Computer Abuse, what ticks u off?

People who have no clue about basic computer maintenance and troubleshooting. I have seen my fair share of people who let their computers become bloated with spyware and unnecessary background applications. It makes me much more furious if I built the computer for them because I always install anti-virus and anti-spyware software in the machine.

This one time there was this like 13 year old kid with a bottle of Coke eating some greasy potato chips next to a $3,000 Sony laptop... I went over to her and I was like 'You can't drink that next to the computer' she just looked at me like I was crazy... Thankfully she never did spill it, but God, I kept my eyes on her....

Eating/Drinking near high-end computer equipment.

Ok you would kill me I see my stack as a cup holder. Its big and flat and just above me on the TV stand. Ive always just yanked out my Memery keys. What else. my file system is ok though i dont get what that was to do with fragmentation. I do hate people touching my monitor.

My pet peave is when people move my mouse (Im left handed). Ive seen some kid drag his prob 5000 Dell XPS laptop down the hall by its lock cable. I am anal about dusting my computer.

Hmm I think thats it. And now you guys wont let me touch your computers.

People who make the assumption that, because I'm such a nice guy, and because I know so much about computers, I won't mind fixing their computer or their parent's/uncle/best friend/cousin's computers, and I won't mind working for free.

I am generally helpful to people if they have problems, but theres always that person who takes an act of kindness for granted and then expects me to be their personal IT bitch. Its not so much working for free, its that these people don't even offer a few bucks or some beer or anything, just expect me to come by and fuck with their computer for hours while they interrupt me and ask all kinds of questions that they never remember the answers to, but manage to turn a 2 hour job into an all day thing.

Thats when you pick up the coke and say "Can I hold this for you" and stand there and stare at her. No one likes someone staring at them. And all you did was help her :D

My roomate last year felt that just watching me do something on my computer was enough for him to know how to do it, despite the fact that he had NO clue what I did. Oh man I loved watching him try and fix someones network after he saw me run "ipconfig". Took him at least 10 minutes to realize that just typing that does nothing other than return info, and that I had typed more when he looked away...

And then when he told me that he was going to get one of "those dual core thingys"

WTF, same as me dude, anybody touching my screen gets an instant WTF SLAP....
cant stand that shit especially after a good 30 minutes cleaning it and makin sure it is pristine, for some nub to come put his greasy paw prints all over it, arggggggggghhhhhhh

Constantly helping people with their computer problems. I'm installing a video card tomorow, along with a video game. And installing programs on another guys computer because he doesent know how.

Also, tons of icons on the desktop drive me nuts.

My personal pet peeves:

1. People who come to you looking for advice on a computer, but argue with you every step of the way as if you're magically wrong because they think so.

Example: Friend of mine who is guilty as hell of this bought Diablo 2 for his laptop. He had some weird error that I remember I always got on a fresh reformat on my own computer and reinstalling Diablo 2 for the first time always gave me that error. Well, I couldn't remember what it was so I googled it and found out he just needed a video card driver update and to update his DirectX to the latest. He argued with me to no end, claiming that there was no way in hell it should need that just because Diablo 2 wasn't using DirectX at its current level, even when I showed him my findings to back my suggestion. I said fuck it, let him figure it out on his own. 3 hours later of bitching at me on IM he downloads the latest DX and voila, it works now.

2. People who look over my shoulder wanting to know what I'm doing, then get pissed off because I don't let them see by logging out or locking my desktop. if you want to know so badly, ask me. If you have to be sneaky about it, that just tells me you're not up to anything as good as you suspect me of doing.

3. The people in #2 still continuing to sneak on me, even when I have flat out told them to just ask.

4. People who read/subscribe to a computer magazine and think that alone will make up for the years of experience many of us have.

5. People making ludicrous claims, like having an Athlon XP Barton core that will smoke any Athlon64 out there. (Yes, a friend of mine told me he heard someone at BB say that once)

6. People who see emails they never sent to themselves in their inbox, then click the link and get infected to hell, only to call me up and ask what to do now.

7. People who click every damn link on the web and wonder why they have so many issues, why they get so much spam, and ask why they shouldn't click on ads in the first place. When I ask them if they turn the TV on specifically to watch commercials, they look at me funny and go "Now why would I do that!? That's just stupid!"

8. People who use their computers for little else than email, that think their children, especially those with boys, think they are so innocent when their computer suddenly gets porn popups like hell out of nowhere, and their child genius of computers is doing everything to hide them until a "solution" can be found. Then even when I present the evidence of the culprit, they look insulted at the idea that their kid is on the Internet, using their computer to look up porn and they went to the wrong place for it.

9. People that go to all these game sites that are infected to hell with spyware and adware, then bitch and complain to me that there's so much crap on their computer and it's running so slow even though "they don't do anything" on the computer.

10. People who have their computer on the floor and turn it on by pushing the button in with their toe. Look people, if computers were meant to be started or operated by your feet, they'd come with kickstarts and foot pedals, not mice and keyboards, or you'd mod one.

11. People who use their tower for footrests. (Namely, my mother)

12. People who smash the buttons on their mice "to be sure it's pressed down right". (my grandfather)

13. People who blow $2000 and up on their parts but spend less than $50 on their power supply, and don't even get a decent one at that.

14. People who buy the cheapest Dell computer they can get their hands on and expect it to be a gamer's machine just because they blew $50 on a PCI video card that they added in themselves..

15. People who expect me to fix their computer for free just because they know me

16. People who think they know more about computers than me even though they haven't even done anything past installing a chat program on it. Yet are still out to prove themselves, as if they have anything to gain by it.

17. People who download every freaking program they find, regardless of how legit its source is, then wonder they their computer runs like an inbred ostritch in a tar pit.

18. People who insist that they need to have every icon in the world on their desktop. No, I don't mean just for things they install. They make icons on the desktop, just for the sake of having icons on the desktop.

19. Women who jab their ghetto-talon wannabe nails into an LCD screen. I'm just waiting for one of them to just move their finger the wrong way and slice into the screen and make the liquid crystal spill out.

20. People who don't do updates on their antivirus and then wonder why they still get them in droves. And then when I tell them an update is all they need, and I demonstrate it, and problem solved, they still blame the antivirus for not having incredible voodoo magic capabilities of updating itself every hour on the hour. Because as we all know, Solitaire has more priority than life itself.

I hate it when I overhear two people who think they know something about computers talk about them, when infact that know nothing.

I remember once the computers at our uni got infected with a virus or some DoS shite, and I was told by some office monkey that the IT guys were 'looking at the ram.'

Just another person who knows nothing about computers, trying to look like he knows about computers. Unfortunately for him, he told it to 5 software engineering undergraduates, so he just looked like a w*nker instead.

I HATE it when people with out any computer knowledge try to explain to you what happened to the computer

Me: So, what's wrong

Person: I don't know. I clicked on this one thing when I was trying to turn the power off and it said something so I took out the RAM to see what it was, so then I tried to get a new hard drive, but that didn't work, so I eventually just clicked on that thing again, and it turned my computer off. Do you know what's wrong?

WTF?! Honestly, how the hell am I suppose to understand the problem when I have NO idea what you even said.

On another note

I hate it when people go on MY computer. I have my file system, and my settings how I like them. I don't want ANYONE to mess it up, or downlad a program, or anything. I HATE people going on my computers.

I bet you're not alone on this matter, whenever that happens it feels like my privacy has been violated somehow.

I let a guy borrow one of my monitors one time for a while. He called me over to see his new computer problem and see If I could fix it. I came over to his computer where his PC was in the little cubby hole in his desk. A size 10 foot print on the front of the case. Wasn't sure but he though that it was a problem with my monitor. I checked the back to find that the little screws on my monitor (it was an HP so they were the long ones) that connected to the video card were stuck in the drywall behind his pc. Needless to say after having to bend the metal that holds his card in place and reseating the video card, he had his system back. No monitor, but his system was working. :D

Monitor touching = Agreed
Fixing PCs for free (due to family memers/friends) = Agreed

My biggest two definitely involve spyware & backups. First, there have been numerous times I've sat in front of a user's PC waiting an hour or more for a scan to finish. Of coure, the client sits right behind you the entire time and keeps asking, why is it taking so long? It's amazing how they expect a 5400rpm HDD to just zip along when they've got 38 out of 40GB used and only 256MB of RAM....

The second problem I have with end-users involves backing up personal data. Most of them NEVER do it, and when their PC crashes they want it all saved. The conversation goes like this:

Me: Ok, what information is extremely critical? (especially when HDDs are on the verge of dying, and you only have so much time to transfer important files).

Client: I don't really have that much, just my documents.

Me: Ok. How about your address book or favorites?

Client: Oh, yeah I'd like that too.

They have also responded to my initial question with "save everything."

You guys are definately not alone.

One rule that should never, ever be broken in my house...
Don't ever, ever touch my computer.

I don't know about you, but I've got kids and a wife, and they all have very nice machines of thier own, makes life alot easier on everyone.
I've never understood households that can "share" one single computer. I honestly wonder how many divorces could have been prevented by simply adding a computer or two to the household.

People that insist that their generic, Aspire, Powmax, ($10), etc PSU can handle their $2000 gaming computer.

OMG :D so true!

Personal pet peeves:
1. You touch any one of my 4 pc's without my permission, you die.
2. You touch my monitor, you die.
3. Big computer jobs come at a price, I'm not a pushover
4. Computer idiots that don't listen need to be smacked hard.
5. 1 computer to 1 person, that way there are no problems
6. Patience is key to solving every problem, if you don't have patience, don't use a computer.
7. Not all computer's are alike, your POS Dell B110 won't handle a game for its life.
8. Hitting it just doesn't fix it, as tempting as it is, just don't hit it.
9. Only ask important questions, ask every question in the known universe and you get slapped.
10. I'm the only one allowed to have food near my computer, and no way in hell is it allowed to be greasy, or anything messy. I like to eat like a human when I feel like dining with my computers
11. If your going to argue about a pc issue, please be prepared to backup why you feel the way you do, otherwise its just senseless babbeling about nothing thats gonna earn you a hard smack on the face ;)
12. If its not yours, don't touch it.
13. There need to be some straight-forward guides on working with PC components. That way, a newbie can come in and read the guide first, and if it was a good guide, they wouldn't ask questions.

I think everyone would agree on these :D

8. Hitting it just doesn't fix it, as tempting as it is, just don't hit it.

LOL! Actually (keep in mind I'm not a computer idiot), but at our schools computer lab with really old IBM desktops. We were in there for a class, and I turned on my computer, and right when it turned on it made a loud beep and the beep didn't stop, it just kept going. I smacked the computer on the top and right on impact, *gasp* the long beep stopped  So, sometimes it fixes the problem :D

I'd have to say I can't stand hearing someone really pounding on a keyboard. I have carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis and arthritis. It makes me cringe when I hear unnecessary pounding.

A computer keyboard is not some old manual typewriter that requires a lot of pressure to depress a key (and if it does, it's borked and should be replaced). I've seen impatient checkout clerks repeatedly pound the same key because the next screen did not come up immediately. Hello, but if the network is what's being slow, pounding the key over and over won't help anything.

I don't have a problem talking with people who know nothing about computers as long as we start out with them admitting it, like a N00b at their first A.A. meeting... "Hi, I'm Joe. I don't know anything about computers".

i cannot stand people that have no knowledge of the product they want and goto bb and buy the first graphics card or w/e they see

:D What I witness:

Customer: My son wants to play [insert PC game] on our computer

Worker: Buy this *pulls out random GPU box*

Customer: Thanks!

I hate the workers that think that you can make these kinds of things so simple, most people don't know how to open a PC's case.

I hate the workers that think that you can make these kinds of things so simple, most people don't know how to open a PC's case.

I hate the people who think computers are so simple.

Honestly, it pisses me off when people get frustrated when you try to explain technology to them. It's like the expect to come in buy a *insert type of hardware here* and leave. They get to the store and they're dumbfounded, then they pick out the wrong thing, wonder why it doesn't work, come back, blame you for them not knowing what the hell they needed in the first place.

Lol, comptuers are NOT simple things, and require much knowledge and dedication to master the fine hobby of Computer Enthusiaism.

Well, this is going to be a long post... :p

1. People who click the mouse over and over again to make the PC go faster.

2. People who squeeze an LCD monitor to see the ripples.

3. People who insist that, after I change something on their computer, everything works differently.
Example: My dad who, after I built him an Access database to run his business, asks me even simple questions such as "how do I change the paper size?" (you go to print settings, just like before), "how do I copy and paste?" (you use the key combos, just like before), and "how do I print this page?" (you click file > print, just like before).

4. People who insist that, after I change something on their computer, every problem is my fault.
Example: My dad who, after I installed FAH on his computer, will, when faced with any prolem, always start by disabling FAH (and he won't reenable after he discovers that it wasn't causing the problem). He's like "hey, my internet connection isn't working, it must be FAH causing the problem" or "hey, Word says it can't find my file, it must be FAH causing the problem".

5. People who won't let my touch their PC, even though I know much more about it than they do.
Example: My dad, who won't let me into his Dell BIOS to fix a problem, even though I have built a computer from scratch and used a BIOS much more complicated than that one.

6. People who will think that every piece of hardware on the planet is defective before admitting that it may be a problem with their machine.
Example: The person on this forum who went through five RMAs of "defective" graphics cards, before listening to us and deciding that it was a problem with his power supply or motherboard.

7. People who think that replacing any hardware component will solve any problem.
Example: "It won't boot...I must need a new modem."

8. The salespeople at Apple, who will convince a 70 year-old grandmother to buy a mac because it is "more secure" (read: less exploited because of its rarity), while forgetting to mention that it is incompatible with 90% of the hardware and software out there and probably won't read files from her family members' computers.

9. The 70 year-old grandmother who falls for the trick mentioned above.

10. People who insist that Microsoft and its monopoly on the OS market is inherently bad, without thinking about what things would be like if we didn't have a standard OS, and without thinking about how Microsoft fixes security holes quickly, updates their software every month, provides a great product at a reasonable price, and makes the compilers that students can use to learn programming without paying hundreds of dollars.

11. An older person who will not, under any circustances, buy a computer, thinking that it would be difficult to use and expensive, like they were five years ago.

12. The person who pays AOL $20/month for dial-up internet.

13. The person who has 30 programs in their system tray, five of which are spyware, and wonders why his/her computer is so slow.

14. The person who, while very intelligent in other areas of life, will instantly lose their entire IQ when seated by a computer.
Example: "Where is the any key?" (Come on, don't you know the meaning of the word "any"? Just because its a computer doesn't mean you have to take it that literally.)

15. People who will buy a Dell and insist that it is the best, regardless of the specs. (Although I think Dell's are pretty good.)

16. People who will buy an Alienware and insist that it is better than anything else, even if the specs are the same. (And I don't think that Alienware is good.)

17. People who can't communicate effectively to the tech support person, forgetting that the tech guy can't see what's on their screen
Example: My grandmother, who says things like "Okay, now I've got three little green lights at the bottom" (reffering to the page loading bars in IE), and "should I click on the little thing that says connect?" (reffering to the "connect" button that appears when you start IE without a connection). I would be unable to be a tech support person for this reason. I wouldn't have a clue what most customers were talking about.

18. People who don't bother to learn the proper names of the components.
Example "I've got the thing with the keys on it, a big tall tower thing, the big thing that looks like a TV screen, that tray that I put these here discs in, the thing that moves the pointy thing around the picture, and something that prints."

19. People who don't bother to learn the proper names of the components, and instead use their own names.
Example: "I've got a typewriter, a ball that moves the arrow, a TV, a cupholder that I put these discs in, and the other half of the typewriter."

20. People who think the only reliable source for deciding to buy a piece of electronic equipment is "Consumer Reports".
Example: My dad (again), who always begins his rational to buy something with "Consumer Reports rated it number <something within the top five>."

Well, that should about do it. Although I'm sure I'll think of many more. :p

(BTW, I'm not saying my dad and grandmother are dumb. I think we've all had our stupid moments when it comes to computers.)

Bringing up grandmothers *ideas pop into dB's mind*.... here's a couple:

-People who insist that what I did caused the problem
Example: I changed the Windows theme and 3 days later my grandmother can't connect to the internet

-People who insist that what I'm about to do will cause a major problem
Example: When my grandmother won't let me download anything, because it might have a virus.

-Friends that anytime they come over to my house must check their myspace (even if they have a computer at their house).

-The person that has all kinds of security software on their PC, but never scans with or updates any of the programs
Example: My grandmother

-The person that insists that a simple mix up caused a major problem to their PC
Example: When I send an email to my grandmother, and the email contains a URL. It just so happens that this URL didn't turn into a link on my grandmother's PC. The next email I get back from her is something like the following: "The email you sent me didn't work, I'm about to take my computer to the computer fix it man. I should be able to email you back in a week or so when I recieve my computer back"

QFT on #14 HOCP4ME

A friend of mine works for IBM and they are sort of like the tech support and maintanence team for a highly advanced biochemical company. All the people (chemists, biologists etc.) who work there are hand-picked to do the job and obviously they are all highly paid, highly educated and highly intelligent people who are also trained to work with high-tech gadgets as well. But the kind of things my friend tells me about is ridiculous and I have a hard time believing a group of scientists, people that are looked up to in their fields can be so fricken dumb when it comes to computers. I won't bore you with the details but it's really sad to see people of higher IQ levels aren't immune to computer idiocy.

Bleh, I've worked with PC's since I was 6, never a dumb moment :D

1. As mentioned a few times, people who assume that because I gave them advice with, or helped them build a computer, that I owe it to them to troubleshoot their problem when their computer "doesn't go as fast as it used to."

2. People who ask for help with building a new system, but INSIST on arguing every part that I suggest. "Well, don't you think the AMD part would be better than this Intel piece?" or "Are you sure I should use that motherboard with this processor? Why not this one instead? What about this video card with that motherboard?" This is when I just give up. I tell them they can research it themselves, and to let me know how it goes when they figure out what they want.

3. Fingerprints on monitors. Any kind of LCD or even CRT screen for that matter. Be it my NintendoDS or my digital camera, even my TV. I don't care, it should be spotless, ALWAYS. I like seeing every pixel.

4. Those guys who have to brag about how their computer is so amazing, when it's 3 generations old. The same guy who refers to his video card as "64mb graphics chip" as if that's supposed to impress me. Buddy, the core is so much more important than the amount of ram on the card.

5. People who insist on plugging in the extra usb ports that use the expansion card slot backing plate. This drives me crazy. Most motherboards have 4 to 6 usb ports onboard, and most cases have 2 on the front panel somewhere. Do you honestly need to plug in that extra cable, which is near impossible to hide? It tells me they don't know what they use their computer for.

6. When a webpage doesn't load properly, but it's my fault, because I was the last person on the computer.

7. When the program I installed MUST be the problem causing explorer.exe to fail every 10 minutes, but leaving the machine on 24/7 with AIM on can't possibly be an issue.

8. Messy systems in general. We're talking 20+ processes at bootup, all the crap that loads at startup into the system tray, having dozens of shortcuts in the quick launch bar, and icons on the desktop.

9. Using the mouse to copy and paste, using the context menu. It's so much faster with shortcut keys!

10. People complaining that it's too slow, yet having 60+ processes running at a time.

A lot of people I know will IMMEDIATELY lose all their problem solving skills when the most simple problem crops up. The steps they follow are as follows:

1. Stare at the monitor.
2. Blink a few times.
3. Get me.

The thing is, most of the time I don't know what the problem is right away, either. That's why I try things like copying the error code into google or restarting the computer to see if that fixes it. I can fix 99% of all their problems within 1-2 minutes. Yet, the next time they'll call me again.

I agree with anyone who gets pissed off by people fucking with their machines. About a year ago, my brother and his 2 group members called me up pretty late at night from school saying they were coming to the house to finish their business project. My brother wanted to use my notebook, too, because we only have 1 accessible desktop at our house.

So I kindly setup my notebook at the kitchen table with my spare mouse and the power plugged in and everything. I opened Word and Excel and Internet Explorer for them and even created a special folder with those 3 shortcuts in it and left that open, too. Essentially, it should have been foolproof.

It wasn't. After these tools get done using it, I found EVERYTHING had been fucked with. Desktop changed, programs installed, bookmarks added, etc. It was the first time I ever seriously considered committing homicide.

You're fuckin right... My tower is my bitch. So is my bigass subwoofer, lol. But my LCD gets babied... its sick.

I have 2 things that weren't mentioned already:

1)Users that call and the first thing they ask is if "the server" is down.
example: Excel won't open, is the server down?

2)People that don't understand what the internet is and how much they use it.
example: Call #1: User: Google isn't working. Me: The internet is down for maintainance.
Call #2 (about 30 seconds later): Same user: Hotmail isn't working......

1.
mom: Son, you installed a new graphics card, you screwed up the internet with all your junk of this new hardware

me: hardware cannot make something slower unless u downgrde or drivers are messed up (have lastest drivers)

mom: well it doesnt work so let's call the geek squad asap

me: *roll eyes* ill fix it now

10 minutes later its done

me: so how hard was that

2. people tht dont buy computers because they think there super duper hard to use (grandma's and grandpa's, not all but most)

heres a big one: computer lab teacher's in eight grade that make u do spreadsheets and word processing when we should be coding in java and html and building computers... stuff that we actually will use and doesnt make us go to sleep
