Elite: Dangerous

Is this worth buying if you only care to explore other worlds and galaxies in VR?

ive never been into space shooters or looting etc etc, but i am interested in exploring vast spaces ie. mass effect 1

There are people who do purely exploration and cartography. It's an important job, since it affects everyone in the game; it's the only way that players know what planets are in the solar system ( if any ).

I have a Steam friend who is 400 light years away from me and probably at least 200 light years from civilisation. I told him that I hoped that he brought a blow up doll, since he will be there for months. You basically buy a fuel scoop, so that you can scoop energy from the stars and use it to power your ship. He mentioned that there is some kind of organized effort to map the galaxy ( maybe check the discussion forum ). I'm not sure how that is going to work out, since I think Braben mentioned that you would die long before exploring even a fraction.

From what I've read, the game's difficulty has been nerfed into oblivion. I mean in 30 hours you will only get interferred with a couple of times and half the time, it's just an NPC fucking with you to say, "Hey what's up bro?" or it's a bug and no one is there.

The AI combat is weak, you can buy auto aiming weapons and you can run away from combat by boosting and then going into supercruise. This game is easy mode to the Nth degree so yeah... I don't know how long seeing different coloured suns will interest you though?

I've had more interdictions than that, 4 today so far in about 6 hours play.

They did a patch a day post-release but I've given up on the game. 5 days of playing, I'm in a cobra MK 3 and honestly, the only reason I ended up in it is because an NPC transport ship blocked the entrance to the docking ( he had his nose stuck down in a weird angle ). Two other ships were behind him, pushing him and the Police just blew everyone up ( for trespassing ). Palladium was strewn at the entrance and I made about 90 K by spending an hour and collecting and selling it on the black market ( I was in an Eagle and it only has 2 cargo hold ). It was enough to upgrade to an Adder. It was funny and facepalm-worthy.

I think that they may have tried to hide the clusterfuck of poor coding / having magnet rails on the entrance ( why would they even have that ? ) by getting AI ships that get stuck docking, to explode all of their contents but I'm not sure.

On days 4 and 5, I could see all of the gaping flaws in the game.

I'm just waiting on feedback from customer service, regarding my refund at this point ( they wanted reconfirmation ). I was going to try my hand at mining but I can't be bothered really.

I have not been following Star Citizen for 8 months but I was blown away by the planetary landing and zero gravity combat:

Arena Commander 1.0 was released today:

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/14390-Arena-Commander-10-Released

The game's not even finished yet and it's a 20 Gig download. Elite: Dangerous ( 1.4 Gig download ) and most of that is probably graphics related.

I am having a hard time finding stuff to do in the game...

and just got attacked by some random NPC and got my ass handed to me, could not maneuver around them for shit. Game went from entertaining to frustrating like that.

And here you see what i meant with my previous post about MrAgmoore being a nuthead and how he tries to make every game that is NOT Chris Roberts new Baby "Star Citizen" look bad. He has done this in the past, will do it in the future, so there really isn't any suprise here. Pretty soon he will start with personal attacks and then some uncomprehensive babble. A real nutcase.

The whole planetary landing sequence was a non-interactive cutscene from the moment he pressed the "request landing permission" button to when he stepped out of the ship. And the zero-g combat... well, they're using CryEngine and even Crysis 1 had a zero-g section which, lest we forget, was the shittest part of the game. But, you know, well done for them for basically making a simple Crysis level then having some guy shout a lot of pseudo-special forces bullshit while playing it to make it seem in some way tactical and not just another forgettable sci-fi corridor shooter.

I'm sure a couple of years from now you'll be making posts just like these, slamming SC and cheerleading whatever the new next big thing on the (distant) horizon is.

Well stated and I agree with your observations. Everything is not for everyone. Why some people feel the need to whine and grief over something as trivial as a PC game, I'll never understand. If you don't like something, great, move along. The earlier pic posted by Colonel Sanders entitled "Stop liking what I don't like" summed it up nicely and was pretty much spot on.

I personally think there is LOTS of room for games of this genre in the market and that we don't have enough of them. I tend to like to withhold judgement until a game has had a chance to really prove itself. ED and SC are both pretty much in development still in my book. (Yes, ED is released, but it is very much still being developed and I expect it will continue to evolve.) I'm on the fence as to SC. It might turn into a really cool game or it might become one of the biggest scams perpetrated on gamers ever. I'm taking the wait and see approach on SC.

Oh, and having to sit and listen to everyone scream "I am right" becomes very tiresome fast. Enough already! :D

I'm looking forward to playing this, but I went to their "buy it now" page and it comes out to $62 and no trial demo. Ouch, no thanks!

Decided to get a X-52 pro joystick w/throttle so waiting for that to arrive before i really start playing it a lot. Joystick i have is okay, but as this isn't the only game i play that needs a joystick i figured getting a more modern one would be a no-brainer. :p
Now to look for a decent price for the pedals..lol

Yeah the early access price is a bit of a joke. If this were closer to $20-30 I'd be all over it.

You should go back to your troll cave. It was actually you idiots that mentioned and reminded me of Star Citizen. You can't refute any of my points, so you come up with random ad hominem attacks. You are almost as boring as E:D ( that's erectile dysfunction ).

Just lost all my money to some sort of bug

NPC combat: Is it Elite: Dangerous or Elite: Harmless? Opinion poll

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=81775

It doesn't take much effort to make Elite: Dangerous look bad, all you need to do is read page 1 of the general discussion forum. Carry on crying and shitting into your diapers now.

This game will end up free to play in 6 months and / or Frontier will declare bankruptcy. Or the rare thing will happen and carebears will support it ( like EVE online ).

I'm trying to protect people's wallets and you are just trying to protect your own self-interest.

I was maybe interdicted 1 or 2 times last night in 6 hours of game play from 6pm to midnight flying all over Empire (mostly, since that is the most rep I'm working on), Fed and Allied space. I covered well over 400ly last night, spend time flying between Nav Beacons and stations for bounties (I wish I was interdicted more). I don't know if you guys are flying wrong or something. Oh ya and my cargo hold was full most of the time, even when I went bounty hunting (mostly to let Rare Commodities recharge).

Cool story. Now move along, it doesn't help anyone for you to keep trolling it up in the thread for the game you don't like. Stop acting like you're doing everyone a favor by "warning" them about the game

got interdicted maybe 4 times to day? murdered the son of a bitch each time made total of 120k off the dumb asses

Easy money. I watch streamers to pick up strategies I might not think of and watched one yesterday that had a hard time in a Cobra against Vipers, if you are in a Cobra, you should be eating NPC Vipers alive, about the only thing Vipers are good at is flying fast in a straight line (people seem to have a hard time getting strafe controls down).

I had a random server connection drop out today and it literally booted me out while I was mid game. I guess it must have been a blip in the connection because I was able to resume the game right after; luckily my save started exactly where I left off.

I can see why some of the backers demanded refunds after Frontier pulled the plug on the offline mode. I didn't think the game would stop so abruptly if there was a connection error; I imagined it would behave more like Dark Souls in that the online elements would stop, while the rest of the game keeps moving, but apparently not the case. Kinda worrisome.

whats funny is the Cobra is better at flying fast in straight line more then Viper
with A rated power distributor and C or better thrusters you can boost to 420~425 forever
Viper tops out at 380 can cant keep boosting

fly it right and Cobra can eat any thing
there is not an NPC ship i cant kill in mine

w00t, finally found some fixed class 2 Beam Lasers for my Cobra! Found 'me in Goman (Empire) if anyone is looking for them. Still looking for a A grade D-Scanner.

Can someone point me to a good "How to play" tutorial? I have no idea what I'm even supposed to do in this game. Where do I find stuff? How do I find it? How do I get more fuel? How and where do I find space stations or outposts?? It's such a huge game it's overwhelming.

Frontier has a whole series of how to videos on YouTube, but I think the best way to learn is to spend a couple of days and watch various twitch streamers and ask them some questions. May I suggest Rezri.

Got the game... graphics looks very nice. Right now, I'm doing all the tutorials, to learn how to land, start and basic combat. Game runs on ultra in FullHD, and has no problem so far. But, I guess as I need new joystick, as my old ST290 Pro can't be properly calibrated and slightly yawns right all the time (I miss old days, when joysticks had calibration hardware buttons instead of software, and you could set tchem straight easily).

Guess I'm in market for something new, as the X360 pad is good for landing or goods delivery, while combat is problematic, I don't want to spend a fortune on Rhino. Thinking of Defender Cobra M5 - http://www.morele.net/joystick-defender-cobra-m5-556101/ and combining it with my G13. Or just a simple Extreme3D

Has this been nerfed or NPCs made more powerful?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_K1t91EO2g0

If not, I mean Jesus Christ, I could teach my grandma to own everyone with that overpowered Asp!

I mean its literally point and click, and you don't even really have to aim since the weapons are gimbaled.

Gimbaled weps don't mean much if you can get behind them and stay behind them. And Heatsinks and/or Silent Running can throw off gimbal lock.

unlock target now i have fixed weapons hehe
works amazing for shooting at people that use chaff

I use mainly fixed class 2 Beam Lasers now and my gimballed class 1 M-Cannons as backup. With my grade A Shield Charges I can last long enough in a sticky situation to jump out.

hehe think thats bad watch his review of the Python

Python vs NPC.

I understand that there should be noob NPCs, as they have different rankings, and the low ranked ones can be pushovers... but am I correct in assuming here from what I see that even the "dangerous" NPCs aren't really dangerous at all?

When this drops below the crazy $62 price tag, I'll be all over it
Ditto, I just picked up a Logitech Extreme Pro 3D joystick for this game for $10 (Microcenter has a $15 off coupon, no minimum, woot).

Considering initially they asked for $150, then $75, now $60 (I just now noticed the USD link: https://store.elitedangerous.com/usd/), I'm sure it will drop once more to what we pay for AAA titles that have been out a bit.

I think at $30 or $40 is a good buy-in point, and the other good thing is that even though its supposedly out of beta, I don't think it is. It looks like there is still a lot of tweaks and work being done, so in 6 months it'll likely be a lot more polished where hopefully the economy will be fixed and the AI will be a bit more intelligent and challenging.

Buddy of mine sent me this:

"Astra" voice-activation for Elite Dangerous. Pretty damn cool, you can use it to pull up your panels, manage your power, do jumps, ask it various questions, kinda neat. Although I would have preferred it say "Master" rather than captain, consider the ship its body, and make witty innuendo from time to time when certain events occur (collision, getting too hot, etc).

Looks nice, and doesn't cost a fortune. Too bad, that in that personal packs you can't edit the commands, only the name. Would love to turn it into HAL. Having your ship computer saying. " I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that" or "It can only be attributable to human error", would be epic :)

Still, will try it, when my new joystick arrives on Tuesday. Damned saitek POS broke on Christmas eve, and with x360 pad, I can just haul cargo, as combat is meh with it. Though, programmed my G13 for the game, and I can't wait till I'm in space again.

I'm using a Saitek Pro Gamer command unit instead of voice, it provides an analogue thumbstick and 21 keys, very intuitive to use without looking.
The thumbstick is perfect for docking control and the keys can be used to pull up any of the menu systems, landing gear, cargo scoop....
This is used along with a Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS-x joystick which is also very good.
I dont need my keyboard now.

There is another way to get the menus up using the joystick only.
Press and hold the joystick button for UI panel focus (on the throttle section with mine) and use the thumbstick on the joystick (normally used for selecting power to system/engines/weapons) to select which panel/tab.
Then the engine boost and cycle firegroup buttons on the throttle shift left/right through each tab and the joystick thumbstick moves u/d/l/r through the menus.

Its quicker to use the joystick or the command unit than voice command, this can be a lifesaver.
Once you get used to it, its very quick and you get to see other information you might otherwise miss.

Being a old "Final Frontier - Elite II" gamer I both look forward to this game...and I fear it will be to different for my liking.
But alas I have no much time for gaming anymore..
