we need to be able to get up and walk around the ship as they've promised ASAP to appreciate that fully. :)

Welp, I've been eyeing this game for a while now and I finally took the plunge....

Any advice for a complete greenie?

I would find a in system route between 2 stations and do some trading for a bit to earn money.... Also to use that time to learn more about bounty hunting/exploration, mining, or whatever else might interest you. Going around looking for stuff to kill is a pita right away in the starting ship. Spent wayy too much time trying to find spots for kill missions and it paying little.

I will get this when and if they have an update that allows you to leave the ship and explore planets.

I would just get out and fight. You need to learn flight and combat above all else. You'll have plenty of time to figure out trading grind.

Get an Eagle and hang out at Nav Beacons and Resource Collection sites, investigate USSs. Just shoot the wanted guys. I would stick to Federation territories for starters. (bounties tend to pay better than Alliance, and you won't get anything in Anarchy w/o a Bounty scanner)

Upgrade your ship's systems in this order, Powerplant, Distributor, Thrusters, Frame Shift Drive, Weps, Shields, Sensors.

I've been playing and is there any sort of mining in the game? So far from what I see its combat or run the commodities between stations (with missions also falling into those two categories)

I like the game and interface but so far it feels a little empty as far as choices you can do

Also is anyone else concerned they are already talking about paid dlc? Are we going to be dlced to death to get the complete game?

Saturn, Sampson thanks guys!.. For some reason I'm getting an error with the elitedangerous32.exe crash on initial load. I've completely removed / cleaned it, new install (inc. launcher), given administrator rights to it, and created an exemption with Kaspersky..

Just waiting for it to finish syncing and I'll give this another shot..

Paid expansions packs were planned from the start. Reasoning being they don't want to half-ass some of the bigger features like FPS combat and planetary exploration.

Everything else will be free.

Which is fine, they have to make money. But personally I prefer a subscription model, because with paid expansion packs I worry if they split it up in such a way that the playerbase gets fractured. I've seen that in other games where your buddy wants to do something, but you can't because you don't have the expansion even though you're playing the same game.

With subscription, you can ensure a level playing field for all involved as everyone pays the same, and everyone is playing the same game so you have a more dense playerbase and no issues playing with buddies from work and what not. So that's what I'd prefer is to pay $8 a month, and be able to freeze my stats and skip a month when going on vacation and what not, then turn my subscription back on when ready. And the devs continue to want to expand on the game and keep it fresh, because that's how you keep and grow that subscriber base.

But as was said, they are doing major updates to the root game free without expansions, which is good as it needs it.

Yes, there is rare trading, regular trading, smuggling, piracy, bounty hunting, just doing various missions (quests), mining, and exploring and any mix of those.

BUT, you are very limited by your starting budget and ship in what you can do. Starting out, I would just do missions, as you aren't that powerful, you can't jump that far, you don't have that many slots in the small ship, and you don't have a lot of money for upgrades.

You can then also do rares trading, selling everything on your ship you don't need (yes including weapons and shields) and investing in the best jump drive ASAP and quickly progress up to a stripper Hauler and make money fast, then do whatever the heck you want with your mula.

But remember that ED is really pretty damn close to a space SIMULATOR, and there are a tremendous amount of attention to detail in the game that you may not at first appreciate. While the ship flies fine just pointing it and going, you have tons of control over everything and that differentiates a noob from an elite.

Best to watch some of the helpful youtubers get into some of the details of the mechanics.

I guess it was mentioned over the weekend that chaff is getting nerfed :-(
