Computer Abuse, what ticks u off?

I am a smoker, but even still I agree with that. Knowing that I'm a smoker I take the extra care to blow out my system at least bi-weekly, if not every week.

I smoke like a train... but never, ever around my computers.

And I completely agree with the person who said propriatry business software.. most frustrating shit in the world.

I smoke around my computer, its not a big deal if you have ventilation. I never find any tar in the computer, but then, my ceiling fan is always going, and I only smoke 1/2 pack a day

Having to learn binary math at the begining of EVERY SINGLE COMPUTER CLASS. I've been through it 9 times now.
Oh my GOD! I've had it 4 times now in two years. Doesn't there come a point with upper level curriculum that you can goddamn assume they've been exposed to that crap already!!

One prof made it interesting by making us actually do fairly complex arithemetic problems in binary and hex with no calculator, though.

And QFT on people touching monitors. ESPECIALLY LCD's. I work in the computer lab on campus...the monitors look like they were pulled from the bottom of Katrina flood waters.

Its irritating when people want you to fix their garbage for free. But when they get mad about the results because this or that doesn't work EXACTLY like it used to....good thing I don't carry a weapon.

The 'Your 400W PSU must be giving you low fps' thing that is going around on the Steam hardware forums at the moment. :/

Ha! Possibly the triple digits worth of running processes could contribute?

People who think that my custom build is worse than their 3 year old computer because their's has a DELL sticker on it.

People who refer to the case as the processor.

People who stick 50 LEDs and CCFLs in their tower.

Schools with no computer classes that meanwhile have 10 different art classes.

Cheapo cases with NO cooling at all.

People that call every single MP3 player in existence an iPod

Grrr, that is a big one for me too. Also when they say your far superior player is crap because it isn't one. Rio Karma ftw!

Going to fix a machine and finding out no one bothered to tell you they spilled shit in it. Just went to take apart a compaq d530 sff system to put a new board in it and found a spill under the system board. No I have to go out tommorrow and pick up some shit to clean it up. Pissed me off. The cleint whos remote office did this just had the time it takes to fix this double. I hate dealing with spills. I use to be a notebook tech and had to deal with them all the time....

Touching the monitor is the big thing for me.
MySpace/AIM whores
People that hate on Macs for ambiguous reasons like incompatibility, price, or them being "secure because its not that popular." none of it's true....at all....period.
people expecting PC work for free.....
People that run their $600 20" LCD screen at 800x600 res because its "hard to read when its bigger"....raise the DPI dipshit....
people who call gAIM (on Linux) Gay AIM (my sister) (PS I REFUSE to install windows on her PC, I gurantee it will have at least 1 virus, and hundreds of spyware within 30 Mins after she first uses it.)
people that manage to do the stuff in in ()'s ^^^^^

My gripes:

-Typing with one hand using only the pointer finger, making sure to press each key hard and all the way down so that the key stroke goes through. It's slow as hell and the sound drives you insane. That's what my dad does and it pisses me off to no end.

-People who don't know how to do anything computer related except ebay and google, AKA my parents.

-Bad hygiene and/or eating chips or food in general while using the computer. I hate when I go to the computer lab at my college, and the mouse is covered in slime from someone who just ate the greasiest food ever.

-Having family members who visit porn sites thinking that they covered their tracks by simply closing the window, meanwhile the links are staring me in the face in the history bar and/or recent documents.

-Like you all said, touching the monitor and also coughing/sneezing near a monitor/keyboard and not covering your mouth.

-People who leave their computers running 24/7 just so they can have AIM running all day in order to show off their away message.

-Last but not least, people who use myspace.

-People who pronounce URL as 'Earl.'

-Mom yelling at me for "going too fast" when I show her how to do something.

-Mom never learning no matter how many times I show her.

-People who know about Firefox and still use IE.

-People double-clicking EVERYTHING, even website links.

-People yelling at the monitor when a website happens to load slowly-than-usual, and then blaming the computer.

-Celeron processors.

-Redundant folders, like a Music Downloads folder on the Desktop, and one in My Music, etc. I simply loathe clutter and disorganization.

-People who can't type, or who type like 11-year-olds new to AOL.

-Awfully-designed websites that center all content and usually have sparkly backgrounds and junk. If it looks bad, take it off the web.

-Awfully-designed websites trying to pass as legitimate, ones that are run by an e-merchant! They expect us to input our credit card information? NO, THANKS.

-People who use my computer and take liberty to move my windows around, like my girlfriend'll sit down, open Firefox, and even resize it! GAH!

-People who think iPods are the only portable audio players out there.

-Prolly more, but I need sleep.

- people who don't understand the concept of "minimum hardware requirement."
- people who buy computer/tech parts/equipment - just for the sake of having it.
- people who receive spam and blame it on others for surfing the internet (my boss).
- people who say "you need more memory," but don't specify whether they're referring to HDD space or DDR capacity... (my boss, again)
- people who "fix up" their myspace page (my office secretary).
- people who don't use anti-spyware/antivirus software and then complain about how slow the infected computer is (my office secretary, again).

1) touching the monitor...

2) people that depend on the mouse for everything, and refuse to use shortcuts..
(i.e. ctrl+c, ctrl+v)

3) people asking me if dells/gateway/ etc are good computers....without knowing any specs

4) people double clicking on everything,

5) people not knowing how to right click

6) many many more

using ball point pens to point at things on a TFT.... I go fooking nuts at people for doing that...

I've come close to using my gel pen a couple of times on my PDA because I thought I had the stylus in my hand...

Different thing I know, but....

I always end up confiscating their mouse or something.

LOL, i work at a college and the only dead TFT's we have had since removing all the CRT from the site, have been caused by pens. I had one aca'demic' actually underline something on the screen infront of my very own eyes... completely gobsmacked.

It was on my TFT he did it. He didnt realise it would mark it as it doesnt mark CRT's. moron.

People who think they know and understand Linux when all they've used is GNOME or KDE and have never used the CLI or understand its capabilities and advantages or any other advantages of linux.

Touching the monitor. More specifically, dragging their fingers across their LCD monitors pointing out things. I'm easily annoyed I guess. :p

Same here! People around my office now know to not touch my monitor. All it took was going off the deep-end a few times. I guess it *really* bugs me.

HAHA!! These are all good ones. LOL i guess i didn't know how many things bugged me.

One more thing that I can add:

*being the only [H]ardcore computer user in my family / circle of friends / at work / etc.

I'm always building computers for my family/friends, it's like herding squirrels: "no don't buy that dell", "don't get that video card upgrade", "THAT'S A RIP OFF!!!", "you got ripped off, you shoulda came to me", etc, etc.

Usually results in: "Sigh, let me build you a computer, at least I'll sleep better knowing I got you a good deal".

At work it's even worse: "What's Vista" (got that question last week). We're a friggin software development firm and they haven't even tested with Vista yet! They don't even know what it is!!! OMG...

*sigh*

Maybe it's not computer abuse exactly, well, maybe buying a dell is....

I hate it when my GF interrupts me from gaming because she have a "computer" problem: i.e. she can't see her navigation bars of her web browser (She accidently hit Fullscreen view EVERYTIME).

"Honey come here something's not working on my PC"

*stop playing BF2, get to my gf's room* "What is it?"

"Here I can't see my navigation and adress bars"

*long sigh* "Ok, press F11"

*She presses* "Oh nice it's back"

"Yeah, next time it does this, do the same thing ok?" "ok"

...after 12554245 times solving the same "problem", I think she is finally assimilating it. God knows I have patience :p

great thread!

have to say the fingers on the monitor but also ppl who click apply then ok

Monitor fingerprints are probably my biggest pet peave with computers.

Perhaps the other is people who prefer to buy devices with too many extra buttons everywhere. Mouse with 10 buttons, keyboard with 100 extra buttons, ect...

Ball mice. No reason for dell or HP to still be sending you a damn ball mouse... but they do it anyway.

Saving to the c:\ root. Ever work on someone's computer that has 100 extra files in the C root..? drives me nuts.

Too many desktop icons... I am a minimalist.

i cant stand people who touch the screen, have tons of dust in the machine, people who try to sound smart (this one bothers me to no end), not backing up any of their data, USING THE CD TRAY FOR A CUP HOLDER!!....ya, pretty much everything said in this thread.

not computer related, but because I worked at Best Buy I have a ton of these:

-A customer thought (and was convinced) that hooking up all cables (composite, s-video, component, HDMI, optical and S/PDIF) would give him the BEST quality in audio and video

-A customer pushed a Pioneer Elite to look behind it. It was mere centimeters from crashing down off of its stand. Then the customer left it like that.

EDIT: And this one time I subbed in the computer dept.

Me: "How are you sir" (Sir being a 22 year old jerk)
Him: "Sup'
Me: "Can I help you with anything?"
Him: "I'd like to buy this laptop" (Laptop was a 500 dollar Toshiba, pretty good deal)
Me: "Aright"

---Everything gets done--- I could tell at this point that he was getting a little antsy, I truly didn't care cause it was almost paid for

Him: "Can I have a knife?"
Me: Sure, what for?
Him: I want to open
Me: Aight
-Get's a box cutter, has happened before, so not unusual
Him: Thanks
-Opens box takes out laptop, examines it then THROWS IT IN THE AIR. It flies for a bit and lands and hits a 4 y/o little girl on the head.
Me: (REALLY LOUD) WTF?!!?

He runs at this point and my friend grabs him and pushes him down. Finally, his 'posse' shows and pushes my friend. The first kid stands up and I punch him in the stomach, more or less incapacitating him while I help my friend take care of the the other four punks. A few of my other coworkers get involved and subdue them all.

The kid then laughs saying that he just destroyed our product, and there's nothing he can do about it. I then realize throughout this whole debacle, I still had his credit card, so I whip that out and say "No, I think it was your product"

After police were called, we find out that the kid was dared by his friends to destroy a laptop. But because he was so nervous, he BOUGHT the laptop first.

OMG, who cares?

The people who think this is important are annoying. It's in the same group as: "Should i turn my computer off or leave it running??"

OMG, who cares, it doesnt matter. (from a wear / tear standpoint, anyways. There may be *operational* reasons to keep that webserver powered up, however).

Thumb drive should never hold anything that isn't easily restored.

Not only that, but by default the thumb drive mount does not have anything enabled that would result in lost data when you just pull it out.

I mean... can you even enable write caching on a thumb drive? I don't even think that applies to a thumb drive. There is no real need to unmount before pulling it out.

I also hate ball mice. And I hate when I'm browsing newegg's site, and the next day I see a "sale" with items listed with a price identical to the price I saw them as the day before.

And I hate stereo speakers with no subwoofer. Or when people (my girlfriend) are okay with their lappy speakers and don't even get a cheap 2.1 set for them.

And I hate stumbling upon someone's messy-as-hell desk--so messy that they have to type with their keyboard in their lap.

And I hate keyboard trays!

Little things. You know, like when you're having a blast playing your game of choice, you're getting into it... "ALAN!"

"What?"

"Come here please."

You get up to see what's wrong now.

"I've written this, now do I send this email in G-mail?"

And, of course, there is a button with 'SEND MAIL' or something right above the damn message she's typed out.

There was another time she managed to slaughter an entire Win2k installation. Borked policies, borked files, borked everything. And, of course, the only thing she did was put her USB drive in and take it out. I suspect her version 1.0 USB computer played a part. It didn't work with a Kyocera USB laser we picked up either.

One thing that mildly ticked me off was the time they went into town (without me) and (without asking anyone for advice) bought a 15" (Yes, fifteen) HP LCD screen for around $500 - $600 New Zealand, when they were around $300 - $400 online.

Couldn't care less if they buy an ex-business IBM secondhand, it's their money, I won't have to use it.

just wanted to share some experience on this front, I have a friend who has some other dumbass friend who thinks he knows about computers. My pal wants to buy a new computer and he invites us (me and the idiot) with him to the store to help him pick parts. The troll-along-village-idiot goes on and on about how my friend should get a Mac because a Mac wouldn't break down. I try to argue with him that all hardware is prone to malfunction and failure and that higher quality pc parts are usually much more reliable than standard Mac hardware.
I had to sit there and argue with him because once upon a time his thick head somehow had absorbed this block of so-called fact through the giant pores he calls his ears and now there is no way any reason or logic would let him accept or even consider otherwise...

edit : lol @ post above

Did you tell him that Apple doesn't even make any of the hardware? And that the same contractors who build Apple's hardware make PC hardware?

I think ASUS actually still manufactures Apple notebooks. (Someone feel free to correct me if I am wrong)

Best post ever:

"Even though his psu is 300w, it's a brand name enermax so it's better than other crappy no-name brand chinese 300w ones. He would probably get 40-50fps. With a better psu 60-70. His card might not be getting enough power."

What bothers me the most is when businesses I go to don't have any reasonable form of backing up their data. I keep all my data in three seperate places.

beating the keyboard keys as if they were punching them - I snapped on one employee cause i went out and got a laptop type keyboard, quite keys and soft touch yet he STILL punded on them! so i gave it to him good!

Same crap with the mouse

People who use a Pen ona CRT to point to crap, after a while that shit wont come out!

People who touch the monitors PERIOD, you dont have to!

people who eat by a comp and get crap greasy and dont clean it!!!

Ooh, here's one I didn't think of before. It's not really computer abuse, it's just stupid on multiple levels.

My friend, against my recommendations, bought a $100 Socket A barebones off TigerDirect a few months ago. Case, mobo, processor (ack! he got a Sempron!), PSU, CPU HSF, a 512 stick o' RAM, pretty much everything but hard and optical drives. He said he got it "Just to have something for now that I can upgrade later." First of all, there's no way to upgrade that later; Socket A and AGP? I don't know where he planned on going...

So of course I have to go to his house to hook everything up, bringing spare parts with me because of course there is only one IDE cable in the whole set, and of course he didn't buy any optical drives (he had bought a 160GB Seagate HDD). I get everything hooked up fairly quickly, turn it on... No post. No video.

The motherboard (a Biostar something-or-other) somehow, for reasons I still don't understand, supported a 400MHz FSB using some variant of the NF4-something_revision chipset... but not DDR400 RAM. Even said so in the mobo's manual. Bottom line, the motherboard was a POS and TigerDirect had sold a barebones with incompatible RAM. I couldn't even get it to post to try to change the speed, so he bought some DDR333 RAM and sold the 400 stick to me (it matched my 512 stick I already had and I'm still using it to this day).

And since then, his computer has given us no end of troubles at LAN parties and such. Hardest thing I ever tried to do was getting a PCI graphics card working with that mobo with onboard video.
