Diablo 3 Beta

There's no way I'm touching hardcore. I avoided it like the plague in D2.

The problem is that it's really cool in concept, but with their "we don't care if you get fucked" approach, it'd be silly to waste time on it only to lose it to some random shit.

HC play is definitely a different animal. Threat of loss gives an adrenaline rush you cant get in Normal. You also gear yourself differently, taking a shield instead of that two-hander for more DPS, taking a healing spell like Breath of Heaven instead of more DPS attacks.

The biggest benefit over Normal really is the lack of a real money auction house. RMAH attracts a different sort of player, and in hc mode everything will be earned in-game. Even as characters die you still keep the gold and anything in the stash, eventually allowing you to quickly gear out characters to replace high level deaths without needing a mule like in D2. Inferno-level hc characters will be a result of teamwork, caution and some luck.

Well you can't please everyone. People like Hardcore. People don't. IMO, the choice is better than none at all.

Worst reply ever. Not sure how anyone would be okay with losing their character because of any number of reasons a connection can be dropped.

It's a perfectly fine reply.
You play hardcore for the thrill that at any moment you may lose your character to anything, in game or a tornado that wipes your electricity.

People that don't want to lose hours/days of work should stick to normal where there's no real death penality.

Hmmm...That actually gets my hyped just thinking about it..

I disagree, I think if I were to play HC (Note: I did not in D2 and probably will not in D3 either) I would want my death to come from a failure in skill or stupidity, not some random-ass non-game-related occurrence that is completely out of my control.

A lot of people have stable enough connections to play HC, but let's say that everyone had a connection that had a 50% chance of disconnecting every hour. How many people do you think would play HC then? Or even at a 25% chance?

My guess is, not many.

It's a choice, play or not play. HC is here. HC isn't going away. TBH, I won't be playing it. I'm not that hardcore. lol...but the choice is there and who knows right? It could be FUN.

In fact, during Diablo 2, Blizzard even had to put a notice on the game before you started HC:

Note: Blizzard Entertainment is in no way responsible for your Hardcore character. If you choose to create and play a Hardcore character, you do so at your own risk. Blizzard is not responsible for the death and loss of your hardcore characters for any reason including Internet lag, bugs, Acts of God, your little sister, or any other reason whatsoever. Consult the End User License Agreement for more details. Blizzard will not, and does not have the capability to restore any deceased Hardcore characters. Don't even ask. La-la-la-la-la, we can't hear you...

Advice by many already: Take a team with you and venture together. It'll help "survive" if something does indeed happen.

Good info. I didn't know that was their attitude before, i suppose they're at least being consistant. Except now, without a RMAH, there's even more incentive to play HC.

Meh either way though. I'm not hardcore enough to have my character deleted by blizzard and the have them tell me to fuck off.

I don't know. That's a good question they should figure out, i reckon.

What a laughable response. It is literally not possible for you to remotely know the difference between me getting disconnected because my power went out, and me getting disconnected because I turned the breaker off, because as far as my PC is concerned they're the same thing!

I can't wait for the third party hardcore ladder sites based around botting to form up and sell items illegitimately just to spite the people who seem to think that it won't happen.

My opinion is, if someone really wants to yank the power cord on their machine or flip the breaker every time they're about to die, so be it. Eventually their machine/hard drive will crap out due to the constant power drops and justice will be served.

...and most importantly the lack of RMAH for hc, hc mode may be the place to be.

You know, if you don't like the RMAH, DON'T FUCKING USE IT! If you follow that one simple rule, its mere existence won't make one shit of difference.

The smart ones will just unplug their NICs. ;)

The reason why they are not doing RMAH on HC characters is they don't want people (Specifically ignorant people) to buy all these items for there HC character and then get killed and complain to Blizzard that they got cheated out of money.

Also, If you have to buy your items when playing a HC character, you are not Hardcore.

I don't think your scenario is D3 Hardcore-specific: how many people would play online games at all if their connection had a 50% chance of crapping out every hour? Anyone that has had a flakey connection before (pretty much everyone) knows how infuriating it can be.

As someone who has played a lot of D2 Hardcore, of course you want your death to come from something you could control, but it's the nature of online gaming and something you are aware of up-front. If your character dies just make a new one; it's not that big of a deal. You do the "stare unbelievingly at the screen for 30 seconds" routine (disbelief), perhaps utter a few choice curse words (anger), sigh deeply and exit back to the main menu (acceptance)...then do it all over again!

Part of the "fun" of Hardcore really is starting anew and working your way through the game. The rush you get when you're on the verge of being killed (or in some serious trouble) is not something found in normal mode. I'm sure I had a few deaths due to circumstances beyond my control, but the vast majority were to legit game-related events.

If you can't bear to lose "your stuff" or consider all your playing time "wasted" if your character dies then Hardcore mode is definitely not for you. If, however, you like playing on the edge and consider your playing time well-spent regardless of the outcome, then your deeds of valor will be remembered.

This seems like a bit of an extreme example. If people were disconnected every other hour, a lot of people would just say "**** THIS" and go drink a beer in front of the TV or something. HC characters need to be punished for DCs, otherwise people would just yank out their network cable when the shit hits the fan.

People with crappy connections already know this and HC doesn't likely appeal to them. For the rest of the world, HC is a pretty good way to bring some drama and suspense to gaming.

I will probably make one toon for the normal mode of the game, learn my mistakes on that, then make a second character for HC and slowly poke my way through the game :D

I agree. Learn the bosses and mobs in normal and switch to HC. The people you meet in HC are different animals and its a good point that you remove the auction house element from the game by going there.

Reminds me of my D2 HC days when I was still using a 56k modem. Good times >.>

lol, that was a challenge wasn't it.
My stupid ISP used to disconnect me after 10 hours or so, always forgot about it, created some interesting situation :)

I'm really much more focused on character losses due to blizzard fucking up... i can't count the times their WoW servers went down at launch.

If D3 launch is anything like that, there will be lots and lots of HC deaths due to their servers crashing.

Also, this:

My opinion is, if someone really wants to yank the power cord on their machine or flip the breaker every time they're about to die, so be it. Eventually their machine/hard drive will crap out due to the constant power drops and justice will be served.

I'd rather them have a penalty in place (if you D/C more than 5 times in x amount of time, bla bla) vs an attitude of "we don't care about your character loss, even if it was our fault"

Agreed.

And in response to others that quoted my post(s), I understand that people don't have to play HC, all I'm saying is that it seems like a broken game mechanic if a random disconnect can screw you over, that's all.

But that's the appeal of Hardcore mode. I honestly see nothing wrong with it. If you take issue with things like that then it's not for you.

You have no idea what you're talking about. This part of HC mode. It can't be removed. It simply cannot be controlled. You accept it when you play.

Lagging? Better not play hardcore. Storming? Better not play hardcore. Crappy PC? Better not play hardcore.

Did I lose MANY characters to disconnects and lag when I played D2 HC? Absolutely. Did I blame Blizzard? No.

I'm most likely not even getting D3 until well after release, but I feel compelled to put a stop to "softies" commenting on "broken game mechanics." HC mode is not for most people. It truly is for the hardcore.

I'm really much more focused on character losses due to blizzard...

It will be interesting.

*Blizzard's servers hickup and temporarily go offline*
*The cries of thousands of HC characters are heard echoing out through the night, as they stand helpless, about to die to a Carrion Eater*

:p

I can see it already.

All these folks worried about the "issues" with hardcore mode will "express concern" until they add ways to get your character back.

*facepalm*

For only 25 dollars, revert character back to yesterday!

I agree. Putting hours and hours into developing a character and grinding loot only to have it all destroyed by a random disconnect is pretty "hardcore". I guess most rational folk aren't that "hardcore".

But that's the appeal of Hardcore mode. I honestly see nothing wrong with it. If you take issue with things like that then it's not for you.

I thought the appeal was that it was challenging and there were real consequences for rushing into a situation without being prepared. I personally don't consider the possibility of losing all your shit to a random disconnect all that appealing, but I guess some people apparently do.

Agreed, I would imagine most of those it would appeal to are students or unemployed; with the limited gaming hours I have, I would be furious if I lost a character to a random Comcast timeout.

Yeah, I think I would just about punch a fucking hole through my monitor. Guess I'm not "hardcore" enough for Hardcore.

that's the definition of hardcore. then you go buy a new monitor or have a few spares in the closet :D

Ugh, had a member in one of my old CS teams that kept spare mice on him, as he had a tendency to break them (and our eardrums in the process) by slamming them on the desk when he got frustrated.

Are all you guys' internet connections really that colossally shitty? Or are you just grabbing on to one of the few things there is to bitch about just so you can hear yourselves bitch about something? I honestly can not even remember the last time I got disconnected from a game because of an "internet issue".

My connection is mostly reliable, but I've had a few disconnections from World of Warcraft within the the last year all from my internet crapping out for a few minutes at time.

I'd be pissed if my internet crapped out and I lost a shit load of hard work. But I'm going to be play it safe and not play hardcore. I don't have the time to risk losing that much potential time and hard work.

Ditto. A think I had a 6 hour power outage last year when a car hit a telephone poll and again sometime this year for a similar reason. My ISP drops my internet connection randomly about once every 2 months or more and it'll take 5 minutes to 4 hours to come back online. Usually it happens late at night like 3:00am when I'm gaming than say 8:00am.

It's not hardcore if there's a safety net.

End of story.

Hardcore = You take your licks, then get up, dust yourself off, and get back into the fight.

If you can't do that, Hardcore is not for you. It is not meant for you. It was never meant for you. Forget it exists, you'll be happier.

Hardcore exists in D3, as it did in D2, for people who are willing to take the risk.

I propose an alternative for anyone who has any complaint about the risk that their internet connection fucking them up.

I call it "Halfcore".

It works like this: Roll a normal character, play it, if it dies because your internet connection fails, resurrect and keep playing, if it dies because you fucked up, delete it.

Simple.

Yeah you won't get the hall of heroes stuff or whatever, but I don't care about that because you aren't Hardcore and don't deserve it, because you weren't willing to take the same risks as a real Hardcore player.

I remember playing D2 hardcore.. the awesome feeling of finally making it up through Hell and able to start Baal runs only to be destroyed by lag or a PKer. I had an Amazon and a Sorceress both around level 80 and they both died to PKers. I think after that I decided to go back to softcore. :p Hardcore characters also had that awesome "combat stance" in chat channels that softcore characters didn't have. I was always jealous of that because they looked so badass.

Dude, just don't play hardcore then. Jesus. You're part of the demographic hardcore is not for. I'm guessing you never played Diablo 2 HC either. If you did, did you complain about it then? You're arguing just for the sake of arguing. No one is going to make fun of you for playing softcore. In fact, I think only masochists like playing hardcore. :D

That's why Hardcore isn't for you: the game is "work" that you do to amass possessions, and your possessions represent time you've "invested".

A Hardcore player knows you can't take it with you, and that the point of the game is to...play the game. If you die you just start again and have more fun.
