DLSS 5 - Generative AI

Yeah that was the main thing, I was running MFG so the framerate wasn't too bad, but the input latency was awful.
yup and you got people here from the peanut gallery who aren't even running it first hand and praising it

i just can't believe it, i ran it too, wasn't spectacular (especially for all the cons described) and then my card burned out

"Nvidia predicts HUGE DLSS performance gains with new optimisations

Nvidia’s DLSS 5 tech may launch tomorrow, but that doesn’t mean its development is over. Nvidia has confirmed it plans to significantly improve DLSS 5 performance with a new wave of optimisations. Its optimisation curve hasn’t flattened yet, which means DLSS 5 can deliver much higher framerates.

Compared to Nvidia’s March 2026 reveal of DLSS 5, Nvidia has increased its performance by 5x. Based on Nvidia’s chart, it expects performance gains to exceed 7x in October. If Nvidia reaches 7.5x their original DLSS 5 performance, that would represent a 50% gain over today’s DLSS 5 performance. That’s a significant drop in DLSS 5’s performance overhead.

Since the initial announcement of DLSS 5 in March, our progress has been rapid: from running on dual GeForce RTX 5090s to now a single graphics card, we’ve achieved a 5X performance gain in just six months, making DLSS 5 available for all GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs and Laptop GPUs. This milestone stems from a combination of systematic pipeline optimizations, and neural model refinements that yield both faster execution and better image quality.
Our optimization curve isn’t flattening out, and we have further optimizations in active development. We expect upcoming model updates coming in the Fall to boost performance beyond today’s baseline. Backed by over a decade of DLSS expertise, we remain committed to continuously pushing the boundaries of performance and image quality, and this is only the beginning.

Ok with the power draw thing, I'll again say to everyone:

UNDERVOLT UR GPU!!1111one

Seriously people, it'll help, it is worth doing period.

I don't own NBA2K because, well, that kind of game is boring as shit to me so I tried the injector on Hitman 3. Pre DLSS 5 card was drawing 435 watts in the scene I loaded, with a max pin amperage of about 5.75a. 217fps using 2x FG since ray tracing is on and Hitman 3 has ass-slow RT. DLSS 5 injected, it was drawing 520 watts (same scene), 7.06a max per pin, 122fps with 2x FG.

So yes, big power draw increase... but also still well within the per-pin amperage budget. Undervolt. UR. Card.

Also of note it looks AMAZING in Hitman. No tweaking, just the default being slapped on the whole scene and it really elevated how it looked.

Sounds like eating crow on the way in your direction.
Better come up with another reason for being the crying far to vocal minority.

What's the easiest way to undervolt? I haven't really looked into it for the 5000 series much.

Yes the cards are bios limited, so a normal card won't exceed 600w. Your picture is of a peak wattage not solid usage, look at the graph. Notice how your picture was with gpuz set to max wattage not average or current for the reading. Good luck with your rma.
What do you mean normal card? Other vendor cards are also normal consumer products, are you suggesting only FE counts as a normal card?

And of course you have to get the max power draw, there is little point in anything else. It's not the average draw that will melt your connector, it is the peak. If the power limit is 600w it shouldn't draw more than that for any amount of time.

The reddit page linked on the hardforum page is what I followed. Basically you mod Afterburner and then just put in a curve. I went for the suggested 0.890 target and did that. Seems to do a good job lowering GPU power and not limiting performance. Of course not guaranteed to work but it sounds like that 0.890 target has become a recommended one because most 5090s have no issues with it. It doesn't cap power draw, as the power limit setting does which can be good and bad. The good is it doesn't seem to lower performance at all, however it does mean that if circumstances are right, the card can still hit 600w. I can get mine to hit 600w in Furmark. In real games though it has just resulted in a reduction in power and heat without costing measurable performance.

I did it just to reduce heat and power, but also probably a good idea to provide more overhead on the cable.

The tdp on the RTX 5090 is 600w. The lightning z is a halo xtreme oc version with an intentionally higher end board and power limits, intended for chilled water and ln2. Don't be disingenuous.

I'd love to see if this makes a huge difference in performance, image quality, etc?
I have to imagine it has a pretty negative IQ effect and that's why nVidia didn't do it. It looks like they are working on doing something like this, probably by integrating the upscaler with DLSS 5 so it does a better job preserving what it is supposed to. That's probably also where they expect the improvements from that line that goes way up in their performance graph to come from. There's a "WIP" upscaling setting exposed in their controls so they are clearly looking at it. My guess is that just doing it on the rendered image and then feeding it in to DLSS as it ends up screwing up too much of what it does, and thus making it an option they didn't want to go for.

Does the Optiscaler method work with HDR? Currently using RenoDX version since v4.7 has it working alongside RenoDX HDR.

Tried it in RDR 2 and Cyberpunk 2077, and I have to say the improvement in faces was pretty impressive. Everything looks much more realistic, but my 5080 had to pay the price for it as my FPS dropped about 66%.
So as it is now it could be to much for too little, but I am sure it will improve a lot in the coming months and then I will use it for most everything.
Especially Bethesda games with their "artistic choice" of moonfaced characters will benefit greatly from this.

People may hate it as much as they want, but I am happy to have the choice.

Wait your card burned out? I mean I heard about this on MLID, but I take that channel with mounds of salt.

I'm not saying DLSS 5 didn't cause your card to burn out, but surely that could have happened running something like Cyberpunk 2077 with path tracing and all the bells and whistles as well?
The problem is with the electrical connections and/or power management of the card, it really should be able to run any kind of heavy graphical load and be kept within the specs without burning out.

Hope you get it replaced for free, seems to be a known problem now.

MGS4 PC version.

For this game I think it enhances the characters a lot. Environments on the other hand basically get zero upgrades, even if I crank everything up to max. I don't bother to turn it on during gameplay, but I turn it on for cutscenes and this game has A LOT of cutscenes.

I've been using the Optiscaler version via DLSS5 Autopilot in Stalker 2. It's...fine. Performance is decent and it makes some things look better, other things just look overly sharpened and too much AO.

from nvidia’s official discord server, i have to agree after seeing gta 5 online piped through AI mods, all the characters had this same look and ai slop style.. got old fast

Like he said, art direction, movie tend to all look quite real with real humans and look vastly different and not all the same at all, because of set design, costume choice, art direction, casting, color palettes, grading, lights and so on. A Kaminski-Spielberg movie look quite different than a Scorsese-Richardson or Nolan-Pfister or the Coens/Villeneuve-Deakins one even when they film reality. Animated movie that go with heavy long pathtraced rendering can also look different.

As for escaping reality, it can still be with realistic graphic like Star Wars is escapisism it can look real with a totally fantasy world with unreal capacity/storyline/human behavior and many game go for the opposite, they want to produce a what if it would happen sci-fi scenarios (say a detroit becoming human), some flight simulator or sim cities, some horros movie to produce deep visceral fear, well everything that go with a photo realistic look.

And going for reality is just one of the training set / goal of a tech like this, you will be able to train your own dataset for any look you want with your own NR engine stack.

The moment photorealistic will happen, not a bad bet that it will be the moment an explosion of AAA will start to diverge from it or course, anything violent can become way too much...

I think "art direction" is often used as an excuse when one cannot make a good looking game.

More accurate than you even think, as 'art direction' is often cause by a limitation of technology/achievable realistic graphics of the time

Games like TF2 can and will still exist even in a world of DLSS5 - but most games, ever, especially once 3D hit and made it more possible/feasible - have aimed for realism as much as they could - as I said previously that's the point of all this/computer sims (of which games are a type/sort of) - to replicate reality, realistically/as is/1:1

People play games to escape reality, not realism.
Does this assume people do not escape reality when they watch Star wars, Games of Thrones or Lords of the Rings because of its photo realism ?

Most people playing GTA 6 (which is really realist graphic wise) will still be set in a world and doing stuff very far from their day to day reality and daily life.

Then why don't you only ever play 8bit 2D games or only text based games with no graphics to escape reality even more than when playing a 3D game?

The escape from reality is caused by immersion, of which technology, including realistic 3D graphics are an enhancement/enhancer of.

I actually said the opposite of that, are you just trying to find ways to disagree?

You too? Re-read what I wrote, for fucks sake, is everyone a contrarian today?

opinion?

You first
First what?

I said: people want to escape reality, not realism.

That means people want realism. Realistic graphics is realism.

Here is the AI explanation of what I meant:

the sentence suggests that when people seek distraction (through movies, books, or video games), they aren't looking for a world that is "fake" or "unrealistic"—they are simply looking for a way to avoid the burdens of their actual lives.
