2. people tht dont buy computers because they think there super duper hard to use (grandma's and grandpa's, not all but most)

heres a big one: computer lab teacher's in eight grade that make u do spreadsheets and word processing when we should be coding in java and html and building computers... stuff that we actually will use and doesnt make us go to sleep

And here's another one. People who get a little carried away with the HTML tags...

Lol, but anyway, I took a course called "IT Fundamentals". We did about two days of programming and two days of computer building. The rest of the semester was learning the history of computers (Charles Babbage, Steve Jobs...), history of the Internet (ARPANET...), and spyware/virus education.

Someone tell me, how does knowing that Charles Babbage invented the Difference Engine improve my comptuer skills?

(The class had a great teacher, though.)

Oh, yeah, another thing that I can't understand (and this has been mentioned before) is people who actually try to use Windows' multi-user feature. Come on, computers aren't that expensive. Trying to have one for an entire family...I just can't see that working. And Windows XP's multi-user feature is wayyyy overbuilt (Disk quotas? Who has a hard drive that is so small they have to limit the amount of disk space allocated to the kids?).

Is there anyone on this forum who has ever set up a non-administrator account on thier computer?

I have several pet peeves:

1. High school computer teachers that know less than the students ("AGP is still the fastest bus available.")

2. Friends that ask for advice on buying a new computer, ignore your advice, and then complain about / expect you to fix their $100 barebone kit.

3. Anyone who automatically assumes that any problem is a virus.

4. "You mean holding the power button in until it turns off is bad for it?"

5. My Dell DJ mp3 player is NOT an ipod. The next person that comments on my "ipod" is going to get smacked!

6. And speaking of Dell, I'm reminded of a couple of people BRAGGING about their Dell systems. First of all, it's a Dell, there's nothing to brag about. Second, I'm not sure how you can brag about anything you had no part in. Clicking the radio button for "1gb DDR400" instead of "512mb DDR400" does not constitute building your own computer.

7. People that have amazing computers but have no idea how to use them, but still insist that they're awesome. Having a nice car doesn't make you a good driver.

I'm sure I have plenty more, but that's all I can think of for now.

EDIT: Just thought of another one.

8. People that believe THIS product must be the best, just because it has the largest model number (case in point: ATI vs. NVIDIA chipsets). Come on people, use your brain. Even worse is people who buy products because they're more expensive, so they must be better. This includes anyone who shops at retail stores (Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA) without significant prior knowledge and a price comparison with online stores. I can get such a better deal online...

I hate when admins use their computers to delete my posts about cheese. KTHXBYE

If you're planning a job in creating websites or programs, you probably haven't set yourself on this in the 8th grade. I guarantee that having a good knowledge of Microsoft Office will be much more helpful then a vauge pool of information on how to create a website. Furthermore, if you are even midly intelligent or bright minded you can probably learn HTML and CSS enough to build a complex website in a month or less. I know I did. Java might take a little longer, but to build up that information in your brain doesn't take much personal tutoring.

Here's another one.

-The uber gaming king that insists that don't matter what, building is always cheaper then buying.
Example: A forum member that recommends you build your grandmother's system that will be used for checking email and printing out knitting patterns.

5. My Dell DJ mp3 player is NOT an ipod. The next person that comments on my "ipod" is going to get smacked!

I have a Dell DJ also, and it gets associated with an iPod on a daily basis

well, id rather do somethging more interesting than make wordprocessing documents for the 100th time, its not english people, we learn that in a diff class... and i get the worst grade in computer class (b to b+) when its my fav hobby.....

School isn't about making things interesting. It's about teaching you things you will use in the future. If you're so inclined, tell the teacher that learning MS office is boring you, and you wish to learn HTML or Java. I'm sure all the other students are just as eger to learn Java as you are.

Ask the teacher if you can come during a study hall and he/she can teach you HTML/Java or do something for extra credit. School is a place to learn, if you're bored, ask to be challenged.

When I was in middle school my best fried and I were bored out of our mind, so we went digging in the file system and eventually found all the save files for our typing program. The files weren't protected in anyway. I was SO tempted to just delete them, but I realized that since I'm logged on, they could probably trace who it was that deleted them.

So, if you have the balls, and want to challenge yourself. Try to find save files to programs and delete them or something. Although, this will probably get you in trouble, but atleast you'll feel smart and like you did something, lol. :p

i dont care about html or java, i just want to do something more productive and interesting with my time, not just office or something, i think we could do something more fun like paying WoW or fear all day, or programming, or graphic design, or video game design, or anything, im sure 99% of all kids know more about computers than their computer teachers...i wish we actually had good computers and actual microsoft os's instead of apple, but i guess schools are to poor for those and must settle for those all in 1 gigs..... o well

Well, please don't take this the wrong way, but you have alot of lessons to learn ahead of you. Like I said before, if you're not feeling challenged, talk to the teacher see if you can do something for extra credit. The reason your school is teaching you what it is is because having a basic computer knowledge is a must for any one who wants a half-decent job. Knowing how to play Wow or Fear, or Programing, or Grahpics Deisgn is NOT going to acomplish learning basic computer skills.

Lol... If 99% of the world know more about computers then their teachers, then do you think there would be a thread like this? Trust me on this, geniune computer knowledge is something that is learned through hard work and dedication, not something that you just grow up with. You may know how to try, how to run MS Office, but beyond that not many people care or want to know.

And, alot of shcools use Apples because of their creativity software. There's actually a huge debate in many schools as to use apples or PC's and it's a touchy subject for alot of falculty.

Just, do what the teacher tells you, and suck it up. Life isn't fair, but hang in there kid

This is true, but I'm neither of those. I just have a lot of complaints in regards to people who just don't seem to take in the whole of the situation they're presenting to me, and then wonder why my eyebrow is twittering. Certain things like going ridiculously cheap on a power supply may not be as blatantly obvious, but c'mon...the rest I think should be given at least a little more thought past the phone-a-friend option.

Actually I think it's closer to the fact that there are teachers out there who still take educating children seriously, but the people who distribute the money for the schools they work in, could give two shits less.

But if anything, look at it this way - compared to the people who didn't take your boring bullshit class, you look better on paper because you did. The one thing i've learned about school, at least when I was still going through it, was that the more crap you got out of the way today was more room saved for real learning tomorrow. So indeed, hang in there, tough it out now, because the more of that boring crap you get rid of now is less that you will have to put up with later. I put up with a lot of it my freshman year in highschool, but when sophomore year came around I was doing COBOL, and by senior year I had already touched on HTML, Visual Basic, Java, C and C++, and navigating my way through Unix, as well as working with Flash. Granted, I didn't learn everything, but I became familiar with the concept of programming and how to work with all of those.

So just sit tight and knock out the garbage classes now while you can still take them. Later on, you'll open up the doors for anything of substance that's available to you.

To my knowledge, most schools/districts will go with either Apple or Dell (or both like my HS did), because they offer large discounts on bulk amounts of computers. If you wanted to go out and buy 500 Compaq/HP machines it would probably cost a lot more, even at the same spec.

You should have heard the argument I had with a tutor in college...

AGP is only used for graphics at the moment but soon its going to replace PCI.

You can add "schools that use Apple computers" to my list.

Why teach someone how to use something that is virtually never used in the real world? If you teach them a mac, they will probably buy a mac since they know how to use it. And then, when they get out into the workplace, they won't have a clue how to use the Windows PC.

Sorry, but easier creativity software just doesn't justify teaching an OS that is only used by 1% of the population.

I mean, the metric system is easier than the English system, right? But that doesn't mean we don't have to teach kids the English system!

I honestly wish that Apple would just give up and start making PCs. I cringe every time I see a mac. I think "Oh no! Someone else fooled by Apple's marketing tricks!".

Honestly, if someone were to make a Windows PC that fit all components into a flat-panel monitor (like the mac) and included good security software, Apple's Macintosh would be gone in a flash.

Y'all are gonna kill me! :D

The 12 steps of accepting computer abuse

1. We admitted we were powerless over computer abuse and lame users— that our lives had become unmanageable.

2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried to carry this message to fellow geeks and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

heres a few more-
1. When you offer to help them order a new computer so it works well, then they never call you till AFTER they get it, and wonder why the ___________(insert name) computer that they got for 299.00 (or less) with free shipping isn't like they thought it would run.
Then want you to "fix it" without voiding thier warranty.
2. Any one that has less than 256mb ram and shared video memory 32+ mb, running XP. I worked on my pastors E-machine, Ecs board/semp 2200, 64mb video ram setting, and 128mb total ram. Running a ton of bloatware!!
3. Nobody forget the stickers some people put around thier monitors
4. Cutesy color matched computers- think a barbie computer
5. When you install a combo drive (cd burner/dvd player) and they pester you for days because the can't burn a dvd. They won't takeyou answer -"you can't do that!"
6. They want a custom PC at a Wal-mart price.
7. Any pet hair inside the computer.
8.When they wonder how to get to the bios for future reference- or what regedit does.
9.When buying from B&M stores, the "Extended warranty" (Hello buddy I won't have it 6 months :D )
10. When said "a computer is a computer" or "thier all the same" - SURE.
gwarren007

1. When people have poor wire management.
2. When people ask me why my computer is so loud.
3. Dumb fucks putting magnets on the monitor!!!!!!!!!!
4. People who plug both power cables in a sata hard drive (molex & sata power) lol
5. And when your monitor goes crazy and speakers buzz because of your cell phone. gahhh lol

The main things are:

1) People who breathe down your neck while you work on their PC
(You know what I mean)

2) People who fuck it up again hours after you've worked on it.
Ex. Spent about 3 hours on my friend's computer, got a call 3 hours later saying it wouldn't boot into windows (GAARGH). Bring the fuckin' thing here, this time.

3) Working on a smoker's computer
Ex.

Edit: Good thing I set that to resize

I would have to say that big thing that pisses me off is for a fact when people come over my house and sign onto myspace. Its like its not your dam life. I about to make it go to tubgirl if someone trys to go to myspce on my computers. You can live without myspace for a few dam hours.

-When people tell me the system I built for them is a piece of shit and runs slow, then I look at it and it is infected with 100+ malicious programs because they've disabled the anti-virus/spyware programs. (Although I was once given a system because the owner thought it was broken...30 minutes for a format and reinstall and I sold it for $800 :D )

-Dell cooling. If that's not abuse of good hardware, I don't know what is.

-People that still have the display stickers on the computer they bought 5 years ago.

-Touching the monitor, banging the mouse, slapping the tower, etc.

-People that tell me AMD chips are half-assed ripoffs of Intel chips, and tell me I don't know what I'm talking about when I tell them they're wrong.

-People that ask for my advice on what computer system to buy, ignore all of it, buy a total POS and then ask me to fix it when it runs slow. There's nothing to fix, jackass! You bought a Celeron!

-People that have 48 different AOL icons on their desktop.

-People that can't figure out why their computer keeps crashing after 20 minutes, then I open up the machine and find and inch of dust coating the entire interior. Honestly, how do they pull this off? Do they hook their intake fan up to the lint filter in their dryer?

-This was back in the days of SDRAM: People would constantly return SDRAM and tell me it was broken and made their machine run slower. Invariably they bought the 66mhz RAM because it was cheaper and stuck it in there with the 133mhz RAM they had. I eventually just pulled the 66 and 100 mhz off the shelf and only sold it if people asked for it specifically.

There are others, but I really should be doing some work right now. ;)

1. I was working on a friends computer and he smokes in his room with no ventilation. Honestly every component reaks of burning cigarette, its like it was set on fire in a pile of tobacco. His computer has stupid cooling config, he put the fans so that it intakes at the back and blows out air from the front... Because he thinks thats better, when its on its like the computer itself is blowing out cigarette smoke, makes me want to gag while trying to fix it.

2. My brother who does nothing but play games on my computer and breaks things and never uses the right names for parts.. The powersupplybox is a PSU, a Hardrive is the case and everything inside. The memory is where all the files are kept. GOD!

3. My mom who references me to build a computer for her friends that want a "custom" system to read email and create spreadsheets. Its not cheaper this way!

Thats it for now.

OMG :D so true!

Personal pet peeves:
1. You touch any one of my 4 pc's without my permission, you die.
2. You touch my monitor, you die.
3. Big computer jobs come at a price, I'm not a pushover
4. Computer idiots that don't listen need to be smacked hard.
5. 1 computer to 1 person, that way there are no problems
6. Patience is key to solving every problem, if you don't have patience, don't use a computer.
7. Not all computer's are alike, your POS Dell B110 won't handle a game for its life.
8. Hitting it just doesn't fix it, as tempting as it is, just don't hit it.
9. Only ask important questions, ask every question in the known universe and you get slapped.
10. I'm the only one allowed to have food near my computer, and no way in hell is it allowed to be greasy, or anything messy. I like to eat like a human when I feel like dining with my computers
11. If your going to argue about a pc issue, please be prepared to backup why you feel the way you do, otherwise its just senseless babbeling about nothing thats gonna earn you a hard smack on the face ;)
12. If its not yours, don't touch it.
13. There need to be some straight-forward guides on working with PC components. That way, a newbie can come in and read the guide first, and if it was a good guide, they wouldn't ask questions.

I think everyone would agree on these :D

Hah, when I get home, I'm going to print this out and hang it up.. will be useful when my friends come over..

LMAO :D

Some funny and true comments here...especially the smokers PC's....Ive had to take some of them outside, put a dust-mask on and blow them out with a 6hp motor behind it.

Haha what a great thread... One thing I didn't see mentioned:

Any computer case shoved into a cabinet with the door closed so it stays hidden, yet probably very hot. I feel bad for the hardware :(

Dell actually does spend a lot of time doing R&D on cooling...case in point, the Dimension 8xxx's and Optiplex GX2xxs (the black gull-wing cases that were prominent during the P4B/C eta). The GX280s here are damn near silent and still keep freakin' Prescotts running cool thanks to their heat shrouds and such.

I thought of another one, People I know who built a gaming rig around a Celeron processor. No matter how much they spend on they're GPU and Ram and all that... Running a celeron is like running a 8 lane highway down to 1 and expecting it to be fast.

roommate told me this about a friend:
him: man your roommate's computer sucks!! (refering to mine, i wasnt there)
roommate: y is that?
him: he doesnt have a fan o_O
...
since when doesnt not having a side window make a pc lame? ....
want...to...kill....

Proprietary business software
Modular business software..."You mean you need BOTH inventory controls and payroll?"

What ticks me off? When "cool kids" colour their laptop keys, put stickers everywhere, and let their shit get *really* dirty.

But it's their hardware, they can do what they want with it. What REALLY pisses me off are the "internet dregs"

Yeah, those... things... whose online lives revolve around AIM. livejournal, Myspace, facebook and every self indulgent little girl who thinks people actually care about the hourly updates they add to their blogs.

People like this are akin to light and noise pollution in a major urban city. Internet pollution. I like it :)

Some new ones that I don't think have been said yet:

Having to learn binary math at the begining of EVERY SINGLE COMPUTER CLASS. I've been through it 9 times now.

Professors that knew everything about computers 20 years ago and think that nothing has changed. My professor last week said that most CPU's have L2 cache on the motherboard.

Trying to fix someone's computer and finding that an update made it worse. I tried to update my GF's Dell 600m laptop - for some reason, updating the DVD/CD-RW firmware prevented it from working. Then when I told her I needed the original CDs to reinstall windows, she looked at me like I had two heads. (since then a re-install has fixed the problem)

People asking you about what went wrong with the computer, then when you begin to try to explain it, they instantly lose interest.

When you are stuck explaining how to do something over and over and over again because people don't actually remember what you explained the last time the problem happened.

When people complain that the internet isn't working when really they have their wireless connection turned off.

People who think they know about computers, don't, yet insist that they do.

I am a smoker, but even still I agree with that. Knowing that I'm a smoker I take the extra care to blow out my system at least bi-weekly, if not every week.
