DLSS 5 - Generative AI

First what?

I said: people want to escape reality, not realism.

That means people want realism. Realistic graphics is realism.

Here is the AI explanation of what I meant:

the sentence suggests that when people seek distraction (through movies, books, or video games), they aren't looking for a world that is "fake" or "unrealistic"—they are simply looking for a way to avoid the burdens of their actual lives.

Really interesting and trippy to see. Saw some discourse around before of people saying DLSS 5 doesn't do anything extra to faces; clearly it does, its a neural network it is going to pick up on patterns and human faces are an obvious one.

What I find really interesting is why it seems to default to a man with a turban. Maybe a lot of the training data came from that one character model Nvidia uses to show off DLSS5?

It's probably a distilled model with all the limitations of that.

Then why don't you only ever play 8bit 2D games or only text based games with no graphics to escape reality even more than when playing a 3D game?

The escape from reality is caused by immersion, of which technology, including realistic 3D graphics are an enhancement/enhancer of.
There are so many different games out there. Who are you to tell people what to play?

I'm just wondering—since you're defending DLSS5 so zealously—are you being paid, or are you just blinded by it?

DLSS5 clearly made one part look totally unrealistic. They showed a WNBA game and the stands looked full. Fake.
Neural rendering should not be anywhere near DLSS. It introduces artifacts, dramatically decreases performance, while dramatically increasing power. All of these things are antithetical to what DLSS does.

There are still artifacts with the upscaling and frame generation aspects of DLSS as far as I know. I don't think it's possible to completely eliminate the artifacts for any of it. I hope that with enough comparisons like this video it ought to make it clear that it's a matter of preference and not automatically "more realistic" like some have been claiming.

"We tested unofficial DLSS Multi Frame Generation support on RTX 40-series GPUs — new mod brings RTX 50-series exclusive feature to older cards, and it really works

Bottom line

Our experience with the purportedly Blackwell-exclusive Multi Frame Generation on RTX 40-series cards through modding suggests that there isn’t any glaring reason why Nvidia couldn’t enable the feature for Ada Lovelace cards, and that’s kind of wild given how heavily it was touted as a Blackwell-exclusive feature back when those cards launched.

At least as long as Nvidia doesn’t find a persistent way to lock it out, our experience is that MFG generally just works on Ada. Even if input latencies aren’t quite as low on those older cards as they are on comparable Blackwell hardware, all else equal, they’re still perfectly acceptable, even under the combined load of path tracing, DLSS Super Resolution, DLSS Ray Reconstruction, and MFG 4X in Cyberpunk 2077.

We only had time to test cards ranging down to the RTX 4070 for this quick look, but for folks looking to extend the useful life of their Ada hardware, the availability of MFG could certainly stretch those cards’ lifespans.

But our experience also shows that MFG on Ada isn’t perfect. It’s still a mod in active development, and the unusual and reproducible input latency behavior we charted at 1440p on RTX 40-series cards is the sort of unexpected pitfall you might expect from an unofficial implementation of the feature. Cross your fingers that it’s an issue that can be fixed by the community.

The fact that MFG works as well as it does on Ada, even in this modded form, also makes us wonder whether Nvidia might just enable official support for it at some point, given the apparently bleak prospects for gaming graphics card pricing and future hardware generations as the AI boom shows no signs of abating. And such a move would provide much broader and more immediate performance relief for gamers than re-introducing ancient silicon like the RTX 3060.

Given that Nvidia is already working on bringing DLSS 5 to RTX 40-series GPUs, maybe this mod will convince it to throw in official MFG support, too. Fingers crossed."

Doesn't surprise me at all. Ever since MFG came out and was all tensor based and didn't need the OFA I figured the 50 series exclusiveness was just to try and sell the cards. While the 50 series do have more tensor cores, and have NVFP4 acceleration, it is pretty clear from how it runs neither of those was necessary.

“DLSS5 simply pushes the power limit set by nVidia to its max. If the power connector burns out as a result, its because the connector is fundamentally poorly designed. This can happen with any game that fully utilizes the power limit. This is not a feature specific to DLSS5 mods.

This mod overloads the capability of the connector. I have witnessed this on my 5090 using gpu tweak. The pins exceed 9.2 watts when applied …”

Using it with OptiScaler 0.2 in Resonance, the results are quite remarkable, my 5090 rig puts in some serious work and 5070ti media rig sweats it out but I'd not want to go back to native rendering now. Excited to try it with control tomorrow, total game changer (yes my opinion has changed after a week of using...) and almost makes AMD cards second tier if they already were not...GTA VI needed to be PC first with DLSS5 :)

How does the 5070Ti run with it? That is what I have, I think DLSS 5 has a ton of potential, but I don't think I'd get a good experience with my hardware. Likely a next-gen feature for me.

Also would I need to worry about frying my GPU running this or is that concern relegated for the 5090? I'm assuming the 5090 since we are talking raw current, but idk, maybe its just the cable slipping that makes all nvidia GPUs with this connector susceptible to this kind of thing

Very well, FPS with FG 4x is 144+ (maxing out the S90F), latency is slightly high but not very noticeable for me. 5090 is 60-70% higher peformance obviously, often reaching the 240 cap on the 32 AW, think I need to move my 5090 rig to the livingroom since I much prefer the 77 S90F over the 32 AW for gaming lol.

Just finished Blood of Dawnwalker and STALKER 2 Cost of Hope with DLSS5 and figured I'd share some thoughts. So when it comes to these games specifically, and potentially other UE5 titles since both of these games are UE5, I have found image quality to be the best when no upscaling is involved. There is a reason why Nvidia chose to do NR on the final output resolution rather than give you the option to do it before upscaling which is that it simply looks worst once you throw upscaling into the mix. At 4K, running DLAA + NR at 4K simply isn't feasible in the majority of titles even for a 5090, a middle ground would be to use DLSS rather than DLAA to claw come back some frames and then run NR on the final 4K output resolution. This is a doable option for both of these games to allow playable frame rates, but when I compared image quality against 1440p DLAA + NR 1440p, the image quality of native 1440p+ DLAA simply looked better to me. There was far less image instability/flickering/boiling. A bonus on top is that running NR has a fixed cost and that fixed cost is lower at 1440p than it is at 4K. I can get well above 60fps playing at 1440p + DLAA + NR whereas at 4K + DLSS + NR I would be under 60fps. As for maximizing performance by running NR before DLSS using Optiscaler, yeah I would avoid that entirely because I simply don't like how that ended up looking and others on Reddit were finding the same.

So overall I've downgraded to a 1440p display for the time being because to me this is currently the best way to play with DLSS5. DLAA at 1440p is doable in just about every game for a 5090 allowing me to not use any upscaling at all for the cleanest image quality, the fixed cost of NR is lower at 1440p, power draw has also gone down by playing at 1440p, and I'm getting way better frames. Starting a NG+ run of Shadow of the Tomb Raider and it is freaking AWESOME with DLSS5. One day we will be able to have our cake and eat it too, 4K DLAA + NR at high frame rates, just not today.

Performance hit with control resonant is a bit excessive and the IQ improvements not as great as in Resonance so disabled it on that game for now, hopefully official support will be coming soon.

yo, timeout.

i just got my card back...

and reset my settings in NBA 2K27.. but disabled DLSS / NR, and all that.. got prompted for a new option that wasn't presented before... a High Quality Texture Pack ..

so the game exited and steam downloaded something over 1GB or so.. and i started the game up.. and you know what? doesn't seem like this DLSS 5 is any better than this high resolution texture pack that i didn't have installed before ... game looks great

i'm calling shenanigins... this texture pack wasn't offered before and so it was low res textures compared to DLSS 5 on top before !!! garbage.

The official high-resolution texture pack for NBA 2K27 downloads automatically on consoles, while PC players have reported missing or integrated files depending on their digital storefront launcher.

But as explained, more data in/to feed off of - the better DLSS5 does - so now apply it onto the game with the texture pack and see/show what it does (hypothetically - understandable if you don't want to risk frying your card again)

i don't care about that

it's a bad situation, they purposefully forced this to make DLSS 5 look great

with the high resolution texture pack i'm getting the DLSS 5 look that all the reviews are showing... and it's over 100+ watts less power draw AND my input latency is better

So then show us what DLSS 5 looks like with the texture pack because as you say you're comparing a handicapped (without texture pack) DLSS5 to an intended (with texture pack) DLSS5

it's a bad situation, they purposefully forced this to make DLSS 5 look great

Why would they do that if it will presumably look even better WITH the texture pack - aside from the fact that game bugs/mess ups, like a missing texture pack(s) do exist in and of themselves: https://www.shacknews.com/article/7...why-swtors-hi-res-textures-vanished-at-launch

i don't care about that. i'm already getting what everyone else is with dlss 5 but i don't need it.

somehow the game downloaded a high resolution texture pack over 25GBs and it looks great, drawing less power

And then the people with the texture pack AND DLSS 5 are getting more/even better graphics than you are now - that's my point - whether you care for it yourself or not

i don't see people getting that texture pack or even knowing about it.. that's my point

grok is saying it doesn't exist this year, and people are reporting problems finding it

i bet most if not all the reviews are done OOTB like i did it and so it's a bad comparison

i don't think you're getting it at all. the high res texture pack isn't being prompted out of the box

So then also doing DLSS5 with it is a good comparison as you say

Regardless - you're not the only one, no matter how many others are having issues with it there are others who will have it too (along with more and more as time goes on/it gets fixed) along with the ability to then turn DLSS5 on it - giving them the best of both worlds

Check the dates - these people have had it for a while before you
