That's why Hardcore isn't for you: the game is "work" that you do to amass possessions, and your possessions represent time you've "invested".
A Hardcore player knows you can't take it with you, and that the point of the game is to...play the game. If you die you just start again and have more fun.
Exactly. Hardcore just doesn't appeal to most people.
That said, if you allow yourself to get into it, you'll never play softcore again. When I first got D2, I beat the game with a lvl 27 necromancer. I made my first hardcore character and NEVER played softcore again. You just can't go back. Softcore is like playing with cheat codes at that point.
And I have to laugh at the people who say it's for "students and the unemployed." This is Diablo. Leveling a character takes a couple of days. If your maxed out character with maxed out gear dies, you rage uncontrollably for a few minutes and then start over. Eventually you become numb to it and it just becomes part of the process.
I couldn't even begin to count the number of lvl 90+ characters I lost in D2. Getting into a bad spot and trying to get out of the game.
