Destiny 2

The shader thing doesn't really bother me. I would never pay money for them and I got a ton in Destiny 1 that just ended up getting deleted so at least now they are a bit more rewarding.

The paid mods thing I don't like, but by the sounds of it they are only rare level and you can get legendary ones in game that are better. That only lets people get an early advantage as opposed to an end game advantage.

Given how people are literally racing to get to endgame, I’m going to say we’ll see soon enough if the P2W mods will be worth anything at all.

I'm interested in seeing how everything is balanced between getting free engrams and how bad the grind is. Since you do get them free for every level above 20, but the question is how long that will take.

Bungie confirms Jaguar is holding the consoles back. How many of us have been saying for ages that you can't just toss a more powerful GPU into a system while ignoring the CPU?

I'm not a fan of the "let the game mysteriously swap to 60fps in multiplayer" philosophy. It makes the two modes disjointed. With Destiny I think that would be amplified since the modes aren't really that different. Once you start playing a game at 60fps, there' just no going back. Uncharted can partially get away with it since MP might as well be a different game. With Destiny, not so much.

Microsoft's X-BOX ONE should of used Threadripper instead Jaguar is 8 core low clock running CPU

A point that's getting lost in the "shader/microstransaction": flap is: You earn a lot of this stuff for free anyways as you're playing the game. Skins, mods, engrams. All kinds of loot.

Uncharted, even in its MP, was different - I find third person games to mess with the way the player perceives the camera and motion. I was tempted to jump in on the PS4Pro but I just couldn't do it.

But you fast forward the process with micro - hence the notion it's P2W. I mean, Warframe is the same way, right?

Microtransactions are a weakness of mine. Not crates, though. Screw crates.

$20 for a cool mount? Or a special skin? Sign me up. Yeah I'm that guy ruining the gaming industry...

Oh hush, you.

Threadripper runs far far too hot for XBX. Beyond that, it would have drastically increased cost and wouldn't even have been ready by the time MS finalized all the hardware contracts. Normal Ryzen wouldn't even have been ready to go.

Why would Bungie change this, though? They're pushing micro-transactions, and this is clearly a big part of it.

fan uproar has a way of getting developers to tweak things...this shader issue is generating a lot of negative buzz among fans of the game so I'm sure Bungie will address it in some way

good for you. don't let pent-up nerds on the internet tell you how to spend your money. spend away man.

Wait a minute, there are microtransactions and lootboxes? Why can't we have a straight game anymore? I'd have more respect for these fuckers if they would do away with all this bullshit and just charge their target price out of the gate.

I swear man, every time I see a game and am like "hmm, that looks cool maybe i'll give it a shot!" I find that it's either :
-Riddled with some bullshit DRM (uplay)
-Pre-order bullshit
-Microtransactions
-Or some other fucked up gambling mechanic

micro-transactions that only effect character appearance doesn't really matter to me...as long as it doesn't affect gameplay

Thats the problem, in a game like this half the fun is customizing your character. So yeah, appearance is sorta the gameplay.

true, fashion has become a big part of pvp and co-op games these days...not so much for single player games

Wait, what?!

for PC in the Open Beta. Controller users could use aim assist in PVP. It was so bad that some people were able to find a way to use aim assist on the mouse as well.

Just a word of warning to people who want to try the PC version. IT is possible Bungie will not fix it, but who knows.

Update: Destiny 2 director Luke Smith has addressed the single-use shaders controversy on Twitter, though he doesn't indicate whether it'll change or not. "Shaders are earned through gameplay: levelling, chests, engrams, vendors," he wrote. "We expect you’ll be flush w/ Shaders as you continue to play

"When you reach level 20, Shaders will drop more often: vendor rewards, destination play and endgame activities. Shaders are now an ongoing reward for playing. Customization will inspire gameplay. Each planet has unique armor and Shader rewards

"With D2, we want statements like 'I want to run the Raid, Trials, or go back to Titan to get more of its Shader' to be possible."

I honestly don't think skins would be enough to keep me grinding.

Tangible in-game benefits, though...

Destiny 2 expansion Curse of Osiris appears on the Microsoft Store

Called Curse of Osiris, the expansion will feature "new story missions and adventures" set on the planet Mercury

"Journey through time and space to learn the secrets of Osiris, avert a dark future, and rebuild the ties between the legendary Warlock and his greatest student—Ikora Rey," the listing says. Players will explore the "mysterious 'Infinite Forest,'" earn new themed weapons, armor, and gear, and take part in new competitive activities and multiplayer arenas

No, Destiny 2 isn't pay-to-win

Right now, a lot of Destiny players are wondering whether the bright engrams are worth buying with real money, and whether they’re necessary in order to prepare for the harder content...short answer? No, you don’t need them for gameplay and they’re really expensive, so the only reason to buy them is to collect emotes and cosmetic items

For the much longer, more detailed answer, keep reading...Destiny 2 is mucking a few things up, but it’s not offering you a for-pay advantage...

Has everyone finished the game already they need DLC?

It was a leak. MS is really good at leaking things lately. They leaked Black Manta for Injustice 2 and I believe they've leaked some other stuff this year as well.

So what is the verdict?

Should I get this game on PS4 or wait out the PC release?

Concerns for PC are the game not holding a population, hacks, and possibly the aim assist (but I really don't PVP so it wont matter).

Really want to wait for PC but don't want to get burned. This game may not hold up well on PC, different audience.

As long as the port is as good as it was in the beta (which, apparently, was a five month old build) then I think the game will find an audience on the PC. I doubt the audience will be as strong as it is on consoles, but I'd be surprised if it outright died. The PC version will be the definitive version of the game. Even on the Pro the game is locked to 30fps, while the PC version is capped at 200 fps (if it remains the same as the beta). Even if you wait until after the PC version is out it'll be alright.

Trying to force myself to wait for PC since it's already ordered but the PS4 Pro bundle keeps calling my name. BUY ME BUY ME BUY ME... damn voices get out of my head!

There's no chance it won't hold up on PC. It's on Battle.net. Blizzard's got an insanely rabid fanbase of PC players, and it'll be shoulder to shoulder with Overwatch, Diablo 3 and the rest.

As for hacks, every competitive MP on PC has them, and the truth is they only affect people that aren't very good at MP shooters to begin with. Its a phenomenon that's always overblown by children.

Yep, that is what I bought. I should have it Monday, assuming Amazon ever gets off its ass and ships it. Sony does such a great job with their white paint jobs on consoles that I couldn't resist.

[This review is based on a retail build of the game provided by the publisher. My Warlock's Power Level at the time of the review is 270, my Titan and Hunter completed the story, and the Nightfall was completed.

Worth noting. This means deadline-itis. This reviewer had to crunch and grind. How much enjoyment does anyone get out of anything when it turns into a chore like that?

As it stands, it's clear he likes the game all told. 75/100 is hardly a bad score.

I expect an 8/10 game at minimum by the time I get it on the PC. That's good enough for me. If it gets even better over time which it likely will given precedent, then great. :)

The game is going to evolve just like the first one did. Comparing Destiny 1's state today vs back when it came out speaks for itself really.

6 months from now that same reviewer may raise his score to at least 80 percent depending on what they do and especially after that first DLC hits.

Destiny 2 is basically what the first game was supposed to have been. No more. No less. It's not going to reinvent any wheels. Neither did the first one and he's right about the hype machine.

Pretty strong start on the consoles. I sincerely hope they address some things for the PC version before it comes out starting with the aim assist issue because aside from that there is really no good reason this can't be at least as comparable of a success on the PC as well.

Something to keep in mind about that score: DToid did not take part in Acti's review event for the game and the site makes use of the entire review scale. So 75% is a good score from them. In fact, it means "
GOOD
Solid and definitely has an audience. There could be some hard-to-ignore faults, but the experience is fun."

Given what Chris said in the review, I'd say that that description is fair. Destiny is what it is. This is just a better version of that.

Looks like we have some real Destiny buffs in this thread. I missed the Destiny 1 train and jumped on board with Destiny 2. I bought a third playstation, three copies, and I have my sons (11 year-olds and I playing together). I've read a mixture of things out there, so maybe you guys can set me straight on some matters. Your input would be awesome.

1) PS Plus vs not PS +: My understanding is that I can invite my boys to a fire team, but they cannot create their own. We should be able to enjoy the bulk of the content, right? Otherwise, do I have to get them both PS +?
2) There is no "holy trinity" in Destiny, we can play whatever we want; however, to do raids later on, there are some roles? If yes, then I want them to start learning some role-based stuff, if not, screw it.
3) In case 1) above requires them to have PS + to group, are there any meaningful benefits to grouping as opposed to just "running together", or is it a case where even running around together because the game sessions are all separate and we're not in the same "lobby" so to speak.

I've read different things and reading about Destiny on the internet is like looking up medical symptoms. Dunno what the heck is going after reading it all.

Thanks ya'll.

All answers based on Destiny 1:

1) As far as I am aware, you need PS+ to engage in any of the multiplayer features, including coop. During the Destiny 1 beta it was possible to invite people without PS+, but that was removed afterwards. Not sure if it changed for D2, but I doubt it.
2)For most coop stuff, including story missions and strikes, it isn't as important to have one of each class. Nightfall Strikes and raids make it more important to have a mix of classes, but even then they're not impossible without that perfect mix. The biggest thing with every class is to learn their abilities and develop specific builds for what you want to do. For story missions and most strikes that shouldn't be all that important but as you do harder content that becomes more of a factor.
3) If you are not running together in a Fireteam there is no guarantee that you will all end up in the same instance for public areas. For private instances (anytime the game tells you "Respawning is restricted" you are in a private instance) you must be in a Fireteam to play with other people. Each public area of Destiny only allows X amount of players at the time (varies based on the area) and it is random which instance of the public area players end up in, unless they are in a Fireteam together.

I don't see it like that at all...the reviews that came out last week were pretty much all early impression articles based on a Bungie/Activision sponsored event a few weeks ago...the 'real' reviews with the additional content and live servers will slowly be trickling out this week...these are the real full reviews...that being said having never played the original game I enjoyed the PC beta and plan on buying it if I can get an Nvidia bundle code for ~$25...I don't think I would want to pay $60 for this (but this can probably be said about a lot of games)

I think it's more that nowadays you have to separate the

"publisher invited us to an event for early access so we're all going to say the same (nice) things (so we keep getting invites)"

vs

"this is retail code we are sprinting through in order to get you a review before we lose the page views"

Which I mean, pick your poison I guess?

Even back in the day of monthly magazines there was still that "get through the game fast" concept. MMOs and games like Destiny are always tricky things to review for any reviewer. What do you consider "complete" or "enough to judge"? Reviewers did get code prior to launch, so it isn't like they've only been playing since day 1. He had an early impressions article up 4 days ago (launch day) and he was almost done with the story by then. So that is another 2 1/2-3 days to go through endgame content. If he played the game 5-8 hours per day (and some reviewers will spend even more time per day on games) that is a pretty good amount of time spent seeing endgame stuff.

for an open world RPG type of game I can see how sprinting through can maybe not give you an accurate view of the game as a whole but for a game like Destiny 2 I don't think taking your time or sprinting through will really make a difference...as long as you play all the content and experiment with the different classes

just to clarify what I said about the game not being worth $60...I think there's definitely $60 worth of content for hard core Destiny fans...maybe once I finish Destiny 2 on PC I'll see the game differently
