Dell U2412M

Thinking of grabbing this today... I dunno though, I've seen it get as low as $319 during completely run-of-the-mill sales.

Plus, I'm still weighing it against the ZR2440w, which TFT still hasn't published their review for, and the S24A850DW, which seems to have pretty abysmal backlight bleed, but might not forever...

Decisions.

I've been looking at this for months, finally bit the bullet for the $299 deal. Plan to use it for gaming/coding work. Estimated delivery is Dec 6. Currently have a E207WFP (I believe). I have one question though: I know it has no 16:9 mode, but what happens if you supply it with a 16:9 signal? Stretching?

Thanks,
~Rock

It's true but I don't think the actual difference is as profound as that .gif makes it out to be. If you use the GPU to scale you'll end up with black bars and the correct 16:9 aspect ratio.

So..I ended up impulse buying 2 more of these today. Eyefinity inc?!

If price is a concern, I'd just jump on the U2412M whenever you're up for it...I don't think you'll be able to find the HP for $300 anytime soon, the older ZR24W (which I was considering before the U2412M was released) only dropped to $350 when the new model was announced, until then the lowest you'd see it at was $380. You're right in pointing out that this isn't a particularly deep discount tho, they were commonly sold for $320 a few weeks ago, and I got two for $300 around that time as well.

Is it true that on a game like Starcraft II you will see less of the map on a 16:10 monitor?

This isn't right guys.

The assertion that 16:10 is "less" than 16:9 is fundamentally flawed because aspect ratio is not a pixel count.

An 800x450 smartphone screen is a 16:9 display. So does it show more stuff than the 16:10 Dell U2412M? Obviously not, because aspect ratio has nothing to do with how many pixels you have.

This is true even when the comparison is between two 24" monitors.

The U2412M is 1920x1200. A similarly sized 16:9 monitor will be 1920x1080. Therefor the U2412M displays more content than it's 16:9 peers... not less.

That animated gif shows you what gaming would be like on monitors that do not exist. Forcing 4:3 and 16:10 ARs on a 16:9 monitor produces nonsense resolutions that no display manufacturer would ever put on the market.

It has to do with the way the game was designed.

Just picked up one of these. Coupon code 209KF?MB5ZJ728 stacks with the current deal for another 5% off - today only.

This. It's a SC thing.

Sorry to get off topic. Will post this in the other thread instead. I did want to know if this particular monitor would handle the 1080p though, hence my post.

If you are using a computer, it is a non issue, you can have black bars or stretch, you define in your graphic card drivers.

If you hook up a PS3, it will stretch AFAIK.

Yep, no 1:1 mapping, it's been asked and answered a few times in the thread. It's only really an issue with consoles, on a PC you just choose how to handle it as stated above.

Ok, thanks. It stretches on my current display, from 720p to 1050, so this should be arguably better.

I missed the Black Friday deal and it's up to $339 now. :(

Good price, or hold on for the possibility of another holiday season sale?

Anything under $350 is decent considering what else is out there IMO, but it'll probably drop again within 3-4 months, just the way Dell display deals go.

You could try calling and talking to a rep. I think people have had some success getting expired deals that route, though BF deals may be different.

10e, daemos, somebody: how does this perform as a sole monitor for photo editing?
77 pages is just way too much to read in one day i got to page 14 and im burned.

i stumbled on this page as i researched ips panels for photoshop/photo editing (srgb is good enough for me, dont need wide gamut right now, just need srgb to be on point out the box)

Check earlier in the thread, mid to upper 50s (pages) or thereabouts for the specifics on a helpful Dell US sales rep.

Me? Or the guy I was quoting? I got them (2x) for $300 months ago when the going price was $320, just got a random rep on the phone and he quoted me that price without any prodding (plus $1 promo shipping), came out to $643 shipped & w/tax for two of them.

I couldn't use that one rep's # because I'm in Puerto Rico and they have a local Latin America office. It's definitely worth calling or even using live chat (what I did) to speak to a rep regardless of whatever deal/pricing is being advertised, cause they'll often undercut it (particularly if you're getting more than one imo).

I recently bought 2 dvi to dp cables (all hail monoprice) thinking they would work from the Nvidia GTX 460 to the my u2412m. Not getting anything on screen. I was under the impression that this would work.. Do I need active adapters or something?

Yes. HDMI and DVI are essentially the same thing.

DVI and DP are totally different signals.

What's a good stand for two of these? Is there any advantage to buying the one from Dell with my monitor? Because stands are like $150 there and $50 on Amazon...

Just grabbed one this morning and I'm wondering the same thing. I currently have a 24" Gateway FHD2400. Any suggestions on a good stand/mount for two 24" monitors?

Glad I found this thread. I just spec'd my new computer build and needed a monitor. I currently use a HP vs 19 that was purchased back in 2005, so any new unit will be an upgrade at this point. I really wanted a 27" monitor, but all of them seem to be wide-gamut units and I really only need standard gamut. The HP ZR27 looked promising, but it had limited options, especially limit OSD adjustments, plus it's a wide-gamut unit. I had narrowed my choices down to Dell 2412, Dell 2410 and HP ZR24w, but this thread pushed me to the Dell 2412. I caught the cyberspecial today $315 shipped. I negotiated an additional 5% off, but then the sales guy came back and offered to take the 5% off of the 1 year extended warranty and not the monitor; I declined. I don't believe in those extended warranties, besides the 3 year warranty is good enough for me.

For anyone that bought during the Black Friday deal, has your monitor shipped yet? Mine is still showing as "In Production."

Dear Customer,
We wanted to let you know that there is a delay with one or more items in your order.

Based on the latest available information, we have adjusted the Estimated Delivery Date and are confident your order will be delivered on or before 12/8/2011

We are sorry for the delay and appreciate your patience.

In my country this monitor costs 10 euros more then it was when I have bought mine a month ago.
And there aren't many resellers who actually have it in stock. I guess buoyant demand has something to do with it.

So I decided to call them up. They claimed that there wasn't a delay with my order, and that they will get it to me on or before 12/6/2011 "to the best of their ability." The rep also said that they would follow up with me in 1 or 2 days, so we'll see what happens

For sRGB photo editing you would be fine with this screen.

Turn the contrast down to 70 or 71 and turn the blue down in custom color. I was using 96 red, 93 green, and 86 or 87 blue in custom color mode on it.

The ZR2740W is standard gamut but it has no scaler at all. The OSD only has on/off and brightness up and down.

Also got the "delayed" email. Le sigh.

REALLY wanted to get this monitor in time to finish post processing some photographs to have professionally printed and framed in time for Christmas. The days are running short ><

Okay, so I've read pages 50-60 looking for the Dell Rep and didn't find it. Bottom line, coming from a calibrated CRT, doing lots of Photoshop work, 3D Rendering, and gaming (mostly WoW, Portal, games like that), will this monitor be a good suit for me? It will be the first LCD that I actually purchase, because I'm against them on principle :p Haha not really, but without starting a whole argument, let's just say that a CRT has everything I need, but mine is finally dying and I don't have $1000 for an FW900. Would this be a good replacement?
